Love and Plastic Bags
Suga tried to catch Seungwan before she fell, but she couldn’t reach his outstretched hand. She hit the water, making it splash around her. Suga didn’t think twice as he jumped in after her. Once getting her out of the cold water, he gentle helped her sit back on the rock she was resting on. She curled her arms around herself trying to stop the shaking. Wanting to say thank you, she lifted her head to look at Suga, who stood worriedly beside her.
She couldn’t make out his face. His features were blurry due to her poor vision. Suddenly, a flash of memory came to her mind as she looked at him confused. “Are you okay?” For now, she ignored the familiar feeling she had as Suga checked on her.
“My contacts fell out.” She answered. She couldn’t be sure of what she was seeing, but that didn’t make her heart slow down. Hearing her start to cough, Suga took his jacket off and wrapped it around her shoulders, so he could go search for her contacts in the water.
In trying to keep herself warm, Seungwan accidently grabbed the sleeve of the jacket and ran her hand over it. Her fingers grazed over the cuff and her heart pounded louder in her ears. She quickly reached in her pants pocket and pulled out the button she had found in the glasses store, that she had put on a chain. She held the cuff up and put the button over the loose threads. She looked from the button to the image of Suga, who was still searching in the water. A large smile stretched her lips.
Without even giving him a chance to turn back towards her all the way, Seungwan jumped up and wrapped her arms tightly around Suga’s neck. His eyes went wide, and his body tensed up.
Lonna’s POV
Lonna stopped dead in her tracks as she watched them. She felt like someone had ripped her heart out of her chest and crushed it. Seeing the happy smile on Seungwan’s face, made her mind run with many questions. “It’s you! I finally found you!” Lonna felt like there was water covering her eardrums. She heard the words, but she tried to convince herself it wasn’t real. “You’re the one I was looking for! Yoongi, I’m so happy!”
As Lonna stood there, Jisoo’s warning came back to her mind.Lonna, there’s one kind of rival that’s hardest to beat, and that is without you realizing it, she’s already between you two. And when you look at her innocent expression, you can’t condemn her. Lonna felt stupid, her world was crashing around her, and for once in her life she wasn’t sure what to do. She felt like this was her fault, and the rest of Jisoo’s warning told her she was right. I’m not trying to scare you, but my instincts tell me, don’t let Seungwan too close to Suga.Feeling horrible, Lonna walked away without saying a word.
Suga’s POV
Suga stood tense with his arms limp at his sides. “Can you let go of me now?” he asked.
Even though she didn’t want to, Seungwan granted his request. “Last time, in the traffic, when my glasses broke, you rescued me.” She said as her and Suga stared at each other. “I wanted to see you again.” Another smile tugged her lips. “I didn’t know you were dad’s arranged date for me. We’re really connected. We were destined to meet.”
Suga took a deep breath, as he licked his bottom lip and ran his fingers through his damp blonde hair. “I thought I made it very clear. It doesn’t matter if you’re the girl I scooped out of the road, or the girl the senile elders wanted me to meet. I’m absolutely not interested in you.”
Seungwan dropped her head in her hands. “I know I shouldn’t act one-sided, but because of you, my heart thumps hard for the first time.” Her eyes glittered with hope as she looked deeply into Suga’s eyes. “So if I try harder, you’ll get to know me, and then like me.”
Suga rolled his eyes before returning them back to her. His face was determined as he spoke. “Not possible.”
Unfortunately, his determination didn’t affect her. “It’s ok.” Seungwan’s voice sounded confident for the first time. “I don’t want to give up.” Suga broke the eye contact, feeling aggravated, and started looking around for any route to escape.
Lonna’s POV
Jisoo watched as Lonna walked over to the riverbank and sat down. She silently wondered why she seemed so withdrawn and out of it, but Keun-suk walking past her stopped her from asking. He walked in front of Lonna and crouched eye level with her. With having her head facing the ground she didn’t notice him in front of her. “Let me help you.” Keun-suk offered, but to his surprise she didn’t even react. She sat quietly still staring down. He studied her for a second. “Lonna!”
The scream of her name reached her through the fog of her many thoughts, making her eyes snap up to see who it was. “Keun-suk.” She exclaimed. “I didn’t catch what you said.” She tried to hide her embarrassment.
Keun-suk smiled at her kindly. “I said…I’ll help you.” The sound of a twig snapping made all their heads turn in that direction. Suga stood with a wet Seungwan behind him. He stared at Lonna and Keun-suk with an expression of rage on his face. Lonna didn’t keep the eye contact long, as she once again looked down. The many thoughts plagued her mind again. Jisoo cringed from the awkwardness of it all but was starting to put the picture together of why Lonna had been so depressed before.
Later that night, the team all gathered around the fire that Jisoo and Lonna had finally been able to build. Lonna sat away from them as she cooked some meat, and Suga sat behind her on one of the rocks. “Jhope is the weakest.” Jin said. “He couldn’t even handle a little training.” Everyone laughed as Jhope yelled in objection.
“Then I will treat everyone to chocolate.” Seungwan offered happily. She started passing around the small gold wrapped sweets.
“Seungwan, treating us to chocolate, so sweet.” Jhope said. After handing them all out, she looked over at Suga, who seemed to be in his own world. She smiled happily as her heart started to race.
Jisoo huffed in annoyance as she stared in Seungwan’s direction. “I hate the sight of her.” She said to RM who sat beside her. “Why do guys all prefer idiotic sweeties with no personality?” She went back to pushing the coals around in the fire that belong to her and RM.
“Not all guys are like that.” RM argued. “You girls are the same, only liking bad boys.”
Jisoo quickly got up and picked up a bottle, holding it out to him. “Are you complaining the BBQ has no flavor? If you want vinegar, then eat it.”
Author’s Note: This is another Taiwanese burn. When someone says eat vinegar, they are telling the person to be jealous. OK sorry to interrupt, continue.
RM smiled as he grabbed the bottle from her hands and stood up beside her. “I will give you half.” He looked overly proud at himself for not letting her words phase him.
“RM.” Jisoo gave him an angry glare. “What’s wrong with you today?” RM’s smile faded with her question. “Why’ve you been picking on me today?” He didn’t say anything as Jisoo stared at him. “Say something!” She yelled.
“I just think…” He spoke nervously. “If I had more individuality, and an attitude, then some things…might be different.” He sadly looked away from her.
Jisoo looked at the boy in front of her. She was a mix of annoyed and shocked. The idiot. So, he wanted to copy Suga. As Jisoo was lost in her thoughts, RM looked up to the night sky. A sudden flash of light raced across it. RM quickly wrapped his arm around Jisoo’s waist and pulled her close. “Look a falling star. Make a wish.” He closed his eyes tightly as Jisoo looked at him. She watched him mumble under his breath. Can’t even copy properly.
“Childish.” She said making RM open his eyes again.
“You’re right.” RM said, laughing slightly. “A cool guy would never make a wish on a star.
“What did you wish for?” Jisoo asked.
“It’s…”
“Forget it.” Jisoo said annoyed. “I don’t want to know.” She turned her back to him. RM rolled his eyes. Once again, he felt like he had failed.
Seeing the star, Lonna quickly jumped up and ran over to Suga. “Suga! There was a falling star, did you make a wish?” She asked excitedly.
“Boring.” Suga said. A frown took over Lonna’s features as she slightly turned from him and faced the ground once more. Suga smirked as he eased himself close to her. His lips were just inches from her neck, when Jin shoved a piece of chocolate in his path.
“Seungwan’s chocolates are really good.” Jin was confused as Suga grumpily sat back in his spot, and Lonna slowly walked away. “What’s with Lonna?” he asked, making Suga stare at him coldly. Noticing the anger on his face, Jin quickly left to join the others at the fire.
Lonna lazily kicked a rock on the riverbank as she stared silently over the water. Keun-suk couldn’t ignore the frown on her face as he went to walk past her, instead he walked up beside her. Once again she didn’t even react to his presence. “Lonna, what’s wrong?” He asked making Lonna turn to him. She gave him a small smile as she shook her head ‘no’. Keun-suk knew she was lying. “You know, a few days ago, when I first saw you at the school, I thought you hadn’t changed at all. Later, I discovered, you’ve actually changed a lot.”
“Really?” Lonna questioned.
“Because…” Keun-suk turned to look at her. He placed his finger under her chin to make her look up at him. “On your face now, you seem to have a very perplexed expression. You’ve never had it before. Maybe it’s because your life or your love life has experienced great changes.”
Lonna giggled. “To me, you haven’t changed at all. You’re still considerate and mature.” Keun-suk smiled wide as she talked. Lonna bit her bottom lip, in an attempt to control her emotions. “Not like…” Lonna didn’t want to finish her sentence. She pulled herself away from Keun-suk and walked around him to once again stare at the water.
Keun-suk refused to let her sulk again. He bent over and picked up a small plastic bag and held it out to her. “Do you still remember?” Lonna smiled as soon as she seen what he was offering her.
Lonna was giddy as she ran to open the front door. Keun-suk could hardly contain the smile on his own face as he held his hands behind his back and entered the house. “Who are you looking for?” Lonna asked.
“I’m looking for my student, Lonna.” Keun-suk answered willing to play along with her little game happily.
“Why are you looking for her?” Lonna giggled, happy that Keun-suk was following her lead.
“Because she told me, she had a test today. So, I thought she might need…” Keun-suk pulled his hands from behind his back and ran a finger over the tops of the bags. “Five plastic bags.”
“Wrong!” Lonna exclaimed as she pointed a finger in his direction. “Six.” They both laughed loudly.
Lonna laughed as the memory faded. “Of course, I remember. Dad asked you to be my math tutor. Whenever I had a major test, or I felt bad, you would let me…” Lonna grabbed one of the two bags from his hand, they both quickly blew in the opening to inflate them. After twisting the top to trap the air Lonna looked at Keun-suk. “1, 2, 3” Keun-suk hit the bottom of the inflated bag making it pop. At the same time, Lonna hit the bottom of hers on top of Keun-suk’s head. She laughed when it did nothing. “It didn’t pop.”
“You finally smiled.” Keun-suk said as he stared at her.
“I remember in the past, you were like a magician. Every time I had a problem, and I was with you, you’d just need a plastic bag to make it disappear.” Lonna said.
“If one isn’t enough, do you want another?” Lonna gave him a grateful look. “Your smile is more important than anything.” Lonna didn’t know why, but her smile faded.
Suga didn’t like the way they were staring at each other, as he watched them closely. Jisoo’s eyes wondered over everyone, before landing on RM. She bit her bottom lip to stop the small smile that tried to appear as she watched him fix their fire.
