Chapter 2: Senses & Frost

"Ok," I said while sitting down from getting my lunch with the money that Mom gave me. It was only $10, so I only got one sandwich and a bottle of water. "What's wrong with me?"

"Well, I don't think anything is wrong with you," Lucy started, her chocolate brown eyes focusing as she thought about my situation. "It could be that you're advanced earth."

Right, they get increased senses, I should have thought of that before. I nodded as I put my sandwich to my mouth, about to take a bite, when all the sudden, a terrible smell filled the room. "What is that smell?" I gagged, trying not to breathe in the horrendous smell.

"What smell?" Raven and Lucy asked in unison.

"You guys don't smell that?" I scrunched up my nose in a very feline-like way as I suffered from the stench. It was like someone was sticking peppermint flavoured toothpaste in front of a cat; the cat recoiled, and hurried away from the toothpaste as fast as possible. Though I hadn't done that yet.

"Nope," Raven narrowed her eyes, clearly thinking about what could be causing this supposed stench that only I could smell.

"No, I don't smell anything unusual," Lucy said slowly. "This could be another side effect to advanced earth. Though I've never heard of it being this bad."

Suddenly everything got much, much louder. "Ow!" I clutched my ears in a attempt to turn the sound off.

I could hear the conversations going on nearby, and far away, my ears zoned on one conversation particularly. It was a man and a woman, and I immediately assumed it was a pair of teachers having lunch. I assumed wrong.

"... looking for one, a girl, says she has a different e..." the woman said quietly, her voice overlapping with all the other voices I was hearing at once, which was muffling parts of the sentence.

Then I picked up another snippet of a sentence, this time from the man, "But, Reai, we don't know if she's the right one or not for all we kn..."

After I got my focus back on them, the woman, Reai, whisper yelled, "...must be! She's acting weird and I mean, look at her, she ma... what element do yo..."

I was disconnected from their conversation as Lucy shook me, jolting me and disturbing me from my eavesdropping. It was probably for the better anyway.

My friends were looking at me strangely, as if this was a joke I was pulling or something. Some of the other tables nearby were also looking at me like weirdly. Now that I was once again unfocused, the volume of all the sounds increased massively once more.

"I'm gonna get out of here!" I yelped, the smells and sounds overwhelming me more than before, pushing me to the point of insane.

I raced out of the cafeteria, feeling the eyes of probably about half the tables worth of people on my back, I could also tell that my friends were following me, and that they were worried. I don't know how I could sense that, and it freaked me out even more.

I screeched to a stop at a random hallway and sat down, my back facing the wall and my eyes squeezed shut with my hands over my ears to try and lower the sound. Now that I was farther away from the cafeteria, where all the noise was, it wasn't so bad.

My friends, Lucy and Raven, were running down the halls calling my name, over and over and over. I didn't reply. I was to shaken.

One voice, Raven's, got closer to my spot. She must have spotted me because she yelled, "Lucy! I found her!"

The loud sudden sound was unbearable so I whimpered, probably looking pretty pathetic. I could also hear Lucy getting closer, and when she got there, she cried out, "Moss!"

I flinched at the sound and recoiled away from her on instinct. What instinct, I did not know. I opened my eyes slightly and every thing was so clear, so I instantly widened them in shock. I had known that I needed glasses soon, my vision had been slowly but surely getting worse, but when I opened my eyes, it was... perfect. My vision was perfect. It was unnaturally sharp and clear.

Then, my gaze passed over Lucy. Her eyes were shocked for some reason I did not know, as she stared at my face. Raven looked the same, her non-earth element green eyes staring where my ears were. "I'm... I'm confused," I whispered quietly, but not quietly enough for them not to hear me.

Lucy slowly approached me, and I watched in panic, my eyes wide.

'What are you doing! Run!' A voice suddenly hissed inside my head.

Suddenly, I had the urge to run. It was so strong, I leapt up and tore across the smooth white floor, out of the hallway we were in and through the maze of halls, somehow reaching the doors to the outside without getting lost.

I burst through the doors to find the outside even more confusing. There wasn't any bad smells, or loud noises, but everything was so much more vibrant and... alive. Then, blackness.

-~-~-~-~-~-

I came to in the school's infirmary, as least thats what my smell told me. My friends and some other person were hovering above me, very worried, well, as least my friends were. I, of course, freaked out again, because the smells and sounds were still increased, not as much as before, but enough to scare me.

I flicked my eyes open, noted that everything was as clear and before, and jumped out of the bed, landed on my feet in a crouch. It shocked everyone in the room, since they all thought I was still unconscious.

"Ar-are you ok?" Lucy asked cautiously.

"No!" I snapped harshly, too harshly. I could see her flinch, hurt.

'You have to get away from all these people!' The same voice before hissed. 'It's not safe!'

"These are my friends! Of course it's safe!" I cried out, glancing around the room, partly looking for the source of the voice, and partly looking at my friends and the other person in the room. "They wouldn't hurt me!"

'What about the other one? Is that one safe?'

I looked at the other person in the room, and for the first time, I studied him, still in that crouching stance. He was that earth boy I ran into on my way to lunch earlier. "Well, I think he's safe... I bumped into him earlier and he didn't hurt me," I told the voice. I didn't trust this weird voice, but I didn't know what to do other than answer the questions coming from it.

As I looked at him, he looked back at me, his expression confused and something else I couldn't determine.

'Better be safe. Move over so you're crouching next to the door over there.' The voice told me. 'Then if anyone comes in, we can go out.'

"I don't think he's going to hurt me, though," I said to the voice, but I obeyed the voice's command anyway. My friends and the boy in the room started looking at me like I was crazy.

'Better safe than sorry, right?'

"I guess," I answered the voice.

"Moss?" Lucy started walking over to me cautiously. "Who are you talking to?"

I blinked, shocked, "They can't hear you?"

'Nope, i'm in your mind, Moss.'

"Your..." I said, trailing off into a quiet whisper that my friends couldn't hear. "Your in my mind?"

Apparently, it wasn't quiet enough for the earth boy to not hear me, as he asked, "There's someone in your mind?"

Now both Lucy and Raven were looking at both of us weirdly. "Yes, I am in her mind, what of it?" The voice said, not just to me, but through my mouth, using it's own voice. The voice sounded different than my voice. It sounded like a female, like me, but it was also hissing. Like a animal.

At that, everyone snapped their focus back to me, crouching on the ground next to the door with a weird voice in my mind. "So... you can speak through my mouth?" I asked the voice.

"Yep!" The voice chirped, through my mouth again.

This was getting weirder and weirder by the moment.

'Ok, first of all, I'll answer the a couple of the questions going through your mind.' The voice said. 'First of all, my name is not 'the voice', my name is Frost. And yes, you should also stop speaking to me out loud, it's making these three think your crazy.'

"How else am I supposed to speak to you?" I asked, glad that my friends were not speaking to me and speaking to each other. I could still here snippets of the conversation between them, and I'm sure if I wanted to I could hear their full conversation, but I didn't, and I was speaking to Frost.

"In your mind, dummy!" Frost said through me.

She did not just call me dummy! I thought.

'Yes! In fact, I did.'

"Wait, you heard that?"

'Yes, I did.' Frost sighed. 'I'm. In. Your. Mind. This is where your thoughts are. Your dragon will also be able to speak in your mind, like me, so you better get used to it. Also, I suggest telling your friends here about me, then tell them that they can't tell people about me. If ya don't, they'll get weirded out and tell on someone.' I could here her snort in contempt.

Ok, will do... WAIT! Did you say dragon?

'Yes, I did. You're a rare element, Mossy.'

I shakily stood up from my crouching pose and said, my voice wavering, "Ok. Let's do this. Throw questions at me." My friends and the earth boy snapped their gaze back to me.

"Ok," The earth boy said carefully, and quietly as if not to spook me. "First, let me introduce myself. I'm Aspen. I'm in ninth grade and I'm advanced earth."

"You are the one I ran into in the hall before lunch, right?"

"I think so," I replied.

"Yes. She is," Frost said through my mouth.

Can you please not say stuff through my voice without telling me? I asked Frost, annoyed she was speaking through me without telling me first. But, while I'm explaining here, can speak through me, to help me explain some stuff?

'Sure, no problem.'

Keyword, some.

Aspen and my friends looked startled at Frost's voice coming out of my again, and Lucy asked, "Who is that?"

"Her name is Frost."

"What is she? How is she is your mind?" Raven questioned. "And how is she speaking out of your mouth?"

"I am a snow leopard," Frost said, and everyone, including me, made a confused face. "I am her... let's call it... animal. I've been in her mind her whole life, I think. But I've been dormant, I was sleeping pretty much. And, well, since her element is coming out, I'm awake now. Well, now, I think I'm gonna take a nap."

Frost left me the last question to answer, and she seemed to disappear in my mind. I didn't notice until then, but there had been a presence in my mind, which I supposed was Frost. But it went away as she said she was going to take a nap. I rolled my eyes as I answered Raven's last question, "I don't know how she talks out of my mouth."

"What element are you?" Aspen asked.

"Uh, I don't know?" I shrugged my shoulders. "Frost just said I was a rare element."

My friends were all silent. Until Lucy said, "Well, Moss, uh, there something me and Raven need to tell you."

I looked at the two of them, curious about what they wanted me to know, "Ok, what?"

"It's pretty important, do you, uh, want us to, you know," Raven gestured at Aspen as she spoke. "Tell you alone?"

I glanced at Aspen as she gestured to him, a amused expression written on my face, "No, I trust him with whatever yo- oh!"

"What?" All three of them asked intently.

"The nurse is coming back," I rush towards the bed I woke up in. "Ok, tell her I just woke up a minute ago, and don't tell her about Frost or anything, ok? She should be here in a minute."

Aspen opened his mouth in, what I assumed it to be, shock and awe, "You... You can hear a person a minute away?"

"Is that not normal? I thought advanced earth could do that too?"

"They can, but not that good right away, and it takes years for them to do that!"

"How about we discuss this back at my house after school. Is that alright with everyone?" I suggested as I glanced around the room at them, questioning. "Frost should be awake by then as well, so she can answer questions too."

Everyone nodded as the door was opened from the outside, a nurse coming in, probably to inspect me. I don't like nurses and doctors.

-~-~-~-~-~-

It was after the nurse left, and I was given the good to go check, when I was finally allowed to get out of the infirmary and go back to classes. I was out for a good hour and half, then awake for about 40 minutes, so when me, Raven, Lucy, and Aspen all returned to class, it was 30 minutes into the 7th class period. Three quarters done already.

As we walked through the halls, Raven and Lucy seemed to be glancing at each other, and I knew that they wanted to talk to each other about the 'important thing' that they needed to tell me.

"So, what do you think my element is?" I asked my friends.

Lucy, Raven, and Aspen all stared at me with blank faces, and I sighed with frustration, "Right, no one really knows what the rare elements are."

"I wish Frost was back," Raven suddenly said. We all stared at her with confused expressions on our faces until she further explained. "Well, she might be able to tell us what Moss's element might be."

Then, out of my mouth, came Frost's voice. "I am back!" she practically sang.

Luckily, since it was class time right then, there was no one in the hall to look at me weirdly.

"Hey if they did, you can just say, rare element, and they'll go away!" Frost's voice came out of my mouth, answering my thoughts.

Uh, can you get out of my mouth, please?

'Sure!'

Back in control with my voice, I said to my staring friends, "Sorry, she seems to be in a good mood right now."

"Sure I am!" Frost said. Out of my mouth, again.

Taking control, I snapped, "Frost, stop talking through my mouth, what did I say about doing that?"

'Sorr-iee.'

Realizing how weird it must be to my friends, me standing there having a little 'battle' with Frost, I apologized, "Sorry about that, Frost isn't listen to me very well."

"I listen to no one!" Frost intruded once again.

Frost! This is getting really annoying! Stay out of my voice or whatever! Or I'll figure out a way to punish you.

My mind quickly raced through different ways to punish her, like keeping warm for a long time, she's a snow leopard, so she shouldn't like the warmth, right? Then again, I didn't ether, so that'd be like punishing both of us.

Either she got the hint, or she heard my thoughts about different ways to punish her, she muttered in my mind, 'Fine, fine.'

I sighed. "Hey, at least you can tell the difference between our voices," I laughed nervously.

Hey, there! Updates are going fast right now, so far, this is the second chapter on the second day of being published! I'm proud of myself... and all I did was practically lock myself in my room for the whole day! :D

What element to you think Moss is now?

What do you think Lucy and Raven were staring at in the hallway?

What do you think Lucy and Raven want to talk about? Does it maybe have something to do with what they were staring at?

Welp, I'll probably 'see' ya all sometime!

Also, a little guide about the way people speak for those who are wondering:

"Quotations for people speaking out loud and no italics or bold."

'For Frost speaking, or possibly someone in the future speaking in her mind, italics with single quotations.'

Just italics for her thinking, or usually its speaking in her mind to her 'companions', AKA, her dragon (in the future) and Frost.

'For her future dragon speaking in her mind, its bold with the single quotations. Yes, she gets a dragon...'

Word Count (Without A/N): 2643
