Chapter 27. The Andreou Drive-by

Not two hours after Jennifer Makris had been given this task, the perfect hit had been set into motion.

The first phase of the perfect hit had zero casualties, as was best. Jen had selected a perfect vantage point to watch phase one go off from inside his bulletproof Cadillac de Ville, around the corner of the procession. What went off was textbook, exactly what Hugo Zane had outlined. At precisely 3:41 p.m., outside the Andreous' headquarters, a drive-by shooting commenced as four of the Andreous' button men exited the building, a brewery and pub called Threes Brewing.

The four Andreous hit the pavement immediately, and there wasn't enough time between the initial burst of machine-gun fire from the first car that sent them scrambling and throwing themselves down and the second car that came by spraying bullets everywhere for the four Andreous to notice that the first car's gunmen had actually been shooting very loud blanks.

It was best that no one be killed in this drive-by. Zane and Sigler wanted to limit police interest, keep the scene unappealing to the hotshot detectives who wanted to put mobsters behind bars on murder charges.

From her Cadillac de Ville, Jen watched the fake drive-by go off without a hitch, up to and including the mere flesh wound to an obscure and unimportant Andreou stepchild or cousin who tried to be a hero and prove himself by getting up and trying to shoot back. He was injured but not killed, the perfect blood payment for vengeance and to incite an emergency meeting with some high ranking Andreou family member, immediately — tonight, even.

It was good luck that the Andreou Family's boss, Gene Andreou, was out of town tonight because Zane, as was confided to Jen, really didn't want to kill the bossman himself. Gene Andreou would have come to talk peace — or war — with Zane personally tonight were he in the city, but Gene Andreou was either skiing in Tahoe or swimming in Lake Tahoe; the sources couldn't say which for sure, but what was certain was that the man was not in San Francisco.

Tires squealed as the procession hit the gas to get away from Threes Brewing, and Jen calmly turned the key in the ignition and passed through the intersection heading south to their east.

Phase two would be a bloodbath. The Andreous would meet to discuss peace terms or to declare war, and they wouldn't imagine Sigler's people would have any reason to take the bloodshed so far as to kill whichever family member they sent, whether Gene's wife, daughter or son, or the boss's brother.

It would send an unmistakable message: Mena Sigler's going to kill every last Andreou, so take your best shot.

Thank you for reading Detective Fog. The story continues! Stay tuned to this dial, and pass over all of your stars. That way everybody's happy.
