marnie's relationship with her father is better than the one she has with her mother, but jonathan mcneal is far from winning father of the year award. he thinks his daughter is too fragile for this world, in his eyes she's just a dumb blonde little girl who needs more protection than he could ever provide. he is a terrible helicopter parent, who insists on accompanying marnie just about everything, he's the one who most of the time makes sure marnie is going to whatever dance lessons or gymnastics her mother has her signed up for and doesn't skip. even though he loves marnie more than life, she's less than thrilled to be around him most of the time due to his chronic need to mansplain everything to her, how he overreacts to every little thing, and how he just lets isla boss the both of them around. his protectiveness really stems from his unresolved trauma from losing his sister, and since marnie resembles beatrice so much he often treats marnie like a second chance when it comes to being able to protect her

beatrice died way before marnie was born, but she's told constantly by her dad and every relative on his side of the family about how much she looks like her aunt, though it really only takes on any form of meaning after the wedding altercation with beetlejuice. he yaps her ear off about how much she looks like a medium he killed years ago, before mimicking the screams and sobs of beatrice just before she died. after this, marnie looks more and more into her aunt, and when she finally gets her dad to talk about it, she learns beatrice did in fact have a rather unusual fascination with the dead and the afterlife

she doesn't properly meet beatrice until she learns some vengeful spirit has pulled her daughter into the netherworld, and she and lydia have to sneak into the afterlife to find her. turns out the ghost was in fact beatrice, who was using astrid as bait to draw out lydia and beetlejuice, since beatrice's wife delores wants to enact her revenge on the man who killed her. once beetlejuice is gone, beatrice apologizes and explains it was all kind of a big misunderstanding and promises to visit marnie sometime soon because she's so excited to have a niece! they actually get along really well

BACKSTORY.

born and raised in the small town of winter river, from a young age marnie mcneal was subjected to the belief by her parents and people around her that because she was blonde she had to like, and be good at, only certain things, like dancing or doing makeup, and that she was too dumb to understand things that were 'too complicated', like math, whether she liked it or not

from a young age, marnie struggled to live up to the expectations of what her parents wanted her to be. her mother wanted her to be a pretty little doll who just smiled and nodded her head, never speaking, and her father wanted her to be the replacement to the sister he lost long before his daughter was born, and the condescending nature of the people in around town who are convinced she'll never amount to anything but being someone's trophy wife, just because she's blonde 

however, when the maitlands died and a newer, significantly richer and, odder family moved into their house, marnie found herself drawn the strange goth girl who now lived just a few blocks away. with lydia, marnie found escape, she found a clean slate, someone who could just know her for being marnie, and not the dumb blonde pageant princess she seemed to be to everyone else
