Chapter 18: He Noticed
Adrien wasn't exactly stupid, but wasn't the most aware either. He had a lot on his plate, and had the idea you didn't want to push further onto it.
There seemed to be a different side to you, one that he couldn't decipher. It wasn't a bad thing, but after seeing your face this evening he had extreme concern and thoughts.
"Were they attacked? They seemed tired..how did spider-man know who to give the bag to? Does he know them?" His voice interrupted the nighttime silence, making Plagg groan.
"I cant have 5 seconds of peace.." he grumbled, flying up to adriens face from his Camembert stash.
"They're probably is tired, and maybe they knows who he is?" Plagg guessed off the top of his head, and Adrien groaned, slumping over his desk.
He currently had his monitors brightly blaring at him, every one of them a different photo or screenshot he took of you.
"Are you sure you aren't obsessed with them?" The kwami muttered to himself, noting that his owners been going through pictures and past messages for hours.
Missing his sarcasm, Adrien spoke on,
"I haven't really helped them out with anything besides her parents on the occasion, but I see they're injured. The more I check, the more I notice random bruises and bandages. What if they're in danger? What if there's something they arent telling me?" He rambled out in a single breath, left to take a deep inhale.
Plagg noticed how much more concerned Adrien seemed for your wellbeing, making him quite proud, but he'd never admit it out loud.
"I doubt they'd tell you" he shrugs, zipping up to the different pictures in the monitors.
You had bags drooping under your eyes, seeming drained of life, but having an energetic sparkle. Something he noticed by looking at these pictures.
Adrien seemed like a life saver, that's for sure.
"Well, maybe I have to help keep them safe. I don't want them getting hurt" he stared at his monitors, a passionate glow on his enhanced irises.
"Yeah, that's the disgustingly sweet spirit I know. At this rate you might as well follow her as chat noir.." Plagg joked, to which the overly concerned blonde took very seriously.
"Yeah, that sounds good," he nodded along subconsciously, and the creature of destruction gave up at trying to cheer him up for now.
Adrien needed more sleep than jokes right now.
—
The next day adrien woke up sluggish for school, wasting too much time worrying the night before.
He showered and quickly got dressed, snatching his phone from his nightstand to text you.
Guccimodel:
Good morning rabbit
Crackaroach:
Good morning my guy
He smiled to your quick response, and Plagg took a peek over his shoulder.
"Well someone seems to be in a better mood" he commented, and Adrien yawned as he slung his book bag over his shoulder.
"Yeah, couldnt sleep well though. Had a dream (name) was some sort of top secret hero.." he chuckled, but it came out forced. Plagg seemed to find that humorous,
"If they had the chance, they'd never be a hero. They'd rather stay home and play games, and we both know that" he nudged Adriens cheek, making him smile fondly.
"Yeah..they would"
—
You gazed into your bathroom mirror, squinting as you gently jabbed the purple blotch on your cheekbone. It stung, but you only cringed at the feeling.
You were pretty wreckless when it actually came to facing villains, so this was a common thing to happen.
You grabbed your trusty foundation, using a big sponge to blend the thick substance into your cheek.
Each jab stung, but with enough tender care, your wound wasn't visible.
To make sure it didn't come off, you added a layer of powder over the spot before making it to school.
—
Adrien stared at the buildings that flashed past his window, growing impatient despite his bodyguards driving speed. His foot gently tapped until the car finally halted.
He could spot your figure in the distance chatting with nino, seeming more comfortable around him from what it seems.
There also seemed to be nothing wrong with you, which adrien found quite hard to believe.
He exited the car and told his bodyguard goodbye, rushing up the stairs. He could hear your conversation the closer he got,
"I really think you should give this game soundtrack a try, its pretty good for inspiration if you find you right thing" you suggested, a grin on your face. It was a easy to talk to him, seeing that he's so chilled out.
Nino chuckled, nodding in approval. "Of course. Just text it to me dude"
Adrien, who felt practically invisible, finally greeted you both.
"Hey guys" he chirped in, a smile on his face.
"Oh, hey dude" Nino noticed Adriens presence, and you did as well. Your eyes sparkled, a smile appearing as you waved slowly.
"Hey loser"
Adrien gently fist-bumped nino, but turned to you with a sharper gaze. You could feel it burn into your face, making you instinctively caress your cheeks.
"Um..do I have something on my face?" You asked, and he simply shook his head.
"No, something just seems a little different. I'll catch on though" he forced out, feeling guilt eat at his mind for lying.
But he wasn't really lying. Something was different, and by different, meaning your blotch from yesterday being gone.
"Did you end up doing the science homework?" Nino changed the subject, and you nodded,
"Did it so I could waste my time at home and watch blondie play something. Seriously, Adrien is the worst at games" you rolled your eyes, earning a whine from your friend.
Nino raised a brow, "Well that's new, you were a pro at mecha strike III" he said to adrien, and you snickered loudly.
Both their heads snapped towards you, and your smile faltered to pent up flushed cheeks.
"Um..sorry" you looked away from them, but Adrien sent you a gooey smile.
Nino glanced at the both of you suspiciously before a slow smile stretched across his lips.
"No worries. Glad you're settling into being our friends" he nudged you gently, the bell cutting you all short for first period.
You groaned, patting your cheeks to try to wake yourself up. You had started to ramble about how much you've been dreading class, but it was all blocked out by the emerald eyed beauty.
Adrien observed your cheek closely, seeing a smudge the gave him a quick wink of sunlight.
He had to get closer.
You started to walk alongside Nino to class, and Adrien quickly trotted to your other side.
"So I kinda started to draw, and I never realized how fun it is. I mean, it's really hard, but it makes time pass really fast. I.." as you started to ramble about your new art hobby, Adrien kept staring at your face. The more he stared, the more he noticed baby fuzz and faint acne scars.
If he just could see the other side, he could spot the bruise.
Buried in thought and accidentally spacing out, he felt a hard nudge at his arm.
He blinked profusely, staring down at your slightly shorter stature. From beyond his focused gaze, he can spot students getting settled down in class while you were both outside.
He already arrived? How out of it was he?
"You seems spaced out, weirdly spaced out. What's going on?" You got to the point without hesitation, staring up at the blonde for answers. He seemed to tense, his shoulders squaring stiffly.
"Just, tense about yesterday's akuma, yknow? This one got to me a bit more.. I cant help but mention you put yourself in danger again, and-and I'm not there to help" he blabbered, and you shushed him, causing his puppy eyes to stare you down in worry.
Your heart felt itself coo at his caring nature, but you didn't let it seep through.
"Look, I can handle myself fine. If anything happens, ladybug and chat noir will always be there to help. This happens often, and you have to eventually let go of overthinking my safety. I'll come back by the next day, ya know?" your hand was placed on his shoulder, giving it a reassuring squeeze and toothy smile.
His shoulders slowly sunk, smiling down at you.
"Thank you, (name)"
Your reassurance was all he needed to wipe away all his questions.
—
The next few periods went by quick, normal class occurrences happening. Adrien seemed to slowly let the thought of your wound drift away, pushed to the back of his mind.
Besides, it was lunch. The bell had just rung, causing students from all around packed their bags. An ocean of words blabbered between each friend group, conversing with each other as they filed out to lunch.
Nino gently pecked alya on the cheek and she returned it, both waving each other goodbye before he approached you and Adrien.
The blonde was staring at you without an ounce of amusement.
You were stretching, popping your muscles with a loud yawn.
"Did you really have to sleep through nearly the entire period..?" Adrien questioned, staring at your puffy eyes.
You ignored him, ruffling your tangled hair.
"What do they have today? God, I'm starving" your voice was raspy, but excitement fleshed through it. Nino laughed.
Your head whipped towards him, squinting your eyes accusingly, "don't laugh at my hunger, Nemo"
"It's Nino-"
"Okay, Nemo, Adrien, let's get lunch" you chirped, abruptly standing from your seat. You shoved your pencil pouch in your backpack, but was extremely cautious with your tablet.
With everything zipped up, you slung you're bag over your shoulder and headed out of the classroom.
Adrien slowly got up after seeing the confused look on his friends face. He hung his book bags strap over his shoulder before approaching, shaking his head in sympathy.
He pat his shoulder in a comforting manner, wearing a small smile.
"Looks like you've got a nickname. Yeah, she isn't letting that go" he muttered to him, and the two trailed not far behind you. You were already out the door, but by the time adrien opened the door, he was met with pane of glass.
He halted, causing nino to bump into his back.
The blonde felt his eyes widen for a second, almost stumbling into the reflection in front of him.
The mirror moved forward, revealing its holder, which was an employee.
"Oh, sorry about that. I thought the students left.." she laughed awkwardly, and Adrien felt his eyes direct to where the mirror would have been.
Before he could ask, Nino piped up from over his shoulder,
"What's with the mirror, dud- I mean, sir?" He asked curiously, and the worker shrugs.
"The mirror in the downstairs bathroom completely shattered into the size of tiny pebbles! It's taken us two weeks to make sure the replacement would properly fit its frame. Principal said something about right spacing? Thermal reasons?" She explained, but licks of confusion laced her voice. She seemed weirded out by the situation herself.
Adrien had only heard one thing that stood out to him..
Completely shattered? Little pebbles?
"How strange. Well, good luck on fixing the mirror" Adrien said his goodbye, and the employee moved out of the way to carefully go down the stairs.
The halls were empty, and the faint noises of chatter all came from the cafeteria. The blonde and his brunette friend walked toward it, one in deeper thought then the other.
"I never heard about a mirror shattering. I thought more people would talk about it, too" Adrien spoke his thoughts to Nino, who agreed,
"Yeah, thought the girls would've flipped. Guess it wasn't a hot topic?" He nudged his friend, who shrugged.
The two finally made an approach to the cafeteria, seeing a flood of students eat at rounded tables. Many chattered gossip, others shared funny memes, but the sight that stood out to adrien was your excited chatter with Marinette and alya.
The three of you seemed to be laughing about something, alya slapping her knee as she threw her head back laughing and Marinette giggling into her hand.
There was a proud smile on your face, which made him smile too.
You were always so happy, so cheerful as you used hand motions to likely explain an embarrassing story.
Maybe yesterday, you just had a bad day. We all have bad days. Sure, you can be quiet, but once out of your shell he knew how captivating you'd be to the people around you.
A jolly vibe seemed to waft in the air, making him eager to spend lunch with all his friends. This moment was important to him. This moment proved he didn't have to worry.
'(name's) right..I really need to stop worrying about them too much. I have to trust that they'll be okay'
