Confused
Ignorant of the world, I dived into dreamland. I had stayed up really late because of some gems I was trying to identify. I had received them on a short notice and wouldn't have received them but seeing as it wasn't a large cache of gemstones and the owner was ready to pay any amount of money reasonable, I decided to give it a try.
But I hadn't even closed my eyes for a nanosecond when my bedside alarm clock began it's daily devotion. It was just 5: 30am, so i stopped the alarm. It wouldn't hurt if I woke up by 7 and showed up to work two hours later right?
I wasn't even out for thirty minutes when the doorbell rang. I groaned, almost dragging my hair out of their roots. It was like the universe was against me getting some rest. I opened my eyes, wishing deeply that the person standing outside the door would just walk away but how wrong could I possibly be?
After much silence, I sighed in pleasure about to dwell back into my dreams when the doorbell rang again. My left eye twitched in annoyance. Standing up, I shoved my feet into my pink flip flops.
Opening the door absentmindedly, I leaned against the frame. I was really tired and didn't care less of my appearance, all I wanted to do was dive deep and dead into sleep.
"You have practical a minute to identify yourself and state your reasons for being here" my eyes were still closed as I tried to stifle a yawn.
"How very pristine of you, Alba" Was it just me or was Alejandro standing right now in front of me. Me in all my glory.
If anything goes wrong, I'm pretty sure I would be the best cast for a deer caught in the headlights.
"Alejandro" and if I hadn't suffered enough embarrassment from my completely messy look, my voice just had to nail me up for it.
"Alba" he dragged my name out in such delicacy, It felt like I had been dropped into the cold pacific ocean in the middle of winter. But correct me if I'm wrong, is that amusement I see in his eyes. I mean, I could literally see the swirls of green dancing in his-
"I don't have all day, Alba, maybe you should reschedule your staring for another day" Oh well. Here goes another cut to my dignity.
"I wasn't staring"I defended myself even though I knew I was and I knew that he caught me doing that.
"Say that to the pool leaking from your mouth" he said with so much disgust that I had to check if I was actually drooling. And would you look at that. I was dry. Completely dry and spotless. I sent him the harshest glare I could muster but I pretty sure it came out like a look of stupidity.
He simply rolled his eyes before shoving his palm into the pocket of his black slacks.
"It's 6am in the morning" I started in annoyance.
"Don't you think I'm aware of that?" He replied, cocking his eyebrow up at me.
"I ought to be in bed and you at wherever you should be by 6am on a Monday morning" I grumbled.
"But look at the irony of life, I'm standing here in front of you to remind you that you work for me and ought to be prepared for work" he replied sarcastically.
"Last time I checked, I worked for gemological institute of America not Blackheart Ltd"
"And last time I also checked, I was going to pay you $500 thousand US dollars for a contract with you signed, unfortunately" he replied, mumbling the last word under his breath so that I wouldn't catch it but I did.
"I don't want your money, Alejandro"
Says who? I could get a yacht if I wanted to detox and believe me, there's nothing as sweet as being lost in the middle of the Caribbean sea, tanning under the sun and sipping on a coconut drink and reading the latest magazines on my yacht but sadly, I don't have one and my pride wouldn't let me have one.
"Then if it's my gems you're looking for, I'm sorry ma'am but those are completely indispensable at this moment" Oh Lord.
I shut my eyes tight for a moment, taking in a deep breath. I don't think I remember myself waking up this morning to be annoyed and irritated.
"I'm sorry, Alejandro, but that is still not what I want either"
He didn't believe me of course because he let out a sardonic scoff. Rolling my eyes, I leaned further into the door frame. This conversation was beginning to drain the little strength I had out of me and I had a feeling it would probably leave me as a dead woman.
"What do you want, Alejandro"
"Yes, you are my temporary employer and yes I ought to report to work early, so aside from telling me what I already know, what else do you want"
"A matchbox? A cube of sugar? Unfortunately I had run out of sugar and forgot to purchase it when I visited the mall so... What do you want?"
"We have a flight to catch, Ms. Alba"I narrowed my eyes at him. Was he trying to get me angry or was he just plain stupid. I think both of them would work, a lot more on the first one because my left eye couldn't stop twitching.
"You know what" I stood up straight.
"I'm going to close this door and let you arrange your brain because I'm sure you hit your darn head on your way here because there is no way you and I can last a second together in the same place, it's even a miracle I haven't plunged my hair dryer all the way up your ass and trust me you don't want to know what I can do to you on a plane"
"Trust me, you don't want to know either" Was it just me or did his voice drop shades lower and became really low, husky and … seductive. My nipples literally hardened at his words and I seriously wished they went unnoticed. But how wrong could I possibly be. His eyes ran their length over me, darkening at they went lower. He bit down on his lower lip as he made his eyes hesitantly and slowly run up my body. They lingered a bit at my chest and my lips for a second or so.
Dare I say I was turned on at the concept of Alejandro checking me out. I mean, I ought to be angry but my stupid brain just couldn't boot on time and I stood frozen. When my brain did finally boot, I glanced down at my shirt.
And oh! Would you look at that. I had two arrows pointing at the north pole.
Oh God! Where did my dignity run to? I folded my hands around my chest in attempt to cover them but it pretty much looked like I was trying to push them out. His eyes, like magnets followed my actions and by the time we locked eyes, there was nothing of green in his eyes. They were completely black like the midnight.
Okay, I think I'm the one that needs to shut the door and arrange my brain because I'm definitely sure I hit my head. But was I seeing lust in his eyes.
He shut his eyes tightly for a minute, taking in deep breaths. By the time they were opened, they were back to their normal color and let's not forget the new cold I've become to accustom myself with. His jaw was clenched so tight, I was sure his teeth were beginning to take a dent already.
"We'll leave for Canada firstly to get the chemical decomposition of the gems there, then we would touch down at Australia then the new mine at Sri Lanka" I didn't even have the strength to argue because his voice was deeper and meant business. The cold and stoic aura was back and his eyes were closed up.
I couldn't even answer so I simply nodded. I was still in shock. With what had just transpired a minute ago, I sure as hell was going to be lost in the dark corners of my brain today.
"Good"
"My driver will come and pick you for the airport by 4pm sharp, I expect that you'd be ready by then" he didn't even wait for my reply before he turned around and headed for the black Rolls Royce that sat across my house. Sliding in with ease, he started the car and drove away without even glancing back.
So here I stood, on my porch in my old red Harvard shirt, hair sticking out like daggers in confusion and lost in my brain. I caught a highschool kid standing at the corner of the road where he was watering his parents flower garden staring at me like I was a ghost, his work lost forgotten as he continued staring till the hose fell out of his hands and wet his shoes. He jumped in shock and realization while I shot him and eerie but warm smile. He freaked out so bad that he ran into his house.
Well, that was fun but now, I think my brain is about to shut down so I dragged myself inside and literally passed out on the sofa.
