Chapter 10: Fever
October 24, 2038
The first day after the break-in Percy was fine, Lucas had helped him clean out the cut on his arm and his bruised ribs were resting and being iced frequently.
The second night though, Percy fell asleep with a fever and a worried Lucas watching over him, his red LED light showing his concern for he felt for his friend.
Because after he became alive, like Simon and Josh, Percy asked Lucas if he wanted to stay around or go follow Simon and Josh. Lucas chose to stay with Percy, he knew his friend would never turn on him. Especially as he saw the side-note for deviants that were beside Percy's name.
He had yet to tell Percy about it, mostly because Percy had started feeling ill and it never seemed like the right time.
As Lucas gazed at his friend who was starting to shiver in bed even though he had blankets covering him, he debated on what he wanted to do.
Markus entered his mind, and with some hesitation, he reached out through the computer connection that all androids seem to possess.
He didn't know if it would work between deviant and non-deviant, or even deviant and deviant for that matter, but he tried and was surprised when he was granted access.
"Yes?" Markus smooth voice asked over the connection.
"Markus, this is Lucas. I was wondering if you had any suggestions about taking care of a fever. Percy currently has one,"
Markus' side of the connection was silent for a few moments before his concern leaked over the connection. "Make sure he gets rest and hydration. Do you have any idea how Percy might've gotten sick?"
"There was a break-in yesterday and Percy got scrapped a bit with a crowbar. He was cut on his left arm and has bruised ribs. He did not take my suggestion for a hospital and instead dealt with each with cleaning the wound, wrapping it, and then rest." Lucas responded trying to hide the overwhelming concern that he was starting to feel, uncertain of how Markus' reaction would be if he told the android that he was feeling emotions.
"Alright, do me a favor, peel back the bandages on his arm and describe to me what the wound looks like." Markus said calmly as he relayed back to Carl what happened to Percy.
The old man was concerned but knew that Markus had it under control. Because even if he wasn't a paramedic android, he certainly had enough medical assistance in his programming to know a lot about the human body and the diseases, which included infections.
Lucas, knowing best to listen to Markus, pulled the bandage away from the wound and looked at it critically. "The wound seems to be swelling slightly and has some redness around the sight. I would even say that it may just be a bit higher temperature than the rest of Percy's body," Lucas replied dutifully as he scanned the wound.
His biocomponents located near the human stomach seemed to twist and feel unpleasant for the recently alive android. He wondered if this was the anxiety that most humans might feel.
"Sounds like the wound got infected. I suggest getting him to the hospital as they would have proper treatment for the wound. Especially if it was a crowbar you mentioned, do you know the last time Percy had a tetanus shot? He may need one in case the crowbar was used in unpleasant environments."
Lucas paused and stared at Percy for a few seconds, his optical units scanning Percy and with the given access he had from Elijah, started looking through his medical files. "He is in need of a tetanus shot, should I call the ambulance and explain the situation?" Lucas asked as he wrapped the wound on Percy's arm back up.
"Yeah, I'll tell Carl and he will tell Elijah. We'll meet you there so we can get an update," Markus replied and both androids cut the connection between them at the same time.
Lucas' LED instantly flashing yellow as he called the closest hospital and explained the problem, of the possible infection Percy may have and how he may need a tetanus shot due to the crowbar.
Quickly, the ambulance arrived and Percy willingly went with them, most because he was a bit loopy and out of it from the fever. Lucas was allowed to ride with them to the hospital, especially as he explained that Percy was his master and that he was to accompany him wherever he went.
While a bit of a stretch, as Percy never actually told Lucas to always accompany him he just did it, Lucas was in the ambulance keeping out of the paramedics way as they examined Percy, the wound, and marked down anything the staff at the hospital may need.
The ride seemed longer to Lucas, as his optics kept scanning over Percy and noting any duress that his face showed. Each shiver made the knot in Lucas' stomach twist and he felt something similar to a dark cloud race over his mind.
Rationally, he knew nothing serious was urgently wrong with Percy. They have caught the infection early and the paramedics seemed to easily know what they were doing, but Lucas couldn't help how tight his stomach was feeling or how his LED has yet to change from Red as his Level of Stress was just above that for a red LED.
Lucas watched silently as the ambulance arrived to the hospital and ushered Percy to the nearest room so the doctor's could look at him.
Meanwhile, Lucas told the receptionist with a blank voice that he was to always be beside his master. After a few words, the receptionist hesitantly let Lucas into the room where Percy was being kept.
Entering, he noticed a doctor wearing the stereotypical white coat and seemed to be taping the wound on Percy's arm with medical tape.
Silently, Lucas moved to the corner of the room and watched everything the doctor was doing, noting it and storing them in his files in case they were needed at a later time.
The Doctor seemed to finally notice him after having taped the last piece of the wound and started to talk, as if he knew Lucas was listening.
"Percy will be fine, we're giving his some antibiotics to fight the infection. When he wakes up, which will be in roughly eight hours, we'll observe him for the infection getting more severe. But I reckon that he should be fine, he will need to take oral medication for two weeks. He probably won't need them after one week as long as his symptoms disappear. We'll give you a list to look for when we release him assuming you're going to be his primary caretaker?"
"That would be a correct assumption," Lucas intoned politely, silently he was thankful the Doctor was helpful.
The Doctor nodded and seemed to write something on Percy's chart, which Lucas noticed was: Android will be primary caretaker, and then listed Lucas' model type that was printed on his shirt.
"What else will be needed other than the oral medication?" Lucas asked, watching the Doctor for any signs that his questions would be out of the ordinary. Most androids wouldn't ask questions, but Lucas hoped he was able to play it off as being a caretaker for his master.
"We'll thorough cleaning of the wounds and redressing as well, making sure the sight stays clean will be important. I would also say that for the next few days, make sure the wound stays dry. If the wound starts bleeding and doesn't clot, call us right away. If he still has the infection after the two week period calls me and we're see about fixing that problem. Any other questions you can ask one of the nurses and they will supply you with anything you need."
Lucas nodded his head and watched the Doctor leave quickly after. Standing vigilantly over Percy, Lucas watched for any signs of danger.
The only other time the door was opened was when Carl, Elijah, and Markus entered the room.
"Hello, Lucas," Carl said kindly as Markus wheeled him in. Elijah seemed to ignore everyone in the room as he went to Percy's bed and quickly looked at him with his own signs.
"Hello, Carl. Markus," Lucas replied kindly back as tension left his shoulder slowly. With Percy's friends here, he knew he was in good hands.
"Did the Doctor tell you how to care for Percy?" Elijah asked as he sat beside his friend.
"He has," Lucas confirmed as Markus joined him in the corner, out of their humans way.
Elijah nodded thoughtfully before seeming to realize something. "Has anyone told his family?"
Lucas blinked, surprised Elijah's mind went that pathway before shaking his head. "When we first cleaned his wound, Percy asked me not to inform his family of what occurred. He did not wish to worry them while they are still grieving over his lost step-father."
Elijah pursed his lips and seemed to fidget with his phone for a few second. "What do you think, Carl?" Elijah asked uncertainty.
Carl paused as he read the chart beside Percy's bed, while he might not know everything it said personally, he had called over Markus to read over it and tell him if the results were good or not.
"I think," Carl started slowly, "that if someone in my family was hurt, I would want to know about it. Even through grief."
Elijah pursed his lips before nodding. "Didn't Percy mention they went back up to New York for a few weeks because Paul's family requested them up there? Would we really want to bother them for something that should clear up in the first week?"
This time Carl pursed his lips. He remembers seeing Percy's mom once, after Paul's death. When he went to visit Percy in his apartment to tell him his condolences and some information he wanted regarding places he knew was abandoned. The dark circles under Sally's eyes and the obvious tear tracks were still fresh in his mind.
Even though she tried to smile at him, he could tell there was grief that filled her body. He couldn't imagine what she was going though, especially as Percy tried to keep his past tightly wrapped up. All he knew was that before Paul, there had been another stepfather that wasn't the best, and that his father was not in the picture.
"She's going through a hard time, we'll let Percy decide when he wakes up I suppose. Maybe he'll tell her if they come back," Carl said slowly, indecisive about if that was the correct way to go about it, but in the end, Percy didn't originally want his mother to know, so he would respect those wishes.
Elijah nodded, and silently, the four in the room, two humans and two androids, waited for their friend to wake up and eventually recover from his infection.
