chapter seventeen
the documentary...
EJ and Dylan made their way back to the canteen and everyone got out of their costumes so they could celebrate with each other for finishing the show and documentary. Dylan was more than willing to get out of Elsa's dress costume because while it was very pretty, it was also uncomfortable. She had gotten changed back into her regular clothes, removed all the makeup on her face and took the extensions out of her hair and well as taking her hair out of it's braid.
She walked back into the barn onto the stage, hand-in-hand with EJ. The others followed them. Maddox was cleaning the fake snow on the floor and Miss Jenn and Big Red were there as well.
"So..." Ricky began.
"My babies." Miss Jenn said.
"Were we good?" Dylan asked, stepping right in front of her.
"No. You were incredible." Miss Jenn hugged Dylan tightly for a few moments.
"Wait." Corbin cut in, who had just walking in with Channing. "Jessica? From the first High School Musical movie?"
Dylan's eyes widened and she looked up at EJ. Miss Jenn had been so devastated that her line about the last apple was cut from the original movie, but Corbin had actually recognised her. He got her name wrong, but it was the thought that counted.
Corbin chuckled as he got a better look at Miss Jenn. "It is you. Jessica."
"Close enough." Miss Jenn replied.
Corbin hugged her for a moment before letting go. "You were our favourite extra."
"You were my favourite Corbin."
"Should we give you space, or..." Carlos offered.
"You know what?" Channing interjected, digging in his bag. "Hold on. Actually, I wanna put a microphone on this girl. This is really good."
Corbin turned to him. "Actually, Channing, why don't you take a long five, okay?" He pulled off his microphone and shoved into Channing's hand. "Get lost. It's done. We're done."
"We're done? Yeah, okay. Well, I always have the final say in the editing room."
Corbin and Channing did nothing but stare at each other before Channing turned around and exited the barn. Dylan was impressed, blinking in shock. Did that really just happen? Corbin apparently had enough of Channing too.
"What team?" Corbin asked.
"He's doing it." Gina voice excitedly.
"Wildcats." Ricky answered.
"What team?" Corbin repeated, louder this time.
"Wildcats." They all chorused.
"What team?"
"Wildcats!"
"Wildcats!"
"Get'cha head in the game!"
Corbin smiled at all of them. "That felt right."
"Last night of camp, huh, kids?" Miss Jenn questioned, walking up and sitting on the stage.
"So this is it, then?" Gina asked, slowly walking and sitting next to Miss Jenn.
"Define it." EJ stated, tugging on Dylan's hand so she stood closer to him once again.
"Just feels like something is over." Gina shrugged.
"Sometimes the really good stuff begins only when something else ends." Miss Jenn responded.
"Once in a lifetime means there's no second chance." Corbin started to sing. "So I believe that you and me should grab it while we can."
"Make it last forever, and never give it back." Miss Jenn recited, looking over at Corbin as he sat down next to her on the stage and the rest gathered around in a circle, either standing or sitting in chairs.
"It's our turn, and I'm loving where we're at."
Ricky then pulled him guitar up onto his lap and started to strum along. EJ squeezed Dylan's hand making the girl look up at him.
"Because this moment's really all we have." Ricky and Give recited together.
"Every day of our lives." Ricky sang solo.
"Wanna find you there, wanna hold on tight." Ashlyn added.
"Gonna run." Big Red said.
"While we're young and keep the faith." Maddox and Jet sang together.
"Every day." Carlos began.
Kourtney joined in with him. "From right now, gonna use our voices and scream out loud."
Dylan turned, holding her hand out to EJ. "Take my hand."
"Together we will celebrate." EJ stated.
"Celebrate." Miss Jenn recited.
"Oh, everyday." All of them sang.
It was camp tradition for the cast to sign the mural of the musical they had done on that wall. In the wings, there was a large snowflake that said Frozen on it. Dylan took her blue marker, and signed Dylan on it in beautiful cursive handwriting, putting a heart next to her name. She smiled at her signature for a moment before handing the blue marker to Maddox.
They all went out to the campfire, where there were supplies for s'mores. The air was quite chilly since it was night time and Dylan had pulled on EJ's letterman jacket. And much to everyone's delight, Corbin had put on his iconic t-shirt that said I majored in Vacation.
Dylan stood in between EJ and Ricky, roasting her marshmallow. She started to laugh as she saw Ricky feed EJ his marshmallow off his stick. Dylan looked around at everyone laughing and having a good time, her heart warming at the sight.
Dylan felt an arm wrap around the front of her chest, tucking her securely into them. She smiled and reached up, holding onto EJ's arm as he pressed a kiss to her cheek.
"I love you." EJ told her quietly over the chatter of everyone else.
"I love you too." Dylan looked up at him with nothing but adoration in her eyes.
They all got sparklers and once they were lit, they all separated into two rows while lifting their sparklers up into the air so they could walk down it. Dylan cheered for her friends as they walked underneath the sparklers.
Dylan walked through the makeshift aisle, her arms up in the air as she spun a few times. Her friends cheered for her, and Dylan was sure her heart had never soured so high before. And as she was finished spinning, her eyes caught on EJ's. Her smile was bright as the sparklers and she was wearing his jacket that looked better on her than it ever did on him, and she was everything, she was his everything. And in that moment, EJ swore he fell in love with her all over again.
Finally they were all just standing around each other when the festivities ended. Dylan was chatting with Ricky, Kourtney and Emmy casually.
"Uh, you guys?" EJ announced and Dylan looked over to see him staring at him phone in shock. "We're trending in Brazil."
Her eyes widened. So many people were watching them. Dylan still wasn't sure about this whole documentary thing but if they were trending in Brazil and Channing said that was a good thing that it had to been they had done something right.
"Oh dude. I forgot." Jet said walking up to Ricky. "You got an opening night card." He pulled an envelope out of his pocket. "Found it behind the couch."
"From Nini." Maddox voiced.
Ricky looked around at them all.
"Open it." Gina urged.
Rick opened up the envelope. And at Ricky's smile, Dylan knew what Nini had gotten him. They could always count on Nini.
"Yep, she remembered." Ricky stated with a chuckle. He pulled a lottery ticket out of the envelope. "She remembered the lottery ticket."
"You did it. Nini always comes through." Dylan told him with a small smile.
Ricky looked over at her, and with one look he knew that Nini wasn't coming back. And he knew that it was hitting Dylan harder than she was letting on. He stepped forward, wrapping his arms around her tightly. Dylan sunk into his embrace with a small sigh, staying there a moment before pulling away.
"I still want half if you win." She pointed to the lottery ticket making the boy laugh slightly.
"Anything for you D."
ONE MONTH LATER!
It was finally the day of the premiere for Frozen: The Musical: The Documentary (the name was kind of ridiculous, right?). The premiere was happening in Los Angeles, more specifically Hollywood, a place Dylan thought she'd never end up, but here she was.
Her hair had grown out so it was slightly longer once again, it was down and curled, now sitting at armpit length. She was wearing a floor length white dress that had gold sparkles and a mesh skirt, paired with a pair of silver heels.
She also had on her necklace. The Saturn charm hanging from her neck as the matching earrings were in her ear after she forced her stylist to match the silver jewellery to whatever outfit she was wearing.
To be completely honest, all the interviews and pictures that happened outside were kind of a blur. She answered all the questions that came her way. Dylan was way beyond nervous with all of the camera, but she got through it with lots of deep breaths and reassuring glanced from EJ.
They got moved inside, away from all of the press. Dylan sat in the second row next to EJ and Ashlyn, her fingers playing with the rings on her fingers.
"Hey, guys." Corbin began. "We're gonna keep this super casual, okay? Before we welcome all of the audience in for the premiere, we're gonna show you the first full-length trailer for your reactions. Just be you."
"Where's Channing?" Carlos questioned.
"Channing edited the doc, but we're now longer working together. Okay, here we go. Just your honest reactions. And for the record, I haven't even seen this."
All of them started to cheer. Dylan had an uneasy feeling considering Channing edited it but she cheered along nonetheless.
"Summer." Corbin's voice said and the screen showed Camp Shallow Lake. "Time to kick back, relax, and have fun right?" It then began to show all of them. "But when you take the first-ever student production of Frozen and add a bunch of kids to the mix, sparks fly."
"Gina is my sister." Kourtney said. "I mean, you know Gina." It showed Gina sitting on the steps of the barn rolling her eyes. "Gina, Gina, Gina." It went back to Kourtney. "She's fantastic, right?" Kourtney winked.
"I'm sorry, she said what?" Gina questioned. "You think you know someone."
Kourtney gasped.
"I didn't say—that wasn't about you, I swear." Gina insisted.
EJ then came onto the screen. "Honestly, you come to Shallow Lake on way, and you always change."
"I am looking forward to this summer, having the time of my life with the people i care about most." Dylan admitted with a smile.
"Hello, Val." EJ on the screen greeted as it showed EJ and Val walked together during Colour War.
"Yeah, I have a lot of questions about those two." Ricky revealed.
"I was talking about the characters in Frozen." Ricky protested. "I—I finally learned their names." He looked around helplessly. "You guys, Mr Bleu?"
Maddox came onto the screen. "There was a lot of new people this summer." It cut to Maddox looking at Ashlyn during Colour War, longingly. "Some more memorable than overs."
"I have never been to summer camp and I'm opening to anything happening." Ashlyn stated, and it went back to the scene of Maddox and Ashlyn.
EJ chuckled. "Yeah, that's gonna be a thing."
"Oh, God." Ashlyn commented. "We shouldn't not have signed that release."
"Oh, I—I've got a boyfriend back home, and I can't wait to see him again." Carlos voiced. There were then scenes of Carlos and Crash, one of the guys in his cabin, whispering on the bench and walking out of the cabin together. "Honestly, I didn't come here to make friends."
"They cut off the second part." Carlos argued. "I said I didn't come here to make friends, I came to be a star."
"Yeah, dude, that's actually not much better." Ricky told him.
"I'm in love with the girl playing Elsa's understudy and it's eating me alive." Jet admitted.
Dylan tried to stifle her laugh but failed miserably. Oh. My. God. Maddox, however, didn't even try to control anything. She just laughed loudly.
"This summer is gonna get hot." Kourtney said.
Dylan then appeared on the screen once again, smiling softy. "I lied, I'm really just looking forward to spending all summer with my boyfriend."
It showed a quick montage of her and EJ that had been caught on camera. However, it suddenly switched to black and white and showed when Dylan had walked away from EJ jokingly at Colour War, editing it so it looked as if she was walking towards Ricky and it then became a montage of her and Ricky had been captured on camera together, including their chat outside after Love is on Open Door. It finished with a shot of EJ watching from afar, his jaw clenched and arms crossed as Gina stood next to him.
"I was talking about EJ." Dylan stated. "Why would ever be talking about Ricky?"
Gina then came on the screen. "Her?" Dylan came back on the screen, laughing with Kourtney. "Oh, yeah, she's got to go."
"I did not say that about you." Gina insisted in a panic. "Well, I mean—I—" The girl let out an awkward laugh.
Gina stayed on screen. "I have my eyes set on one thing this summer and one thing only." It showed Ricky, who grinned, before it went back to Gina. "And I'm gonna get it." She flipped her hair. "Don't get me started."
Big Red appeared on the screen. "I'm Big Red, I'm Ashlyn's boyfriend and I'm bi."
They were all stuck in tense silence for a moment.
Dylan furrowed her eyebrows, not even phased by what he said. "How did he even get in it?"
Ricky glanced back at Ashlyn, who nodded. "Good for him."
"Is everyone okay?" Corbin asked.
"I'm calling Seb." Carlos stated.
"I'm calling Big Red." Ashlyn agreed.
Kourtney stood up too. "I'm calling my agent."
"Wait, you have an agent?" Gina questioned.
"That's your number one question after seeing that." EJ replied.
"Yeah, okay, I think we're just gonna like..." Maddox trailed off.
Jet stood up. "Yeah.
"Yeah."
"D, I'm sorry." Gina stood up and walked over to her. "I was angry and jealous of your friendship with Ricky and—"
"G, it's okay." Dylan smiled softly. "You told me you were gonna take over Nini's responsibilities and I took that to heart. I shouldn't have. I already have a Nini, I don't need another one. I need a Gina."
"I need a Dylan." Gina stated.
"Then we're okay." Dylan nodded.
"Good." Gina smiled, hugging the girl tightly.
Dylan took a step back. "Get the guy, G." She then left Gina and Ricky on the stage, following after EJ. "Hey, Eej."
"Hey D." EJ turned to her with a smile. "You okay?"
"Yeah, you?" Dylan stopped in front of the boy.
"Yeah."
"I can't believe your going to St. Louis." Dylan stated.
"I'm gonna miss you." EJ pouted.
"We're gonna see each other all the time." Dylan told him. "Because I love you. We're gonna be okay."
"My heart is wherever you are." EJ recited.
"We're perfect harmony too." Dylan stated, leaning in to press a kiss to his lips.
"I'm yours, Dyl, forever and always." EJ told her. "And for that reason, you're right, we're gonna be okay. We're gonna be just fine."
"And I'm yours, forever and always." Dylan smiled at him.
"What did I do to ever deserve you?"
"I ask myself that every day." Dylan joked, shaking her head slightly with a small laugh.
"Shut up." EJ shook his head.
He then leant forwards and pressed his lips onto hers. Dylan melted into it, reaching forward and fisting his jacket in her hands. It felt so natural, so... right. Dylan could not picture herself with anyone other than EJ.
Dylan agreed with what EJ had said. She was his, forever and always. He was her everything. And as they kissed...
God, she hoped it never changed.
