Chapter 5

***

"Attention passengers this is your flight attendant speaking, we'll like to inform you that we'll be landing in Denver in less than five minutes so we need you to fasten your seatbelts, put your trays up, and turn off any of your electric devices. Also, if you're in the bathroom or standing up, we're asking you to please sit down to provoke any accidents. Thank you."

The speaker turned off at the same time a green light just above the exit doors turned on with a little cartoon of a seatbelt.

I looked down and noticed I already had on my seatbelt. When I turned to look at the empty seat next to me, I noticed Niall come back from the bathroom and take his seat.

"Hey, I heard the announcement. I can't believe we're almost landing." He spoke looking down to buckle his seatbelt.

"I know." I turned to look out the window next to me.

I noticed all of the buildings we were flying above of. Though I couldn't really notice how it was, it was absolutely different from California.

I couldn't believe this was it. I'm going to finally see my father for the first time ever. I couldn't tell if I was excited or scared or if I was even excited. All these emotions stayed stirring around my stomach. At least I had Niall back on my side, I really needed his support now that I don't have my mother with me. It's amazing how much I already miss her.

"Hey." Niall spoke causing my head to turn.

"It's going to be okay." He smiled.

I nodded my head, praying that he ment what he said and that it would happen.

Little after that, we sat quiet, mainly looking outside the airplane widow to our new home before we felt the plane come to a gentle land and the speaker come back on.

"Attention passengers, this is your pilot speaking, I'm finally pleased to inform you that we've arrived to your destination. Please watch your step as you exit the plane and make sure you don't leave any belongings behind. Welcome to Colorado and thank you for choosing Jet California."

The sounds of seatbelts being unbuckled and passengers standing up to get their carry ons above them filled the silent atmosphere. I unbuckled mine and stood up, waiting for Niall to get his out so we could then move out.

I'm not going to lie, it was hard to get out, lots of scary looks were given to me as I walked by. Niall had to lean in and silently whisper in my ear to hold my purse close. I nodded and did as he told me. Before we knew it, we were out of the plane after being dismissed by the pilot and into the tunnel to get back into the Colorado airport.

Niall stood by my side the entire time, still in alert with two mysterious looking gentlemen that sat in front of us in the plane.

We had to go through a number of amounts of checking until we finally reached the hallway where families and friends would be waiting for their relatives to leave the plane.

This is it...

I told myself over and over again add the glass doors became more and more visible. The people behind it becoming more and more descriptive. But who could he be? Is he even here? I've never seen him and Mom didn't bother to give me a picture or something of what he looks like.

Glancing up at Niall, I noticed he already had his eye on someone in particular. I started to trace the imaginary line that connected his eyes to the object but found no man in particular.

"Niall, how do we know that's Robert?" I asked.

Niall didn't look down, he keeped his vision up to look at the object.

"Niall?" I asked again.

"We'll know." He said looking forward.

His words didn't leave me so sure about this, Niall hasn't seen him in ages so he has to stop this nonsense to prove he's better at remembering things or something.

We finally reached the glass doors that were opened for us to join our waiting relatives. I watched as the people in front of us reached the person they knew, mentally crossing out their heads knowing that's not who we're expecting.

Once I noticed that we were the only ones left in the back due to our slow walking, I felt a strong grip grasp my arm. I winced in the sudden pain as I looked up at Niall. My mouth opened to speak to him but I then noticed what it was he might be so shocked for.

"That's him." He spoke looking straight at a tall, buff man.

My heart started to race, panic rose through my body at the sight of Robert. He was tall, seemed to be around Mom's age with dark brown eyes that pierced at both Niall and I as we stood our ground. He had dark black hair along with light stubble around his chin area and upper lip connecting to his sideburns. A big light brown jacket covered his torso under a red plaid shirt and a grey t-shirt, his jeans hung around his waist with a pair of timberland boots.

I was surprised at how much he looked like me, in a way? Mom and Niall we're always the ones with the similar looks and I was the odd one out. But it all makes scene now.

I can't believe it, that's my father.

"Come on." Niall held my hand.

We walked forward to the male all the way in the end of the crowd, smuggled between people. I watched as Robert then started to walk up to us at the same time.

Moments later, we became so close, I thought he'd stop. But he didn't.

Robert swung his strong arms around my body, pulling me into a strong embrace. I was shocked at first, not knowing how to react to his action. But the feeling made my eyes tear up. I wanted to cry, finally I was in his hold and it was the best feeling in the world. My eyes closed, Niall's hold on my hand was released so I could wrap my arms around him.

"I have a daughter." He smiled over my shoulder.

He never new what I was, I wasn't surprised but it was his choice to leave us while he had the chance, while I want even born.

Robert held me tighter, almost afraid to let go. But I guess knowing that Niall was right behind me, he had to.

"And Niall..." He smiled embracing him.

"I know, Robert." Niall smiled over his shoulder.

The way Niall called him by his first name didn't seem to bother him that him much and he should expect the same from me. I'm not used to saying the word Dad and meaning it to be my Dad . But this is just progress.

Robert pulled away to look back at us, a smile that never left his face acknowledged us.

"Niall and Leah. Who knew you kids wouldn't turn out to be kids anymore?" He paused, "You're practically adults!"

Niall and I could only smile, not knowing what else to do.

"Look at me, I'm wasting your time. Come on, let's get you two home." Robert smiled.

"What about our luggage?" Niall asked as Robert turned around.

"Oh right, so sorry son. I almost forgot." He chuckled, "Well let's hurry then."

****

"Is this your house?" I asked glancing out the black pickup's window.

Everything was foggy here in Colorado. I know it must be the weather but it was completely different from California. Mom was right, our life's are going to change a lot.

Robert's house was a small, cozy looking two story house with brick exterior walls. It wasn't as big as our last house but it was a decent size. The front lawn was covered in plants, a small driveway came into the garage.

"It's our house now." He smiled pulling up to the newly opened garage.

We stepped out once he turned off his truck and stayed close to it. Robert walked over to the back and one by one, we grabbed every last of our luggage. He lead us to a door that was inside the garage and also led to the inside of the house.

I was surprised at how different his house was then what I expected. There was a big kitchen in front of the door we came out of but it was to the left if we came in by the front door. A large living room was right where we entered, bookcases surrounded the area providing a cozy feeling to it. And right in between the living room and kitchen was an ample wooden staircase.

It was a beautiful home and a tidy one too for just one man living in it.

"You can step in, don't be shy." Robert suggested.

I didn't even notice I was standing in front of them because I was so interested in the type of house in front of me. It was nothing I was ever used to and I think I liked it better this way then the huge modern houses my mother would always pick.

"What do you think?" He asked.

I heard the door shut and bags drop down to the ground.

"It's nice." I answered looking back at him.

"Yeah, it's different." Niall looked around.

"I know it's not what you two are used to but I think it's a good start?" He walked in front of both Niall and I.

"So what do you say we get you guys settled in?"

Niall and I didn't have time to respond before we noticed Robert started to move up towards the stairs. We followed him, Niall in front of me, up the stairs to enter a wide hallway with doors on each side.

Robert made a sudden stop at the first door in the left, "Niall, you can have this room."

The door opened but I didn't have enough time to look inside it before Niall stepped in. He didn't have much enthusiasm as he did so and closed the door.

Robert tried not to show how much it hurt him that Niall's acting like that and continued walk further out into the hallway.

We passed another door that was next to Niall's room which Robert said was the bathroom. He then stopped at the last door in the opposite hallway.

"And Leah, you can have this one." He swung the door open and revealed a small room, not to small, but just right for me.

There was a queen sized bed with the side facing the door, two big doors that when opened would have a small balcony on the other side, and some other furniture to fill up the space.

"Is this okay?" I heard Robert's voice speak behind me.

"Yeah," I nodded, "This is prefect."

"Great, I'll leave you unpack and maybe rest a little, you must be tired after this long day."

I nodded my head.

"And if you two are feeling better tomorrow, I want to catch up with you kids. Also, I want you to meet the guys." He smiled setting my luggage in front of me.

"Guys?" I asked, "What guys?"

"Oh, I work with some guys that also go to the school you and your brother would be enrolled in so I thought it'd be nice if you two get to know them better since they'll be around very often and I also thought it'd be a good idea if you guys make some new friends."

I looked at Robert with a fake smile of enthusiasm. I wasn't planning on meeting new people yet, I suck at that. And especially guys.

"They're really nice, you'll have friends immediately." He smiled walking over to the door.

"Great." My voice cracked.

I cleared my throat and put on another one of my fake smiles, "Can't wait!"
