EXTENDED SYNOPSIS.
MAEVE DAVIS WAS NOT entirely invisible in Stars Hollow, despite her occasional desire to be. In fact, she was often in the spotlight, in spite of her considering herself the town's most prominent fraud.
Despite her best attempts at trying to prevent her oblivious, albeit incredibly generous, neighbours from placing her on a towering pedestal that could potentially lead Maeve to enter egotistical territory if she wasn't careful, the girl could only hopelessly watch as the townspeople of Stars Hollow classified her as their flawless beauty queen.
The immense honour was certainly not missed by Maeve, however, to her, all she was, was just a naive teenage girl who was simply trying to people-please her way through life.
Perhaps the high praise from her peers was manifested from sympathy. She wouldn't put it past them if it was. After all, her father abandoned her several years ago under the ruse of a 'business endeavour' after ten years of raising his daughter as a single father, consequently resulting in the young girl living with her grandmother—on her mother's side, of course. The only contact she received from her deadbeat father was the occasional, fifteen-minute at the maximum, phone call. Consequently, as Maeve grew up, she had soon learned that Tim's empty promises were not to be trusted, and chose to classify his insignificant words as just that—insignificant.
So, Maeve Davis was no stranger to trauma. She certainly knew what it felt like to be abandoned by someone who was supposed to be her protector, her father, and the frequent, high admiration directed towards her by her neighbours only fuelled her imposter syndrome—not that she'd let anyone see it, though.
To the rest of the world, she seemed optimistic, self-assured, and could most definitely overthrow the rotting plague that was commonly known as self-doubt, although when it came to Maeve's own opinion about herself, those notions could not be more false.
Despite the fact, Maeve Davis wasn't the only one the town of Stars Hollow had been quick to oh-so eagerly favour.
Rory Gilmore was the town's 'golden girl', leaving Maeve to be the local princess; it was expected that the two girls with highly promising futures would obviously become close friends. It was supposed to just...work. Everyone was seemingly enamoured by the youngest Lorelai—everyone but Maeve, who always felt apart of the latter opinion when it came to debates about Rory Gilmore.
Sure, the Gilmore girl had her moments, but Maeve was simply indifferent about her. Rory appeared to have gotten everything that she could ever want right at her fingertips, despite the girl not being able to see it at all. Maeve didn't necessarily hate her, nor did she envy her, in fact, she was actually quite relieved that the town occasionally redirected their attention to someone else whenever they pleased, but that's not to say that she didn't infrequently wonder what the fuss was all about with Rory Gilmore.
Especially when Jess Mariano, who Maeve was slowly learning to like, suddenly seemed to direct his affections towards her.
It seemed as though even Jess, who Maeve unquestionably didn't expect to fall for Rory Gilmore, seemed to be under her spell of innocence.
But Jess' interest in Rory's perfect life was not what confused Maeve Davis the most. What fuelled her perplexity was how, just when she was slowly beginning to come to terms with the harrowing fact that she was actually falling for the intolerable and John Bender-esque Jess Mariano, the boy seemed to have suddenly forgotten about all the progress they had made; the friendship they had seemed to form after a gruesomely long set of teasing and petty belittling months.
Making and sharing mixtapes, which was usually accompanied by a long debate about how awful the artists each other listened to were and how they both apparently had "no taste", according to one another, among many other smaller interactions that Maeve had subconsciously, internally cherished, the girl had tried to refuse to believe that she had just wasted her time trying to get to know Jess for all those months.
To Maeve, the only way she could explain their dynamic was by comparing their back-and-fourths to solving a satisfying puzzle or finishing a beautiful artwork; once you've found the last piece, the entirety of the picture finally gets painted.
The underlying meaning behind every one of their interactions and rare moonlight rendezvous was certainly not lost on Maeve, and she had automatically assumed it wasn't on Jess either; he was a smart boy, after all.
But as if Jess' crush on Rory had suddenly formed out of thin air, the boy had began to change—minutely, of course, and Maeve felt as though she was the only one who could see it, just like she was the only one who could see through him, and how she understood him more than anyone else.
She saw how he ever-so-slightly stiffened when Rory walked into the diner, how jealousy gradually crept up into his chest at the sight of Rory and Dean holding hands and walking down the street, how his eyebrows quirked up in interest whenever the youngest Gilmore passionately spoke about school, and how his eyes trailed after her as she walked out of a room, to simply name a few occasions.
It was especially in those fleeting moments where Maeve desperately regretted taking those looks for granted when she was on the receiving end of them—even if Jess' intention with them was to only provoke her.
Before her heart could twist any more at the sight of Jess developing a crush on Rory, Maeve simply tried to move on, blocking out Jess' uncharacteristic behaviour and trying to return back to how life was before she came to the realisation that she actually didn't hate Jess. All she wanted to do was to return back to how her and Jess' playful dynamic was before the boy focused more of his energies on to Rory Gilmore.
So, as Maeve tried to forget about her budding feelings for Jess, putting aside her intuition and naturally second-guessing nature in order to do so, she failed to notice that Jess had only forced himself to like Rory after he came to the assumption that Maeve could never possibly return his unspoken feelings for her.
