"Okaaay..." Delia cleared her throat and hid the record under a file. It seems like Misty has been trying beauty tricks at home and waxing herself instead of using Ash's credit card for a day at a spa.
"I think Ash is in charge of the house shopping." Delia chuckled.
"That's quite responsible." The others laughed.
Ash seemed happy lately.
He never talks about the presidency, comes to office, go out to factories if necessary, sign papers, stay at work late if he has to - he was working in a way he never worked in before, and he wasn't blaming things on Delia like he used to do.
He called her every night to check on her.
"I don't know about you, but I think Ash is in love with the model." Jonathan spoke in a low voice. "Like, real love, true shit."
Silence around the room.
"They are a real couple." John added. "Like, doing it and all that - I mean, you've seen Ash lately? Look at him!"
"What? You see sex?" Bill chuckled. "How do you see that? Huh?"
"I don't really feel like talking about my son's sex life..." Delia looked annoyed.
"A woman and a man living with each other - I'm sorry John, but even if they're not in love, they could start having sex. This is Misty Williams. She's in the top ten in the region!"
"I'm sorry but I can't talk about Ash's-"
"But look at him! Look at his eyes!" Johnathan tried to convince his friend. "He is totally in love with the redhead!"
"And how do you know she's in love with him? Huh?" Georgia snapped. "I don't trust that woman the slightest bit! She's playing with Ash's heart and trying to win him over with her fake pancakes! Do you know the saying? The way to a man's heart is through his stomach! That woman is like raisin cookies! You can't trust it!"
Delia hid her face with her hands as her partners argued about Ash's love life.
"Not everyone hates raisin cookies! My daughter-in-law makes great raisin cookies!"
"Oh, Bill!"
"Can we all calm down?" Delia attempted again.
"They are in love! End of discussion!" Johnathan shouted. "We should stop caring about their life and move on with the business! This board has become ridiculous!"
Delia, Ben, Georgia and Bill didn't reply.
"We wanted to make sure this isn't a game played by both, and we've come to the conclusion it's not."
"How are you so sure?" Georgia asked.
"Look at Ash's face!" Johnathan chuckled. "Can't you see? That boy is like our kid! We know him like the back of our hands!"
Ben leaned forward and opened his file. "Well, I admit Ash's love life isn't what we usually discussed during the board reunions."
Bill turned toward Georgia. "You need to come over someday, when my son and his wife are home - you'd love those raisin cookies."
Georgia rolled her eyes and leaned back on her leather chair.
Delia smiled to herself. She opened her file and checked the papers. "And I definitely need to go over my son's place and try those pancakes. What do you think?"
The other members of the board chuckled.
"Yeah, you should."
"Is it ready?"
"Almost."
Cooking was a process. It was all about the technique, concentration, and being precise. Some people would say cooking is a gift; Misty would say it's like math. Mostly logic.
"Even if it's ready, you know you can't start eating until your mom gets here, right?" Misty reminded the guy sitting on the counter, shaking his leg impatiently. "It's impolite to serve something touched."
"But it's just my mom." Ash watched the turkey in the oven. "She won't judge us!"
"She will judge me." What would Delia Ketchum, the great business woman, say about Misty if she serves turkey with a missing slice? Worse; this woman who's been running a successful business for years was Ash's mother. No mistakes were allowed.
"You're overreacting."
"We women understand each other." She couldn't let Ash slice her masterpiece.
Ash shrugged. He got off the counter.
"How do I look?" Misty stood facing Ash. "Am I beautiful like usual?"
"Like usual."
"I'm going natural. It's the new trend." Misty kept drawing circles on Ash's chest.
"Wait, you're not shaving?"
"No!" She slapped his arm. "I meant I'm using natural ingredients for my skin care! Everyone is doing it on Instagram!" She slapped his thigh. "And I don't shave - I wax!"
"Whatever is the way, please keep it up."
Misty giggled and hugged Ash. "I can't get enough of you." She rested her head on his chest. Ash grabbed her hand and kissed it. They paused upon hearing the doorbell ring.
"Mom's here! I can finally eat." Ash ran toward the door like an excited little boy who's been waiting for his parent to get home. Misty giggled, taking the turkey out of the oven and setting it on the table.
"I wasn't expected."
"Don't say that." Misty let Ash carve the turkey. He's given her those deathly glares when she picked up the fork and the knife and she assumed he wasn't happy with his 'role' taken away from him.
"It was Delia." Eleanor pointed at her daughter-in-law. "She invited me."
"Well, there is enough for everyone." Misty giggled. She got up and started serving the turkey Ash was slicing in dishes - until he gave her that deathly look again.
"It's my job! Get off." For a man who never knew how to do his laundry until Misty stepped in, he was quite good at slicing the meat.
"Okay." His reaction made the three giggle. "Let's let the man of the house do his job."
"Yes, you should." Ash served the nicely cut slices into the dishes in a way that amazed Misty.
Misty sat straight. "Nice."
He was finally done, satisfied. Ash sat down and picked up the fork to dig in the meat he was waiting impatiently for.
"It's good! Isn't it?" Eleanor turned toward Delia.
"It is. It's tender."
Misty looked for a response from Ash but he was too busy eating. She turned to look at the two women. "Thank you."
"Where did you learn to cook like this?" Eleanor looked a little surprised. "Did you get it from your mother?"
Ash was about to say something but Misty's hand on his thigh stopped him. She said, "No, I just learned with time. I moved out at sixteen so, I was on my own for a long time."
"That's very good." Eleanor commented. "And at least someone's been eating decent food lately." She threw Ash a teasing look.
"I'm not complaining."
"You shouldn't be! Are you helping out at least?"
Misty laughed. She looked at Ash. "Answer the question!"
"Dishwasher wise, I'm still in the middle of learning." He cocked his head. "Mastered laundry, though."
"He put a kitchen cloth in the dishwasher, once." Misty bit her lip to stop herself from bursting out in hard laughter.
"Hey!" Ash was blushing slightly. Misty thought it was cute. "I thought it'd wash with the dishes! It's soap and water!"
"Oh my God, Ash!" Delia gasped. "It could clog the machine!"
"Please don't let him come near anything, dear." Eleanor talked to the redhead. "There could be a fire or a flooding because of him!"
"It's fine by me if I get to just eat." Ash shrugged and filled his plate with more turkey.
"That's what men keep saying when they get married!"
"..."
"..."
"..."
"Oh!" Eleanor put her hand over her mouth. "I said marriage, didn't I? That slipped!"
"Yes." Delia turned to look instantly at Misty, just to see her reaction. The redhead was poking at her food, not looking up. She looked uneasy.
"Yeah, you did." Ash was chuckling. He continued eating.
"I'm looking for great grandchildren!" Eleanor laughed. "I must want them so bad!"
There was a laugh, and soon, the subject was forgotten.
