You can never be friends with a client.

The words repeated over and over in Vienna's head, as she sat on Dexter's couch in front of the tv with a cigarette in her mouth.

Never.

"Hey." Dexter's voice interrupted her thoughts as soon as he walked through the door with armfuls of plastic bags filled with various foods.

"Well look at that." Vienna says. "You're buying your own groceries now?"

"Apparently." He smiles as he plops down on the couch next to her.

"Are you feeling ok?" She asks sarcastically, as she places her hand on his forehead to check his temperature.

"Oh har har." He says. "For your information, I only did it because I was sick of eating nothing but healthy things."

"Oh what torture." She says sarcastically. "You are like a five year old trapped in a twenty year old's body."

She watches him as he laughs and shakes his head.

You can never be friends with a client.

"So what are you watching?" He asks.

"Well," she starts. "I haven't really been paying attention, but it seems like Marisa is in love with Ben, and Ben is in love with Claire, who happens to be Marisa's sister, and Claire is also pregnant with Ben's baby and Claire's sister Marisa has no idea because Ben lied and told her that he was in love with her instead of Claire."

"Oh." Dexter says. "It's clear you haven't been paying attention very much."

"It's actually pretty boring." Vienna says as she lays back and tries to get comfortable.

"Ahh."

Dexter looks like he wants to say something, but decides to keep his mouth shut.

"What is it?" Vienna asks him. "You were going to say something."

"It's nothing." He says.

"Come on. Spill."

Dexter looks at her and gives a sigh.

"You're paying for my rent. Do you know how expensive it is?" He says. Vienna gives him a funny look.

"That's what you wanted to say?"

"Actually," he starts. "I wanted to know what the hell you do for a living that gives you the money to pay for this place."

She sighs and turns her attention back towards the TV.

I steal people's money for a living, she thinks to herself.

"I'm a pharmaceutical consultant." She says out loud.

For the first time in the three months she had been living there, she felt guilty lying to him.

"Oh." He says, lying back and getting comfortable. "That explains a lot."

She gives a fake smile as she closes her eyes and rests her head on his shoulder.

You can never be friends with a client.
