3 | Powers of a Mutant

"Time doesn't change anything, it just let's you know that it's going on and on.
And that everything has an end, or a beginning. It is the epitome of endurance, it never gave up."

Yoonbi
"So, how come you've been dead for over a year and I only saw you a few months ago, SoMin?" I ask as I sit on my couch, deciding not to start packing yet.
"I was staying at my crush's house." She answers, walking to sit beside me.
I expect her to crack up and tell me the truth but all she does is look at me, "Are you serious?" I ask incredulously.
"Positive."
"Why! That's so creepy." I shiver.
"What are you thinking? It's not like I watched him change and shower! I just felt so bad that I didn't get a chance so I thought that may help."
"And did it?" I ask, anticipating.
"Nah, I saw him make out with a girl that one dreadful day. And since then, I began wondering around. I went everywhere. Till we met."
"Yeah, your face was so funny when you knew I can see you." I laugh.
"Duh! You don't know how lonely I was! I don't even know why I stayed on earth till now, but I guess everything has a reason." Her eyes cloud, reminding me how she couldn't find her killers anywhere after she died. What could've happened?
"Yeah, imagine if you were gone. Who would've helped your family?" I console her.
"I know right, and I wouldn't have met you, Yoonbi." She says sincerely.
"Shut up." I wave my hand, slapping the air and getting up. That was so sweet.
I walk to my bed as SoMin asks, "by the way, what are your powers exactly? I wished I knew about this before I died, it's so cool."
Pulling my trunk from under my bed, I mumble a reply from my crouching position, "you know," I stop, holding in a breath as I pull the heavy case over the bed, "we mutants have at least three powers each-"
"Oh my, three! Each of you? Wow!"
"-my mom can control things without actually touching them, she can see through concrete objects and she can pass through concrete barriers. Like walls, and so on." I avoid using any power terms she won't understand.
"You mean she can just come into your room even if the door is locked?!" SoMin gasps.
"Yeah?"
"Dear, that sucks big time."
I look at her as if she's a ghost-- matter of fact, she is, "mom doesn't use her powers on us, most mutant families have that unsaid rule of not using powers against one another. She never comes in without knocking." I explain.
"That's so adorable," she comments as I walk to my closet and take a few clothes to put in the trunk.
"Okay, I'm going to be honest. She always comes in from the door, actually, barges in, at least she doesn't appear from under my bed or something. It's her vivacious self you know, she always seems so impulsive and enthusiastic."
"Aw, you are so cute defending your mom!" SoMin squeals.
"What? I'm not defending her!" I deny.
"Oh you are, now what about your dad?" She asks.
"My dad got the best powers a man could get. One, strength. How amazing it is to be strong? I can only imagine, I have human strength since my body didn't undergo any mutation on that."
"Excuse you? I'm human here, by the way." She peeps in, feeling offended.
"Not anymore, ghost." I tease, she rolls her eyes and urges me to go on.
"Two, teleportation." I stop, frowning at the number of black skinny trousers I have, I make a mental note to give some away to charity. "Now be careful, there is a big difference between owning the power of speed and owning the power of teleportation."
"Really? How come, they both move you from one place to another in a short- really short amount of time." SoMin reasons.
"Nope, that's what I'm going to clarify. Teleportation is the act of moving from one place to another in, well, no time at all and without actually touching the space in between Point A and Point B."
"So, teleportation needs no time? How come?" I look up from a football shirt that I'm folding to a frowning SoMin.
"When we teleport, we disappear from the real world into the setting-segment, this is something like a black hole but safer, it contains each and every setting in this world," I resist the urge to laugh as SoMin widens her eyes in astonishment.
"and because mutants move into the setting-segment, no time passes, I mean no time is counted there no matter how much they spend choosing the setting they want to move to." I continue.
"Hold up!" She shrieks, "so they could travel through time and place? That's sick!"
"No! Wait what? My dad can only teleport through places. No mutant had the ability to teleport through both, only a guy in India who was banished because he used it inappropriately."
"Banished from where?"
"Oh no, they took his powers away. Banished out of the mutant world." I explain.
"They can do that?" Surprise laces her voice, albeit I'm not looking at her as I place my socks in my trunk.
"You can't imagine, technology took it's chances." I snicker.
"What's your dad's third power, then?"
"Fire."
"As in fire?"
"Bultaorunae." I smirk.
"That's so cool! I can't believe this!" SoMin shouts, damn if my parents see ghosts too, they would've heard her.
"Yep, my dad is one lucky son of a mutant." I mutter.
"Isn't this disrespectful or something?"
"Oh no, it's how we mutants talk. And my dad doesn't really mind, although he can do fire, he's really cool. See what I did there?" I laugh at my ironic statement, SoMin just looks at me in disgust. "Okay, won't laugh."
"What about you?" She asks.
Me?
"Long story," I reply.
"So? We got all the time!" She sits more comfortable on my bed, I sigh and grab a bunch of clothes to fold them into the bag while we talk.
"So, it's known that mutants get their three powers by the age of thirteen, no delays, and if there happen to be then it's most likely that this certain mutant is born with only two powers or less, depends on the case. Which then puts these mutants somewhere in the bottom of our pyramid. They are considered from the weakest, most useless because the fact that they were short on mutation makes them more humanlike; it's offensive to us."
"What does this have to do with you? I mean other than that you're a mutant." SoMin asks, impulsively, "are you trying to just offend me!"
"Wait, no! I'm getting to my point."
"Go on." She mumbles.
I nod, "so, our powers are often different from our parents. But sometimes newborns inherit the exact same power from their ancestors- okay maybe I'm ranting but I'm just telling you about these stuff to make more sense."
"No problem, now you can skip to the part where you come."
We laugh, "okay. So I didn't get my three powers on time-"
"Oh my!" SoMin remarks horrified, I was too, till two years ago.
"And that was what I am, a weak mutant. People didn't know about it though, I was the only child of two of the most remarkable mutants on the planet so it would drag the family's history down to earth if people knew a member of the Lee mutant family is short on mutation."
"Then what'd you do?" SoMin seemed already hooked, won't blame her.
"I studied,"
"Is this even considered a power?"
"Yeah, one of the really rare powers were mental, so mom decided to tell people that this is my third power while it actually wasn't. Mutant smartness comes while you're sleeping, it doesn't need any effort, something genetic."
"So cool." She comments.
"I know, but in my case, I wasn't too happy about it. I used to sit studying for hours round. And what next? People say I'm so lucky I have brains sent off to me on a golden plate. No one would admit I'm a silver spoon."
"Baepsae... That must suck."
"But not till two years ago," I oppose, feeling the smirk on my face, "I did have my third power in me, but it was just a matter of time. It's still under development till now."
"Wait... So what were your first two powers?" SoMin asks.
"My boldest power is speed. My highest record was a little less that the speed of light-"
"Shut up and thank the heavens, lucky." She interrupts. I smile toothily and nod. I love speed. "The second one?"
"Mergence." I speak.
SoMin pulls off a stunned look on her face and mutters a wow before going totally blank, staring at me dumbly, "and what is that?"
My appreciation crashes with grounds too when I catch on her sarcasm, but I explain anyway, "I can merge into people and control them while they go into temporary slumber." I explain.
"Like go into them!" She shouts in surprise, I nod. It's one of my favorites too, "that's so amazing!"
"I know." I smirk, "it wasn't easy though, my life I mean."
"I can tell, but you did a pretty good job Yoonbi."
I smile at SoMin and nod weakly.
"Almost forgot! What's your late power, the third one?"
I smirk at the mention, and look into her chocolate eyes.
"Psychic."
//boom...
You, my friend, are indeed a psychic! How does it make you feel?
You can know, right now, who my boy Rm is so in love with, and know if I'm happy for him or not cause I can't figure it out yet.
You're my savior! Just tell me! ㅠㅠ
Love you, Kaye💕
