(Rewrite) part 17: Luigi's Mansion

We followed Daisy out of the hospital. There, the three pokeys from before was waiting for us, and they looked relieved and happy to see us. I patted them on the head as a thank you, and they wiggled excitedly in return.

We went to Daisy's castle, which I had almost forgotten what it looked like. It was actually more like a gigantic mansion than a castle, with white walls and an orange roof, and a lot of windows with stained glass, depicting several different flowers. Daisy sure loved Flowers, and to top it all off it was right by the beach. It was truly a magnificent sight.

As we got inside of her ''castle'', I could see the ''fake'' Daisy walk up to us. She looked exactly like Daisy used to do in the good old days, with brown hair reaching to her shoulders (but I think it was just a wig) and her ordinary orange dress with a fake version of the flower crystal on her chest, she had no crown, but maybe she only wore it when she was on duty. She bowed down in front of Daisy.

''Your highness.'' She started. ''We have no information about any kidnapping plan from Bowser. Yet another day is safe.''

''Thank you, Lily,'' Daisy said, then looked at me. ''Oh, and please say hello to Rosalina, she will leave soon so this might be your chance.''

Lily looked at me and smiled excitedly. ''Princess Rosalina! I'm so happy to finally meet you, it's an honor! I've been so worried ever since I saw you get chased by Bowser during the last tournament!''

Oh yeah, she was there and saw the whole thing! I had forgotten about that.

I bowed to her. ''It is an honor to meet you too, ''Daisy''.'' I chuckled.

She blushed. ''Oh, you don't need to do that. I'm just a decoy.''

''Come on, Rosie,'' Daisy said. ''Luigi's in danger.''

''He is?!'' Lily exclaimed.

''Don't worry, Lily, Rosalina will fix it,'' Daisy assured her.

We were brought to the royal garden, where not a single piece of land wasn't covered with flowers. Daisy led us through the flowery maze of a garden until we arrived at a place filled with warp pipes. Some of them looked extremely old since they were covered with vines and flowers. Daisy pointed to a certain pipe surrounded by dead trees and bushes.

''The path to Boo's Woods is through that pipe.''

''Where do we have to go when we get to the other side?'' Shawn asked.

''There's a pathway nearby that will lead you to Luigi's Mansion. Just follow it and you'll be fine.''

I hugged Daisy. ''Thank you for helping us,'' I said. ''We'll make sure to find Luigi and bring him to safety.''

''Just try to be careful.'' She said. ''I don't want you to disappear when I already thought you had.''

I chuckled. ''Don't worry, I'm not completely helpless.''

Shawn jumped into the pipe first. But before I went in too, I turned around to get one last look at Daisy, you never knew if you would meet her again.

''It was fun meeting you after all of these years,'' I said and gave her a warm smile.

She smiled back. ''I wish it wasn't during the current circumstances. Otherwise, I would've made some tea and we could've talked all day long.''

''I'm sure we'll get our chance someday,'' I assured her. She waved goodbye to me, and I jumped into the pipe.

It took a minute before Shawn and I arrived at our destination, and when we did, I already got the creeps from the dark and dead forest.

''I can see the path,'' Shawn exclaimed and pointed in front of us on a small path almost covered in moss and dead leaves.

''Alright, let's go then,'' I said and jumped down from the pipe and helped him down.

We started following the path, and during the whole time walking I couldn't help but feel that someone was staring at us. These woods were filled with boos, so maybe they had seen us already. It didn't matter since when we cross the barrier they wouldn't be able to follow us anyway.

Suddenly, we collided with an invisible wall. I rubbed my forehead in pain from the impact and Shawn groaned.

''Are we here already? That was certainly fast.'' He said.

I took out Daisy's gem from my pocket and we both grabbed it with our hands. The barrier formed a hole in front of us, and on the other side, we could see the mansion. We walked through the barrier and I felt a sudden relief that we were in safety from the eyes of a boo.

''We made it!'' Shawn cheered.

''Yeah, now we just need to get Luigi, and then we have to get out of here.''

The mansion sure had seen better days. The white color of the walls was flaking, and the green roof needed new ceiling tiles. Some of the windows were broken, and one was even shattered. The garden around the mansion was overgrown and looked like a tiny jungle, and the metal fence surrounding the whole place had rusted.
When we arrived at the door, we knocked, but no one opened it. I tried to open it myself but it was locked.

''Let's search for another entrance,'' I suggested. Shawn only nodded in agreement and we went separate ways to look.

On the backside of the mansion, I tried to look through one of the windows, but none of them had been polished for ages and was completely covered in dirt and filth. I sighed in frustration and continued around the mansion until I saw one more window that had been shattered.

''Shawn! I found an entrance!'' I yelled. After a few moments, he came running to me. ''You think you can fit through this?'' I asked since the window was too small for me to fit through.

''No problem!'' He said. I helped him get up and he immediately started to try to get in.

''Watch out for the sharp glass shards,'' I said worriedly.

He soon managed to get inside and opened the window to let me in as well. ''Thanks,'' I said.

The inside of the mansion didn't look better than the outside. There were cobwebs everywhere, and dust covered every single thing. Some furniture had been flipped over, it almost looked like a fight had taken place here a long time ago.

''Luigi?'' I called out.

I got no answer.

''Maybe he's sleeping? Or hiding, thinking we're bad guys?'' Shawn asked.

''In any case, we have to search every room until we find him,'' I said and started walking through a corridor. ''You can take the west side of the mansion, I'll go this way.''

We parted our ways and started looking. I found the kitchen and a big living room with several pictures of different ghosts, but no sign of Luigi. I continued to look in every room I passed by and for a while, all I found was empty rooms with maybe one bed in them, probably guest rooms. I started getting tired of just finding bedrooms and bathrooms all the time.

When I arrived at the next door I told myself: ''Okay, if this is another goddamn bedroom I swear to god, I will burn this mansion down to the ground and look for Luigi in the goddamn ashes!''

But to my surprise, it wasn't a bedroom or a bathroom. It was a living room with a fireplace, bookshelves and some comfy seats scattered around the fireplace. Above the fireplace a picture was hanging, it was a picture of Luigi and his brother Mario, they were smiling happily and waved. I was actually baffled to see both of their faces after four years, I had almost forgotten what they looked like. The nostalgic feeling overwhelmed me a little bit. They looked so happy and had no worries in the world. I wonder when that picture was taken.

I looked around a little bit more. On one of the walls, the poltergust 3000 was hanging. I figured Luigi would keep it even though he didn't use anymore since he got the poltergust 5000 instead.

''Luigi?'' I called out again. Still no answer. This was getting tiring, I just wanted to go back to the resistance base again, where Waluigi was waiting.

I then noticed that one of the bookshelves were slightly out of place. I went up to it and looked at the four books on the shelf that didn't have any real titles, they just had one symbol on each of their covers. The symbols were an exclamation point, a music note, a question mark and a heart. I took them out of the shelf and noticed that the place they were standing on was some kind of pressure plate. It was very strange, but maybe it was part of some kind of code?

Suddenly the door opened behind me and Shawn walked in. ''Oh, hi.'' He said disappointedly. ''Any luck finding Luigi?''

''No, but look at this,'' I said and showed him the books. He stared at them for a moment. ''Hey, I know these symbols!'' He pointed out.

''You do?'' I replied confused.

''Yeah! What are you supposed to do with them?''

''I think I have to put them in this bookshelf in the right order or something?''

''Try putting heart, question mark, exclamation point, and music note.''

I did as he told me. Nothing happened.

''No, no, wait, that isn't right. I think it was heart, music note, question mark and exclamation point.''

I put the books in that order and nothing happened again.

''Wait! Switch places with the question mark and exclamation point!''

I switched the places of the two books and suddenly the bookshelf started moving, it moved to the side to reveal a stairway.

''How did you know the code?'' I asked.

''The legend of the seven stars is one of Mario's old adventures. The symbols are their friend Geno's name.'' Shawn explained.

I had no idea of what he was talking about, I had never heard anything about a legend of some stars. But whatever, we solved the puzzle.

The stairway lead to the attic. It was lit up by lanterns hanging from the ceiling, and they lead to a door. I took a deep breath before opening, and when I did I saw him: Luigi. He was curled up into a ball, quietly sobbing. The poltergust 5000 was lying next to him and above him was... a hanging noose?!
