22. Smile to the camera!
Misty walked quickly through the hallways. She paused for a few seconds to check who was calling her. It was Rudy.
"Not you now!"
Misty ignored it and walked again. She wasn't sure where that office was. She only saw it once – was it the one with the black leather door, or was that Ash's? She wasn't even sure if she was on the right floor or not. Ash was on a business strip so his office wasn't accessible. Where's that anyway? Where is she? This building was a maze...
But this was the perfect time to get the sh*t done over with. She and Delia really have to talk. Ash was outside the region and she didn't have to worry about him worrying about her talking to his mother, or even stopping her.
Of course, she told him nothing yet.
"Excuse me?" She approached a receptionist. "Can you show me where the president's office is? I need to talk to Mrs. Ketchum."
"Hello Miss Williams. Mrs. Ketchum is in a reunion right now." The woman said. "The board."
"Oh."
She knew where that was.
Misty knocked on the door. There was no response. She knocked again. Still no response. Misty was getting angry, because she could hear them talk. She really didn't care if they were busy. She was feeling all pumped up (maybe it's the hormones) and honestly, she didn't like that someone was ignoring her now.
She knocked loudly on the door.
"Yes?" Oh, Delia's yes.
Yes, she should do this right in front of those board members – all of those people who thought she was running after Ash's money. Everyone needed to know that she's truly in love with Ash, is pregnant with his child and she will do anything to be with him, including stepping on her career.
Misty opened the door quickly. Her eyes met right with Delia's.
"Oh." Delia got up. It was just her, one man and one woman. "Misty?"
"Yes, it's me." Misty got inside without bothering to close the door. "I have something to tell you and you should listen to me and not cut me off! Okay?"
"Wh-"
"First, I was never after Ash's money! I may have thought about becoming more famous from being with him but I never really went after his wealth!" Misty flailed her arms. "At first I thought he was handsome and really great for my Instagram and I love posting those quotes about love and – he looks really gorgeous in our pictures and there was this picture a paparazzi caught of us when we were in the mall with this lost cute child and it was on the magazine and I love it!"
"Misty!" Delia gasped. "W-"
"But I swear to God I was never after his money or anything he owns!" Misty started crying. "Damn hormones! I meant I love Ash with all my heart and if you tell me to kiss the ground right now to prove that I love Ash then I'd do it! Right now! Damn now!"
"No!" Ash's mother shouted. "Please!"
"I said don't cut me off lady!" Misty screamed. The two other members of the board were starting to get worried. One of them picked up the phone but Misty screamed again. "I'm not crazy! I'm just in love! I'm not crazy! I love Ash more than I love anything in the world! Take that you old man!"
"We know!" Ben tried to reassure her. "Please calm down!"
"I'm not finished yet!" Misty screamed loudly. She hid her face with her hands. "I'm pregnant and I'm happy about it! Why? Because it's Ash's child and it's the child of the man I love! Before you even start with your conspiracy theories and before you call that lawyer to sue me I can assure you I don't have a single penny to get a lawyer! So accept it! I'm pregnant with your grandchild and I didn't get pregnant on purpose to get something from this company because I don't even know how business works! Ash keeps talking about shares but I don't understand what shares are! Is it something you're supposed to share with someone? I don't know! Anything other than makeup and Instagram and clothes is beyond me! I'm not after anything! I just want to love Ash!"
"MISTY!"
Misty stopped. She pulled her hands away from her face. That voice. It was...
When she turned to her right, she could see right on that big video conference screen, the display of a lovely reunion table with people surrounding it, and a very, very, very familiar face; a very familiar black suit she packed herself – yes, she took away the blue suit and put instead the back suit. Yeah. Because she washed the black suit, but she wasn't sure if the blue one was clean or not. And she didn't like when Ash wore clothes again and again.
"I packed him the black suit." Misty spoke to no one in particular.
"You're pregnant?" Ash looked completely baffled. The other people at the table were starting to leave, one by one.
"We, uh, we'd like to discuss further details later. Thank you." One man spoke quickly to the camera and disappeared, leaving Ash by himself at the reunion table.
"Mom! Say something!" Ash screamed.
Georgia and Ben left. Delia shook her head. "I know nothing of this!" She reached out for the button. "I need to turn this off. You can talk with Misty when you get home."
Ash slammed his hands against the table. "Don't you dare!"
"Okay! Fine! I'll talk to him!" Misty finally spoke. Her hands were trembling.
"He has no access to those cigarettes of his so good luck. I'm out of here." Delia grabbed her files and headed out of the reunion hall.
It was just Misty and Ash, in another region, his face on the screen, not looking happy at all.
Misty stood facing him. "I was go-"
"WHEN?" Ash slammed his hands again against the table.
"W-when you get back."
"AFTER YOU TELL EVERYONE BUT ME?" Truth to be told, she's never seen Ash as angry as now. She didn't even know he could get angry to this point. "WHO ELSE KNOWS?"
"Uh, uhm..." Misty rubbed her hands together. She spoke in a low voice, "Your grandparents."
"What?" Ash didn't hear well.
Misty grabbed one of the microphones. "Your grandparents."
Ash paused for a moment. "So, practically, the whole family knows – or was supposed to know before me. You got here to tell my mom. You had no plans of telling me before her!"
Misty started pulling at her hair. She brought the microphone closer to her mouth. "I'm sorry."
"Don't give me that crap. Try something else. You have one minute." Ash looked down at his wristwatch.
Misty frowned. "Uuuh, uhm..." She kept pacing back and forth in the room. She stopped, and turned toward the screen.
"I love you." She spoke into the micro. "I really, really, really do love you."
Ash had his elbows on the table and his head on his palms. He looked blankly at her.
"And I'm really happy I'm pregnant." She added. "And even though I just literally tossed my career in the trash, I feel great about everything. I want to be the mom of your child. I just... I want to be with you."
"Great Instagram talk, Mist." Ash leaned back on his chair.
"Please don't abandon me." Misty started making crying voices.
"Nooo, noo, no, no one is abandoning anyone." Ash shook his head. "But you know, you could have told the father first, since, you know, he's the father. He made you pregnant."
"I will tell him next time." Misty nodded quickly.
Ash started laughing. Misty smiled.
"Okay, next time." Ash looked at his watch. "I have somewhere else to be at."
"Okay..."
"And Mist?" Ash got up. "You're a, uh, a ball of... emotions. Maybe you need some yoga."
"Hallelujah! You finally learned what it's called!" Misty giggled. "And of course. I'm learning poses for pregnant women." She started laughing. "It took you all this time to learn what it is called!"
"You can laugh about it now." Ash adjusted the hems of his shirts. "This whole reunion is recorded. I can't wait to show you your face when you were yelling at my mom. I'll put it on DVD and show it to the kid. We'll keep it in the company's safe. It's going to be our treasure – transmitting it from generations to generations. God, I love this."
Misty stopped smiling.
"I should go. I'll call you tonight." Ash winked at her and turned off the camera. The screen went black.
Misty breathed heavily. She turned around. She watched all those cables under the table, those little ugly microphones, those buttons on the end of the table...
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"
Delia, Ben and Georgia stood outside, waiting for the storm to pass. They could hear Misty throw any electronics in the room against the door. A doctor was waiting for her as well, with a needle in his hand, and some bodyguards beside him, just in case.
FIN
An epilogue? Maybe, maybe not. But I hope you enjoyed this story. It was absolutely fun to write. I have a lot of drafts/potential books on my laptop and let's hope I come up with something great for everyone to read on this quarantine. Until next time!
