All things truly wicked start from innocence- Ernest Hemingway

It was bustling and heavy in the cafeteria. The university football team were about to leave for a match in Okinawa; everyone was buzzing. At least, everyone around them. There were a few, some in groups and some alone, that were turned away. Some looked annoyed by the noise, other looked onwards in varying shades of either scorn or scholarly pride. Miyamura Shoujiki, an eighteen year old brunette, barely even noticed this, headphones stuck in her ears blaring out heavy rock music.

She swallowed down some coffee with a grimace, pinching the bridge of her nose as she scribbled down notes. She wasn't partial to the taste of Coffee, she found it rather too bitter, but it kept her awake, and awake was what she needed. She had a test next period and had pulled an all-nighter studying. The exam was in diseases of the blood; not her strongest suit. The stress she felt was set into the muscles of her shoulders.

The brunette jumped as she felt a nudge to her shoulder, nearly throwing the coffee everywhere. She pulled out an earphone and turned in her seat, greeting her friend and teammate with a somewhat sore grin. "Whassup?"

"You look like shit, Shou-chan." Katsuki was a tall girl, a bit rough around the edges with her short, electric blue hair in two bunches for the day. The two girls had quickly become friends upon entering High school- since they were both on the school's hockey team- and thusly both aspired to enter Kamii university together. Continuing their mutual hobby had strengthened their bond over the years. "You coming to practice tonight?"

Shou huffed a breath into her bangs, somewhat annoyed as they just flopped in front of her eyes again. "Katsuki-chan, as soon as this exam is over I'm going to go home and sleep. If I don't die first." she rested her chin on the table, "I'd be worse than useless on the pitch."

"Fair enough." Katsuki admonished her, pretending to be disappointed, "Well, I expect you out on the pitch tomorrow, bright and early!"

'Well... that was awful...' Shoujiki released a sigh, stretching to work the lethargy and tension from the two hour long exam out of her muscles. All she wanted to do was go and get a Mocha, then go home. Her body felt heavy and her mind even worse. She took note of the message board as she passed by, realising with a grunt that she should really check to see if there were any notices for the Hockey team.

There weren't- it was just full of leaflets for extra curriculars and a poster for some guy that went missing. Shou yawned and moved on, her feet carrying her to the Starbucks that was en route to her home. With a mouthful of Mocha she felt somewhat more alive, but only a good twelve hours of sleep would fully revive her.

She was almost blind to her fellow pedestrians and all the traffic she was so tired- paying no mind to anything, just thinking of the warm, comfy bed that waited for her back in her apartment. So when some kid crashed into her, there hadn't been even the slightest inkling of anticipation in her. And so, her hand lost grip on the cup, sending it crashing to the floor and all over the shoes of some unsuspecting passerby.

"Ah, sorry." she mumbled, bending down to pick up the cup, 'Bratty kids running around in the street...'

"No, no. It's fine." the owner of the shoes replied, sounding relaxed, cheerful. Shou finally straightened to squint up at him, though didn't really see him. "Moreover, are you okay?"

"Yeah, yeah. I'm alright. Thanks." she said, tossing the paper cup in the bin.

"Hm... well, you want a new coffee? On me." Shou was pulled out of her dazed state in surprise. Her hair was a mess, she was in a t-shirt and jeans, make-upless no less- and some guy was asking her to go get coffee with him? She squinted more clearly at the guy. He had a cheery, nice face and dark eyes- though she wondered about his hair. It was white. He must have killed it with bleach to get it that pale. He smiled. He had a nice smile.

"I- I don't even know your name." she stammered, not really knowing how to respond to this stranger she'd thrown coffee on.

"Kaneki Ken. So is that a yes..?" his slightly awkward smile was so dazzling she didn't really know what to do with herself. She didn't want to look away in case she was daydreaming. As sleep deprived as she was, it was very possible.

"I... guess..." she murmured, straightening her back and allowing him to guide her toward a Costa. Realising she'd forgotten, distracted, she said, "Ah- my name's Shoujiki," she felt no need to tell him her last name in case he was a dodgy type, "You can call me Shou if you like."

She found it fitting that he was the type to order black, unsweetened coffee. It somehow suited him- rich and dark, a heady scent that would stick in your mind long after it assaults your senses. Upon her stumbling and nearly falling as a result of tripping over her own feet, he'd suggested they take a moment to sit in the café so she could get her bearings and perhaps regain some energy. She'd been too dazed by the heat of the hands that had steadied her balance to disagree.

They made small talk, discussing varying things from school to politics. Shou found herself getting quite worked up- since she held a job to pay for her apartment and bills, things like taxes and the government were a touchy subject. She soon realised, when she got to her feet, that she was getting way too animated. She sat down, red faced.

"Ah- sorry." she mumbled, and he- Kaneki- rubbed his chin, smiling.

"It's okay." he chuckled, then eyed her, seeming somewhat coy, cheeky. "Although- it seems like you've become a lot more energetic."

Shou just grinned awkwardly, "Yeah, I guess."

He started to get up, seeming mindful of her eyes that seemed unable to stop following his form. "Well, come on then. Let's get you home," something in his eyes was wicked as he spoke- though maybe not for the reasons she thought. "I'll walk you; can't have you tripping again."

The brunette looked down; he'd really seen some of her worst sides today. It was embarrassing. "Ah- you don't have to."

His responding smile- though beautiful- was calculating. She didn't see it. When she glanced up at him his smile was pure, cheerful. "I want to."

Ba-thump. She didn't protest after that. Shou allowed the cunning teen to walk with her; though it was never really her decision. There was something about Kaneki, something in the way he talked, his expressions, his demeanor, that took away her ability to disagree. She was caught up in his pace- and she didn't entirely mind. It was like being swept off her feet- in some ways literally.

"Sorry again about your shoes." Shou said as she stood with her back to her door. Or rather, the door to her apartment complex. He smiled as he waved off her apology.

"No worries. They're dry now, anyhow." he paused, seeming to think something over, then smiled, "But," Shou halted. This was the moment where he revealed himself to be a lot less nice than she thought he was. It had to be. He had seemed to be, thus far, much too nice to be a normal teenage boy. He fidgeted, looking awkward. "You could, er, make it up to me by- well, if you don't mind- maybe giving me your number?"

Shou blinked once. Then again. As the information finally processed in her sleep-deprived brain, she flushed a bright- almost neon- pink. "U-um, sure."

Kaneki lit up, and Shou didn't think  ever seen anything so beautiful. She used the opportunity of having his phone in her hands (to input her number) to calm down. Kaneki's smile transformed from being cold to warm in the split second it took for her to look up.

She didn't understand why he would want her number, though. Her scruffy, half-dead, post exam self. But no way could she ask something so embarrassing.

"You're a curious girl, you know, Shoujiki-san." he said, pulling her from her reverie. He was smiling in humour- Shou could only guess that she'd been pulling strange faces as a result of her deep train of thought. She grimaced.

"Don't say that..." then, she couldn't help but smirk, "And yet, you asked for my number..."

He smiled a wicked, somewhat flirtatious smile that made her knees weak and her stomach quiver. "That's because you've interested me, Shoujiki Miyamura." he pocketed his phone and the cheerful smile returned, "Well, I'll text you at some point. Ja ne."

The brunette's eyes followed until she could no longer see that head of strange, fluffy white hair. He seemed to melt into the crowds, and she couldn't bring herself to move.

It would be a lie to say he hadn't piqued her interest, too.
