Chapter Twenty Three
A couple of weeks passed and it was business as usual. I had been taking my routinely after-school trips to the library and had discovered that I actually really liked poetry. I had started writing couplets to cover my back but now, after consistently coming up with them, I had a newfound appreciation for them. It was no longer a chore to keep my notebook stocked up with more poems to strategically leave out around my parents, and the whole thing about me attending poetry club didn't really feel like a lie anymore. I was pretty much writing new ones every day so it was like I was at a club, except I was the only member.
Lily used to join me occasionally but she had recently joined a street dance crew, something that had taken me by surprise. She had finally spilled the beans a few weeks ago when I pestered and pestered her about why she was wearing a very intense, 50 shades of orange getup. Lily was always energetic and excitable so I suppose it shouldn't have come as a surprise to me that she would find herself in a group like that.
Her absence meant that sometimes her empty seat was filled by Klaus, but only rarely. I assumed he still had detentions most days or was just busy doing other things, but from time to time he would drift over and sit opposite me and we would just read silently. At first I had found it a bit strange and wondered if I was meant to try and start a conversation, but by now his presence was just a normal occurrence.
Since my conversation with Violet, I had often tried to work out whether Klaus and I were friends but now I had decided to stop trying to define it. We hung out sometimes and read and sometimes we spoke briefly and that was about it. Things were good how they were and I didn't want to get myself stressed out trying to work out if we were considered acquaintances or friends or whatever.
Someone who did care about labels and what Klaus and I were to each other was Caitlin who, since Lily brought her up to me, hadn't left me alone. The thing was, I had still never had a conversation with her. Instead, she seemed to prefer watching me from afar, which was extremely off putting. Then, despite her not seeing anything gossip-worthy, later on I would hear from Lily or just from stray whispers, her newest fabrications. And they just got crazier and crazier.
Once I overheard that Klaus was secretly the CEO of an overseas company and I was his personal assistant, which was a random theory to say the least.
And then Lily had mentioned to me that apparently Caitlin had said she thought Klaus was the heir to a vampire estate and I was one of his many maids, although I couldn't tell if Lily had added the vampire bit herself.
It was annoying and frustrating to say the least. To go from someone only Carmelita really teased and bothered to someone who was a target of whispers from people I don't think I'd ever even seen before, was not a fun transition. Surely people had better things to do than come up with far-fetched conspiracy theories about why Klaus and I had been interacting. It wasn't any of their business!
But whereas I was but in a bad mood by all of it, Klaus was unbothered. I mentioned it to him out of the blue one day we were both in the empty library and he just shrugged it off and said: "does it even matter?"
It matters to me! I thought to myself, but still I didn't bring it up again.
I tried doing his thing of ignoring it until it all went away, and was succeeding for a couple of days before Caitlin decided to turn the heat up.
I was in the library by myself one Monday afternoon when I got that familiar feeling of being watched, something I had grown accustomed to recently. I glanced around and it didn't take me long to find the eyes between the shelves. I glared and, knowing she'd been spotted, Caitlin revealed herself, walking towards me and acting as if she hadn't just been watching me like a complete creep.
"Can I help you?" I said, unable to take the edge out of my voice. I couldn't help it. She was driving me mad.
She seemed to ignore me though and her signature smirk crept it's way onto her face. "So, what's the deal with you and Klaus Baudelaire?"
I huffed. "I don't know what you're on about."
"Oh, you know..."
"No," I said, "I don't know."
She just smiled wider, like she was auditioning for the role of the Cheshire Cat. "We all know you two are having some secret love affair. Or that you've both been recruited by the FBI."
I decided to overlook the fact that her theories were completely unrelated and out of the blue.
"And who, exactly, is 'we'?"
"Oh, you know... everyone."
I rolled my eyes and tried to go back to my book. Unfortunately for me though, it seemed like she didn't plan to leave anytime soon, as she completely misread my silence as an invitation to sit down.
"You can tell me, you know," Caitlin continued. "I'll keep your secrets."
"I don't have any secrets, thanks."
"Oh sure you do," she said before pausing and grinning to herself. "So what did you guys do for your first date?"
That was the final straw. A quick look at my watch revealed it was just about time for me to leave anyway, so I jumped up, shoved everything into my bag, and stormed away. She hurried after me, looking like a lost puppy, but she couldn't quite meet my pace and she fell behind.
In my rush to leave, I raced around the corner and smacked right into someone and stumbled. It wasn't until Caitlin's "aw that's so cute!" echoed down the hall, that I realised the person holding me up was Klaus.
Blood rushed to my cheeks in anger and I pushed past him without a word.
"What's wrong?" He called after me. "Are you okay?"
"She's a psycho," I complained quietly, waiting for him to catch up. "She's obsessed with me- with us. She won't leave me alone."
Klaus frowned, his dark hair drooping into his eyes, and before I could process what was going on he was already halfway to Caitlin, who had still been following us despite my obvious discontent in her presence
I was just out of earshot but whatever he said to her made her face fall. I had never seen her eyes so wide. Then she gasped and took a step back. And then another. And then she was gone, scurrying down the hall away from Klaus.
My curiosity got the better of me and, as Klaus came back to me, I asked him what he had said to freak her out so much. But he didn't answer. Instead, he gestured for me to follow him and we left school without another word, silently going our separate ways.
A/N:
Hello!! I have 20 million things to say as always but I've decided I need to stop using this as a diary so.... I'll keep this to a minimum!!! (Pretty sure you guys have more important things to be doing than reading my life story hahah)
Did you guys have a fun Valentine's Day? I personally didn't do anything but mope and eat chocolate (but let's be fair that's a normal day for me), but if you did get up to something I hope you had a good time!
I feel like I say this every chapter but I want to post more than once a week but I'm doing so much overtime recently, it feels like time is just running away from me. I also want to post some original stuff on wattpad as well, although I'll probably do that on my second account. If you want to check out my second account (there's no content on it yet but there will be very soon!!!) it is @milk-and-stars
