Chapter 43.

"D'you ever miss them?" George asked looking at a picture of me, my mom and Phil.

"Every day of my life."

"It's tragic. How they went. Did you get on with your step father?"

"Phil was a great man. He loved my mom and me. He was just as kind as my real father."

Me and George were lying on my bed just talking. It was nice actually. I love George. He was always a listener. He was so passionate and insightful.

"How did your real father go?...if you don't mind me asking."

I swallowed and took a deep breath. I never talked about my real dad to anyone. It was always so hard for me to cope with it. Until now.

"My um...my real dad was killed while at work. He was a police officer and well, he was at the wrong place at the wrong time and...he was shot to death. By the time we got to the hospital, he was already dead. I never even got to say goodbye."

I felt the tears rolling down my cheeks as I spoke. My voice shaking. George wrapped his arms around me.

"He was just so happy that morning. He wanted to bring me to work with him. But my mom said no. She said I had to go to school. I wish I had gone with him...atleast I could have spent just a little bit more time...." I began to breakdown now. It was quiet as George held me, rubbing my back.

"I'm so sorry Lucy. I shouldn't 'ave brought it up."

"No George. I'm glad you did. I've never talked about it until now. I needed this. It's just so unfair how all my parents are gone. Taken from me. Now..."

"You have us. John, Paul, Stuart....me."

I looked at him as he wiped my tears away. "Don't ever leave me George...please."

"I won't Lucy. I promise."

I sniffled and closed my eyes. "Life isn"t very kind is it?"

"No. I'm afraid not love."

I sighed and nodded. "We should go back out."

"Yeah. Lucy?" He asked looking down.

"Yes?"

"Are ye still taking your medication?"

I stayed quiet and just nodded. He nodded in return.

"Does John know?"

"No." I whispered.

"Do they help?"

"Most of the time."

"Good. Don't stop taking them. We don't want to lose ye." He smiled kissing my cheek.

"That's good to know." I said, giving him a small smile.

Two Weeks later

Me and Stu sat in a music shop, overlooking guitars and different instruments as Paul, John, and George strummed a few chords with each one.

"Ye know Paul, we 'ave enough money to spend on one guitar and well, it being your birthday and all..." John said handing Paul a card.

"Aye I thought you lot forgot about my birthday but, ye sneaky devils knew along yeah?" He smiled and read the card we all signed giving our best wishes.

"We didn't want to rub it in now." George laughed.

"Thanks. To all of ye's. Me mates, Lucy.." He blushed kissing my cheek.

"I would suggest we throw a party but, we have to be on the road in half an hour." I said looking at the clock.

"Come on Paul pick one out. We don't 'ave all day." John smirked shoving Paul by the shoulder.

It was June Eighteenth and Paul was having his sixteenth birthday at another gig. We had a few days break at college and I took a few sick days off work. We were only going to be gone for one day but the pay was pretty nice. Of course the band wasn't going to pass up an offer like that.

Again, they didn't have a drummer so John managed to call in a friend of his to fill in for the night. He was going to meet us at the club. We couldn't afford a rental vehicle so my car was the only canidate for the time being.

"When we get there, there's a nice little lounge that serves a nice cuppa tea..."

"Christ George were supposed to be in a band and your off talkin about cozy lounges and tea." John said shaking his head, making Paul laugh.

"I went down one time with me mum, nice place it was. A bit posh but nice." George said looking a little hurt.

"That sounds nice George. I'd love for you to take me." I smiled looking at him in the rearview mirror. He gave me his famous smile as he looked out the window.

"So Stu, how's it feel to be goin on the road with us for the first time?" John asked lighting a cigarette. I motioned for him to roll the window down. He made a face.

"I dunno what to expect. Do you lot just perform and then go to bed or..."

"Pfft it's not all rainbows and sunshine out there mate. Sometimes we go out on these gigs, you'll either get a good crowd or a shite one. They can turn on you just like that." Paul snapped his fingers.

"Remember a few weeks ago George, that bloke tossed a bottle as us, sendin glass everywhere? Lucy 'ere spent the night tryin to remove small bits from me arm." John said taking a drag from his cig. I sighed.

"That bad it gets?" Stu said sounding a little nervous.

"It's not always like that. Most of em turn out good though. Atleast were getting paid." George said.

When we finally pulled up, it was two in the afternoon. We gathered our stuff and went inside.

"Oh yeah. This'll turn out nice." John nodded, flicking his smoke.

"So we just stay in a room upstairs or.."

"These clubs always have a room for the band or bands to stay in. If a band is staying for awhile, they usually find somewhere else to stay like a hotel. We can't afford one of those so we stay here." I smiled as we made our way upstairs.

"We hardly stay in the rooms cause were out doin sound check, set up, goin out to eat.."

"Partying, drinkin...shagging." John winked at me.

"That's John's favorite part." I giggled.

We got up to our rooms and figured out who was staying with who. We decided me, John and George will share one as Paul, Stu and the drummer share one. It worked out better this way.

"Hey Paul, meet me down in ten alright? There's a change I want to make with the set list." John yelled sticking his head out the door over to Paul. George was fixing his hair as I made a call.

"Who are ye calling love? Secret lover I don't know about?" John smiled sitting next to me and kissing my cheek. I laughed.

"Of course not. I got a letter from the magazine telling me they have some urgent news for the entire staff. I just want to see what it was."

"Ah boring work stuff, that's my que to go." John said getting up. I smiled and shook my head.

"Just go John. Go with Paul and let him suck you off." I teased.

"Sounds even better. Aye Paul come 'ere and suck me off yeah?" He yelled leaving the room.

"Fuck you Lennon!" Paul yelled. Me and George laughed.

I dialed and waited until my boss picked up.

"Hello?"

"Uh yes it's Lucy Daniels, I got a letter from work telling me..."

He sighed. "Yes miss Daniels...it's never easy to say this. We had to make some cuts this month and...well we can't afford to keep a few members any longer. Were letting you go."

I felt my heart sink.

"B...But I worked so hard and..."

"I know Lucy. Look you're a great worker and we acknowledge that. But we can't afford to keep you and many others. You're not the only one being let go."

I bit my lip and looked at George as he looked over at me.

"You can finish what you have and pick up your last check next week alright? Again I'm really sorry Lucy. It's been really great working with you."

And with that, he hung up. I felt terrible at this point. I put the phone down and just stared down at my feet.

"What's wrong?" George asked, breaking the silence.

"I think I just got fired." I said, still trying to take it all in.
