C H A P T E R 22
A week in the hospital flew by like molasses since it was rather uninteresting. Every day, my parents, Elijah, and others would arrive. They would spend half of their day with me, but I just needed to rest, and being lazy like Koalas is not in my health. Finally, the day has arrived when I will be released from this filthy hospital.
The doctor has given me several medications and has also advised me to take some precautions. Now I'm changing into the clothes Emma brought me. I'm dressed in black sweatpants and blue jeans. Then, I tie my hair up in a tight ponytail. Mom and Dad were about to take me to their house, so they could look after me, but I refused because I didn't want to be a burden on them.
*At House*
As soon as I arrived at my house, a convivial feeling began to ramble through my mind. This is what I appreciate about my home. I'm at ease and ease here.
I've already eaten my breakfast, but I'm now bored. What am I supposed to do? I'm curious what Elijah is up to. My feelings for him are growing stronger by the day, now that I know he's my mystery man. He's always been there for me when I needed him.
Who would have thought that someone will break the hard shell of heartless Avery Bennett?
But I think I'm not confused about my mixed memories anymore. Suddenly, I hear a huge thundering sound outside the house. It seems like it will rain. I take my steps towards the window.
I look out the window. The sky is tar-black and the large clouds are moving towards my house. I heard a tapping on the window, and then it became a pitter-patter. The roofs of my car garage dance with spray and I can hear the murmuring of the rain through the window. It sounds like the buzzing of angry bees.
My eyes are admiring this amazing view, but suddenly my gaze shifts towards a black Mercedes which was coming towards my house. Whose car is it? As far as I know, Dalton and Elijah don't have black Mercedes.
The car stops at the entrance door of my house. My pupils dilate to scrutinize that view. A tall man comes out of that car. He is wearing a black three-piece suit with black goggles. His blond hair is slicked back, and he has a little beard on his face. But the main question is who is it?
He takes an umbrella from his car and opens my entrance door slightly and comes towards my house's main door. As soon as he reached my door, he rang the doorbell. I don't know why, but a weird and uncomfortable feeling is churning inside my house. Is it ok to open the door for an unknown man?
I walk towards the door slowly, a bit tense thinking about that unknown man. Turning the doorknob, I open the door and stick my head out.
“Are you miss Avery Bennett?” That man asks formally with his emotionless face.
“Yes, I'm Avery. What do you want?” I ask suspiciously, gulping inside my throat.
“Miss Bennett, don't you think that you should ask me this question while I come inside your house? Are you willing to make me soak and cold in this drizzling rain?” He asks as his slight dimples widen with a tiny smile.
“I'm sorry, but I don't know you. Why would I invite a stranger inside my house?”
“I may seem stranger to you, but I'm not intending to harm you in any manner.”
"Sure…" Saying this, I push the door in my direction, and let him in.
He puts his umbrella in the umbrella stand and comes into the living room. He takes his sit on the couch. I also sit on another couch in front of him.
“Now, tell me what do you want?” I ask in a stern tone, glaring at him.
“Miss Bennett, I'm Adam. I've something very important for you.” He says, taking out an orange envelope from his coat's pocket.
“If you just wanted to give me this envelope, then you should have given it at my door,” I say, taking that envelope from him.
“I know, but this envelope is extremely confidential, and I would advise you to open it once I'm out of your house.” Saying this, he gets up from the couch and goes out of the house.
What just happened?
Whatever… I should just open this envelope and see what is in it. Thinking this, I opened the envelope nervously. As soon as I read the paper inside it, my eyes widened in amusement.
What the actual fuck!
‘You were lucky that you didn't die in that accident, but it doesn't mean that you will live peacefully Little bird. I'm watching you. See you in future...’
As soon as I read this letter, a terrifying feeling came inside me. Who the fuck has sent this letter? There is no name or address on it. Nothing.
That Blondie must be working with this anonymous person, but what does he mean that he is watching me? Has he installed spy cameras in my place?
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. I need to call Elijah. Only he can help me in this mess.

Elijah's POV
Today Avery will be discharged from that hospital. I'm happy that she is fine now. Now, I can sense that the day which I'm anxiously waiting for is coming near. Avery will soon be in my arms.
Suddenly, my phone rings, drifting me from my dreams. Who is disturbing me? I check the caller ID. It is Avery. Gosh! What a coincidence. I picked up the call.
“Hello, Avery. How are you?”
“Hello, Elijah. I'm fine, but…”
“But what?”
“Well, the thing is that an unknown man came into my house-”
“—What? Are you fine? Where is he?”
“No… No… Calm down. I'm perfectly fine. He was harmless, but he brought an envelope to deliver it to me.”
“Envelope? What was in it?”
“I don't know, but there is a strange message in that envelope which is a bit scaring me.”
“What was that message?”
“It is from an anonymous person. The message states that You were lucky that you didn't die in that accident, but it doesn't mean that you will live peacefully Little bird. I'm watching you. See you in future…”
“Wait what? He is watching you!”
“I know right. Whoever this person is, has caused my accident. That's why…”
She sighs heavily.
“Can you come to my house? Please, I need you.”
“You don't have to say that. I've already decided to come to the house as soon as possible.”
“Thank you. Bye.”
“Bye…” Saying this, I hung up the call.
“Cole, come in my office!” I shout, switching on my speaker.
After some time, Cole comes into my office hurriedly.
“What happened? Why did you sound angry?” He says, crossing his arms on his chest nervously.
“I need you to set some of our strongest men to guard Avery's house. That motherfucker Callan is trying to do something. We need to be careful.”
“What? What did he do now?” Cole asks in a shocking tone.
“That Callan has sent a warning message to her. That's why I'm going to her house. Cancel my all today's appointments.”
“Sure.” I hastily get up from my place and walk out of my office. I put the keys into my car and start driving.
The way she was talking to me on the phone, I sensed instantly that she was feeling a bit scared. Callan has already crossed his limits, but sending a warning message to Avery was the biggest mistake of his life. He will pay so badly for it.
After driving twenty minutes, I reach Avery house and park my car in front of her house. The rain is already bombarding rapidly. I take an umbrella with me and get out of my car. Then, I made my steps towards her house.
As soon as I reach her house, I press the doorbell. She opens the door rapidly, and snuggles into my chest, making me widen my eyes. My umbrella falls on the floor and I wrap my arms around her body gently. Her arms squeeze a fraction tighter as she breathes slowly, her body melting into my embrace like her every muscle loses its tension to the spring air. I close my eyes and start rubbing her back. Her shivering body calms down as her breathing becomes constant.
“Thank you so much for coming here.” She says, hugging me more tightly. "You don't know, but I was never this scared in my life like I was today."
“Shush! It's fine. I'm here. You don't need to be scared. I'll protect you.” Saying this, I gently lift her in my arms in bridal style, making her squeal. Then, I make my way inside her house, carrying her.
What I said was right! I'll protect her with my life even if my life would be in danger because she is my life and my reason to breathe, and my life is nothing without her.
I gently place her on a couch in the living room. Then, I sit beside her. She comes near me, making us touch each other slightly. I also feel our usual beautiful sparks whenever we touch each other. Her beautiful ocean blue eyes looking directly into my eyes, piercing my soul.
“How did that man look?” I ask suddenly, breaking this sexual tension that that was surely increasing between us.
“He said that his name is Adam. He was a tall man with blond hair. He was in a black three-piece suit and had a muscular body.” She says, sighing nervously.
“Did he try to do anything with you?”
“No… No… He didn't try anything. He didn't even touch me, but he said that the envelope was extremely confidential, and I should open it once he goes out of my house.”
“Can you show me the envelope?”
Her doddering forefinger raises a little, and it points on the table which was in front of us. I pick up the envelope carefully and take out the paper from inside it.
Avery was right. There is no sign of anything related to that anonymous person who sent this letter, but I'm sure that this person is Callan.
“Who are they?” She asks abruptly with her innocent and terrifying eyes.
“I think I know him-”
“—then, tell me who he is!” She cuts me off.
I sigh heavily.
“I'm sorry, Avery, but I can't. Your life will fall into more danger, and I can't risk it.”
“Then, tell me who are you?” Her sudden question about my identity makes me feverish. “ I mean, this can't be possible that you have so many enemies unless you are more than a businessman who is involved in some shady thing.”
She is really smart. I praise her keen observation, but I also need to tell her about me being a mafia leader. What if she decides to leave me? I also can't lie to her.
“Say something…” She says, moving closer to me with her curious eyes.
“I'm only a businessman, Avery. Nothing more.” I say, laughing a little as a few drops of sweat start dripping over my face.
“Don't lie. I can see that you are lying.” She frowns. “If you don't tell me, then you will never see yourself near me.”
Fuck! I can't control it more. This thread is iththreadinguse I want her near only me forever.
“Fine, But promise me that you won't react recklessly with me.”
“Ok, Fine. Now, spill!”
“I'm the leader of Italian Mafia, Mala Del Brenta.”
