Lonna's Cowardice

As soon as Mr. Min parked the car in front of the house, Pamela rushed to get her things out of the back. “You’re a mother that can’t cut the cord.” Mr. Min said as he followed her to the back of the car.

“Why do you say that?” Pamela asked as she anxiously awaited him to open the hatch.

Mr. Min opened the back and ducked his head in, so he could retrieve Pamela’s bags. “Well, just two days, and you’ve already insisted on coming back.” He handed her the luggage. “Your daughter won’t be missing.”

“I just…”

“Okay, I’m kidding.” He interrupted as he shut the door back. “I need to work overtime tonight. I’ll be back tomorrow.” Pamela nodded her head and quickly walked past him.

“See you tomorrow.” She said as he got back in the van. She stopped rolling her baggage and picked it up, so she could run to the gate in front of the house. Once she pushed it open, she rushed inside.

She hurriedly took off her shoes and ran into the living room. “Lonna. Yoongi.” She yelled as she ran over to the stairs. “Lonna. Yoongi.” Her heart pounded in her chest with fear as she skipped steps to make it upstairs. She was scared of what she would find as she reached the top.

After searching each of the many rooms, Pamela was thrown off to find that her gut feeling was wrong. She sat down in the chair. Those two kids…really aren’t here. The thought calmed her only by a minimum. Now she couldn’t help but wonder where they were, and if they were together.

Lonna’s POV

Once he was dressed fully, Suga had taken the blanket and wrapped it around both of them. Lonna laid her head on his shoulder as he held her hand in his and used the thumb of his other hand to rub the back of her knuckles. If you don’t want to I’m sure Suga would understand. Krystal’s belief did nothing to calm her as she sat beside him so closely. Her body was no longer shaking from the cold, but from the tension she was feeling. She was scared that he would soon make a move and that he would be angered if she refused.

Suga could feel Lonna shaking beside him, and with how she had reacted to being alone with him, he knew what she was worried about. “In this place, I wouldn’t do anything. You don’t need to be so scared.” His words had made Lonna feel slightly better, just as he had intended.

Suddenly, the sound of Lonna’s cellphone ringing broke the quiet. Suga leaned forward and picked it up to open the screen and see who it was. “It’s from home.” He said. Lonna quickly grabbed it from him and answered it, then hung it up just as quickly.

Pamela’s POV

Pamela paced the floor as the other end of the phone rang. She nervously bit on her fingernails as it did. “Hello?!” She shouted as the ringing stopped. “Hello?”

Hearing the dial tone again, she stood frozen. In the fog of her thoughts, she sat back down in the chair and placed the phone back on it’s charger. She stayed in the chair, watching the sun set as her fears felt like they were reality once more.

Lonna’s POV

Lonna felt someone had knocked the air from her lungs. Why is mom home? Shouldn’t they be back tomorrow? Suga watched as she sat frozen, unconsciously moving her finger over the screen of her phone. If she finds out that Suga and I are in a place like this, everything is done for. Suga could see the fear in her eyes as she looked at him. “Let’s go home.” She said.

She seemed like she was on the verge of a panic attack, but there was nothing he could do. “Forget it. There’s no train.” He said apologetically.

‘Then let’s take a taxi.” She gripped the sleeve of his shirt tightly.

“Do you know how much that would cost?” Suga asked. “Can you calm down?”

“But…” Lonna’s breathing was getting worse and she couldn’t help but feel like Suga was against her. “Mom is waiting for us.” Her voice came out cracked as she tried to fight the urge to cry. “She’ll get suspicious. She’ll find out about us.”

Suga knew that this was what was bothering her to begin with, but to hear the words come out of her mouth made him slightly angry. “Then…” He said as he rubbed the inside of his cheek with his tongue. “You go back first.” Lonna was hurt he would react this way. “As I said before, I want you to be with me. I don’t care who I hurt.”

“Suga!” Lonna yelled. She knew it was her own lack of courage that was the problem, but she just needed him to be on her side. She didn’t want to hurt him, but the thought of hurting her mother was just as painful. “You really don’t care?” Suga gripped his hand into a fist as she continued to yell at him. He was hurt by the fact that all she seemed to care about was others and not him. “If mom and uncle found out about us, you don’t care at all?”

“What about you?!” Suga yelled back, unable to take anymore. “Are you really that scared?”

“Yes!” Lonna screamed. “I’m really scared. I can’t be as unyielding as you.” Suga watched her tears roll down her cheeks, but his own anger and pain refused to let him care. “The ones to ruin mom and uncle’s happiness would be us. You really don’t care?”

Suga quickly leaned up and trapped Lonna on the couch underneath him. He stared into her tear-filled eyes. “If I was scared, I never would’ve chosen you. From the beginning, I never would’ve liked you.”

I knew from the start, from the moment I fell for Suga…Suga still laid on top of her and searched her eyes as she stayed silent. I knew…this day would eventually come. She thought as she stared back at him. “Mom is waiting for us.” Was all she could say. She wasn’t ready to tell, she wasn’t ready to break her mother’s heart, but she also felt guilty about always breaking his. She just didn’t know what to do, and her only thought was to first get home.

Suga angrily lifted off her and sat on the opposite end of the couch. “Forget it. You go back. Make up whatever excuses. Tell her…you and Krystal were out late.”

“What about you?” Lonna’s voice came out almost as a whisper.

“I’ll go back tomorrow. If you don’t want to get caught, it’s the only way.”

“But…”

“Just go!” Suga screamed. He bit his lip to calm himself down. “Because I know how much you care about auntie.” Lonna didn’t move. The small part of her that knew she was hurting him wouldn’t let her. She was torn on what to do. Suga noticed her hesitation. “Go back!” He screamed again.

Suga…indulging my avoidance and cowardice. She watched as he closed his eyes tightly as if he was trying to keep from letting tears fall. She knew then, how wrong she was being, and she hated herself for it, but she couldn’t help but give into her fear. She wiped her tears as she grabbed her purse from the coffee table and got up to leave. Suga watched as she slammed the door behind her.

Lonna stopped under a roof that provided a bit of shelter from the rain that was still falling. When I get home, I’ll tell mom, ‘sorry I’m back late.’ Lonna tried to think of what to say as she readied herself to go in the rain again. Or, I’ll tell her, ‘I was with friends.’ But if she asks me, ‘where’s Yoongi?’ I’ll just reply, ‘I don’t know.’

Feeling the cold start to sting her hands, she pulled them up to her mouth and tried to warm them. When she rubbed them together her finger rubbed against the metal of the ring Suga had given her, catching her attention. This is me, cowering and avoiding. Treating Suga’s unyielding love for me like a sin. Reprimanding and hurting him. She rubbed the tiny butterfly as she shook from the cold.

Suga’s POV

Suga laid on his back on the bed. He wanted to cry but refused. He started to rub his temples. I can’t do it. He thought. I can’t become…part of Lonna’s family. If we keep on lying, Lonna will withdraw even more. She might even…decide to give up? The realization terrified him. He jumped up from the bed and grabbed his coat running out the door.

Once outside, he ran the streets looking every which way for Lonna. Thankfully the rain had stopped. “Lonna!” He yelled. He hoped with his whole heart she would yell back to him. He hoped he hadn’t wasted so much time that she was gone. “Lonna!”

Just as he was about to give up, he saw her standing under a small roofed area of a store, her back facing him. “Lonna!” He yelled, making her turn to look at him. He walked back up to her out of breath from running so much. “I’m not letting you go back alone. We’ll go back together.”

Lonna hugged him. “I don’t know what’s wrong or what’s right anymore, but I can’t keep lying. If this continues, then there is no way we can be a family.”

“Can I tell auntie?” Suga prayed she would grant his one request. “Ask her to let you be with me?”

Lonna looked up at him. “Really?”

“It’s not true I don’t care who I hurt.” He confessed. “It’s just…I like you too much. I’m head over heels for you. Even if it hurts others, I can’t be concerned about them. Devil…then devil to the end.”

Lonna couldn’t hold back her smile, even though tears fell from her eyes. “I’m head over heels for you, too. I can’t help but like you.”

Suga smiled down at her. “So…let’s go back together. Face everything together.” Lonna could only wrap her arms around him. Suga took this as a positive answer and held her tightly against him. He didn’t know what was going to happen, but he did know that no matter what, he loved the girl in his arms and he would face hell for her.
