chapter thirteen
crazy in love

They were now in another activity, one called Dewey Says. It was basically Simon Says, but if Dewey said Simon says instead of Dewey Says and someone did that command, they would get out. Dylan stood next to Jet in the second row, the two of them stood behind Ricky and Gina, each standing in front of a cone that showed their team colour.

"Dewey says hop on one foot." Dewey announced, through his megaphone.

All of them followed his instructions.

Ricky raised his hands. "Hey, Dewey? Is Simon gonna sue you for stealing his game?"

"I don't know Simon personally." Dewey replied.

"Breaking news. Dewey Wood locks Simon of Simon say in his basement."

Gina laughed loudly, but quickly covered it with her hand. Dylan laughed as well, shaking her head as she hit Ricky's back. "You are such an idiot."

Dewey blew his whistle and pointed at Ricky. "You're out. Buh-bye."

Ricky casually walked past Gina, moving to stand behind the line with all the other people that were out. He stood next to EJ, who stood with his hands in his pockets.

Wait, EJ?

When had he turned up?

The Caswell boy locked eyes with Dylan, smiling at her and sending her a thumbs up. Dylan blew him a kiss, the boy pretending to catch it dramatically making her laugh with a shake of her head.

"Dewey says stop." Dewey stated, and all of them stopped. "Dewey says hop on one foot." Dylan began to hop on one foot once again. "Dewey says stop jumping and put your right hand on your head." Everyone did the command. "Dewey says dance like you're at camp prom."

Dylan began to dance but then her mind registered what Dewey had said. Camp prom? She continued dancing, but a smile on her face and her stomach rushed with excitement.

Ashlyn fully stopped. "What'd you say?" Dewey blew his whistle at her, and Ashlyn leaned in closer to Jet. "Did he say there's a Camp Prom?"

Dewey pointed at her. "You." He waved his hand and Ashlyn walked away. "Stop." He blew his whistle and pointed at a girl on the Yellow Team. "Dewey says spin in a circle." Dylan spun in a circle. "Simon says stop." Dylan caught on and continued, but Gina and some girl from the Yellow Team stopped. "Oh, I'm Dewey, not Simon! You two, you're out. Dewey says that is a great victory for the Yellow Team. Congrats, you three."

Dylan high-fived Jet and then hugged Maddox since the three of them were left before she wandered over to her friends. Her arm crossed across her chest and a smug smile on her face. "Yellow Team wins again."

"Dewey says get ready for the climbing wall next." Dewey voiced. "We're having fun."

"Did he say climbing wall?" Kourtney asked.

"Yeah. I'll meet you guys there." EJ responded.

"Dude, where are you always going?" Ricky questioned.

"Just getting everything ready for the show."

"You can't do that at night?" Carlos wondered.

"Well, Miss Jenn thinks it's better to push..." EJ trailed off.

Dylan shook her head at EJ's mix-up, knowing he didn't want anyone to find out about Miss Jenn.

"What?" The group chorused.

EJ brought them into the barn. And sure enough, their drama teacher was standing there, smiling brightly at them. Dylan rushed towards the woman, and wrapped her in a hug. She missed the woman a lot. Everyone else gave her their own hugs of greeting before they crowded around the stage, which Miss Jenn had sat on. Dylan sat next to Kourtney by Miss Jenn as their group all spoke over each other, trying to explain to Miss Jenn how camp was going.

Miss Jenn clapped her hands to get her attention. "Wildcats."

"What are you doing here?" Carlos asked.

"EJ asked for a couple directing pointers and I had already been back from my Caribbean cruise for fifteen minutes, so I drove here." Miss Jenn explained.

"Wow."

"Are you tired?" Ricky questioned.

Miss Jenn smiled for a moment. "It's starting to hit me. Tell me about you. What is happening with the show?"

"Dylan and I got Anna and Elsa." Gina told her, the two girls squealing for a moment at the prospect of playing the leads.

"I got Olaf." Carlos admitted. "But there's no dressing room, so I basically spend all day in costume."

"Noted." Miss Jenn nodded.

"And I'm Kristoff, but maybe my dad already told you." Ricky replied.

"Oh, and remind me later, he sent me with an early birthday gift for you." Miss Jenn then turned to Ashlyn. "Oh, and who are you playing, Ashlyn? Are you Anna and Elsa's long-lost sister who they discover on ancestry.com?"

"We're not allowed to add parts to this one." Ashlyn revealed. "I checked. Several times. I'm actually in the ensemble with Kourtney."

Miss Jenn nodded in understanding. "A musical is a beautiful body. The ensemble is its sturdy backbone."

"Sorry, guys, we have to get back to the climbing wall or we're gonna forfeit the whole game." EJ cut in.

"Oh boy." Kourtney let out. Dylan grabbed her hand, squeezing it reassuringly.

"Miss Jenn, do you wanna come watch?" Gina asked.

"Oh, I don't have my theatre glasses or athletic footwear." Miss Jenn responded.

Carlos walked up to her. "Come on, Miss Jenn. Let's go to camp."

All of them stood up – including Miss Jenn. They walked outside and joined the crowd around the climbing wall, which was actually pretty tall. Dylan had her arm linked with EJ, standing close to him as she watched someone from the Yellow Team come down from the top.

Kourtney stared up at it. "Oh my goodness."

"It's big." Carlos said.

Dylan snorted but didn't say anything when EJ nudged her and sent her a look.

"This is our final athletic competition before the big sing-off." Val told them. "We'll do a series of sprints mano-a-mano and one player will prevail each time." She looked at her clipboard. "Okay, um, Kourtney, Gina, you're up."

Dylan placed a hand on Kourtney shoulder. "You got this Kourt."

Kourtney and Gina stepped up to the wall and got strapped up in safety gear. Dylan took a step closer to the wall, making EJ come with her. She frowned slightly at the way Kourtney's hands were shaking as she put on her helmets. It was then Dylan suddenly remembered her best friend's irrational fear of heights.

"Let's look alive, people, we're up next." EJ stated. He then walked back into the crowd, standing near Dylan once again. "How was Gina's basketball triumph?"

"Upsetting for me." Dylan sighed. "I hate losing."

"I know." EJ nodded.

"Let's do this." Val said excitedly.

Dylan stepped forward. "Oh, um, I just remembered that Idina Menzel mentioned on a podcast that Elsa's actually afraid of heights. And Kourt is my understudy so she should also embrace Elsa."

"Really?" Carlos voiced. "She lives in a tower."

"Not, now, Carlos."

"Come on." Val encouraged brightly.

Kourtney sighed and walked up to the wall where Gina was already waiting.

"Three, two, one." Val counted before blowing her whistle.

Gina started to climb the wall with ease. Dylan stared at Kourtney, who seemed to be frozen in place before she placed her foot on one of the notches, but backed away again.

"You got this, Kourt." Jet encouraged.

Ashlyn was staring at Gina. "She's remarkably fast."

"Dancer's body." Dylan commented, her eyes still trained on Kourtney.

In the end, Gina made it up the wall and ripped off the Velcro to signal she won. Kourtney, however, hadn't even climbed the wall a little, still firmly placed on the ground.

"Great!" Kourtney exclaimed. "Gina won. We're done. We're done."

"But you have to at least try." Val insisted.

Kourtney got detached from the rope and took off her helmet. "Look, you all are amazing at these games without trying. If I were to try now in front of all of you, I wouldn't be able to control what happens."

"That's why we have to push through. Even when it's hard. Kourtney, Kourtney, Kourtney..."

They all started to chant with Val. Dylan, however, stayed quiet. If Kourtney didn't want to do it, she didn't have to. No one could force her.

Miss Jenn stepped forwards. "Campers." She motioned zipping her lips. "Mummy's talking."

She turned back to Kourtney and had a quiet conversation that ended in a hug. Dylan unlinked her arm through EJ's and looked up at the climbing wall.

"I would've crushed Gina." Dylan stated. "Literally and in this game."

"Yeah?" EJ nodded.

"Yep." Dylan smiled.

"You wouldn't be scared?" EJ wondered.

"No." Dylan responded. "I'm not scared of heights. I'm scared of stupid things, like change and failure, and everyone leaving me. I can deal with heights, and spiders, and clown."

"I get it." EJ agreed with her. "I'm scared of things like that too."

Miss Jenn turned back to them all. "Well, I have got to get back on the road, because I have a hard out at being up more than forty hours in a row."

Dylan turned to Gina with a small smile. "G."

"Hey." Gina looked at her sheepishly.

"I don't forgive you." Dylan stated. "Not yet. But for now, we're still sisters. I'm still here for you."

"You're my best friend, Dylan." Gina told her truthfully.

"I believe you."

"Richard." Miss Jenn called. She then dug through her purse and brought out a very heavy looking present. "From your dad." She threw it at him, and Ricky caught it, doubling over slightly from how heavy it was. "Break a leg out there. Jennifer, out." She walked for a moment before stopping. "Where's the door."

It was finally time for the last activity of Colour War. They all gathered in the amphitheatre, the Yellow Team on one side and the Blue Team on the other. Dylan sat between Maddox and Carlos.

"Okay." Val began, speaking into a microphone from the stage. "Hi, um, it's a tie game, so the outcome of this cheer-off determines the fate of Colour War." They all cheered. "Okay. So this year, I have picked It's On from Camp Rock 2. And I printed out lyrics sheets, but if you don't know the words, that means something went deeply wrong in your childhood and you didn't watch this iconic sequel. Oh, and as a reminder, when I stop singing, somebody has to take over. Here we go."

Val pointed the microphone at Jet.

"Drums." Jet recited.

"A little guitar please." Val continued as the music started to play. "One, two, three, four. I hope you're ready for the time of your life just look at me, I put a gleam in your eye, buckle up, we're gonna take you for a ride."

Ricky took the outstretched microphone from Val and walked over to the Yellow Team "Let's go, we got you going good in the vibe."

Gina took the microphone from him. "Everybody put your hands to the sky."

"Hands to the sky." EJ added from behind her.

Ashlyn took the microphone next. "Buckle up, we're gonna take you, take you high."

"Show me, show me, show me, show me, show what you got." All of them sang while preforming choreography while sitting down. "C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon ready or not, la-la-la-la-la-la, let me see how you bop, it's on, it's on, it's on. Get crazy, crazy, crazy, take it over the top cause we, 'cause we, 'cause when we rock, we let it rock. Rock it, rock it, rock it, rock it, dance 'til we drop. It's on, it's on, it's on."

Jet took the microphone from Val. "Okay now, are you ready? One, two. One, two, three, four." He walked up to the Blue Team. "Show stopping when I step in the place before it's done, you're gonna beg me to stay, get on board, c'mon let's ride the wave."

Jet then walked back over to the Yellow Team. He handed the mic to Maddox, who held her hand out for Dylan to take. The girl smiled at Maddox, allowing her to pull her hug.

"Let's go, let's go, we just do what we do." Maddox sang, the two girls walking casually over to the Blue Team. "Watch me break and pop, I'll pass it to you."

She then handed the mic to Dylan, who stopped in front of EJ. She smiled down at him, placing a finger under his chin and forcing him to look up at her with a smug look in her eyes as she sang, watching as he face turned red. "You wanna rock like us 'cause we're never second place."

Dylan handed the mic back to Val, and all of them stood up, doing new choreography.

"Show me, show me, show me, show me, show what you got. C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon ready or not. La-la-la-la-la-la, let me see how you bop. It's on, it's on, it's on. Get crazy, crazy, crazy, take it over the top cause we, 'cause we, 'cause when we rock, we let it rock. Rock it, rock it, rock it, rock it, dance 'til we drop. It's on, it's on, it's on."

Val help up the microphone to Jet for a moment, who extended the last note in a perfect run.

Ricky took the microphone, stepping up to the front towards the stage. "Okay, now, are you ready?"

They all followed his lead, standing at the front, the Yellow Team and Blue Team facing each other.

Carlos had another microphone. "One, two, one, two, three."

Jet stepped up with the microphone. "The-the-there is no competition, that's why we're in the number one position. That crew can't hang with us, man, we're too dangerous."

Maddox skipped forwards, taking the microphone from him. "Uh, uh, ain't got the style or the stamina."

"Just doing our thing get hooked on our swing." Ricky and Ashlyn voiced together.

"Rocking the place, dropping the bass." Carlos and Kourtney continued.

"Making everyone sing." Gina and EJ sang.

"Uh-huh, yeah, we make the bell ring." Jet and Maddox finished.

Val walked down the aisle they had made between the teams. "It's on, it's on. Ooh-oh, it's on"

Jet placed his elbow on her shoulder. "It's on, it's on, it's on."

"It's on, it's on, it's on, it's on."

"It's on, it's on."

"It's on."

They all did choreography now mixing the two teams together like they did in Camp Rock 2. "Show me, show me, show me, show me, show what you got. C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon ready or not. La-la-la-la-la-la, let me see how you bop. It's on, it's on, it's on.

All of them then paired up doing choreography with a member of the opposite team. Dylan was paired with Ricky, her eyes narrowing jokingly at him as they danced.

"Get crazy, crazy, crazy, take it over the top cause we, 'cause we, 'cause when we rock, we let it rock. Rock it, rock it, rock it, rock it, dance 'til we drop. It's on, it's on, it's on."

Jet got lifted onto two members of the Yellow Team's shoulders, finishing the song. "It's on, yeah."

All of them cheered, Dylan smiling at Kourtney, the two of them holding hands together as they waited to hear who won now that the cheer-off was over.

Corbin looked into the camera Channing was holding. "America, I am so glad that the missing camper got rescued cause he just caused the Yellow Team to win Colour War!"

Dylan gasped excitedly and surged forwards, wrapping Kourtney in a tight hug. Kourtney laughed loudly and hugged her back, starting to jump and down, which forced Dylan to jump and down as well. They let each other go just in time to see Val hand Jet an oar, signalling their victory. Blue and yellow streamers then erupted.

She started to high-five some other members on her team, hugging Maddox in glee before approaching EJ. He had just patted Gina's shoulder at their loss. Gina walked over to talk to Ashlyn. Dylan watched her go before turning to EJ.

"Oh, well, would you look at that." Dylan stated smugly. "Yellow Team won. I crushed you, Caswell."

EJ scoffed and crossed his arms across his chest. "Whatever, Valdez."

Dylan narrowed her eyes at him playfully before she pressed up onto her toes, wrapping her arms around his neck and playing with the hair at the back of his neck. EJ wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her closer to him.

Dylan smiled, their lips just millimetres from touching. "That's what you get for lying to me."

She then dropped back down onto her feet, a smirk on her face as he gaped at her. She turned around and began walking towards where Maddox was.

"Dylan!"

"A billion sorrys, Eej." Dylan called over her shoulder with a smile. "Karma."

She laughed at the look on his face as she continued to walked off, unaware of the camera on her as she walked away from her boyfriend.

Dylan chatted to Maddox for a little while, giving her advice on how to approach things with Jet. After a while, the brunette began to help clear away all the rubbish, a small smile on her face as she cleaned. The sun began to set when Ricky suddenly appeared in front of her.

"Oh my god." Dylan jumped in fear. "Ricky! Don't do that. I need to put a bell on you or something."

"I need advice." Ricky stated.

"Okay."

"I want to ask Gina to camp prom." Ricky told her quietly, looking around to see if anyone could hear him.

"Okay."

"So what do I do?" Ricky asked.

"Ask her to camp prom." Dylan tilted her head in confusion, not understanding why he needed her help.

"But like, how? And does she even like me? I don't know, I haven't really liked a girl since Nini and I need help, please." Ricky stared at her with pleading eyes.

Dylan sighed. "Just ask her, Richard. Please for the love of God, ask her."

"It can't be that simple." Ricky shook his head.

"It is." Dylan stated. "Just ask her, don't wait around, okay? I waited around with EJ at first and I let people get in my head about it. I mean, my mother got in my head about EJ and if it wasn't for Ash and Nini I wouldn't be here with him right now. If you wait, she'll move on. Girls like Gina don't wait around for guys."

"You're right." Ricky nodded.

"Go." Dylan smiled, gently pushing him towards Gina.

"I'm going!" Ricky exclaimed loudly, glaring at her for pushing him. Dylan let out a small laugh, shaking her head slightly. Dylan watched as Gina turned at the sound of Ricky's exclamation, glancing between the boy and a laughing Dylan with a small glare on her face.

Huh, so much for sisters.

Dylan spun around when she heard footsteps approaching her. A smile on her face at the sight of EJ approaching her. "Hi."

"Valdez." EJ greeted.

Dylan gasped dramatically, holding her hand over her chest. "Not the last name. What did I do?"

"You know what you did." EJ stated, raising his eyebrows. Dylan knew he was referring to earlier.

"Don't be made at me baby." Dylan pouted. "I'll make it up to you."

"Yeah, how?" EJ asked.

Dylan smiled, leaning up and pressing her lips to his. EJ gripped her waist, pulling her closer to his and she wrapped her arms around his neck once more. Dylan allowed herself to bask in the kiss for a few moments before she pulled away. She smiled at him, pressing her forehead to his as he smiled down at her.

"Better?" She whispered.

"Mmm, not sure." EJ replied.

Dylan shook her head, kissing his once again. EJ smiled into the kiss, being the one to pull away this time. Dylan let out a content sigh.

"Okay, so I know it's not technically allowed because Maddox told me about the rule but... will you go to Camp Prom with me?" Dylan asked him. "Not like together, together. We won't walk in together but like, we'll alternate between running lines and dancing and I'll paint my nails pink so I match with that stupid pink suit I know you're wearing."

"I guess we haven't been to a dance together yet." EJ responded, looking down at her with a soft smile. "It would be an honour to go, but not go, to the Camp Prom with you."

Dylan let out a small laugh, pressing up on her toes to kiss him, her heart pounding against her chest.

Right as their lips touched, loud booms sounded from right over them. Dylan pulled away and looked up, grinning as fireworks filled the sky. Maybe it was a sign – the fireworks going off the second she kissed EJ.

EJ stared down at her, nothing but adoration across his features as he watched his girlfriend's whole face light up from the bright fireworks. He brought his hand up to her cheek, making her look at him again.

"This is so Kiss me coded." Dylan stated.

"What?" EJ shook his head.

Dylan pulled her phone out, which she had received back since the Yellow Team. Dylan went onto her apple music and started to play, Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer, turning the volume up and placing it back in her pocket.

"Kiss me, out of the bearded barley, nightly, beside the green, green grass." The song began to play through her phone's speaker.

"Do you relate a song to every situation?" EJ asked her.

"Yes." Dylan nodded. "But this song fits this moment. Like in the romcoms Eve forces me to watch, this song always plays when the main characters realise they're in love with each other."

EJ breath hitched at her words, the song truly fit with how he was feeling.

Dylan smiled at him, scrunching her nose up as he pulled her even closer to her. She placed her hands either side of his face and kissed him again. It felt as if the world faded with this kiss. It was just them. Just EJ and Dylan.

Just two kids crazy in love without even knowing it.

"Silver moon's sparkling so kiss me."
