The Truth is Out
It was after midnight when Lonna and Suga got home. They opened the living room door to find Pamela sitting in the chair waiting. The look of anger was evident on her face as they walked closer to her. “We’re back.” Suga said.
“Do you…” Pamela was trying her best not to let her anger consume her as she continued to stare at the door instead of at the two people to the side of her. “Know what time it is. Where did you go? Lonna?”
Lonna closed her eyes. She wasn’t turning back, she had made her decision, but she was still scared. The anger of her mother made her slightly shake. “We went to visit dad’s grave. Because of the rain, the trains stopped running. So, we couldn’t come back.”
“Why didn’t you pick up the phone?” Pamela sneered.
“We went to a hotel.” Suga said. Pamela’s eyes went wide with shock as she felt a sick feeling hit her stomach.
She looked at him and Lonna and prayed silently that she would find some humor on their faces. Some clue that it was all a joke. “Is this true, Lonna?” Lonna bit her lip as she nodded her head. She couldn’t look her mother in the eyes, scared to see the disappointment.
To Suga’s surprise, Pamela stood up and slapped Lonna as hard as she could across the cheek. Suga could feel his heart break as Lonna whimpered in pain. “Auntie, if you want to hit someone, hit me.” He said as he stood protectively beside Lonna. Pamela, was not only mad at them, but at herself as she looked at her daughter cup her bright red cheek with her hand. “I fell for Lonna first.”
Pamela was finding it hard to control herself as she looked between them. “You’re about to become siblings. Don’t you know what you’re doing?!” She screamed in Suga’s face. Seeing her tears, Suga was on the verge of letting his own fall.
“Mom.” Lonna whimpered as she cried. “Even if you don’t forgive me, I still have to tell you, I like Yoongi.” Suga pitied her as she looked her mother in the eyes and told her the truth that she had been holding inside for too long.
Hearing Lonna say it, made it all too real to Pamela as she stood frozen, staring at her. “Auntie.” Suga said trying to get her to calm down was his only goal. “Lonna has been struggling with this for a long time, because she is always thinking of you. We’re selfish, but would you at least understand the process?” Suga watched as Pamela balled her hand into a fist and pushed her nails tightly into the flesh of her palm. “Your daughter, her concerns for you.”
Pamela couldn’t handle it any longer. To stand in front of them was only making her act in a way she never wanted to towards her only child. Lonna cried harder as her mother slowly turned her back to her. “I need time to think about this. Yoongi’s father will be home tomorrow. Tonight, I’m tired.” Suga held Lonna tightly trying to calm down her crying as she watched her mother walk upstairs.
Once he had changed and showered again, Suga sat on the edge of his bed and picked up his phone. Lonna was watching the rain silently fall as she sat on her windowsill. When her phone rang she quickly picked it up. “Hello?”
“Your face…does it hurt?” He asked.
“Not anymore.” Lonna said as she sighed. “I’m fine. Because I told mom everything that’s on my mind.”
“Lonna.” Suga’s voice sounded serious. “Even if they’re opposed to us, I’ll keep persuading them until the accept us.” Neither of them said anything more as they both hung up the phone at the same time.
That Morning…
Lonna came down the stairs to find her mother busily moving from the kitchen to the table. “Morning. You’re up early. Wash your face?” She said as Lonna noticed her avoiding any kind of eye contact. “Watch the pot for me. See if I shut off the gas.”
Lonna walked over to her and stood in front of her. Pamela stopped what she was doing, but still refused to look at her. “Mom, don’t be in denial. About yesterday, what are you thinking?” Lonna asked.
Pamela knew she couldn’t avoid it. So she gently grabbed Lonna’s arms and made her sit in the chair behind her. She sighed deeply as she sat and looked at her daughter for the first time since last night. “I think that, without me realizing it, my daughter has reached an age of where she falls in love with others. It’s just that the other person, is about to become my son.” She reached over and grabbed one of Lonna’s hands. “Lonna, I remember we said we would never keep secrets between us. And we never have, so…” Pamela started rubbing Lonna’s hand gently. “Whenever I think of you…holding such a big secret in yourself, you must have suffered. When I think of this, I feel so bad for you.” She sounded as if she was going to cry as her hand moved to caress Lonna’s cheek. “And, last night, how could I have slapped you?”
It pained Lonna to see her mother so sad. She cupped her hand over hers. “Mom, don’t say that. It’s my fault.”
Pamela smiled slightly as she grabbed her daughter’s hand and ran her finger over the small butterfly. “Did Yoongi get you this?”
Lonna nodded. “For my birthday.”
Pamela smiled at her. “He must cherish you very much.”
“Mom…”
“But…” Pamela said quickly interrupting her. “You can’t live together. Lovers can’t be like siblings, living under the same roof. Do you understand?”
This is what Lonna was dreading to hear. “What should I do?” She asked.
“We need to leave.” Suga stopped walking down the stairs. Her words made him worry, so he couldn’t help but listen to the rest of Lonna and Pamela’s conversation. “Since this is Yoongi and his dad’s house.”
Lonna felt her heart sink. “So…you’re not marrying uncle?” Because of me, mom’s happiness is shattered. Lonna thought as she watched her mother shake her head.
Pamela smiled brightly at Lonna. “Lonna, I like Mr. Min. So, even if we aren’t married, I can continue to love him. And he can love me, right?”
“Mom…” Lonna was relieved that her mother had found a solution.
“I think it is for the best.” Lonna quickly wrapped her arms around her and hugged her tight. I’m always the one being protected. Always the one being loved. I, alone, cannot give mom her happiness. Lonna thought as her mother hugged her back.
Once her mother broke the hug, she smiled at Lonna and rubbed the sides of her arms. “Okay, Time to wake up Yoongi for breakfast.” Seeing Lonna get up, Suga quickly made it look like he was just coming down the stairs to not get caught.
“I’m already awake and waiting for breakfast.” Suga said as he made it to the bottom of them stairs.
Pamela laughed as she looked over at him. “Yoongi! Seriously.”
“You’ve been eavesdropping?” Lonna asked seeing straight through his façade.
“No way.” Suga said faking like he was offended. “I wanted to come down, but I didn’t want to interrupt.” Lonna and Pamela both chuckled at him. Suga looked over at Pamela. “Auntie, thank you.” He said sincerely.
“Yoongi.” Pamela said giving him a serious look. “if you make Lonna cry, I’ll make you pay.” She said the last part cutely as she pointed her finger at him.
Suga’s eyes went wide before he finally let his gummy smile show. “Okay.”
As all three of them laughed the phone rang in the living room. “That is probably your father.” She said looking up at Suga. “I think we should inform the other involved party of our new developments and new decisions.” Lonna and Suga watched from the steps as she went and picked up the phone. “Hello?”
Suddenly, Pamela’s eyes rolled back, and she crashed to the floor. “Mom!” Lonna screamed as she ran over to her.
“Auntie!” Suga screamed as well as he rushed to Lonna’s side.
Lonna shook her mother trying to wake her, but she wouldn’t. “Mom!”
“Auntie, are you ok?” Suga asked as he tried to help Lonna get her up, but no matter how much they yelled, or shook her, Pamela’s eyes remained shut.
