Chapter 15
As Anika was gathering the last of her belongings, her eye fell on a pile of letters. Most of them were addressed for Gauri so she thought to hand them back to her but one letter caught her eye. It was sent from the university in New York, where Gauri was previously studying. The letter was already opened, so Anika took out the paper from the envelope.
Anika: Arrey Gauri tumne mujhe nahi bataya ki tumhare results aagaye
(Hey Gauri you didn't tell me that you got your results)
She asked her sister as she walked into the room
Gauri: Di darasal...
(Di actually...)
When her eyes fell on the paper in Anika's hand, they immediately widened and shock filled her face.
Gauri: Yeh toh kuch nahi hai, bas formality ka letter hai
(This letter is just sent as a formality)
It didn't take Anika long to guess that her sister was hiding something from her. So she quickly opened the letter and read through it. Gauri could only just watch, unable to stop her from reading any further.
Anika: Gauri yeh kushi ki baat hai, I'm so proud of you
(This is good news Gauri, I'm so proud of you)
Gauri: Lekin mein nahi jaari
(But I'm not going)
Anika: This is everything you have worked for Gauri, how can you say no?
Gauri: Mujhe pata hai ki yeh mera sapna hai, Paris mein ek fashion boutique kholna. Par usse zyada important aap ho mere liye.
(I know what this is my dream, opening a fashion boutique in Paris. But for me, more important than that is you)
Anika knew exactly what she was thinking, but she knew she couldn't be the one to stand in between her sister's dream.
Gauri: Mein aapko yaha akele nahi rehne doon sakti. Pehle Papa tha lekin aab?
(I can't let you stay here alone. Before Papa was here but now?)
Anika: Papa gaye, lekin hum akele nahi pade. Iss ghar ke saare family members humse utna pyaar karte jitne voh karte the.
(Papa left, but we didn't fall alone. All of the members of this house love us as much as he did)
Stretching her hand out to wipe the unshed tear in Gauri's eye, she continued to convince her
Anika: He left a whole family to take care of us, how will I be alone?
Gauri: Par kal aapne bola tha, event ke raat per, mere bina aap kese sambhal lenge?
(But yesterday you said, the night of the event, without me how will you handle?)
Anika: Voh toh mein aise hi bol rhi thi
(I was just saying it like that)
As they both chuckled with teary eyes, Anika took Gauri into a tight hug.
Anika: Sirf 6 maheene ki baat hai, aur beech mein tum vaapis bhi aa satki
(It's only a matter of 6 months, and in between, you can come back)
Anika: But I won't let you go before my birthday
Gauri: Mein usse pehle jaaoungi nahi
(I won't go before that)
They both parted the hug.
Anika: Mein kuch sort out karungi
(I'll sort something out)
Anika: yeh baat abhi kisi ko mat batana, varna hume jaane nahi denge
(Don't tell this to anyone, or else they won't let us go from here)
Tej: Kya nahi batana hume?
(What don't you want to tell us?)
Tej and Shivaay stood at the door, and both became concerned once they saw tears in their eyes.
Anika: Kuch khaas nahi, bas Gauri ko nahi jaana. In dinno mein hum aap sab se itne close aagaye, jaana asaan nahi raah
(Nothing special, just Gauri doesn't want to go. In these days we have gotten so close to all of you that it isn't easy to leave)
Tej: Toh phir mat jaa, yahi ruko
(So then don't go, stay here)
Anika: Tej Uncle aap jaante, hamesha ke liye thodi naa hum yaha rehenge
(Tej Uncle you know, we cannot stay here forever)
Shivaay: Par shaadi ke baad yahi rehne wali ho
(But after the wedding you will stay here only)
His small mutter was only heard by Gauri, who tried her level best to contain her laughter.
Anika: aapne kuch bola?
(Did you say something)
She didn't quite hear what he spoke, so asked for some clarity, But Shivaay said it was nothing. Tej went and gave the two a big hug.
Tej: Agar kisi bhi cheez ki zaroorat hai toh hume bata lena
(If you need anything then let us know)
Gauri: of course Uncle
Tej: Gauri tum mere saath aao, Jhanvi tumhe bulari thi
(Gauri you come with me, Jhanvi was calling you)
Gauri followed him out of the room and Shivaay immediately went forward to Anika.
Shivaay: Jaana zaroori nahi hai Anika, tujhe pata hai yaha kuch aur din ruk sakti
(It's not necessary to go Anika, you know you can stay here for a few more days)
Anika: Aap nahi samjhoge
(You won't understand)
Shivaay: Toh phir samjhao
(Then make me understand)
He caught onto her hand as she was moving away from him. If only he could somehow convince her to stay behind.
Anika: Mujhe jaana hai
(I have to go)
She herself didn't wish to leave the mansion. If she could, she would stay here forever. But a small voice in her head told her that she needed to go. Just to prove to herself that she was capable of doing something on her own after her father's demise. Whether it was making him proud or achieving something for her own self, it felt like the right thing to do. And she still had the chance to see Shivaay at work, so it wouldn't be all bad. She had to make sure that no one found out about Gauri's going to Paris, or else she would land herself in deep trouble with the family, especially Shivaay.
Shivaay: Anika
He shook her by her shoulders to bring her out of her thoughts. When her eyes met with his, she could make out how protective he was of her. Not just her, but he and Gauri also managed to get along well in this time. He regarded her as his younger sister and would go to lengths to help her.
Anika: We'll be fine
Shivaay: Are you sure?
Anika: Yes Shivaay
He only passed a smile to her and called for the servants to keep her bags in the car. When they both went down to meet everyone, they all asked the sisters to stay behind. Skillfully Anika avoided the question as to why they were leaving, as she didn't want her answer to make anyone feel bad. After dropping them off at their new home, Shivaay offered to stay behind but got a call from his office summoning him there.
After his work, he returned home and found Om and Rudra patiently waiting for him in his room.
Shivaay: Kya hua tum dono ko?
(What happened to you both?)
Seeing their faint smirks, he straight away knew they were up to some mischief.
Om: Kuch nahi, bas soch rhe the
(Nothing, we were just thinking)
Shivaay: What?
Rudra: Ki ab aap kya karenge?
(What will you do now?)
Shivaay: Matlab?
(Meaning)
Rudra: Anika Didi aab toh apne ghar gayi
(Anika Didi has gone to her house now)
Not knowing how to reply to that, he ignored him.
Shivaay: Tujhe bhi iske baare mein kuch bolna?
(Do you have to say something about this as well?)
Om: Nahi, bas mujhe laga tha ki voh thora tensed lagri thi subha
(No, just I thought that she seemed a little tense in the morning)
Shivaay: Haan, maine bhi notice kiya
(Yes, I also noticed that)
Rudra: Shayad thora nervous hai
(Maybe they're a little nervous)
When he looked down, he saw his phone in his hands. That reminded him why he was there.
Rudra: Vese kal function ke pictures bahut ache hai. Aapko dekhna?
(By the way, the pictures from yesterday's function are very nice. Do you want to see?)
He forwarded the phone and Shivaay looked at them. As he swiped through the images, he became confused only seeing Rudra's pictures.
Shivaay: Isme sirf tere photos kyu hai?
(Why does this only have your photos?)
Rudra: Kohi aur mera help nahi kara hai, aap batao inme se kaunsa acha hai?
(No one else is helping me, you only tell out of these which one is good?)
Shivaay rolled his eyes at his brother's request, and let out a small chuckle too.
Rudra: Bhaaiya, yeh serious maamla hai
(Bhaaiya, this is a serious matter)
Shivaay: Serious kese?
(How is it serious?)
Rudra: Kal meine Gauri Didi ko challenge kiya, kisko zyaada likes milega apne post per
(Yesterday I challenged Gauri Didi, who can get the most likes on their post)
Om: And I told him that he'll surely loose
Shivaay continued scrolling on the phone and found a cute candid picture of him and Anika. It bought him back to the moment they had when the photo was captured, and soon an idea came to his mind. He sent the photo to his phone and returned Rudra's device to him.
Shivaay: Tu kuch bhi daalo, challenge toh harr jayega
(You put anything, you'll lose the challenge anyway)
Rudra grumbled at his useless brothers and strode off.
Shivaay: Tere paas kohi decent photos hai kya?
(Do you have any decent photos?)
Om: yes, lots
As they were looking at the pictures, Anika was keeping her clothes away in her new home.
Gauri: I still don't like the idea of you living alone Di
Anika: Gauri main keh rhi hoon that I'll be fine
(Gauri I'm telling you that I'll be fine)
Gauri: Lekin mujhe pata hai Bade Bhaaiya nahi manna karega agar aap vaha rukhti
(But I know that Bade Bhaaiya won't mind if you would have stayed behind.)
Using a teasing tone, Gauri smirked at her sister and took some clothes from her.
Anika: I miss him already
Gauri: Di hum bas ek ghante pehle yaha paunch gaye
(Di we only reached here an hour back)
Anika: Mujhe nahi pata kya hai, lekin jab main uske saath hoti toh main vaha se jaana nahi chaati
(I don't know what it is, but when I'm with him I don't want to leave from there)
Gauri understood exactly what Anika must have been thinking. The two sisters had often fantasised about having that fairytale life where everything was perfect. A life where even the cheesiest of dialogues meant the world to them and that special someone would become the reason their heartbeats.
But Anika never believed in these things coming true for herself. She was the quiet nerdy student that nobody associated with. Of course, she was as beautiful as ever, but Anika always saw her peers as 'better' and 'superior' to her. Most probably because they were all from rich families and their parents were famous business tycoons.
This mindset never really allowed Anika to fully flourish as a person since she would constantly be worried about what society would say, you know the typical 'log kya kahenge' thing. Despite the unconditional love from her father, who never let them feel the absence of a mother's love, Gauri's elder sister took on the responsibility of helping her father run the house.
Unfortunately, these responsibilities only increased when they're dad had been diagnosed with a brain tumour. She was suddenly alone doing multiple jobs at once, as her father was too unwell and Gauri was still studying. Soon enough all of their money was going towards surgery for their father, but Anika never gave up even when her father refused to spend any more earnings on himself. By then, she had probably forgotten the meaning of a fairytale, never mind losing hope of it.
Seeing how Anika put aside her own dreams to help with the family made Gauri realise how lucky she was to have her as a sister. It became her first priority to help their father recover, and her second was to make sure Gauri fulfilled her dream. Anika never let her feel alone or unable to succeed, even living almost 8,000 miles away didn't let them drift away. This was she felt blessed that the two shared such a beautiful bond and loved each other more than words could describe.
And then Anika met Shivaay, the man who essentially pulled her out from under the water and allowed her to take a deep, breath of fresh air. Gauri noticed that Shivaay helped her come out of her grief, and also encouraged her to sometimes take things for herself. She was happier with him and more relaxed every time their eyes would meet. It seemed he was too, as when the beloved 'Shivika' finished their conversations, Gauri would catch Shivay walking away with a wide grin on his face. Sometimes it was a faint blush, making her just ship the couple more and more.
Letting Gauri leave for Paris and not telling Shivaay about it wouldn't go down so well for Anika, don't understand why she isn't getting that. As much as Gauri wanted to tell Shivaay for Anika's sake she, on the other hand, had somehow managed to emotionally blackmail her to keep her mouth shut. Shivaay would definitely be angry at her for hiding this, but knowing how much he cares for her too Gauri was sure that his anger would vanish in just a few minutes.
So as she was certain that her sister's happiness lies in the hands of Shivaay Singh Oberoi, and vice versa, Gauri was determined to push them that much further that they too realise what she saw. Yes, she was going away, but by hook or by crook, Gauri would make sure Shivaay becomes her Jiju.
After her small pep talk inside her head, Gauri realised she would have to snap out of her zone herself, as Anika was too busy thinking about you-know-who. She was about to call Anika back to Earth from her dreamland but soon decided to let her be lost, this way she was carefree.
Gauri: Pata nahi ki jaoun ya nahi. Anika Di ko acha nahi lagega agar main yaha rukhti, par agar main jaati toh voh akeli hogi
(I don't know whether I should go or not. Anika Di won't feel right if I stay, but she'll be alone if I go)
Stepping out of the room, Gauri noticed she was changing her mind about going or not. On one hand, Anika was more excited about Gauri' new opportunity than the girl herself. But leaving Anika alone, this time without their father, wouldn't allow her to set foot in another country.
This inner turmoil was too much for her to handle, so she shook it off and decided to experiment in the kitchen and practice her aloo puri making skills, for there were only a few days left for Anika's special day, her birthday.
