Chapter 5: Pain & Change
Life is difficult sometimes, right? You have problems and questions, but no solutions and answers? Well, sometimes, you just have to hope for that ray of sun. For that light of hope in the darkness of life.
I just noticed that I never put where they live! I'll fix that sometime, but for now I'll just tell you: They live in northern Canada, kinda near Alaska. Another thing I'm not clear about is if there are humans, or if its just elements. There ARE humans, there are a few elemental towns scattered around the world in secluded places.
So yeah, I'll put those facts in somewhere sometime, when I do, I'll rid of this authors note.

My mom's words echoed in my mind.
What are you? What am I?
'You'll find out soon.' Frost said, clearly amused at how we were trying to find out what I am.
"That's so helpful," I grumbled out loud, and unfortunately, Aspen, with his advanced earth hearing, heard me.
"What?" Aspen took his head out of his hands and looked at me. "Who were you taking to?"
"Frost!" I snapped. "She knows what I am but she won't tell me!"
The rest of the little group looked at me with questions on their tongues and in their eyes. "So... you speak to Frost in your mind?" Raei asked curiously.
Then the stream of questions began, and Aldridge went second, "Your mind wall, its made of feathers and fur. Why is it like that?" He squinted in a thoughtful way.
"And what happens now? Does she leave with you two?" Mom gestured to Raei and Aldridge.
Lucy pipped in, "Does Moss get a dragon if she's not a recorded rare element?"
Raven nodded along with Lucy, then asked her own question, "And what about us?" She motioned to her, Lucy, and Aspen.
I groaned, I didn't know the answer to pretty much all of these questions. Frost? Help me.
'Will do, Mossado.'
What did you just call me?!
'Sorry, sorry, bad name! I'll stick to calling you Mossy.' I could almost see Frost grinning cheekily. Though I don't know what she'd look like. She said she is a snow leopard, but I keep imagining her as a pretty medium-height girl with light blue icy hair that was almost white and hazel eyes with light purple lilac and ice blue flecked in them.
I felt my mouth go numb and heard Frost speak out of my mouth, "Yes, I made it like that, yes, yeah I think so, you three will come with us if we have any say in it. Happy?" She growled her brief set of answers, and even though her voice is naturally growly, this bit sounded more growly than usual, a sign that me and her were both quite mad, frustrated, or annoyed. And that they should not get on our bad sides.
All eyes were on me now, wide and staring. The overwhelming feeling that had been growing inside me increased rapidly. Frost seemed to be pacing or running around in my head and was giving me a massive headache.
'It's coming.'
Wh-
Cutting me off, a pain coursed through my body, causing me to grab my head, where the pain centred. I screamed loudly, my eyes glazed over. I could barely see the others, just that everyone was panicking and saying my name, asking what was wrong.
I couldn't reply, but if I could I'd say that all the pain was unbearable and my bones felt like they were cracking over and over again.
It didn't help that Frost was yowling in my head, giving me a headache and forcing me to yowl out loud as well, a strange sound coming from a human.
I gasped, staring through the room, oblivious to everything except the vibrant forest outside, behind the house. All of my senses were on overload; they were higher than they had been at their highest points at school.
I could smell all the other people in this room, the water outside, the frozen chicken in the deep freeze, and so much more. My hearing was increased as well, and every word coming out of my friends mouths were like thunder. I squeezed my eyes closed, and yelled, "Get me outside, now!"
Everyone in the sitting room froze at the sound of my voice, then activated suddenly, rushing around, helping me get out the back door, or hesitantly hanging around me, worrying loudly. Still in pain, they helped me sit me down on a bench next to the house. I gasped again, the scents strong rancid of worry and fear surrounding Aldridge, Raei, Mom, Lucy, Raven, and Aspen.
Aldridge and Mom hurried back into the house after exchanging a few words. I could hear Mom whispering, demanding answers off the rare element, "Why is my daughter in pain like this?"
Aldridge caught on with the whispering thing and replied cluelessly, "I have no idea, no rare element has ever been in pain like this before because of their element."
"Do you know all of the rare options that she could possibly be?" Mom questioned throughly. I let out a high pitched scream of pain, and I could sense that she looked at the door, probably wanting to with me.
I heard a sigh, "Yes, me and Raei both went through many lessons on what all of the rare elements are. We know them all. This is not one."
"This is not one?" Mom echoed, processing what Aldridge was telling her. Her daughter, not a recorded rare element, nor a normal element.
I gripped the nearest person's arm, who turned out to be Raei, and said weakly, "T- Tell Mom and Aldridge t- to st- stop talking."
She nodded, looking quite confused. I heard her rush in a murmur my message to Mom and Aldridge, who came out trailed by Raei a moment later. "No noise," I gasped once again, in pain, telling them, and Frost, to be quiet as I suffered from whatever was happening to me.
They obeyed, now all quietly standing at a distance away from me, watching. Frost, however, did not obey me, and was still yowling her head off inside my mind.
The pain was getting more and unbearable the longer this went on, and soon, I ran into the forest. Something in me was wild, and it scared me a lot. I could hear my friends, the two rare elements, and Mom yelling at me to come back. Aldridge was even using what was probably his most powerful mind control attempt, and I'm pretty sure he also tried to read my mind, probing my mind wall, urging me to come back. But I didn't want to. I wanted to run, and run, and run until I dropped dead.
Somehow, my legs were working through the pain and I ran. Suddenly, the pain stopped. I didn't stop running though, I kept going. Until I noticed something that absolutely freaked me out.
*Aspen's POV*
When Moss ran into the forest, we all started to yell and her to come back. I tried to hear where she was going with my increased hearing, but even that couldn't detect where she was. I heard Raei telling Aldridge to hurry up and do his mind control thing before she ran too far away for even him to sense. I hope she was ok, all that pain was really unnatural and weird.
Something that really confused me was when Moss told Raei to get Anna and Aldridge to stop talking. I didn't notice they were talking. Frost must not have been joking when she said her and Moss's senses were better than advanced earth's. And considering even I couldn't hear it, her hearing was really, really good.
Maybe that's what was causing her pain, too much noise. But then, we were quiet and she was still in pain.
*Lucy's POV*
Aspen was staring off into the sky, completely involved in his thoughts probably. I decided to poke him to try and get him out of his thoughts. Almost immediately, he spun around to face me and relaxed when he saw me, "Hey, Lucy."
"What were you thinking about?" I asked softly. I tend to be quite quiet, and sometimes people didn't even notice me. Moss made me feel special at school, she noticed me, like a good friend.
After shifting his gaze back to the sky, he replied, "Just about why Moss was in so much pain."
"And?" Quiet and brief, that's me.
"And I got nothing. I thought at first it might be because of increased hearing, yeah?" Aspen explained, and I nodded along. "Because sometimes when you first get your element, when people talk to you its slightly painful and really loud. But then I thought, we weren't even talking and she was still in pain, right?"
"Yeah," I glanced up at the sky, and then did something I almost never do to anyone anymore. I hugged him. And he hugged me back.
*Raei's POV*
Now I really wonder what she is. Ever since we first met her, something's been off about her. Not in a bad way, just a weird way. I've never felt it before, but she feels powerful, wild, and uncontrollable. But at the same time, she carries around the aura of a leader.
And what makes her so dangerous, was what no one here but her mom really knows her, and that she doesn't know how powerful she really is.
*Raven's POV*
As I looked around, I saw Lucy and Aspen hugging, Anna voicing her worried thoughts to Aldridge, and Raei still looking into the forest, thinking.
She'll be long gone now, if she kept running, but what if she didn't? What if she was close enough to track and find? Deciding sooner was better than later, I walked towards the forest with the intention to find her.
*Moss's POV*
Until I noticed something that completely freaked me out. I just jumped over a fallen tree, and I landed on four white paws. Four white paws dotted with a few leopard spots crawling up my legs. Snow leopard.
I was a snow leopard.
'I'm free!' Frost sung.
And then I couldn't feel my body at all. Frost! What's going on! I yelled at her inside my head.
'Don't worry, I'm in control.'
In control of what? What am I?
'A snow leopard, duh, it's my natural form. Aren't I pretty?'
I found myself looking into a puddle and seeing a beautiful white snow leopard with black spots and long fur. I also noticed my eye colour changed from my hazel colour to a piercing ice blue colour flecked with light lilac purple. I couldn't help but stare. I felt Frost give control to me as she rested.
A rustling in the bushes broke my entrancing gaze with my eyes in the puddle. My cat instincts kicked in, and since I was upwind to whatever was in the bushes, I couldn't smell it. So I did the one thing I could, I jumped into a tree. A good seven feet I jumped. It felt so good, the wind in my fur, the freedom.
'It feels good, doesn't it?' Frost yawned sleepily, clearly tired. My thoughts were confirmed when she continued. 'I'm going to go to sleep, that shift was tiring.'
So that's what it's called, a shift? I got no response, and I assumed that she fell asleep.
Focusing my attention back on to what was rustling in the bushes, I crouched down, ready to spring at it as soon as it stepped out of the bushes. When it did, I didn't even check what it was, I just pounced, pinning it down.
I raked my gaze over it, to see if it was prey, but I was surprised to see a young human girl with black hair underneath me.
*Raven's POV*
After searching for about ten minutes or so, I started to give up, she was no where to be seen. Her tracks ended a while ago, and I didn't have help me. I wasn't going to stop looking though.
I walked through a bush slowly, annoyed that all the stray branches in that bush seemed to attack me and poke me, scratching me. When I finally made it to the other side, to my surprise, I was pounced on by a large white blur, and pinned down to the ground, cutting off my air. My eyes were wide in shock, I stared back into ice blue cat eyes flecked with light lilac purple.
Squeezing my eyes shut, I waited. But instead of the big cat finishing me off, I felt a weight lift off me, and I could breath again. Peaking out of squinted eyes, when I saw that there was nothing on me, I sucked in a deep breath of relief and sat up.
Once I was up, I faced the big cat that pinned me down. It was a snow leopard.

Ok, thank you for sticking with me through that long time as I was making this. I got a major writing block on this story, and I just couldn't write this for a good three weeks. Anyway, hope you like it!
