Chapter 1

I was famished. My stomach was craving for food for the last three days.

The bygone days went beautifully rogue. Fingers, organs, nails all were over. Now, just the face was left.

I took out a knife from my stinking short's pocket and pierced it gently at one corner of the eyelid. The eyeball popped along with some violet blood from the optical cavity below the eyebrows. This black colored blood, which now spattered all over my face, was supposed to be bright red some days ago.

My baby brother was a fit and healthy newborn until all this happened.

For in the wake of disease came famine and then war; a nuclear war which wiped out the whole of mankind. Death would've been a boon in this fate of time. Instead, something else happened. People didn't die, yet they didn't survive either. The streets went silent, wind outside started to get toxic as if the sun itself forgot to spread its golden sunshine.

Everyone survived the bomb, yet everyone died. People became living nightmares, the so-called creatures of the night. And very few, like us who managed to pull through this, remained confined within our houses, maybe forever, till we could.

I remained shut, inside my house with my brother while our parents could never return.

One step outside, and you'd be rest assured to be one among them.

This horrible confinement within four walls, for so long couldn't keep him alive.

My brother died due to starvation, twelve days ago. I didn't waste his body by burning it or burying it. Instead, I used it, because I had to survive.

The eyeball smelled like vomit. It was gross and disturbing to eat something or rather someone whom I once loved. But I found it delicious because I had to survive.

Three days ago I ate the gallbladder and everything else had finished. I kept the bones for my protection because they were afraid of it.

I had figured out that the creatures outside feared bones, though I couldn't kill one with it, because they were already long killed. Still, I kept the bones, because I had to survive.

There were hundreds of dead walking around outside, and I survived using a dead inside.

Quenching my thirst wasn't a big issue as I had plenty of water stored in the over-head tank, but this doesn't mean I didn't drink my own urine. I had to use opportunities to save freshwater too because that will also exhaust someday and above all, I had to survive.

Amidst all those howling voices from outside came a loud thud through the wooden floor underneath my foot.

I chewed fast and swallowed the eyeball inside my mouth, to put my ear on the floor.

All my house was locked, but the lesser I knew that the basement had already been invaded by this dystopian night.
