Chapter 3: Water & Strangers
A brown-haired girl bumped me, on purpose, as we all continued down the hall to the last of the element control and attempts classes, as she said excitedly, "Aren't you excited to try water?"
Her chocolate brown eyes came to mine, and I matched them with my hazel ones, "Not really, Lucy. It's not gonna be my element, so why bother?"
Lucy shrugged like she didn't care, but also didn't have a valid excuse to use to argue against me, "I dunno, fun, I guess?"
Raven interrupted, "I've heard some rare elements are the ability to control multiple elements at once! That would be cool!"
I smiled, teeth showing, then clarified, "So, we head straight to my house after school, or what?"
Lucy and Aspen nodded in acknowledgement, and Raven agreed with a small grunt. Frost chimed in through my mouth, "And I'll be there!"
I curled the corners of my mouth in amusement, and scolded out loud, "Don't speak so close to other people, Frost. And how can you not be there?"
"Our classes are here," Aspen gestured to the whole hallway, which had all four classes in it, as he addressed us. Four for the four different elements, I assumed.
Lucy went to the air one, Aspen to the earth, while me and Raven both stepped towards the water one.
As Raven and I entered, I felt all eyes, including the teacher's ocean blue ones, immediately find me. Right, to them, I was the girl who ran out of the cafeteria and passed out outside for seemly no reason. We worked our way to the crowd, where, right now, everyone was standing by little pools of water, and they would be no doubt attempting to move the water if I hadn't made my entrance with Raven.
The crowd's eyes followed us, well, me, as I walked across the floor. The mats on the floor, which were purposely made so that water couldn't seep through to the wooden planks underneath and rot them, seemed to trip me every few steps.
The teacher coughed, clearly trying to the students attention once more, "Well, we'll continue the lesson from where we began. Since these new students came late, they will stay in a few more minutes."
A few of the students gave little annoyed glances at us, some seemed indifferent, while others were staring at me with curiosity; most likely wondering why I passed out earlier.
We both nodded our heads, accepting the little 'punishment'. Just to make sure that Frost wouldn't say something out of my mouth, I thought to Frost, Hey, do NOT talk through my mouth in here, there's 20 other people in here. Unless you want to uncover us, and make everyone think I'm crazy.
'Hmm... Tempting, but no, I oblige, I won't speak.' Her voice echoed in my mind as she inclined to my wish.
With Frost's agreement that she wouldn't make a fool out of me, I felt slightly more relaxed as I positioned myself next to one of the empty pools, Raven settling down next to one close to me.
She sat, which some elemental users considered better for concentration, while I stood, partly because there was a lot of unknown people in the room, and Frost didn't like it very much, and partly because there was a weird sensation to the place. I couldn't place my finger on whether it was bad or good.
I started fiddling around with the water, closing my mind and imagining it surging upwards, floating around the room in a ball, and then dripping like rain back into my little pool of water. I opened my and eyes and nothing had happened, except everyone was staring at me weirdly. I shrugged it off, it was probably about the whole passing out situation.
Next, I closed my eyes again and pictured what it would be like if all the people's pools came up at once and connected into a big ball of floating water high on the ceiling. Then I imagined it circling the room, separating into little balls of water, then dropping back the pool it came from.
I sighed, as it did not seem to be happening. I opened my eyes and everyone was staring at me with ranged expressions, from shock to awe, and disbelief to looking slightly faint.
I looked around, wondering why they were all staring at me. It was much more than when I had first come in, they were all staring at me, even Raven. "What?" I hesitated before I spoke, the word coming out weird.
The teacher stepped up to me, "You... You..." Her eyes were wide with shock as she stammered that.
I started to look around the classroom for anything that might have caused this, and my eyes found a very suspicious looking stranger leaning on the doorway. He was the only one that wasn't staring, in fact he seemed proud. His dark orange eyes gleamed with something I could not tell, and his sandy hair barely peeked out of his dark hood.
I felt challenged.
An animalistic growl erupted out of my mouth, what surprised me that it didn't come from Frost, it came from me. I leapt across the room in one bound, an amazing feat, but what surprised me the most, was that he mirrored my image, also leaping across the room to meet me mid-jump.
The students in the class and the teacher moved out of the way of our little fight, shock written all over their faces at the sudden intrusion. Me and the stranger broke apart, and we circled each other in the little ring that the students had made around us.
Instead of attacking like I thought he would, he stood up taller and murmured something quietly, too quietly for even me to hear. Then, he said out loud to me, "I will see you again, Katherine. I promise you that." Then, he calmly walked over to the doorway, disappearing within the maze of halls.
Both me and Frost were way too agitated to be aware that a whole class was looking at me, because I, semi controlled by Frost, paced and growled like an animal. Raven was trying to get near me, but I snapped at her viciously.
The doors of the class burst open and the two people that I heard talking earlier during lunch, Reai and her partner, walked in and observed the scene. When their eyes settled on me, the man commanded, "Come here."
I didn't come. Instead, I snarled at them like an animal. The man made a slightly shocked and confused face. Two more people hurried through the door, and I looked up to see Aspen and Lucy looking around the room worriedly. They must have heard the ruckus from the other rooms and rushed over to check it out.
Their eyes settled on me, and then flickered to the other two people who were not supposed to be in this class. A look of confusion, then understanding, then more confusion came across both of their faces at different times, as they were both putting the pieces of this image together. I was pretty sure I helped them figure it out by growling at the man who had tried to command me.
Their eyes, and the rest of the class's, settled on the pair of group ups in the room as they walked slowly towards the teacher of the class; who happened to be right next to Raven.
I easily strode over to where they were headed, faster then them, and I took Raven's sleeve and pulled on it. I wanted her out of the strangers way. "Hey!" She yelped at I tugged once more. Then she realized that it was me and that I was trying to get her to our other friends, so she let herself get pulled across the room and put with Aspen and Lucy.
I locked eyes with Aspen first, and said, "Keep them safe."
He gasped as my eyes locked into his, then nodded shakily. Raven protested, "I can keep myself safe!"
Aspen leaned over towards Raven and whispered something in her ear, but I had already turned away and was facing the strangers. I stalked over to them and growled, "Who are you?"
"I am-" Reai started, while the man waited for his turn.
"I know your name," I cut her off. "I need his name." My eyes shifted to the man as I inspected him closely. Short, red-brown hair grew out of his head, and my eyes stared into his blue ones. He took a sharp intake of air at the sight of my eyes for some reason that I did not know. I figured I'd worry about that later.
"How do you know my name?" Reai asked, apparently missing her companion's surprise.
My eyes shifted back to her's and I stated, "You really ought to keep your voices down when you're talking about important things. Especially in the cafeteria, Reai."
"You are the girl who ran out of the cafeteria!" Reai exclaimed loudly.
"My name is not the girl who ran out of the cafeteria," I started circling the man, waiting for his name. I absently noticed that all the other students were being herded out of the class by the teacher, including Raven, Aspen, and Lucy.
"My name is Aldridge," The man named himself in a deep voice. "Your's?"
"Moss," I stopped circling and stood in front of him and Reai. My voice was slowly getting less growly as Frost retreated back into my mind. "What do you want?"
Reai took a deep breath, and blurted, "You're a rare element!"
Aldridge glared at her, "You supposed to break it to her softly!"
"Sorry!"
They turned back to me, clearly expecting me to react in someway. I didn't. I simply said, "So?"
"You're a rare element! Aren't you shocked? Or something?" Raei looked baffled as she spoke, while Aldridge just stood there, a slightly confused expression on his face.
Aldridge leaned over to Raei's ear, and whispered, "Maybe she's one of the ones who can predict the future. Or maybe we got here too late."
"I can not predict the future. I know I'm a rare element because..." I hesitated, wondering whether I should tell them about Frost or not.
'No, don't tell them about us.' Frost hissed inside my mind.
Why not? Maybe I should...
'No!'
What do you have against them?
'If you're not going to do it, I will!'
"Because someone told me!" Frost hissed through my mouth before I could think anything else.
The two adults were clearly startled by the sudden amount of hostility coming out of my mouth, and they backed away a couple steps.
"Ok," Reai reasoned. "How about we go over to your house and discuss this with your parents?"
"Parent," I corrected without my emotions showing, back in control of my voice. I decided that I'll scold Frost for doing that later.
"Oh, I'm so sorry," Reai's eyes were filled with sympathy and pity.
Aldridge echoed his companion in all ways; words, eyes, and tone.
"I never knew him," I stated stiffly. My father was not one of the things I wanted to talk about right now.
Hey, Frost, should I allow them to come over? Or should I talk to my mom first?
'They should be fine to come over, as long as if they make a single wrong step,' Frost growled viscously and a small growl that matched her's came out of my mouth as well, and I faintly noticed that Aldridge and Raei both book a small step backwards with a slightly confused expression on their faces. Frost finished, 'If they make a single wrong step, I get to shred them to bits.'
I smiled in amusement. I'm not sure how you'd do that, but ok I guess?
I came back to the present and agreed, "Ok, you can come over. On one condition though, my friends get to come over too."
"Why?" The two of them asked in a questioning way.
I growled at them, and they drew back in fear. "Because I want them to!" I spat aggressively. "And I'm not letting you come over and talk to my mother without them!"
"Ok, sure, fine, you win, they can come over as well, we're all good," Reai put her hands up in a surrendering way. "Let's go, then."
I led the way out of the room and down the hall, following the scent of Raven, Aspen, and Lucy. It led to the cafeteria, where all the people from water control and attempt class were sitting and talking to each other. Raven, Aspen, and Lucy were in a separate little group off to the side of the big group of students.
As we entered, the whole class went silent, and they looked at us. Clearly, they had not forgotten the whole ordeal with me acting like an animal, and the strangers.
The teacher walked up to us, I could tell by her step she was trying to be confident for her class. "Who are you?" Her voice was unwavering, but her eyes showed fear.
'Ha! She's afraid of us!' Frost chuckled in my mind.
That's not good, Frost! I rolled my eyes at Frost's behaviour.
Aldridge didn't move, but Reai tugged on my sleeve and gestured to my friends. They were all looking at me and Raei with clear interest. "Raei, what about the rest of the class? They are going to tell people about this..." I whispered as Aldridge started to talk to the teacher.
She simply raised a hand, silencing me, and whispered back, "Don't worry, Aldridge will take care of it."
How?
I felt Frost shrug in my mind as I voiced my thoughts, "How?"
"He's a mind control rare element. He can erase people's memories," Raei glanced at my friends and quickly continued. "You know when he said come here, and you got all animal on him?"
For some reason, Frost chuckled and murmured. 'You have no idea...'
What?
"Yeah, I remember," I replied out loud as I frowned at Frost not answering me.
Raei caught that frown and made a puzzled expression, but continued on without asking about it, "Well... he was trying to control you. Rare elements have this strange power that resists mind control, so we were trying to see if you were a rare element. We pretty much have a solid, unbreakable wall in our mind, so no one can get in."
'All me...'
I mentally shrugged at Frost's comment, shaking it off as a mistake or something.
"What about dragons and... uh... other creatures?" I asked curiously, trying to figure out a way to ask about why there was a snow leopard in my head and how she could get in, without telling them directly.
"Our dragons bond with us, so they become infused in our minds. What do you mean, other creatures?"
"Oh, nothing, nothing," I said a bit too hastily, and she looked at me suspiciously. I raced on with my questions. "You said we, and our. Are you a rare element? What rare element are you?Do you have a dragon? What's going to happen now that you know that I'm a rare element? And... who are you?"
(A/N: You have no idea how much I wanted to stop here... But, I didn't. Here ya go!)
Raei smiled fondly, "Yes, I'm a rare element. I'll tell you about my element later, though. And yes, I do have a dragon. Her name is Acid. I'll tell you more later, we should get a move on."
She started to move towards Raven, Aspen, and Lucy, and I rushed after her hurriedly. Once we got to where they were - next to the wall on the opposite side of the cafeteria - they immediately started hurling questions at us that followed the lines of, "Who is she? Are you ok? What happened? Who is he? The teacher rushed us out of the classroom so fast, we didn't get to really see what really happened! Who was that random stranger that jumped at you when you jumped at him? That leap you did was awesome!"
"Slow down, slow down," I smiled with amusement at my friend's childish behaviour. I glanced at Raei quickly. "I'll tell you everything later. Aldridge, that man over there, is a rare element, so he's gonna erase everyone's memories about the class and me."
They eyes widen in shock and awe as they looked at Aldridge, then Lucy asked worriedly, "He's not going to erase our memories too, right?"
Raei smiled, "No, I'll tell him not to. As long as you don't tell a soul. Even your parents."
Aspen and Raven nodded seriously, while Lucy agreed, "Sure, no telling."
"Hey, Aldridge!" Raei called across the room. "Here's Lucy, Raven, and Aspen! Don't do it to them!"
"Got it, Raei!" Aldridge hollered. "Won't do it to them."
"Who are these people?" Raven side-whispered to me, trying to make it so Raei didn't hear.
She did, of course. "I'm Raei, and that man, Aldridge is my partner," Raei smiled kindly at Raven. "We're from the rare element academy."

Whoo hoo! I finished the chapter! Yay!
Just to let you know, if you are wondering, if this is successful, then I will make a book 2, that's why on the cover it says 'Book 1'. And, if anyone wants to send covers in, I will happily accept them (not that I think I'm at that stage yet).
Welp, please, comment, and vote, and have a nice day/night!
Also, a little guide about the way people speak for those who are wondering:
"Quotations for people speaking out loud and no italics or bold."
'For Frost speaking, or possibly someone in the future speaking in her mind, italics with single quotations.'
Just italics for her thinking, or usually its speaking in her mind to her 'companions', AKA, her dragon (in the future) and Frost.
'For her future dragon speaking in her mind, its bold and italics with the single quotations. Yes, she gets a dragon...'
Word Count (without A/N): 2872
