You Decided That I Was Worth Saving

Stefan proposed to Caroline the other night.

Bonnie and I were in Caroline's bed at the boarding house to surprise her when she woke up.

"Surprise!" I told her.

Caroline jumped, scared, sitting up. "Kaylin! What the--"

I laughed.

We sat up, looking at the room decorated with yellow balloons.

"You are engaged, and we are celebrating," Bonnie told her, giggling.

I stood, turning to face them teasingly, smiling. "First, we're gonna drink too much champagne. And then, we are taking you wedding dress shopping."

"We know it's a little early, but you're gonna try on thousands of dresses before you find the perfect one, so we may as well start now," Bonnie told her.

Caroline was still processing the environment around her. "Bonnie, Kaylin, look, I love you, and this is amazing, but you don't have to put on a happy face for me right now."

"We're not putting it on," Bonnie told her. "We're not. We're happy for you. I promise."

"Yeah, you're finally marrying my brother, and while I don't get the point of vampire weddings, I'm excited either way," I told her.

Caroline smiled. "Okay. Kaylin, I asked Bonnie and Elena to be my bridesmaids when we were ten years old. Since Elena can't be here, and like you said, since I am marrying your brother, can you please be my other bridesmaid?"

I smiled, chuckling. "Absolutely."

I picked up a bottle of champagne, breaking the neck off of the bottle, making wine overflow into three glasses, while we all laughed.

Caroline looked at Bonnie. "Okay, but I promise we are going to find Enzo..." She looked at me, and though she didn't like the person of subject to me, she knew what it meant to me. "And you're gonna wake up Klaus and co., and you are both gonna be happy."

"First things first, planning your June wedding," Bonnie told her.

Caroline became excited, smiling. "Oh, my God. Yes! The June wedding!"

Bonnie smiled dramatically. "The June wedding." We laughed. I handed them their champagne glasses. Bonnie picked up a book. "And..."

"You snuck into my house and found my old wedding book?" Caroline asked.

"How else was I gonna out-Caroline-Forbes Caroline Forbes?" Bonnie asked.

"Bonnie, this is amazing," Caroline told her. "You're both amazing. Thank you."

I nodded. "You're welcome."

Caroline smiled excitedly, raising her arms in the air. "I'm getting married!"

Bonnie smiled. "Yay!"

Caroline and Bonnie laughed.

I smirked. "Okay, now that I have a drink in you, I have to ask."

"Mm-hmm?" Caroline asked.

I took a drink. "How did Ric take the news?"

********

Caroline, Bonnie and I were in a wedding dress shop.

Caroline was checking out two dresses at the mirrors. "Let's talk silhouettes." She turned to face a bridal clerk. "Focus on A-lines and sheaths. I'm open to trumpets, but easy on the volume."

"Less dress, more bride," the bridal clerk told her.

Caroline smiled. "Exactly."

"Okay," the bridal clerk told her.

"Thank you," Caroline told her.

"You're welcome," the bridal clerk told her. "I'll be right back."

The bridal clerk walked away with the dresses.

Caroline walked toward where Bonnie and I were sitting in chairs and drinking wine. "Now, let's get to work finding you the perfect maid of honor dresses."

"Are you saying that we're both the maid of honors, because I'm Stefan's sister, and Bonnie's your best friend that is not in a coma until she dies?" I asked.

Caroline chuckled. "Maybe. I'm going to do everything within my bridal power to make sure Bonnie and Enzo live happy ever after, and while I may not like Klaus, I hope that you do end up having a happily ever after, too, Kaylin."

"Happily ever after was never something in the end for me," I told them.

"All right, you know what?" Caroline asked. "No. You don't get to be all doomsday. I've got killer aim, and no qualms about rigging the bouquet toss." Bonnie chuckled. "You ready?"

"Yep," Bonnie answered.

Bonnie and I stood.

Caroline turned her back to us, tossing the bouquet toward us. "Catch!"

Damon appeared in front of Bonnie and me, catching the bouquet in one hand, holding the dead bridal clerk in the other.

Caroline turned to face us.

I gave Damon a shocked look, having not expected to see Damon so soon after what happened to Sarah. "Damon, what are you..." I looked at the dead bridal clerk, sighing in exasperation. "Bonnie, Caroline, run."

Caroline rushed toward Bonnie, grabbing her, rushing away.

Damon dropped the body to the floor, rushing toward me, gripping my throat in an attempt to hurt me, but I wasn't phased. "Oh, looks like our brother's getting married, huh, sister? Consider this my RSVP. Oh, poor Kay. Literally always the bridesmaid. Never the bride." I grabbed Damon by the arms, spinning around to throw him into a rack of dresses, making him and the rack of dresses fall to the floor. Enzo appeared behind me, grabbing me from behind to restrain me, pulling me away. Damon walked along. "Caroline? I can hear your broken little heart beating, Bonnie."

Damon checked behind a few dresses.

Caroline stabbed Damon with a hanger, pushing him to the floor.

I broke free from Enzo, spinning to kick him in the face, snapping his neck, letting him fall.

Caroline pushed Damon toward me by the hanger that was in his chest.

I pulled a railing off a rack, rushing toward Damon, driving it into his stomach, pushing him against a cabinet behind him, impaling him there.

Damon smirked. "She's coming. Sybil. And if you're here when she gets here, she'll take you, too."

I turned to look at Caroline, nodding. Caroline and I got Bonnie out of the dress store.

Stefan and I were driving in his car.

"Stefan, if Damon and Enzo want Bonnie dead, then she's dead," I told him.

"Why are they coming after her?" Stefan asked. "It makes no sense."

"None of it makes sense," I told him. "But we're gonna need weapons. Lots of them, and Caroline and Bonnie are at the house, looking for them."

"Fine," Stefan told me. "Then you and I will track Damon and Enzo, and with any luck, the drones will lead us back to the queen."

"And when we find her?" I asked.

"Ric's still working on that part," Stefan told me.

I sighed. My phone started to ring. I looked at the Caller ID to see that Damon was calling, answering. "Calling me from your own phone. Gutsy. What makes you think I won't use it to track you down?"

"No need. I'm at the high school."

"Why would you tell us that?" Stefan asked.

"Because I'm gonna need a favor, brother."

"And what would that be?" Stefan asked.

"Whatever desire you have to save me, I kind of need that right now."

Stefan and I looked at each other in confusion.

********

Stefan and I got to the high school, walking toward Damon.

"Look, if this is all some sort of an elaborate trap, we might as well skip to the part where you spring it," Stefan told him.

"No trap, elaborate or otherwise," Damon told us. "I just need your help."

"With what?" I asked.

"I can't tell you," Damon told us. Stefan and I gave him exasperated looks. 'No, I mean I literally can't tell you. I can't physically make myself form the words." He showed us a broken baseball bat, leading us toward his car. "That's the thing about Sybil; she's not big on free will. She kind of Lo-Jacked my brain. Whenever I try and form the words to tell you what's going on, it just comes out applesauce penguin."

"Well, if you cant tell us how to save you, then I'm at a loss, because we're running out of ways to pull you back from the brink," Stefan told him.

"Sounds suspiciously like someone's given up," Damon told us.

"Not yet," I told him. "But I'm not about to let Elena wake up to find out you murdered her best friend."

Damon held up the broken baseball bat. "This isn't for Bonnie."

Stefan looked at him in confusion. "Then, who's it for?"

Damon opened his trunk to show us where Enzo was unconscious, tied up with vervain ropes.

********

We were inside, where Enzo was just waking up.

I used a knife to cut Enzo free from his vervain ropes.

Enzo stood.

Caroline texted Stefan and me to tell us that Sybil had explained to her and Bonnie that she was making Damon and Enzo fight each other to try and make Bonnie choose between them as to who lived and who died.

"That's what this is about?" I asked skeptically. "You two fight each other to the death?"

"Well, I don't know about the 'each other' part," Damon told us. "Which is why I brought you two along as second and third."

"So, you don't want us to help you fight Sybil," Stefan told him. "You actually want us to help you fight Enzo?"

"Yeah, hardly a fair fight, at that," Enzo told us.

"Hey, man," Damon told him. "Nowhere in Sybil's fine print did it say anything at all about no backup. And it's not my fault you don't have any friends to stand up for you."

Enzo nodded sarcastically. "Oh, yes, yes. How naive of me to think that you were my friend."

"I tried to be your friend, Enzo," Damon told him. "Tried to convince you to give yourself over to Sybil."

"Hey," Stefan told him. "If Enzo can fight this, why can't you, Damon?"

"'Cause it's pointless, Stefan," Damon told him. "We are in this mess because he refuses to accept that. But if he'd just sign over his pink slip to Sybil, we wouldn't be here."

"You can't kill Enzo," I told him. "Bonnie would never forgive you. And honestly, a part of me would never forgive you, either."

"Oh, don't bother, Kaylin," Enzo told me. "Sybil's been messing around in the recesses of his brain, toying with the safe places in his subconscious. Lord only knows the damage she's done."

"You three forget that I don't care about anything anymore," Damon told us. "I'm just trying to stay alive. He and I both know what awaits us if we don't."

I looked at the clock, seeing that it was almost 3:00, and knowing that was when the fight would start, getting really worried. "Enzo... you need to run."

"Afraid I don't have enough free will left in the tank for that," Enzo told us.

"Kaylin, what are you doing?" Damon asked. "I didn't bring you here to be Switzerland. I brought you here because you are my sister. When that clock strikes 3:00, I'm gonna be counting on you to remember that."

"And Enzo is my ex-boyfriend," I told him. "You can't honestly believe that I would help you kill him."

The clock stroke 3:00. Damon and Enzo ran at each other.

********

Damon and Enzo were fighting, trying to push each other to the floor. Stefan and I pulled them apart, standing between them, but they pushed us aside to continue their fight, punching and kicking each other.

I grabbed Enzo, throwing him to the floor, turning to face Damon, holding him back by his shoulders. "I am not letting you two kill each other."

Enzo started to stand. Stefan punched him in the face, making him fall. Enzo stood, pushing Stefan off of him, while Damon pushed me off of him.

"You think I want this?" Enzo asked. "He's not gonna stop. But I will put him down if I have to. If you get in my way, I will kill you, too."

Enzo rushed past us to tackle Damon to the floor.

********

Damon and Enzo were both standing and fighting more. Damon punched Enzo in the face, making him fall. I grabbed Damon by his jacket, turning around, throwing him through a pile of boxes and concrete steps, trying to get him to stop fighting. Damon rushed past Stefan and me toward Enzo. Enzo stood, pushing Stefan into a shelf, making it fall. Damon grabbed Enzo, turning around to push him into the wall, gripping him by the throat, trying to punch into his chest. I grabbed a shovel from nearby, using it to hit Damon in the head before he had a chance to rip Enzo's heart out, making him fall, sighing in exasperation and annoyance, rolling my eyes. Enzo pushed past me to grab Damon and push him against the stairwell railing, trying to stake him in the heart. Stefan rushed toward Enzo, pushing him into the railing, making him fall, taking the stake from Enzo, raising it to stake him.

I caught Stefan's arm to stop him. "Stefan, stop!"

"Kaylin, I'm trying to save our brother," Stefan told me.

"And I'm trying to save both of them," I told him. "Don't make me say it again."

Damon and Enzo were annoyed that we were getting in the way of their fight, snapping both my neck and Stefan's neck while we were distracted with arguing about who to save, letting us fall unconscious.

********

Stefan and I woke up to find that everyone had gone outside, where Damon was trying to kill Bonnie, and Alaric and Caroline had shown up.

"I don't know who you are, but--" Sybil started.

Alaric tapped a tuning fork against the hood of his car, making a piercing ring pulse out through the air.

Sybil was overcome with pain by the sound of it, groaning, holding her head, starting to scream, falling to her knees.

Enzo rushed toward Caroline, pushing her against her car. Stefan rushed up behind Enzo, snapping his neck, letting him fall.

I rushed up to Sybil, kicking her in the head angrily in fury with all of my strength because of what she did to Sarah, Damon and Enzo, smirking in satisfaction.

Damon pulled himself up to his feet.

"Damon, it's over," Stefan told him. "You're free now."

"I wish that were the case, Stefan, but my work with her is just getting started," Damon told him, opening his car door.

"What work?" I asked. "What does she want with you?"

"Applesauce penguin, Kaylin," Damon told me, getting into his car, driving away.

Stefan and I looked at each other in confusion.

********

Bonnie told us that Sybil had made Enzo turn off his humanity and that she had chose Enzo.

Stefan, Bonnie and I were standing in the basement of the Armory, where we saw Sybil in a cell sitting on the bed with her back to us.

"Maybe now we'll get some answers," Stefan told us. He looked at Bonnie. "You sure you can handle Enzo?"

"I'll be fine," Bonnie told us.

I sighed. "You know, if you need my help with getting him to the cabin..."

"I said I'll be fine," Bonnie told us.

"Okay," Stefan told her.

"If it were up to you, you would have picked Damon," Bonnie told us. "And you would've done it knowing that Enzo was the one fighting Sybil. The one risking his life to help us."

Stefan sighed. "Yes."

"Let me ask you something," Bonnie told us. "What has Damon done? Besides give up?"

"I was trying to save both of them, Bonnie," I told her. "I chose both of them. You're the one that chose Enzo. You're the one that made a choice. So don't for a second think about blaming us for making a choice when you're the one that did."

Bonnie looked hurt and shamed.

I gave Stefan and Bonnie both a look, walking away, leaving.

********

I was at the Grill, sitting at the bar, sighing, finishing my drink.

Alaric slid a glass over to me with a new drink. "Looks like you could use that."

"Thanks," I told him, finishing the half filled glass in one drink.

The bartender came closer with new drinks. "Here you go."

"You can leave the bottle," I told him.

The bartender put down the bottle in front of us, walking away.

"You know, I never had a brother, let alone two," Alaric told me. "Uh, Damon was the closest thing. And I have to believe that if you have gotten him back before, there has got to be a way to do it again."

"I don't know," I told him. "This is different. I've never seen him like this before. I really hoped that when we put Sybil down, it'd break whatever control she had over him. That he'd go back to being whatever Damon's version of normal is again. But somehow, some way, she still has ahold of him."

"And it doesn't help that you're overwhelming yourself in trying to save Damon, save Enzo, save the Mikaelsons," Alaric told me.

"Yeah, everyone's got plenty to say about that," I told him. "I really don't care if you think I'm horrible to try and save them, all right? I just don't care anymore."

"I think that you have a long history with that family, and that it's complicated and messy," Alaric told me. "I don't think it's horrible. I think they are, but not you."

I chuckled. "Yeah. Well... that's debatable."

We both continued to drink.
