Chapter 5: Rustboro Gym! The Devon Coroporation and Mr Briney.
The gang had finally made it to Rustboro City and Winter couldn't wait to battle in her first Hoenn gym battle.
The gang met the gym leader, Roxanne yesterday and she was a teacher at the Pokémon academy in Rustboro City.
The Pokémon academy was a school where children and young adults went to learn about Pokémon.
There was a beginner's class for children, younger than ten, class where you could learn about being a Pokémon coordinator, a class where you could learn about being a Pokémon doctor and a class where you could learn about Pokémon battles.
And today Winter was going to battle her for a badge.
Rustboro Gym nearly looked like Pewter Gym because the building was modelled to look like a big chunk of pointy rocks, and even the battlefield was a rocky one.
There were cameras put up because Roxanne liked to film her challenges so that she would show them to her pupils to give them examples of gym battling.
Some of Roxanne's students were dealing with the camera and they loved to watch Roxanne's gym battles.
"I must say Winter," Roxanne said, "I hear that you are going to be entering contests as well as gym battles am I right?"
"That's right" Winter said, she took out her ribbon case and showed Roxanne the Rustboro Ribbon. "Before I started my journey here in Hoenn I decide to achieve another dream which is to become a Top Coordinator."
"What is your other dream?"
"My other dream is to become a Pokémon Master."
Brock chuckled, "Yeah and to be honest she actually achieving that dream pretty well." He said.
"Yeah." Tomo said.
"Oh really." Roxanne said in curiosity.
"Okay I get it." Winter said, "We'll talk about it after the battle." She sigh, "I find both gym battles and contests really find. Especially when it comes to combining Pokémon moves together."
"I understand that because I like being both the gym leader of this gym and being a teacher at the Pokémon academy," Roxanne said, "so I wish you luck in both gym battles and contests."
"Thank you." Winter smiled.
May explained about her decision of become a Pokémon coordinator and Roxanne wished her luck too.
"So Winter you ready for our gym battle?" Roxanne asked.
"You're right I am." Winter replied.
Winter and Roxanne took their places on the battlefield, and Tomo, Brock, May and Max sat on a bench at the side.
"This is exciting, seeing a gym battle for the first time." Max said.
May explained that she and Max were never allowed to watch their dad whenever he had challengers because he thought that May and Max may disturb the challenges.
"I understand that because when I was small I wasn't allowed to watch my dad's gym challenges either," Brock said, "besides gym leaders to need to be strict when they have a challenge."
The referee explained the rules about the gym challenge being a two on two Pokémon battles, and the trainer who defeats all two Pokémon first wins.
The cameras started filming and then the gym battle began.
Roxanne sent out a Geodude to battle first and Winter sent out Treecko.
"Why is Winter not using Mudkip, as Water type beats rock type?" Max asked.
"It's to save her secret weapon for last," Brock answered, "you see sometimes it's usually the best to save your strongest Pokémon for last, because you can never tell what you'll be up against in a Pokémon battle."
"Also big sister likes to test her Pokémon disadvantage." Tomo said and Brock nodded.
"Oh I see." Max said.
Winter ordered Treecko to use quick attack to start things off with.
Roxanne ordered her Geodude to use mega punch on Treecko.
"Treecko use iron tail." Winter said.
Treecko hit the mega puch directly with an iron tail.
"Okay Geodude use rollout." Roxanne said.
As Geodude rolled its way towards Treecko, Winter commanded Treecko to use dragon breath. Treecko's dragon breath attack hit Geodude, Treecko jumped out of the way.
But then Geodude started to feel all numb and paralyzed, dragon breath had the ability to paralyze the opponent sometimes.
"Try to use rock throw Geodude." Roxanne said.
"Use energy ball Treecko." Winter said. Treecko and Geodude struck each other with energy ball and rock throw, and then Geodude fell to the ground fainted.
So the first match goes to Winter.
"Wow Treecko won the first round." May said.
"Amazing how Treecko speed and power was just incredible." Max said.
"That's Winter for you." Brock said.
"Yep," Tomo chirped in, "her Pokémon are to unpredictable."
Roxanne returned Geodude and sent out a Nosepass next.
Nosepass is a blue, angular, hard bipedal Pokémon that closely resembles the Easter Island Heads. Its bright red, triangular nose is highly magnetic and slightly resembles a 3D arrow. It has arms and legs without any visible joints and small, circular holes on the undersides. Its arms resemble compass needles. It has similar circular holes on the sides of its head. Its eyes, covered by dark, somewhat mask-like markings, have the appearance of being closed
Nosepass, the Compass Pokémon.
Its magnetic nose always faces north and draws iron objects to its body to protect itself better.
"Nosepass sounds like an interesting pokemon to me," Brock said, "I think I'll catch one for myself yes."
Winter returned Treecko and sent out Mudkip to battle next.
"Nosepass will defiantly lose against Mudkip." Max said.
"That depends though on how well Roxanne fights with her Nosepass," Brock said, "you see you should never underestimate what type of Pokémon you face, because trainers work hard to help their Pokémon beat the opponents that their Pokémon can't normally defeat."
"Yeah and they can learn moves that can help beat their opponents," Tomo said, "like some water Pokémon can learn ice type attacks that beat grass type Pokémon, or some electric type Pokémon can learn fighting type moves that beat rock type Pokémon."
May and Max noticed that they really did have a lot to learn about being Pokémon trainers.
Roxanne commanded Nosepass to use sandstorm, and Mudkip got surrounded by a terrible sand storm.
Nosepass had no trouble with finding out where Mudkip was because its nose was like a compass and so Nosepass could tell where Mudkip was.
"Escape this sandstorm with dig Mudkip." Winter said. Mudkip dug into the ground to escape the sandstorm.
"That's a clever way to escape I must say," Roxanne said, "but Nosepass will tell where your Mudkip is hiding." She was right, Nosepass' compass nose helped it locate where Mudkip was hiding.
"Okay Mudkip come out and use water gun." Winter said. Mudkip jumped from out of the ground and struck Nosepass with water gun.
"That's a bull's-eye." Max said.
"Yeah, but Nosepass is not beaten yet." Brock said.
"Okay Nosepass let's use zap cannon." Roxanne said.
Winter wasn't really surprised that Roxanne's Nosepass knew an electric type move she knew about it, "Alright. Ready Mudkip use iron tail to hit back the zap cannon." Mudkip tail glowed and hit the zap cannon back at Nosepass.
Roxanne and her student were shocked what just happen including the gang. Mudkip actually hit the zap cannon back.
"Now use water gun Mudkip." Winter said. Mudkip struck Nosepass hard with water gym, and this time Nosepass fainted from the direct hit.
So Winter was the winner of the gym battle.
May and Max were impressed by this.
"So this is what a gym battle is like." Max said excitedly.
Roxanne and the students walked up to Winter.
"I must say Winter you really know how to deal with gym battles." Roxanne said.
"Well that's because I've battled in other gym battles before." Winter said.
"The video of today's match will defiantly give my students a good example," Roxanne said, "and now Winter I present to you the Stone Badge."
The Stone Badge was yellow and yellow-brown coloured and it was shaped like a rectangle with two of its corners more emphasized than the others.
Winter was happy to have won her first Hoenn gym badge and now she needed seven more badges to enter the Hoenn league.
-----------------------------•••--------------------------
After the Rustboro Gym had been dealt with, the gang was taking a break in the Pokémon Centre.
Winter was phoning Morty on her Xtransceiver to get updates on something important.
May was planning a shopping trip the city.
Brock and Tomo were looking through the guide together to see where they need to go next.
Max was spending time with Zigzagoon, Linoone, Poochyena and Shroomish. "Guys when I'm old enough to be a proper Pokémon trainer, we shall challenge gyms and collect badges too just like Winter is," he said, "but while we are traveling on a journey now, we shall catch some more Pokémon friends okay?"
Max Pokémon nodded to say yes.
Max had already planned on what to do on this journey, his plan was to capture more Pokémon for himself, especially normal type Pokémon and learn whatever he can about being a Pokémon trainer.
"The truth is my dream is to take my dad's place as the new gym leader of Petalburg Gym," Max said, "so let's get strong together to make my dream come true."
Max Pokémon spoke to say yes again.
At that moment Tomo was checking out his PokéNav, but it didn't seem to work, when he tried to push the button to turn it on it wouldn't work.
"Are the batteries dead?" Brock asked.
"Not the batteries are fine, but I don't know what's wrong." Tomo said.
Winter who had just finished her phone call, heard the commotion, "Hey what's going on?" She asked.
"My PokéNav isn't working," Tomo replied, "it doesn't turn on when I press the button."
Winter had a look at it, "The PokéNav must be jammed then," she said, "don't worry Tomo I know what we can do about it. When Professor Oak gave me the PokéNav he told me that they were made by a company called the Devon Corporation, and the company is here in Rustboro City so we can go there and see if we can get it fixed."
"Okay." Tomo said.
Max wanted to go to the Devon Corporation with Winter and Tomo too and Winter agreed.
"Okay Winter," Brock said, "you, Max and Tomo go to the Devon Corporation and I'll meet you two there when I'm done with my shopping."
"I'll meet you there too," May said, "I'm going to do some shopping myself."
So Brock and May went off shopping, while Winter, Tomo and Max set off for the Devon Corporation.
The Devon Corporation building was the biggest building in Rustboro City, and Winter, Tomo and Max had no trouble finding it at all.
"Wow what a big building." Max said surprised with how magnificent the Devon Corporation building was.
"I read on the computer that the Devon Corporation is famous for creating things like the PokéNav and other things." Winter said.
"Cool I hope we get to see some of the things they make here." Max said.
"Yeah but first we need to see if we can have Tomo's PokéNav fixed first." Winter said.
So they went inside the building and asked the lady at the reception desk if they could get Tomo's PokéNav fixed.
"I'm sorry," the lady said, "but I'm afraid we don't do repairs here"
"What? No way." Winter said.
"So now what we do?" Tomo asked.
Before Tomo's question could be answered, an elderly man in a smart suit and a male security guard came up to them.
"Is there a problem here?" The security guard asked.
Winter explained about Tomo's PokéNav not working.
"We think the button is jammed, so we came here to try and get it fixed." Winter said.
"May I take a look at the pokenav please?" The man asked in a smart suit.
Tomo gave the man his PokéNav.
"Yes this PokéNav is jammed," the man said, "but we can easily get it fixed."
"Really? Thank you." Tomo said.
The man revealed himself as Mr Stone, the president of the Devon Corporation.
"How about I show you around the place while we get your PokéNav fixed." Mr Stone said.
Winter, Tomo and Max were delighted and accepted the offer at once.
Winter explained to the security guard about her friends May and Brock. "They said that they would meet up with us here after they finished shopping."
"I understand," said the security guard, "I'll tell them where you are after they arrive."
"Thank you." Winter said.
So Mr Stone gave Ash, Max and Tomo a tour of the Devon Corporation.
"I must ask sir," Max said, "what do you create here apart from the PokéNav?"
"All sorts of different inventions." Mr Stone said. He explained that they made different PokéBalls, medicines and inventions.
"What inventions do you have?" Tomo asked.
"Well one of our inventions is a Pokémon producer that machine brings a Pokémon fossil back to life."
"Really?" Winter asked, "that's cool because Cinnabar Island in Kanto has a lab that brings a Pokémon fossil to life too. My friend Brock went there to have his Kabuto and Omanyte back to life from their fossils."
"Wow that's so cool," Max said, "I'll have to ask him about that."
Mr Stone also told them that they had created a Pokemon Dream Projector, which makes a visual projection of Pokémon, a Pokémon Transformer, which turns people into Pokémon, and a Pokemon Speaker, which allows communication with Pokémon.
"None of them work yet," Mr Stone said, "but we are still working on them to succeed."
"This is one amazing building." Max said.
Meanwhile May and Brock had finished their shopping by now and had arrived at the Devon Corporation.
The security guard met up with them and told them that they were with the president at the moment.
"So we'll wait here until Winter, Tomo and Max get back then." Brock suggested.
Just then an Officer Jenny entered the building, she informed the security guard that there were a report about a thief was lurking about in Rustboro City and she feared that he might steal something from the Devon Corporation.
"We better inform the president at once." The security guard said.
He and Officer Jenny went to tell the president at once, Brock and May followed them.
At that time, Mr Stone, Winter, Tomo and Max were following someone in a lab coat.
Mr Stone said that he knew every face of his employees and this man was not one of them.
"I must say," Winter whispered, "I sense something bad about this guy."
"And that's why we shall follow him." Mr Stone said.
They followed the man all the way up some stairs, which lead to the roof of the building.
Suddenly Max tripped and the man noticed their presence and ran up the stair quick.
"I think that guy's a thief." Winter said.
Winter, Max, Tomo and Mr Stone ran after him.
Mr Stone contacted the security guard on his mobile and told him what was going on.
The security guard had just got word that a sample from the Pokémon producer machine was stolen, so there was a chance that the man was responsible for the theft.
"I know a shortcut to the roof." The security guard said to Officer Jenny, May and Brock and they went at once.
Right now the man had made it too the roof and Winter, Max, Tomo and Mr Stone had caught up with him.
"The game's up!" Mr Stone shouted, "Now give back the sample you stole!"
"Not a chance." The man smirked and he released a primarily red, crustacean Pokémon with a tan underside. It has circular eyes set in deep sockets and a large, star-shaped growth on its forehead. The upper and lower halves of its underside are separated by a pattern of angular red shapes, and there are two blue stripes on its throat. Its forelimbs have two large pincers with spiked edges and tan lower halves form. There are two sets of hind limbs. The foremost pair are simple claws with two spikes, while the rear pair are large and thick with two white claws. A yellow triangle marks the base of its lobster-like tail, from its PokéBall.
"That's a Crawdaunt," Max said, "a water and dark type Pokémon."
Winter ordered Pichu to use thundershock on the Crawdaunt and the Crawdaunt got fried.
The man returned Crawdaunt to the PokéBall, but he wasn't willing to give up yet, he had a rocket propelled glider with him and was about to get away by using the glider.
"Oh no you don't!" Winter shouted, "Beautifly!" Her butterfly Pokémon appeared out of her PokéBall, "Beautifly extreme speed and gust to blow the guy back here." Beautifly speed increase and she reappeared in front of the thief shocking him and then she flapped her wings controlling the wind blew the guy back onto the rooftop building.
Just then the security guard, Officer Jenny, May and Brock turned up and they saw what Beautifly done.
Officer Jenny called her men and they arrested the man and returned the sample that he had stolen.
"That man is someone from Team Aqua." Officer Jenny said.
Officer Jenny explained to the gang about two criminal organizations that cause trouble in the Hoenn region called Team Aqua and Team Magma.
"I take it they are as bad as Team Rocket who cause trouble in the Kanto region?" Winter asked.
"Yes they are," Officer Jenny said, "and if you kids ever see them please contact me at once."
"We will." Brock said.
That evening the gang had dinner with Mr Stone, "I must say Winter your Pokémon are incredibly strong especially that Pichu and Beautifly of yours." He said.
Winter smiled, "Thank you Mr Stone," she said, "Pichu is my strongest Pokémon equal to Infernape."
"Oh, an Infernape." Mr Stone said, "Infernape are from Sinnoh."
"Yeah but I meet Infernape since she was Chimchar."
"Well you are an amazing kid Winter." Mr Stone said. Mr Stone told the gang about his son Steven Stone, who was also traveling on a journey. "Right now he is on Dewford Island."
"Dewford Island?" Winter said, "Hey that's where we are going to so I can get my next gym badge."
"Well if you are, then give Steven my regards while you're there." Mr Stone said.
"We will." Winter smiled.
Mr Stone gave Tomo back his PokéNav, which was now working again, so Tomo was happy now.
That night, when Tomo, Max, May and Brock were asleep, Winter was communicating with Mewtwo.
Ever since Officer Jenny told her about Team Aqua and Team Magma, Winter had the feeling that she and the others might end up seeing them again.
"Be on your guard with Team Aqua and Team Magma Mewtwo," Winter said, "I have the feeling that these two criminal organizations will do something bad."
"I understand Luna," Mewtwo said, "and contact me whenever you hear more about them."
"I will." Winter said.
Winter of course had no idea what Team Aqua and Team Magma were like, but she knew that she had to be on her guard, especially since she and her friends had to deal with Team Rocket lots of times before.
Winter sigh, 'Why do I have a bad feeling out this?' She thought and put her hand over her chest where the Jade Orb is located. 'Could they be after the Legendary Pokémon of Hoenn?' Winter shook her head. And went back to thinking of continuing her Hoenn region journey.
-----------------------------••••--------------------------
The next day the gang was figuring out what to do now.
They had missed the ferry and there was no other ferry for another few hours.
The truth is there were two harbors in Rustboro City, one was an old deserted harbor and the other a new built modern harbor.
The gang was hanging out at the old deserted harbor.
"I guess what we can do is relax for a bit and then we head off to the new harbor to catch a boat." Brock said.
"We might as well," Winter said, "except there's nothing really here to do."
"I know I'm going to have a walk round on the pier, so I'll see if there are any more boats for us to get to Dewford Island on." May said and she walked off.
"What May is going to do is walk along the beach," Max said, "she always go crazy when it comes to beaches."
Suddenly there was a noise coming from the sky.
The gang looked up and saw a colony of a small white seagull-like Pokémon. Its head makes up a large portion of its body, as it does not appear to have a neck. It has thin, simplistic eyes. It has two pointed, ear-like extensions on its head. Its beak is orange with hooked, black tips. Its wings have a long, thin shape and blue stripes. It has three tail feathers with blue tips that are short and fan-like. It also has two small orange feet, flying in the sky.
"Those are Wingull." Max said.
Wingull, the Seagull Pokémon.
It soars high in the sky, riding on updrafts like a glider. It carries food tucked in its bill.
"Those Pokémon look cool," Tomo said, "I'm going to catch one for myself." He sent out his Farfetch'd to battle; he retrieved Farfetch'd from Professor Oak's lab earlier.
"Farfetch'd use aerial ace on one of the Wingull." Tomo said. Farfetch'd charged towards the colony of Wingull.
All of the Wingull flew away, except one.
The Wingull attacked Farfetch'd with water gun.
"Don't give in Farfetch'd," Tomo said, "strike back with slash." Farfetch'd slashed at Wingull and then Wingull fell towards the ground.
Tomo pulled out an empty PokéBall and captured the Wingull.
All right we did it Farfetch'd!" Tomo cheered, he was happy with his new capture.
Max decided he would like a Wingull for himself too, and luckily enough there was a stray Wingull sitting on the pier.
"Hey Wingull I'm going to catch you." Max said and he called out Linoone.
The Wingull heard Max and Linoone and it got ready to fight. "Okay Linoone use swift." Max said.
Wingull got hit by a lot of stars and then it swooped down to use aerial ace.
"Counter it with headbutt Linoone." Max said. Linoone and Wingull charged at each other and then tackled each other hard.
Wingull became flinched by the headbutt and couldn't do anything.
Max tossed a PokéBall at the Wingull and caught it.
"Yeah we've captured a new friend Linoone!" Max cheered and he hugged Linoone.
Winter and Brock were happy for Max's and Tomo's captures.
Just then May turned up. "I met an old man named Mr Briney and he said that he would get us to Dewford Island in his boat." She said.
They were delighted to hear that.
Max told May of his capture of Wingull.
"Mr Briney has a Wingull too called Peecko." May said.
May led the way to Mr Briney's place and he had his boat ready. His boat was built in the shape of a Wingull.
"You lot ready to set sail to Dewford Island?" Mr Briney asked.
"Yes we are," May said, "and we thank you for this."
"It's no problem," Mr Briney said, "I may be a retired old sailor, but that doesn't been I've stopped sailing across the seas. Besides I've travelled to many places in my time like you youngins."
So thanks to Mr Briney, the gang was finally on the way to Dewford Island.
