Chapter 9: Sometimes silence is the best way to converse with

❀~~~~❀~~~~❀~~~~❀

Ⓣhe small male had retrieved his backpack and some books to get some homework done, and then as slowly as he could, found the detention room again. When he arrived, he peeked through the small glass he barely reached with his height, and surely enough, Chanyeol was already sitting there with his head resting on the table.

When Baekhyun entered the room, he quietly sat in the front, avoiding looking in Chanyeol's direction. However, after a little while, the elder student heard some movements from behind him, and before he had the time to glance over his shoulder, Chanyeol had moved from his seat to sit beside the senior student.

"Are you avoiding me now?" he asked with his dark voice.

Baekhyun didn't even look at him. "It was you who had a sudden outburst and walked away from me, not the other way around," he said nonchalantly.

"Yeah, I did," the younger said. "Baek, look at me." As Baekhyun still refused to glance at him, Chanyeol reached out his hand and softly grabbed his chin and turned his head towards him gently. "I'm sorry."

Baekhyun could tell he meant it. Chanyeol had never apologised before, not even to people he had punched or caused troubles with. He hadn't apologised to Baekhyun before either - not until now that was. And it wasn't a big deal either; Baekhyun figured he just hit a nerve, and he wasn't sincerely mad at him, just irritated by his behaviour, but he did save him a lot of trouble, so he was supposed to apologise to the younger, not the other way around.

"You didn't do anything," Baekhyun finally said, "I'm sorry, okay? You're right. Thanks for saving me."

Chanyeol still didn't let go of him. "Still," he whispered, "I shouldn't have yelled at you like that. Sorry."

Baekhyun smiled reassuringly at him. "It's okay Chanyeol, really."

"Really?" he asked softly.

"Really."

He smiled back as he leaned back in his seat, now looking straight ahead, though he still had his soft smile, and Baekhyun couldn't help but smile too at the sight. The younger male seemed to care sincerely for him, but it still just confused his feelings. Baekhyun wasn't an idiot - he knew he cared for him at this point. But was he fond enough of him to call it love?

As the petite male was walking down the hallway after detention hour and was about to put his books in his locker, someone from behind him had smacked him lightly on the back of his head.

"Ouch!" he whined as he held his head and quickly turned around to find the culprit, who was, of course, Kim Jongdae.

"Seriously Baek?" he asked as he crossed his arms over his chest. "This is your third detention. Don't you have plans to stop? You might get in trouble soon."

Baekhyun rolled his eyes and he shut his locker. "I'm not doing it on purpose. I swear the teachers are spying on me just to catch me at the most unfortunate time."

Jongdae didn't seem too amused. "Is this some kind of plan to be near Chanyeol?" he asked, serious all of the sudden.

Baekhyun gaped at him. "What?" he asked surprised. "No, of course not. He just happens to always be around, causing troubles as well."

Jongdae squinted his eyes at him. "Somehow he's always there and causes troubles too, huh?"

Baekhyun rolled his eyes at him again. "Don't be ridiculous now," he said, "why would I want to go to detention to see him? I could just meet him here in the hallways or outside the school. I don't want to get in trouble on purpose." This was half true. Baekhyun didn't want to get kicked out of school, but being rebellious made him happier than he was before. It felt exciting to be with someone and just be carefree. He accepted his punishments, of course, but it was worth it - because it was fun.

"Hey Baek," the same dark voice greeted from behind the small boy. "Hello, Jongdae."

"What's up Chanyeol," Jongdae said nonchalantly. He gave Baekhyun one last glance before he returned back to his boyfriend, who was further away, and they exited the school, leaving the small and tall student alone with barely anyone else in sight.

"What's up with him?" the giant asked with a frown as he looked back down at Baekhyun.

He just shrugged. "He thinks I'm going to detention on purpose," he said without thinking.

"Why would you do that?" he asked confused.

Now Baekhyun realised he shouldn't have said that. "How - how would I know?" he muttered as he started walking, but the taller quickly caught up with him.

"That doesn't make any sense though," he chuckled as they walked side by side on their way home. "Nothing comes good out of going to detention," he said, "except I get to see you more, of course."

Baekhyun halted right away. "What?" he asked, his eyes widening. "What are you talking about?"

"In detention, I get to see you more," he said again, not realising how much he made the petite boy's heart flutter by just his comment only.

"We go to the same school," he muttered as he rolled his eyes, trying his best to play it off coolly, though he felt as if he failed miserably.

"But we're not in the same class," he said as he smiled at him, "in detention, it feels as if we're classmates. And I like that feeling."

Me too, Baekhyun thought.

"I mean, I'm not the only one feeling that way, right?"

Baekhyun froze. What was he supposed to say? "No, it does feel like we're classmates, and it's nice," he added. "Though we're only sitting there in silence."

"Sometimes silence is the best way to converse with another person you bond with - although you may not talk verbally, deep within your heart, you both know it is."

Baekhyun stared at him amazed. "Did you read that somewhere?" he asked astonished.

"No?" he said but it came more out as a question. "That's what I believe and that's what I feel when we're in detention together."

Baekhyun sped up his pace, though the taller easily caught up with him again.

"Are you okay?" he asked worriedly. Baekhyun kept on ignoring him and walked faster, but as Chanyeol had longer legs than he, it was no challenge to him. "Baek, are you ignoring me again?"

Baekhyun started running now. He kept on running faster and faster. At one moment, Chanyeol was feet away from him, but soon he caught up with him and hold onto his arm to stop him.

They were outside by now. They were actually pretty close to the playground they were at earlier when they skipped school together.

"Baekhyun, tell me," the taller said, "what's wrong? Why are you running away from me?"

The petite boy tried to force back the tears that wanted to escape from his eyes. As the younger male witnessed the wet liquid streaming down his red cheeks, he realised something he hadn't before now.

"You just keep on saying whatever you want to," the elder started, "you're saying how much you hated me, but since we slept together you want me. You say how you want to sleep with me again and how I should give in. Then you say you enjoy spending time with me? What the hell Chanyeol!" he suddenly yelled as he took a threatening step closer towards the giant, who flinched.

"Baek, I'm - "

"Don't!" Baekhyun interrupted. He quickly dried his tears with his sleeve and turned his back towards him. "I need to get home. My parents are expecting me and I got some explaining to do."

He started running again. Chanyeol was calling his name from behind him, but he didn't run after him. Eventually, he arrived at his house with his angry parents greeting him by the door.

That evening he had to explain how he had skipped school and got detention for it. He didn't tell them what Chanyeol told the principal, but the true story. He said he skipped school because he was selfish and wanted to clear his mind, though both his parents agreed with each other it was a stupid decision of his.

Of course, he knew that. He knew skipping school was never the answer. But they didn't know. They just didn't know.

Baekhyun felt so powerless. He felt as if something else had the control of his body and mind all the time. But whenever he was with Chanyeol, he felt as if he was controlling him. With just a simple word, with just a simple smile, he could make Baekhyun go against everything else. He felt as if he was under some spell - and that wasn't good.

"I'm falling for Park Chanyeol," Baekhyun told himself, now realising how deep he had fallen in his hole he had started digging ever since he jumped out of his shell and tried to stop that fight.

That night, Baekhyun cried a lot. At first, he felt pathetic. What exactly was he crying about? It wasn't like anyone he loved was sick and dying. He wasn't sick. He wasn't in danger, nor was anyone else. He wasn't in trouble other than detention.

He was in love. He had gone against his own rule and fallen in love, and with Park Chanyeol on top of that. The trouble-maker. The guy he slept with when he was wasted. The guy who sleeps with practically anyone who's willing to sleep with him just for pleasure.

Baekhyun didn't want to love a guy like that. He didn't want Chanyeol to be nice to him because he knew it was pointless to try and hate him when he knew that train had left a long time ago.

He didn't want to give in to such a guy. He used to hate guys like Chanyeol. He hates guys like Chanyeol. But he loves Chanyeol.

"You jerk," Baekhyun whispered to himself as he choked back his tears as he had his covers over his face to dry them as he was laying in bed. "You did it on purpose, you ass."
