Ch.16 Future
Everything was bare. His books weren't stacked up on the desk, the dresser was empty, all his toiletries were packed up in one of his boxes, and his bed was back to the standard sheets that the school provided. Grian held Snowcone tightly in his arms as he took one last glance over the room, making sure he hadn't forgotten anything. It was so weird to see his room empty. He felt like it had been his for years now versus only one.
He sighed, giving Snowcone one more squeeze before laying him in the last box and sealing it up.
Grian was going to miss this dorm, miss seeing the others every day. He barely blinked and high school was over.
"The Movers are here! Let's Go!" Taurtis called from the living room.
Sam skipped down the hall followed by J, who was busy on his phone. Grian made sure he had labeled his box before heading out. Taurtis and Dom stood out of the way to let the Movers through. Sam was buzzing with excitement; rocking on his heels as he talked.
"I want to see the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower and the Palace of Versailles. Oh! And I really want to look at the Jardin des Serres d'Auteuil."
"We can do whatever you want," J promised, not taking his eyes off his screen.
"Oh! I want to tour Bouvet-Ladubay and the Strasbourg Cathedral."
"Does everyone have everything packed?" Taurtis asked.
"Yeah."
"Should be."
"Then we should head downstairs and let them do their thing," Taurtis ushered them all out of the room.
"I really want to take a picture of ancient roman toilets."
J cracked a smile, "I'll add it to the list."
"I'm serious, J! It's just rows of holes! They crapped right next to each other and didn't bat an eye!"
"Amazing," J drawled.
"And do a handstand with the Leaning Tower of Pisa!"
Dom groaned, "Please stop making travel plans around me or I'm sneaking into your suitcase."
"I asked if you wanted to come," J reminded him.
He crossed his arms and huffed, "Taurtis said no."
Taurtis scoffed, "Don't blame this on me. I gave you options."
"Ultimatums," Dom grumbled.
Grian frowned, "You're not even going to see Taurtis very much."
"That's not the point! Besides, I've already told Ms. Music that I'll be staying with her while Taurtis is with his parents."
"Awe," Sam leaned against Dom's shoulder, "Dommy's gonna help out the elderly."
"Taurtis's grandmother makes really good pancakes and cookies. That lady can cook."
"And she's not that old."
Sam scowled, "She's a grandma!"
"She had my mom when she was twenty-two. My mom had me when she was eighteen. Not that old," Taurtis reasoned.
"Plus, she'll unleash the gates of hell if she hears you say that," Dom teased.
"I don't think she'll like that either," Grian chuckled.
Sam giggled as he rushed to open the door to the dormitories, "I can't believe I'll never see this place again!"
He stopped just outside the doors, turning to face them with a pout and his ears hanging low, "I can't believe I'll never see this place again."
"Oh no. Not again," J mumbled as he rushed to comfort the bunny boy.
Dom rolled his eyes, "You're so dramatic."
"Well, excuse me for having feelings, Dom!"
"Don't start," Taurtis scolded.
"Yeah, we've got to go soon," J finally put his phone away.
"Already?" Sam's ears drooped again.
"It's a long flight if we want to get there tomorrow."
Sam pouted but didn't argue. Instead, he charged Grian, trapping him in a tight hug. Grian only stayed upright because Taurtis placed a hand against the small of his back.
Sam wrapped his arms around Grian's neck, leaning in to whisper in his ear, "I'm gonna miss you, Grian. I'll send you emails and you better respond."
He pressed a quick kiss to Grian's lips before letting go and leaping on Taurtis.
J cupped his face and pulled him into a kiss, "Thank you."
"For what?"
J shrugged. "I don't know. I'll miss studying with you. Among other things," he grinned.
Giran laughed, "I'll miss you too. If I have questions, can I text you?"
He nodded, "Yeah. I don't know why Sam's so set on the email thing."
Sam blew final kisses at them as he and J walked off to where their ride was waiting.
Taurtis and Dom walked him to where his mom had dropped him off when he'd first came to the school. It made him feel a little nostalgic. It also brought to light that this was really the last time he'd get to see them for a while.
"My Dad's jet just landed."
Dom frowned, "Does that mean we're staying at his bachelor pad for a while?"
Taurtis rolled his eyes, "We just got him to sign papers, Dom."
"So they're still living together? Awk-ward."
"They're still best friends. Besides, that is hush-hush information."
Taurtis glanced over to find Grian staring at them with a wistful expression. He gave him a smile, "Grian?"
He shrugged, "I'm just gonna miss this."
Dom groaned, "Oh no. Not you too."
Despite his words, Dom pulled Grian into a hug, burying his face in the crook of his neck, "I'll miss you too, little nerd."
He kissed Grian's neck and pulled away, "I'd give you a proper kiss, but then I'm really not gonna let go."
Taurtis just spread his arms out. Grian giggled as he latched onto him. Taurtis rocked them from side to side, "Take care of yourself. Remember to eat and that tea does not count as water."
Grian smiled as he pulled him down into a kiss. Taurtis pulled away to rest his forehead against his. He pressed a kiss to his nose and then let go.
Grian glanced over his shoulder to see his mom pulling up to the curb.
"I gotta go," he gestured over his shoulder.
They waved as he jogged to her rental car.
He sighed as he got in, "Hi mom."
She had a wide smile on her face, "So..."
"So?" Grian frowned as he leaned against the car door.
"Don't think I didn't just see that, Grian. I have eyes."
Grian couldn't help the smile that crept onto his face.
His mother giggled, buzzing with excitement, "Tell me everything!"
Grian shook his head, "Where do I even begin?"
***
Grian sighed as he dropped his bag onto the floor. He was tempted to just flop onto the bed, but the rough draft of his essay was due tomorrow and he had just one more paragraph to do.
He didn't know what possessed him to choose architecture and interior design, but here he was. His mom liked it, always trying to ask him for advice on the layout of the living room. Dom had laughed. Sam had liked the idea of at least one of them knowing what they were doing when they bought a house. That comment had left a few of them red during their video chat.
Sam and J were wrapping up their trip to Greece and preparing for Italy. Dom had already been shipped to Grammie Music's estate. She was appreciating the company and Dom was meeting different family members that came to visit. Grian knew he was studying something, at a very leisurely pace, but he had never figured out what. Taurtis was in Japan for a conference with one of his uncles, as well as taking some time out of his schedule to visit his sister.
He scrolled through his files, clicking on his essay. He also brought up his email, since his professor had decided to just email them the requirements instead of just posting it on the forum like he said he would, but whatever.
He frowned when he saw a new email, but immediately brightened when he saw who it was from: Sam had finally sent one of the emails he promised. Dom had been hounding him about that for weeks now.
Sam spoke about all the things he and J did and everything they saw. Grian found it so adorable that Sam was so excited about traveling. He had attached a load of pictures that were slowly loading in. There were pictures of them posing at the Parthenon and a bunch of other temples. They also had a collection of ones from the National Archaeological Museum. Grian chuckled at the ones where Sam got J to pose with a silly face.
As Grian looked over the pictures, trying to match up the ones Sam mentioned in his message, he could feel each one pulling on his heartstrings. He missed them so much, even video chats weren't enough for him. He sort of wishes he had opted to join them, but he knew he'd never be able to keep up with school work. Especially with Sam dragging him everywhere. He wondered how J was doing it.
While it was all adorable and made Grian feel included in their trip, did he have to send so many photos? It was saying there was ninety-nine plus and Grian really had to finish his essay, but he knew he'd never remember to come back and-Oh... So that's what Sam meant.
Grian glanced at his bedroom door, before rolling over on his chair and flicking his lock. That paragraph could wait a little longer.
