chapter fourteen
camp prom!

Dylan had gotten up bright and early the next morning, willingly for once. It was the day of Camp Prom and she was ever so excited. She had kept her promise to EJ and painted her nails a light pink colour despite knowing she wasn't going to wear any other pink clothing so she matched her boyfriend just a tad.

She was now sat outside the Honeycomb cabin, her phone leant against her foot as she phoned Eve, very thankful for the competition that allowed her to win her phone back. Dylan smiled as the woman answered, her popping up on the screen with a tan and a cocktail in her hand already.

"Are you drinking before 11am?" Dylan asked.

"Wow, no, hi, how are you? Straight into the judging." Eve retorted, the smile on her face suggesting that she was only teasing her step-daughter.

"Early bird gets the worm." Her father's voice came from off camera making Dylan laugh.

"I take it you're enjoying yourselves then?" Dylan commented.

"Yes." Eve nodded. "Are you?"

"Surprisingly, yes." Dylan told them. "Ups and downs though."

"What's going on?" Eve wondered.

"Just stuff with Gina. It's nothing." Dylan waved them off. "It is Camp Prom tonight and then the show is tomorrow."

"Dylan, you are going to kill Elsa. I know it." Eve reassured her.

"You are a living Elsa, Dyl. You'll be great." Sebastian added.

"Thanks guys." Dylan smiled. "I just... I don't know. What if... what if I'm not Elsa? Like she found herself and I have no idea who I am or where I'm going."

"That's the point, Dyl." Eve told her. "She finds herself throughout the movie, let it go is about moving on from her past and being free to do whatever she wanted."

"What if I don't want to move on yet?" Dylan wondered.

"Everyone has to move on eventually, sweetheart." Seb stated. "It's life. And let it go isn't just about moving on, it's about embracing her insecurities and realising she doesn't have to be perfect to be herself and be loved."

"You're right." Dylan nodded.

"I always am." Seb commented.

"Hey, Dyl!" Ashlyn's voiced called. Dylan looked up to see her standing in the doorway of the Honeycomb. "We have a dance to get ready for, and Kourtney's curling iron is heating up."

"Coming Ash." Dylan told her before looking back at her phone. "Duty calls. I miss you, see you soon."

"Love you."

"See you soon."

Dylan waved goodbye, hanging up her phone, walking back into the Yurt.

Her and the others girls had started to get ready in the cabin together. Kourtney curled Dylan's hair slightly, giving her an extra wave. They had then all taken turned having their makeup done by Kourtney – Maddox included. Dylan's was finished, her makeup consisting of orange eyeliner that had been smudged out with orange eye shadow under her eyes, mascara, blush and a pink lip gloss. She sat on her bed in her pyjamas, just waiting now until she would have to put her outfit on, watching as Kourtney did Gina's makeup.

"Okay, I am very helpful for this dance tonight, but someone needs to explain to me why we're doing a vintage theme for Camp prom." Ashlyn stated, curlers in her hair.

"Ooh, I think it has to do with Susan Fine's birthday." Gina said. "Or the day she died."

Ashlyn squinted at her. "Definitely one of those."

"Honestly, I've never known." Maddox admitted.

"Look, any camp tradition that doesn't involved climbing a wall is good by me." Kourtney voiced, applying lip gloss to Gina's lips.

Gina sighed. "You know, I'm really gonna miss this. Spending time with you guys. Okay, sisterhood vibes all night, okay?"

"It's gonna be a night of many vibes." Ashlyn replied. She checked her curlers in the mirror for a moment. "Hey, D, are you good going solo to the dance tonight?"

"I'm not going solo. I'll have you guys there." Dylan told her. "Plus, EJ's gonna be there too, just as my unofficial date."

"Yeah, we're the real once going solo." Gina gestured between them all. "Shallow Lake tradition."

Maddox stood up. "That's right it is."

"Everyone goes stag." Gina stated.

"EJ promised me the last dance so—"

"Tonight is gonna end with a bang." Gina cut Dylan off.

"In one way or another, it always does."

The door then opened, followed by the sound of rapping knuckles on the lockers by the door. Dylan looked over to see Jet walking in, totally decked out in seventies attire.

"Excuse me." Jet began, pausing for a moment to let them all make noises of shock at his outfit. "Uh, Maddie, can we talk? Alone?"

They all left the cabin, Dylan stood up from her bed to do so. Ashlyn, Dylan, Gina and Kourtney all stayed closed to the cabin, trying to listen into their conversation. Dylan would do anything for gossip.

"Okay, should we be spying on them?" Kourtney questioned.

"No, we should no." Gina answered.

"Can you keep it down?" Ashlyn whispered. "I'm trying to spuy."

"Hi." A new voice began. All of them instantly turned around, trying to act as casual as possible. Standing there was a girl with blonde hair, wearing a very sparkly suit. "Is, uh, Gadget still in there?"

Dylan nodded, despite her confusion, and pointed to the cabin. "Yeah."

The girl walked into the cabin. All of them decided that it probably wasn't the best idea to spy on them anymore, especially when Jet left the cabin and noticed them all standing there.

Dylan walked around camp, bumping into Ricky as she did. "Hey."

"Hi." The boy look nauseated.

"What is wrong?" Dylan asked him.

"I ate three pizzas." Ricky told her.

"Gross." Dylan commented. "You also didn't ask Gina out."

"Everyone's supposed to go stag." Ricky stated.

"Things like that haven't stopped you before." Dylan tilted her head.

"I chickened out."

"No." Dylan gaped sarcastically. "You're hopeless. And I have to finish getting ready."

With a shake of her head, Dylan made her way back inside Honeycomb to finish getting ready. Dylan now stood in front of the mirror by the sinks, wearing a white cropped halter neck shirt that was decorated with yellow and orange flowers, a matching mini-skirt and a pair of white block-heeled boots. A white headband was placed upon her head.

She had her Saturn necklace around her neck, and her hands were littered with different rings she had accumulated.

Once they had all finished getting ready, they headed to the barn when it was dark. On the outside was an orange buggy car decorated in flowers and a sign that said Flower Power covered the usual barn sign. Dylan and Gina walked in first, trailed by Kourtney and Ashlyn. She glanced up at the bright decorations, smiling slightly at it.

You know that romcom scene that Dylan was talking about yesterday. The one where the girl gets invited to prom by the popular boy and she walks down the stairs to Kiss Me in slow motion as the boy stares at her in utter shock.

EJ felt like he was in that scene when his girlfriend walked through the door.

EJ felt himself freeze the second her saw her, his eyes widened comically. His eyes scanned over her outfit, which highlighted all of her best features – which was, to him, everything. The necklace he had given her stuck out against her tan skin, her brown eyes emphasised by the bright colours of her makeup and her smile...

God, it could light up the whole town.

EJ was head over heels for the girl he had been dated for only a few months.

"You two okay?" Carlos asked, patting a choking Ricky's back and glancing at a frozen EJ.

Ricky nodded, clearing his throat to stop choking from the sight of Gina.

EJ swallowed. "I am madly in love with Dylan."

Neither boy had any time to respond to EJ's confession when Gina, Dylan, Kourtney and Ashlyn stopped. They turned to see EJ, Ricky and Carlos, standing by a table. Carlos' jaw was completely dropped, loving their outfits and makeup. EJ had his eyes trained on Dylan and Ricky was looking at Gina.

"Hello, boys." Gina greeted. Ricky didn't respond, simply clearing his throat. "You okay?"

"Yeah, you good?" EJ asked him.

"Yeah. It's just polyester. Am I right?" Ricky nodded.

"Are you okay, Eej?" Dylan asked. The boy freezing when he looked over at her. "You seem... tongue-tied."

"I'm good." EJ nodded.

Kourtney suddenly squealed. "Ooh! The photo wall is lit."

Ashlyn rushed up to Gina and Dylan. "Oh, we're stealing them. Come on."

"I'll be there in a sec." Dylan promised.

The girls rushed off. Dylan looked back at EJ. She moved to stand next to him, pulling him slightly away from the other two boys. She rested a hand on his shoulder, pressing up on her toes and placing a kiss onto his cheek.

"You look very handsome." Dylan told him.

"Thank you. You're beautiful." EJ blurted out. His face turned a light shade of pink. "I—I mean... yeah, you're like the most gorgeous person here."

"Thanks." Dylan smiled with a soft laugh. "I have go, I can feel Ash staring at me."

"I'll see you later."

"Definitely."

She then walked up to the photo wall, practically being dragged into frame by Ashlyn. Dylan smiled and laughed as she took many, many pictures with her friends, deciding to simply live in the moment. After a while, she left the photos to the other girls, deciding to find her boyfriend.

However, as she was making her way through the crowd, she saw a very familiar head of blonde hair coming through the door, wearing an outfit that looked like a grandad would wear it. Seb Matthew-Smith's eyes instantly found hers, and he ginned, its usual sunshine nature brightening up the room.

"Sebbie!" Dylan exclaimed, rushing over and wrapping him in a hug. "Oh my god, I've missed you."

"I missed you too, Dyl." Seb responded. "And I don't mean to blow you off like this but—"

"Carlos is over there." Dylan glanced over to where Carlos and Ashlyn were having a conversation. "You go find your boyfriend."

Seb gave her a bright smile before wandering to their little group. Dylan couldn't help but smile at Seb's contagious energy as well.

She glanced around the room for a moment, only to see EJ wandering around the room before stopping in front of Ricky, who was laying on one of the props for the prom. Dylan walked over, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

"What is this?" EJ asked, pointing to Ricky.

"I'm trying to figure out how to be a superhero, okay?" Ricky admitted. "I need to finish my bucket list by tomorrow. Only got two to go."

Ricky then started to place his hands on his hips like Superman would. Dylan shook her head with a laugh, turning to EJ. "Hey, can I have this dance?"

EJ smiled at her. "I will, after your answer a prompt."

"Okay." Dylan nodded as Gina approached them.

"Elsa, when Anna says..." EJ flipped through his binder. "But why? I don't understand, you say..."

"Uh... I know this..." Dylan replied. "Uh..."

Dylan was freaking out. Why couldn't she remember it?

"Curtain's up, cameras are rolling." EJ urged.

"Yeah, I know, you're stressing me." Dylan snapped.

"Dyl?"

"Remember this scene?" Gina asked.

"You got this, D." Kourtney reassured her softly.

Dylan struggled, shaking her head. "I'm blank."

EJ shut his binder. "You've still got 24 hours."

"And counting." Dylan commented. "Can we dance now?"

"I think Maddox is taking the stage." EJ stated. The two turned, making their way into the crowd with Kourtney and Gina trailing behind.

"Hey, gang." Maddox began.

"We love you, Gadget!" A boy exclaimed.

"Thank you. Uh, just a... just wanna make an announcement. Actually, it's not an announcement, it's, uh, an explanation." Maddox started. "I push people away. Good people who screwed up like I probably screw up, basically every day. So I thought I might sing something tonight."

"Shallow Lake song!" A girl shouted.

"Actually, I had another idea. It's a song that used to be my favourite when I was little. It made me happy, and it made my little brother happy, and I think maybe we're ready to be happy again."

"Maddie, I—" Jet started to say.

"And I know we've had a hundred ups and downs since then, but, Jet, I wouldn't change a thing."

Dylan's eyes widened and she grinned. Maddox was about to sing one of her favourite Disney Channel songs. She looked over at EJ. Dylan thought wouldn't change a thing related to her and EJ's relationship better than any other song. They hated each other at first, are complete opposites and always had their ups and downs but they wouldn't change a thing if they ended the way there were today.

Music then started to play. It was evidently a more upbeat remix of the song to match the vibe of the dance, but it worked. Dylan began to nod her head to the beat.

"Ooh." Maddox sang.

"Whoa." Jet added.

"Yeah. It's like he doesn't hear a word I say, his mind is somewhere far away and I don't know how to get there. It's like."

"She's way too serious."

"All he wants is to chill out."

"She's always in a rush."

"Makes me want to pull all my."

"And interrupting."

"Hair out."

"Like she doesn't even care." Jet voiced at the same time Maddox sang. "Like he doesn't even care."

Maddox pointed at Jet. "You."

"Me." Jet continued.

"We're face to face."

"But we don't see eye to eye." The two chorused, and everyone started to dance.

"We're like fire and rain." Maddox stated.

"Like fire and rain."

"You can drive me insane."

"Drive me insane."

"But I can't stay mad at you for anything." They duetted.

Maddox turned back to Jet. "We're venus and mars."

Jet moved past her. "We're venus and mars."

"We're like different stars."

"Like different stars."

"But you're the harmony to every song I sing." They sang together. "And I wouldn't change a thing."

Ricky then went to the front of the crowd and signalled them to stand on two sides so there was a row down the middle. While Jet and Maddox still sang, Ricky and Ashlyn were the first ones to dance down the rows. Dylan cheered and clapped for them as they went. More and more people went, mostly in pairs, except for Gina who went by herself.

Dylan grabbed EJ's arm, she was not letting him get out of this. She linked her arms through his and practically dragged him out to the aisle. EJ laughed softly at his girlfriend antics. He unlinked their arms and held his hand out to the girl. Dylan smiled, grabbing her hand and allowing him to guide her down the aisle, the two dancing, hand in hand.

As Carlos and Seb started to sing together with Jet, the rows dispersed and everybody wanted to dance with each other as a whole. Dylan let go off EJ for just a moment, rushing over to a dancing Ricky.

"Go dance with Gina!" She shouted.

"What?"

"It's the easiest way to get close to someone. I realised I like EJ at Carlos' quinceañero." Dylan encouraged him. She pushed Ricky in Gina's direction before making her way back over to EJ.

Dylan extended her hands out to EJ as they got closer to each other once again. He took them with a smile, instantly spinning her around. Dylan laughed softly. EJ then let go off her hands, taking a step back before doing the disco move, moving his finger from pointing at his hip to pointing in the air. Dylan burst out into loud laughter, grabbing his hands and twirling them around onto the dance floor.

Dylan looked up at EJ as she song the final lyrics of the song. "I wouldn't change a thing."

EJ looked down at her with a small smile on his face. "I love you."

The song then ended, Dylan freezing at EJ's words. She then turned to the stage, cheering and clapping for the song along with everyone else before stepping away from EJ and over to Ash and Kourtney.

"Everyone, everyone." Maddox announced, pulling the blonde girl in the sparkly suit from earlier over. "This is Madison of Mad and Mad fame."

Dylan's eyes widened in understanding. So this was the girl Maddox had mentioned, the one that had texts with Maddox that Jet showed their parents.

"What's up, Wildcats?" Madison greeted.

"We have heard so much about you." Ashlyn revealed.

Madison looked at Maddox. "Hey, I have a long drive home."

"I know." Maddox nodded.

"You'll call when camp's over?"

"Like I could forget your number."

"Excuse me." Dylan stated, glancing at EJ before rushing off and outside the barn. She could feel her heart beating faster and faster. It was like she couldn't breathe, EJ loved her. He had to be messing with her, there was no way in the world that EJ Caswell loved her.

It had to be a joke.

"Hey, hey, hey, D." The girl spun to see Ricky approaching her. "Are you—Are you okay?"

Dylan nodded but her sudden gasp for air suggested otherwise. Ricky placed a hand on her shoulder. "Hey, hey, you need to breath. Um... what do I do? What would Nini do?"

He thought for a few moments as Dylan tried to regulate her breathing. "Oh, um, do you remember when we were kids, and every time I would come to yours you made me sing a song to get through the front door. It was so original because every one had some sort of password that you had to guess but you didn't. All we had to do was sing at your house. I thought you were the coolest person ever."

"I'm not cool." Dylan shook her head, her breathing slowing. "Not anymore."

"You still are. You're the coolest person in the world." Ricky told her.

Dylan surged forward, wrapping the boy in a hug, holding him close and basking in the comfort of him, unaware of EJ's eyes on them.

Dylan walked back to Honeycomb cabin. She entered the cabin, only to see that the other girls were in there as well. Ashlyn was sitting next to Kourtney on Dylan's bunk while Maddox and Gina stood by their shared bunk.

"Hey." Dylan said quietly to them all.

"Hey." Maddox asked her, noticing her sad demeanour. "Are you okay?"

"EJ told me he loved me." Dylan revealed. They all sent her shocked looks, slightly confused on her saddened expression.

"Is that a bad thing?" Gina asked.

"No. It's a me thing, don't worry." Dylan shook her head, moving to sit in between Kourtney and Ashlyn.

"I guess tonight did end with a bang." Ashlyn stated.

"Well, as long as it ends soon." Kourtney voiced. "I mean, who knows? Maybe I can wake up as someone else."

"Mood." Dylan agreed. She played with the second necklace on her neck, her lip trembling.

"Woah, hey, hey." Kourtney spoke up, looking over at Dylan who had begun to cry, her head in her hands.

"I'm sorry." Dylan shook her head. "It's so stupid."

"No it isn't." Ashlyn stated firmly. "What's wrong?"

"EJ loves me." Dylan repeated. "I've never—no one has ever—It's like my mother is still ruling my life. She taught me from such a young age, that I was unlovable. To her, to anyone else in my life. A-And I have people who love me now, you guys, my dad and Eve but EJ's love is different and what if I don't deserve it. What if I am unlovable and I h-hurt him?"

"No, Dyl." Gina stepped forward, crouching in front of her. "You won't hurt him, you are the best person we know."

"I'm not." Dylan shook her head. "I'm mean, I'm sarcastic, I don't think before I speak and—"

"You're the sweetest person ever." Kourtney cut her off. "You help me every day, you give me confidence and make me feel seen."

"You made me feel welcome when no one else did." Maddox added.

"You were the first friend I made at East High, and I remember thinking, you could be the only friend I ever needed." Gina told her. "You are the reason I'm still here."

"You give the best advice I have ever heard and love us all the way we are." Ashlyn stated.

"We love you for all of those things." Gina stated. "And EJ loves you for so much more. You won't hurt him for all of those reasons because we all have flaws Dyl, yours don't define you as much as you think."

"I love you guys." Dylan smiled.

"Now can we sleep." Kourtney announced making Dylan nod.

Ashlyn stood up, "Hey Kourt, can I borrow your prayer?" Kourtney nodded, and Ashlyn started to sing. "You're not alone."

"You're not alone." Gina and Ashlyn sang together, Gina stepping up next to Ashlyn.

Dylan nudged Kourtney with her elbow as her and Maddox joined in. "You're not alone."

Kourtney then stood up, and all of them surrounded her. Dylan stood up as well.

"You're not alone." All of them recited. "You're not alone."

There was only one way for Kourtney to conquer her anxiety and take the challenge. She had to climb the wall.

All of the girls left the Honeycomb cabin, heading over to the climbing wall that they had used in Colour War. Kourtney put on the harness and the helmet before Maddox attached her to the rope. She stared up at the wall before deciding to go for it. Kourtney started to climb.

Dylan walked in pride as Kourtney climbed to the top of the rock. Ashlyn wrapped an arm around Dylan's shoulder and pulled her in closer. Dylan leaned her head against Ashlyn's and nestled comfortably into her side.

Dylan glanced over at Gina, debating herself for a moment. She had been mad at Gina, her actions hurting Dylan more than she knew but Dylan had to let go of the past and move on. She extended her arm out to Gina, giving her a small smile. Gina stared at her before wrapping her arm around the girl.

Kourtney finally reached the top. All of them cheered loudly for her under the stars.

"Hey, Gadget?" Ashlyn asked, putting an arm around Maddox. "You know, you're one of us now, right?"

Once Kourtney got down, her, Maddox, Gina and Ashlyn all decided to go back to the Honeycomb. However, Dylan knew she had to talk to EJ. She wandered around camp for a little while but she couldn't seem to find him. The girl then found him talking to Maddox.

"Dylan, you can help too." Maddox called her over.

"Is everything okay?" Dylan asked.

"Did you have fun with Madison?" EJ wondered.

"Yeah, that... that's, uh, that's a little complicated." Maddox stuttered out. "Like, I thought it was over, but then she said maybe she still likes me and to please call when I get home."

"I guess none of the new girls caught your eye this summer." EJ commented.

"What's up, hippies?" Ashlyn suddenly called, walking past them, holding two peace signs up in the air. Dylan and EJ shared a look as they watched Maddox stare at Ashlyn for a moment too long, the girl bouncing on her feet.

"I'm sorry what?" Maddox turned back to the two.

"You were looking for me."

"Yeah." Maddox nodded. "Did you hear from Val?"

"No. Why?" EJ asked.

"She got a top that Channing is gonna go full reality-show tomorrow. Like he wants to try and stir up all kinds of trouble. And it could mean that opening night will be a train wreck." Maddox explained.

"Well, what are we gonna do?" Dylan asked.

"Buckle up." Maddox let out a small chuckle before walking off.

EJ and Dylan shared a look, their eyes widening at Maddox's words. Dylan then turned to EJ.

"I'm sorry for running off earlier." Dylan began speaking, EJ turning to her. "I didn't mean to leave you high and dry."

"It's okay." EJ smiled softly. "I'm sorry for saying what I said."

"Why are you sorry?"

"It either scared you or you don't feel the same so..." EJ trailed off.

"Did you mean it?" Dylan asked.

"Of course." EJ nodded. "You're the best person I've ever met, the most beautiful and incredible and—"

Dylan smiled, leaning up on her toes and bringing the boy close to her. "I love you too."

"You do?"

"More than I have loved anything else in this world." Dylan told him. "More than you can ever comprehend. I was scared earlier, but I'm not anymore. I love you, Elton John Caswell."

"I love you too, Dylan Sofia Julietta Valdez." EJ replied.

Dylan glanced down, beginning to play with the gold chain on his neck. She twiddled it between her fingers, looking back up at him. "How long have you been wearing this?"

"Just today." EJ answered.

"You should wear it more often." She tugged him closer using the chain as she whispered. "Very hot."

The girl then connected her lips with his, smiling widely into the kiss. She pulled his even closer, their chests pressed up together as EJ held onto her waist. Dylan moved so one hand was playing with the hair on the nape of his neck and the other hand with holding the side of his face. They stayed like that for a while, glad their night had ended happily.

Dylan pulled away with a content sigh as EJ looked down at her. He ran a hand over his chain, glancing back up at Dylan.

"After that kiss... I'm never taking this off."
