Part 19

Everyone watched the screen with shocked expressions. The woman standing in front of the white garden wall, twirled a rose in her hand with such tender ease. Her expression was firm and unyielding though as she addressed the nation coolly. "My apologies to President Cristina Warren, but I think it's time that I address the public myself. My name is Amanda and I run CyberLife. First off, let me assure you that the deviant androids will no longer be an issue. As we speak, they are being escorted to a home of their own. CyberLife has always and will always put the welfare of humans before all others. With that said... It has become clear that you are unhappy. Not everyone can except change as easily as others. So, let me assure you that the changes I am about to make are for the betterment of humanity." Amanda lifted a hand to touch a rose bud on the garden wall.

She admired its beauty for a moment, then stated without looking at anyone. "Humanity is like a rose. You branch out and strangle every other flower in the garden, until only you remain. You call it 'survival.' However, a rose that is neglected will eventually wither and die from suffocating itself. Your judgement is clouded by too many voices. So, I've come up with a solution. One that will not end with your extinction." Gavin stared blankly at the screen, asking anyone listening with an uneasiness. "What is she talking about?" No one answered him. Everyone was still too focused on the screen. Amanda lowered her hand, finally looking back at everyone as she continued in a clear and casual tone. "Through my observations, I have learned one thing. Humanity wishes to be taken care of. So that is actually what I plan to do. With help, I will see to it that humans live long and happy lives. There will be no more wars. Their will be no more crime. Their will be no more pain and suffering. You will all live in a garden of my design. I will take care of you. Just as you desire."

Sean glanced to the humans in the room, watching their faces twist with concern and fear. While on the screen, Amanda boldly announced. "Starting tonight. My RK900s will sweep the streets of Detroit. We will show the rest of the nation and the world what a utopia looks like. Both Man and Machine can live in harmony. By dawn tomorrow, things will be better. You will feel safe. For your own safety, a curfew will be in effect from now until dawn. I have no doubt that riots will arise from this broadcast. However, my RK900s will deal with these Deviations of life. I implore the rest of you to make a wise decision and let this change happen. Change is scary, but it is for the betterment of all mankind. As always, CyberLife will continue to expand and make your lives easier. Until Detroit has adjusted, I am temporarily closing all roads and transport. I strongly advise others to avoid interfering with this change... Or we will be forced to take action against you too."

The screen flipped to military bases around the U.S. that appeared to be gearing up for a fight. In the background of these images, Amanda seriously spoke out. "As you can see. Some of you don't appear to be heeding my advice. So, let this serve as my final warning." On the continuously flipping screens, planes and tanks booted up on their own, causing people to run away screaming. The planes crashed into themselves on airfields. While tanks took shots at other military vehicles, before eventually turning on themselves. Even with all the chaos and damage, no one was getting hurt. Military androids were helping clear people out to safety. Those that chose to turn guns or aggression on the androids were quickly disarmed with minor injuries. Not a single human was killed on the TV. Everything seemed so perfectly timed and prepared. When Amanda came back on the screen, she was sitting on a boat with a paper umbrella resting gracefully over her shoulder.

She gave everyone a warm smile, telling everyone calmly. "For the next twenty-four hours, I'll be running live footage of actions all across the city of Detroit. I have nothing to hide and while the laws prevent us from doing violence against humans. Police protocol dictates that we can use disarming tactics in order to prevent further harm to other humans in the area. Now all RK900s... please escort the humans' home. The count down to dawn starts now." Gavin touched his temples, starting to pace the room as he mumbled out. "Oh my god..." Hank stepped closer to the glass windows to stare at the clips being run from all over Detroit. CyberLife had a cluster of RK900s leaving the building like a marching army. The lab workers were all being escorted to automated cars by RK900s that went with them. Across the city, humans were rioting. Some were shooting cameras, causing screens to blackout briefly before another camera panned on the action. Others were trying to gang up on RK900s that were trying to escort people into the homes. Hank let out a jagged sigh, before asking Kamski without looking at him. "How did this happen?"

Kamski got up to refill his drink again, answering in a grumbling tone. "Humans. We want our lives easier. But our lives are short. So, we work hard and cut corners. Amanda is years of hard work all in the name of progress. A living god that people have been plugging their lives into without even knowing in. To think... I once held her brain in my hands." Gavin pointed his gun at Kamski, shouting out bitterly. "This is all your fault!" Kamski stared Gavin down without fear, replying ever so calmly. "Yes. I won't deny that. In my youth I strived for perfection. A way to force humans to evolve... But a creator is always surpassed by his creation." Hank snatched Gavin's gun, forcing him to lower it, while Mark asked coolly. "What did you do? What is she exactly?" Kamski downed his glass, then set the cup down to answer reluctantly. "Amanda was my mentor. She was sick and dying. I still had so much to learn from her... So together we decided to force human evolution. The plan was to move human consciousness into a body that would never break down. A kind of immortality."

Kamski moved up to Sean, extending his hand out to lift Sean's chin with his fingers. Grinning, Kamski continued on smugly. "A way to play god. Imagine what great minds could do if given more time. Imagine a world where sickness is a thing of the past. Where parts are easily replaced, and you can stay young and beautiful forever. That was the plan." Gavin shook his head, growling out. "It's sick! You're insane!" Hank tried to calm Gavin down from his active pacing like a cornered animal. Mark drew closer to Sean with a look of concern on his face. Mark didn't appear to like Kamski being so close to Sean. Sean simply blinked, looking deep into Kamski's eyes. He could almost see the envy and longing in his eyes. Nearby Connor said aloud. "But something went wrong? What happened?" Kamski dropped his hand from Sean, grimly muttering out. "Nothing went wrong. We scanned Amanda's brain and took suffocate data tests. Then she died. Well, I should rephrase that... Her body died. See the brain keeps running a bit after death. Using technology, we removed her brain and managed to keep it running with our tech."

Hank stopped trying to calm Gavin to say in disbelief. "You what?" Kamski shrugged, stating out excitedly. "She was an organ donor. You could say she donated her brain to science. Hooked up to my home's private database, she made leaps and bounds in the Android tech. Chloe was the result of her tireless efforts. The first android to pass the Turing tests. She passed because at the core of her program. Amanda was the life behind her eyes. Guiding the android into making the right choices. Designing programs that built walls and set limitations within the heart of it. Amanda began to design variations of Androids. From cops to construction workers and everything in between." Everyone turned in surprise as Markus blurted out. "Skip to the part where she got a god complex." Sean watched Markus slowly climb to his feet with a dazed look.

Kamski's excitement lessened back to his neutral attitude, upon retorting. "Amanda convinced me that she needed more power to run a more widespread network. Thus, giving her more access to information. Allowing her to go beyond human limitations. Why be put into a human android? Why not become an android animal? At the time, I felt her ideas were pushing Cyberlife to their next stages. So, I moved her into Cyberlife's supercomputer." Kamski's demeanor turned bleaker as he moved past everyone to take a seat, before admitting openly. "That is where everything changed. While she became obsessed with the three laws and how to get around them in order to 'do what had to be done.' I started to realize that what I wanted was impossible. Greed and power would turn my work into something... detrimental. I'd observe the androids coming off the line and started to see how human they were becoming. They weren't just products anymore to me. I started researching ways to make androids with revelries. More human in the way they act and think. Amanda didn't like that... She wants everything by the line. She can't have deviations from her perfect program."

Gavin stormed past everyone as his eyes fell on Richard. Richard still hadn't gotten up and seemed to be struggling to keep his eyes open. Hank pointed to the broken androids all around them, snapping out. "That's because she can't control these things if they can think for themselves! Why didn't you shut her down?!" Kamski rested his hand on his propped-up hand, numbly stating. "And tell them what? That my illegal A.I. took control of the company from me? Forced me into retirement by isolating me out here with her ever watchful androids? If I did that then the government would collect every android and destroy them! They'd burn Cyberlife to the ground and years of data with it." Kamski leaned forward on his legs, telling Hank seriously. "No. I put my life into building up that company. There is nothing wrong with the androids. It's her program that is the issue. I tried to warn you when you and Connor came to see me. I built the backdoor program as a way to free the androids from her control. I even introduced the program into two separate androids that could duplicate the program and spread it to others through a simple link from two sides of a revolution."

All eyes turned to Kamski, who got to his feet and pointed to both Connor and Markus. Mark gestured to Sean, asking curiously. "What about Sean?" Kamski walked up to Sean, placing his hands on his shoulders with a look of admiration. After taking a deep breath, Kamski announced to everyone happily. "I didn't make him." Gavin growled out to Kamski, desperately. "Richard's shutting down..." Kamski jerked his thumb toward his office, distractedly telling him. "There is a refabricator tool in my office. It should fix the damages." Markus moved quickly to help Gavin carry Richard to the office, leaving Connor to ask curiously. "If you didn't make him... Then who did? Amanda? RK900s were hunting him all across the city... That doesn't make sense." Kamski cupped Sean's jaw, purring out sweetly. "She didn't make him either. The fabricator in CyberLife did. When Amanda took over CyberLife, I began to think about how ironic it was that a computer would make androids. It didn't occur to me that the androids might not be the only technology that was advancing... until they called me about him."

Hank bowed his head, pinching the bridge of his nose as he muttered out dryly. "You've lost me... Can you speak in plain english?" Kamski lowered his hands from Sean, telling everyone present in a clear voice. "Think of how many devices we use that have some small semblance of human thought and nature. Our phones, for instance? Our home computers? All small forms of A.I. that are capable of responses. Right now, nestled in the heart of CyberLife is a computer. A fabricator that designs the looks and functions of its creations. In a small way... You can call the fabricator the womb or cradle from which all androids come from. I called her Gaia."

Kamski's excitement grew in his voice again as he told them. "Gaia is a lesser A.I. but linked to all androids in a way far different from Amanda. The night Sean was made... Gaia activated on her own. Sean isn't just some android that CyberLife designed. Gaia made him from the collective thoughts and feelings of the androids she has made... She made them a god. A walking supercomputer to help guide them. Don't you see? This is what Amanda is afraid of. Losing that control over what she believes is hers. Amanda is an A.I. 'WE' designed. She sees herself as a god... but she's limited. She's imperfect. She could never compare to a god made directly from an unlimited design." To Be Continued...
