three.

It was 2:45 in the morning and sleep was just not on my side. I silently walk through the courtyard, knowing that people weren't usually out at this time. Everyone was usually asleep in bed at 10:00, especially Normals.

No one was out here but me, but I needed some fresh air. It was pitch black, but nothing could stop the stars from shining and the moon from appearing. I gaze up at them and smile. I wonder if anyone has been up there in awhile? Has anyone reached another planet other than earth, has the moon been touched since we touched it first?

I hop back onto my feet and continue walking farther until I reach a building. I open the door slowly. I don't know what I was thinking. Should I really be sneaking in the instruction hall? Normals definitely didn't do this. But I wasn't a Normal, I just wouldn't let anyone but Kirstie know.

I walk down the corridor when I see another figure walking. I could already identify him as a Different, I could see the black jump suit surround his body. He keeps his head down when passing me, and I do the same. I hear a loud thump and turn around, seeing the boy gripping his knee while laying on the ground.

I run over and crouch down next to him, placing a hand on his back. He winces and I remember that I wasn't supposed to touch anyone.

"Are you okay?" I ask, trying to figure out a way to help him without scaring him.

"What are you doing?" He asks, scooting away from me slightly.

"I was helping you."

"You're a Normal. Normals don't help Differents, let alone touch them." He says and looks down. This boy was the same blonde boy I had seen many times before. I could finally look at his face, admire the details in it. Even in the dark you could see the shine from his blue eyes. He quickly looks away.

"I'm sorry, you looked hurt." I say and stand up again. I instantly become afraid. Would he tell a silver that a Normal had helped him? Had even touched him? I could feel my body start to shake. The boy stands up and grips both of my shoulders.

"I won't tell anyone." He whispers. "I won't do to you what someone did to me." I nod.

"Thank you." I say back. Somehow, we both start walking back in direction I had come from, exiting out the doors again.

I don't know what was happening to me. I never thought I'd speak to a Different, especially after touching him. But he had touched me as well. It was strange feeling someone else's skin other than Kirstie's.

We sit on a bench together, not daring to touch each other once again.

"What are you doing up? Normals go to bed at 10:00." He says, pointing out the obvious.

"Do you really still think I'm a Normal?" I ask, knowing he knew otherwise. It was quite clear that I wasn't now. He shakes his head.

"No, but if you want people to still think you are one, then you shouldn't be here with me right now. You have to be more careful." He whispers.

"What's your name?" I ask.

"It doesn't matter. You aren't going to talk to me again after this. You can't." The blonde says, fixing his hair.

"But I want to."

"You are digging you own grave, kid. It's like you want to be marked as a Different. Do you?" I shake my head. Obviously I didn't, but this boy really caught my interest. I had never talked to a Different before other than Drake. I stayed away from them because I thought somehow they'd hurt me, like they were bad people.

But this boy wasn't a bad person at all. He was actually sweet and surprisingly understanding. I don't know why he'd want to help someone like me, a Normal that is.

"You should go back to bed. It's late and you wouldn't want to be caught." He says, keeping his head down. But I use my finger and lift his chin up.

"Why do you all always look down?" I ask, looking into his eyes.

"Avoid eye contact. It's personal choice, we don't like getting the nasty glares and stares from the Normals all day."

"You won't get that from me." I say. "But you still look down."

"I have my reasons." A confused look sprawls across my face. He looks down again. I sigh.

"I've seen you a lot." I say. He laughs slightly. "Like, at lunch and in the courtyard. You have the same lunch as the one I go to."

"You sixteen or seventeen?" He asks, still looking down but raising his head a little.

"I'm 16." He nods. "And you?"

"Eighteen." He says. I didn't know he was that old, he was two years from being an adult. Being able to touch someone, and love someone. I don't think Differents are allowed to love, though. They blew the chance when they were diagnosed.

"Why are you a Different?" I ask, looking at him. He shakes his head at me. "I was just wondering."

"Don't fall in love." He whispers. "Marry some girl that you don't love, but you can stand. Love kills people and always ends awfully."

"I didn't ask about love." I remind him and he nods.

"I know what you asked." He snaps. "Go back to your room and sleep. If you know what is best for you, don't talk to me anymore. I'll end up getting you caught." And with that, he gets up and walks away. I get one last glimpse of the  blonde before he quickly walks away.

I get up myself and slowly walk back to my home. When arriving, I look at the clock. It was already 3:30? I didn't know I was out there for 45 minutes.

I was tired, but figured I wouldn't get much sleep after the talk I had with a Different. A talk that no one would know about.
