What Are You?

Damon was still driving me and him on the road after Cade had made Stefan choose to kill Elena and Enzo or 100 people by nightfall.

We didn't know what happened.

I was trying to call Bonnie, having my phone on speaker. "Bonnie, hey." Bonnie was crying on the other line. "Bonnie?"

"Bonnie, hey, what's wrong?" Damon asked. "Is she still alive? Bonnie, talk to us."

"She's okay. Elena's okay."

"Well, those aren't tears of joy, Bon," I told her. "Cade said that Stefan had to kill Elena or Enzo. Please... please, tell me that..."

I couldn't finish, taking several deep breaths.

"He's gone. Enzo's gone."

I knew that she was going to confirm it, but it didn't make anything easier. It made it worse, because I had known that he was dead before being told, still absolutely horrified and devastated. "No."

"He's dead. Your brother killed him."

Damon looked at me worriedly in horror.

I looked down, not even bothering to try to stop myself from crying, letting more than a few tears fall, closing my eyes.

"Listen to me, Bonnie," Damon told her. "Kaylin and I are on our way, okay?"

"No! Stay away. Just stay away from me."

"Not until I know you're safe," Damon told her. "We'll deal with Stefan."

"I already did."

I sniffled, taking a deep breath, forcing myself to speak. "What do you mean?"

"I gave him the Cure. He's human now."

Damon and I were completely in shock, still horrified by Enzo's death, stunned by the fact that Stefan, our brother, was human.

I had to call Caroline so that she could call Stefan, because he wasn't taking either of our calls, and we didn't expect him to after everything that happened and everything that he had said just before he had actually killed Enzo.

********

I was at home, thinking about everything that we had lost, everything that I wanted back. Not just Klaus or the other Mikaelsons, but Enzo, even Tyler and Elena. I was overwhelmed with everything that I was feeling after just getting over the dimmer switch binge and having all of my emotions back on, crying silently, and it took a hell of a lot to get me to cry. I was standing in front of the fireplace, drinking, gazing off numbly in despair.

Damon walked toward me in concern. "Kaylin?"

I tried to compose myself, trying to pull myself together, wiping away the tears so that he didn't see. "Stefan was right. I've been trying my hardest to take care of everyone, to save everyone. And he was right about the fact that once I felt all of that emotion, the way it overwhelms me... it's crushing me. He was right. I'm close to breaking, Damon, and I have never broke before. I don't want to now."

"You've been taking on a lot of pressure for the last 168 years of your time on this earth," Damon told me. "Most of it to deal with our family, Julian, the Mikaelsons. Especially the last three years. A lot of the pressure that you've been putting yourself through to try to save everyone. I'm surprised that you've stayed strong this long. You nearly lost me and Enzo to Sybil, and now you had to lose Enzo to Stefan because of a deal with the Devil that I made both of you make..."

"I'm not gonna break, Damon," I told him.

"Sometimes it's okay to break," Damon told me.

I shook my head. "Not gonna happen."

Despite my best efforts to remain strong, I got so overwhelmed that I crushed the glass in my hand, making it shatter, letting the shards fall to the floor.

Damon's phone rang. He pulled it out to answer. "He hasn't come back."

Caroline's voice was on the other line. "That's because he's on his way to Rockland County Police Department. He's been arrested."

"Okay. That's good."

"In what world is that 'good'?"

"One where Stefan's human. His emotions are back. The memories of every drop of blood he's ever spilled are gonna be a square dance in his head. Especially after what just happened. What he knows he's putting Kaylin through. It's best he's not alone with all this right now. We'll meet you there. Have you talked to Bonnie?"

Caroline sighed. "I've left so many messages. She just won't answer her phone. I don't get it."

"I do," I told them, gazing off. "Think about it. Can you blame her? Because I can't."

Damon sighed. "I'll call you when we're close."

Damon hung up.

I sensed someone behind us, turning around to face Cade, seeing that he was sitting in a chair. "Damon."

Damon frowned in confusion, turning around to follow my gaze.

"Forgive me," Cade told us. "I let myself in. I came to offer my condolences. I'm sorry for your loss."

I glared at him furiously. "No, you're not. Seeing as you're the reason that Enzo's dead."

"I was referring to your brother," Cade told us. "Our deal was for three immortal souls. Your friends found a loophole when they made Stefan human, rendering our agreement null and void."

"Well, if you're making house calls, I'm guessing that we're not free," I told him.

"While the two of you remain immortal, Stefan does not," Cade told us. "Which I am free to end his life and recall his soul to the fiery pits of my world whenever I choose. I'm thinking he should die at midnight."

"And the fact that you're waiting tells me you want something more than Stefan," Damon told him.

Cade smirked. "In fact, there is." He stood. "I've taken an interest in local history. There's an 18th century journal written by Ethan Maxwell. I believe your friend, the occult studies professor, has come into possession of it."

"Is that what you want?" I asked furiously. "Hmm? A dusty old book?"

"It's a small price to pay for allowing Stefan to live out the remainder of his human life before he returns to me," Cade told us. "And our original deal was to have three Salvatores at my beck and call. Stefan is all but useless to me now. So, I would like to call upon another."

"What other?" Damon asked skeptically. "Stefan, Kaylin and I are the last ones standing."

Cade smirked in amusement. "Last ones alive, yes. Not the last ones on earth. Not even the last ones in this very home."

Cade held his hand toward me.

I felt something unexplainable happening to me, groaning in pain, uncomfortable, feeling a warmth inside of me like life, watching as my abdomen started to glow in shock and suspicion.

Damon caught me so that I wouldn't fall, looking at Cade incredulously in anger. "What the hell are you doing to her?"

"Giving your sister what she wants," Cade answered. "You see, contrary to popular belief when Julian beat Kaylin until she lost her baby, he didn't beat it out of her. He just beat her until the child died. When I touched you earlier today, Kaylin, to give you hallucinations about how you couldn't kill me, I was also confirming what I suspected, that there was still a trace of your child inside you. And I did find something that I could bring back to life." Damon and I were in shock, watching as my stomach started to enlarge slowly. "When you have your child, your daughter, she will be like me. An immortal psychic that needs to feed on the souls of the wicked to survive, who grows the more souls she feeds on, and who will be essentially unkillable, one who reaches a certain age and will remain that way for the rest of her immortal life. If you don't kill and deliver souls to me, or to your daughter, she will die once again, and I will send her to Hell, where she will suffer for her mother's sins. And there are so many sins. I turned Seline and Sybil, who had just been human cannibals, into Sirens 2,000 years ago, and I created Hell with a scream and a psychic wave. I can turn a stillborn into a psychic immortal. One that I am feeding as of now, all the souls that you delivered me, to make her grow enough to where she will be born, and tear her way out of you while she does so. If I'm not the psychic that you kill for, Kaylin, will Rae be the one? Make no mistake. This is not a gift. This is leverage for you to do as I say. Fail, and you once again lose your daughter, and she'll spend the rest of eternity in torment of nothing but fire and pain. Obey, and you have the daughter you have always longed for, and the information you need to awake the Mikaelsons. The choice is yours."

Damon and I were still completely in shock, stunned into silence.

********

Damon helped me into the Armory, because whatever the hell Cade did was still happening, and it was excruciating. Rae was still growing, and it felt like there was enough of her alive inside me to tear me apart.

Alaric, Dorian and Matt were there.

Matt hung up his phone. "Bonnie's not picking up. I tried her five times."

Dorian was looking at Damon and me in shock.

Alaric followed his gaze, standing, confused and in shock. "What is going on?"

"We need a little help," I told them. "And to borrow a book. Maxwell family tell-all. I'm guessing it's been out of print for awhile."

Dorian held up a journal. "You mean this?"

"Convenient," Damon told them. "And yes."

"Why are you so interested in my family tree all of a sudden, and what the hell is going on with Kaylin?" Matt asked.

"Isn't it obvious?" Damon asked. "Stefan's human now, and our deal with Cade was that he needed three immortal Salvatores, so he's bringing back Kaylin's unborn child that was killed but not miscarried 153 years ago. Bringing her back as a psychic, at that, that he is feeding dozens and dozens of souls to make her grow so fast that she is going to be born sometime today and most likely will tear her way out of Kaylin."

They were completely in shock, dumbfounded.

"Like we were saying," I told them. "We need help. Now."

********

I was in the basement of the Armory, laying in an infirmary bed, in agony.

Damon, Alaric, Matt and Dorian were nearby the door.

"Okay, Damon, if the Devil is bringing your niece back from the dead inside your sister, what the hell are you worried about a journal for?" Matt asked.

"Well, Kaylin hasn't been able to sleep lately, and she definitely won't be able to now, so she needs a little help, and I thought that this would do the trick," Damon told them.

I rolled my eyes at the lie, breathing heavily. "What's it to you?"

"Well, Matt here has been getting visions because of that journal, and you show up looking for it after Cade is in the process of bringing your daughter to life inside of you," Alaric told me. "Coincidence? I think not. So why don't you tell us the real reason you want it?"

"All right," I told them. "We got about six hours and change until Cade takes Stefan's life unless we give him that book. He's... bringing back Rae to keep Damon and me locked in our deal of three immortal Salvatores."

"What does he want with it?" Dorian asked.

"We don't know, but if it saves our brother's life, we don't care," Damon told them.

"I'm sorry, but you don't give the Devil what he wants if you don't know why he wants it," Alaric told us.

"I'm sorry, too, old buddy," Damon told him. "But Stefan and Kaylin are in this mess because of me. So, you're gonna have to kill me, again, if you want to stop me."

"Guys, can we just focus on finding out why Cade wants the journal before--if--we can it over?" I asked, breathing heavily in pain. "During which time, there's gonna be a vampire/psychic immortal birth that is most likely gonna tear me apart just like Cade wants."

Dorian pointed at the room across the hallway visible through the windows. "We'll be right over there, trying to figure out why the Maxwell journal is affecting Matt like this."

"Go ahead," I told them. I chuckled hysterically in sarcasm. "There's nothing to see here."

Alaric, Matt and Dorian looked worried, walking into the other room, turning on the intercom system to where we could hear them and they could hear us from either room.

Damon remained with me, looking at a complete loss on what to do, but wanting to be here anyway. "Kaylin..."

"It's okay," I told him. "Even if I die, Cade's just gonna bring me back, anyway, so..."

"Under any other circumstances, that would be funny, but in this situation, and how broken and defeated you just sounded?" Damon asked. "Not funny." I rolled my eyes, tilting my head, sighing. We watched as Alaric and Dorian were putting Matt in a hypnosis state in the other room. "You know, the clock is ticking for both Kaylin and Stefan, but by all means, let's give Donovan a physical."

Matt gave us a thumbs up.

"Well, if we could figure out why this journal is so important to Cade, maybe we can figure out how to stop him," Alaric told us. "After that, it's all yours."

"Oh, yeah?" Damon asked. "How is your little science experiment going to do that, huh?"

"We're going to trigger Matt's visions by inducing a hypnotic state," Alaric answered. "If we're lucky, the answer's in his head."

"That would be a first," Damon told us.

"The sedative should be kicking in," Alaric told us.

"Matt, how you feeling?" I asked.

"You're seriously asking me that right now, Kaylin?" Matt asked. "I mean, me?"

"Just shut up or answer the damn question," I told him.

"Like I'm on the back half of a 12 ride," Matt answered.

"That's good," Dorian told him.

Alaric helped Matt. "I want you to focus on the metronome and listen to the sound of my voice. I want you to close your eyes and relax." Ironically, the hypnosis talking and the sound of the metronome was helping me deal with the pain. "I'm gonna lead you down a long path. This may take a while."

"It better be done by the time I am," I told them. "We can just dive right in."

"Okay, Matt, picture yourself there, and tell me what you see," Alaric told him.

"The bell," Matt answered. "The Maxwell journal. It's the old house where the witches were burned. But it's not old. It looks brand new. It's Sybil. She's here. She wants Ethan to come with her. He can't resist her."

********

Matt was telling us that Ethan Maxwell, the writer of the journal, had had a best friend named Beatrice Bennett, and that they had a secret code for when they were planning to use the bell to kill the vampires in Mystic Falls, before Sybil and Seline had tampered with the bell to make it where Hellfire would be unleashed and level the town instead. "We're in the caves. There's a door. It's the room where you found the journal. It's full of the Sirens' treasures, tools, weapons. Seline's there, too. She has the tuning fork. They're forcing Ethan to add it to the bell."

"Come on, cut to the chase," I told them. "Where's the smoking gun in the story, huh? Why is the journal so important?"

"Listen, he can't control what he's seeing," Alaric told us. "I would tell you to relax, but I'm pretty sure that's something that you cannot do right now, Kaylin."

"Oh, really?" I asked sarcastically in frustration and pain. "What gave you the first freaking clue? Damon, where the hell is Stefan?"

Damon sighed, walking away to call Stefan.

********

The machines writing down Matt's brainwaves were going off.

"The witches are gathering for the ringing of the bell," Matt told us. "Ethan can't warn Bea because he's Sirened not to tell her. He's encoded a message for her. He can't stop himself. He's been Sirened to ring the bell and destroy the town. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. They're trying to stop it."

Matt seemed to be having a heart attack.

"We've gotta bring him out," Dorian told us. "He can't take much more."

"Matt," Alaric told him. "Matt! Matt, come on. Matt! Matt, Matt."

"The witches are trying to pull back the flames and save the town," Matt told us. "They're dying. Sacrificing themselves to stop the fire."

"I think he's having a heart attack," Alaric told us.

"Come on, Matt," Dorian told him.

"Damon, give him your blood," I told him. Matt started to flatline. "Do it!"

Damon rushed out of this room into their room to feed Matt his blood.

"Will that work?" Dorian asked.

"If it repairs the heart in time," Damon answered, biting his wrist, feeding his blood to Matt.

Matt started to heal and gain strength in his heartbeat again.

I sighed in relief.

Matt continued on to tell us the story about how the witches sacrificed themselves to save the town, and how Beatrice and Ethan were the only ones who had survived. "Bea... Beatrice, she has a plan to stop the Sirens." Damon came back to my room to stand next to me. Matt told us that Beatrice was the one that had sealed Sybil and Seline into the vault and locked Ethan into a room. "She just trapped him in the room where you found his bones." Ethan knew how to kill the Devil, but he couldn't tell Bea. "He's trying to tell her the only way he can." Ethan had written it down in the journal, in the way that we could use the code breaker to figure it out. Matt woke up. "It's in the journal."

I started to feel even more agonizing pain as the souls continued to make Rae grow into baby-completion, where she started to tear her way out, making me groan and scream in agony.

Damon tried to calm me down as much as he could, actually being a little comforting, if not annoying.

Stefan and Caroline walked into the basement toward us.

"Kaylin?" Stefan asked.

I was literally surprised at how relieved I was to see him after everything that had happened, but it having him here made me feel a little better. "Stefan..."

Stefan walked closer worriedly in guilt and regret, obviously hating himself for what had happened, but just trying to be here now. "Hey. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

I shook my head, breathing heavily. "Don't. It's not your fault. You're here. That's all that matters."

"You're just saying that because of what's happening right now," Stefan told me. "I know you're angry. And you have every right to be. I don't deserve your forgiveness."

"Stef, please just shut the hell up," I told him. "You're only making me feel your pain on top of mine."

Damon and Stefan both chuckled barely, sadly, worriedly, but in awe and wonder.

I continued to groan in agony as the day of agony that Cade was putting me through to bring my daughter back was finally over when she was born.

********

It was over, and I had practically died, but of course, I was okay now. While Stefan and Caroline were getting me and Rae home, Damon had been stealing the Maxwell journal from Alaric, Matt and Dorian.

Damon and I were making sure that Stefan and Caroline were staying away from Cade and with Rae, so that when he came to see us again, they weren't around, but he wanted to see both Damon and me, and he wasn't the type of guy that you just said no to without consequences, as we had learned with his plot to get Stefan to kill Enzo.

I held up the journal.

"Cutting it pretty close," Cade told us.

"Story of our lives," I told him. Cade walked closer to take the journal from me, but I held tighter. "Today was agony, by the way, which is what you wanted to give me since I disobeyed you. You did all this to make me suffer, even though bringing back my daughter would be a gift to anyone else. I'll take what I can get, but you brought her back as a psychic that needs to feed on souls, or I lose her again. You're making me work for you just so that I get to keep my daughter, doing this all a day after you made my brother kill my best friend. You've lived up to the term 'The Devil'."

"How do we know you're gonna keep up your end about keeping Rae alive as long as Kaylin kills for you, and that you'll let Stefan live?" Damon asked.

"You don't," Cade answered coldly, taking the journal out of my hand. "Thank you." He looked through the journal. "Your brother's free to live out the term of his human life, and your daughter's free to live out an immortal life as a psychic that you need to feed in more way than one. I hope they make the most of their borrowed time."

"Just between us bad guys, has anyone ever earned their way out?" Damon asked.

"I wouldn't want to give you false hope," Cade told us, holding up the journal, magically setting it on fire, tossing it into the fireplace, turning to me. "Just remember, Kaylin. Should you cease to kill for me, Rae will return to the dead, and you will--"

"Once again lose my daughter, and her soul will go to Hell to pay for my many sins," I finished in annoyance. "You made that perfectly clear when you were in the process of bringing her back. Took all day and a hell of a lot of pain. Emphasis on the 'hell'. If I kill for you, you leave Rae and Stefan alone, right?"

Cade nodded, feigning innocence. "Of course. And I might even let Damon free of the killing as long as Rae does what her mother will continue to do when she comes of age."

Damon looked at him in annoyance, knowing that this had been coming. "You want Rae to work for you, too."

Cade smirked. "One never knows when a psychic immortal, other than yourself, might come in handy. I'll see you again, Salvatores."

Cade walked away, out of the house.

Damon and I looked at each other worriedly, completely overwhelmed with everything that was going on.

********

Stefan was in the twins' nursery that he had set up for Lizzie and Josie, but there was a leftover crib there that he had gotten out for Rae.

Damon and I walked toward him, standing outside the crib, looking at Rae, all of us in shock, knowing that we weren't going to get out of the deal, and that it was bad, but we were awed by the fact that Rae was here, looking at her wonderingly.

I was still in shock from everything that happened with Enzo and Rae and Cade, slowly lifting Rae out of the crib into my arms to hold her, knowing that I had to do the unthinkable just to let her grow up and to keep her alive, stunned, in awe, but still incredibly devastated by what had happened just before (Enzo), and incredibly worried by what was to come. (Cade's deal)

"How does it feel to be a mother and a mere mortal?" Damon asked. "You both wanted the things that you have now so badly before."

"Well, I hurt," Stefan answered. "Definitely hurt."

"I feel like Rae is the one good thing that has happened to us in a very long time, but I can't appreciate it because of everything that Cade screwed us over with, and I'm not just talking about how he brought her back or what I have to do to keep her alive," I answered.

"Damon explained to me what Cade did, word for word, but I'm still trying to wrap my head around it," Stefan told me.

"Yeah, well, so am I, among other things," I told them.

"I'm so sorry, Kaylin," Stefan told me. "There's nothing I can say that can make you understand how sorry I am. Not after Lily and Julian, Klaus, his family, the compulsion, the Sirens taking Damon and Enzo, one of your brothers selling your soul to the Devil... and then to have to lose your ex-boyfriend, your current best friend, because of your other brother..."

I had tears in my eyes, sighing heavily. "Yeah. Well, the last few years of my life have been my worst. And just before New Orleans went down, I was actually happy. Happier than I had been in... forever, because I had finally stopped denying how I felt. How I feel, and what I want."

"Well, you got something that you wanted back," Damon told me. "Something that we never thought you would be able to get back."

I looked at Rae thoughtfully in my arms for a moment, still grieving and reeling. "Yeah."

"When I think about how our lives were supposed to be..." Stefan trailed off. "It's gone now. Everything's changed. Cade said that the more souls Rae has, the more she'll grow, and when she reaches a certain age, she'll remain that way forever. What's the certain age? How long will she have before she gets there? Ten years from now, twenty, fifty? We're living entirely different lives."

"I know that this isn't exactly what you saw in your future, Kay, but you got something back that was taken from your past," Damon told me. "I know it doesn't make up for the loss of Enzo, but it makes up for some of your loss, right?"

I nodded. "Of course. I just... have no idea what I'm going to do now."

Stefan sighed, shaking his head. "I don't, either."

I sighed, looking from Stefan to Damon on either side of me. "I have to kill for Cade just to make sure that my daughter survives, and he wants her to do the same thing that I'll be doing when she gets there. I never thought that I would get Rae back, brothers, but I definitely never wanted this life for her. I never thought that she could have have this life because I never thought I would get to have a life. And Enzo doesn't get to live out the rest of his. It's my fault."

"How the hell do you make this your fault?" Damon asked.

"Because I shouldn't have ever gotten involved with him," I answered. "If I hadn't, Cade wouldn't have put a target on his back to get to me."

Stefan looked overwhelmed with guilt and self-loathing. "Kaylin, I said horrible things to you before I did what I did. I said that I wanted to see you break."

"Yeah, well, the Ripper almost got what he wished for, but I'm stronger than that, Stefan," I told him. "No matter how much I want to break, I can't. I don't have the luxury of breaking into pieces. Not with everything that I have to do."

Stefan sighed. "I spent the entire ride over to the Armory trying to figure out what I was going to say to you and to Bonnie. And I hadn't thought of anything on the ride over. And now I'm just rambling on, knowing that nothing I say can make either of you feel better."

"Stefan, if you can't figure out a way to forgive yourself, you can't expect me or Bonnie to," I told him.

"I know," Stefan told me sadly.

"But you're doing what you're always doing," Damon told me. "Trying to find a reason to forgive Stefan anyway, so that you don't have to lose him, too. You put on the act of a fearless vampire warrior very well, sister, but you've always been afraid of one thing. Losing everyone that you care about and being left alone."

"And I know that it's easier for you to give me your forgiveness because I'm your brother, and you don't want to hate me after everything that you've already lost," Stefan told me. "I just don't know how Bonnie will react."

"Well, maybe you'll be surprised," Damon told him. "Bonnie's a much better person than any of us. I'm not saying it won't take time, but the clock doesn't start ticking until you say the words."

Stefan sighed, nodding in agreement. "Well, regardless of how that goes, I just wanted to say thank you for saving my life even if you do hate me right now, Kaylin."

"Oh, that?" I asked. "That's no big deal. We do that 'cause it's Tuesday."

"Can you please not make it seem like nothing gets to you for once?" Stefan asked. "So that I can apologize and thank you and know that you're actually hearing me? You gave me a chance to undo all the damage that I've done, even after I killed your best friend."

I took a deep breath, looking down. "I don't know what you want me to say, Stefan. Because I'm not gonna forgive you until you forgive yourself, because you don't want me to forgive you at all. I know that. It's just easier and more fair on both of us that way."

"We get it, brother," Damon told him. "We both have some undoing of our own to do."

"Do you think that there's a chance for us?" Stefan asked. "For redemption?"

I looked up, hesitating for a long moment, unable to meet their gazes, nodding. "Absolutely. You apologized to me over and over, Stefan. You have another girl to go apologize to."

Stefan nodded in agreement, hesitating for a long moment, sighing, turning around, walking away.

********

Caroline was with Rae so that Damon and I could go see Dorian and Alaric at the Armory.

"Hey, Dorian, I'm so sorry it got so crazy around here today," Alaric told him. "What was it you needed my help with?"

They turned to see us walking in.

Dorian looked at Alaric. "You know what? It can wait until tomorrow. Looks like you have bigger things to deal with."

Dorian walked past Damon and me on his way out of the Armory.

Alaric gave Damon and me a look. "Do you have any idea what you've done?"

"Yep," I answered. "We saved our brother and made sure that I wouldn't lose my daughter just as I got her back, Ric. I would apologize for going behind your back, but after Cade, Enzo, and Rae, I'm too exhausted to apologize."

"Stefan's human, and if we're lucky, we have 80 something years to make peace with the fact that he's going to die one day," Damon told him. "And in the most twisted game that the Devil could think of, he gave Kaylin's daughter back to her, brought my niece back to life. All we could do was to make sure that they both stayed alive."

"Why do you only seem to care about laws when it's your own?" Alaric asked.

"Because, say it with me, Ric," Damon told him. "The Salvatores are selfish."

Alaric raised his voice angrily. "You have absolutely no idea how important that journal was."

"I'm gonna take a shot and say that it was an instruction manual to kill Cade," Damon told him.

"So you knew, and you gave it to him anyway?" Alaric asked, not seeming at all surprised.

"Yep," I answered. "Because we know how it ends. Come on. Grab your blindfold and your headphones. Caroline's with Rae, and I want to get back as soon as I can, so we need to get this done, now."

I didn't wait for a response, walking past them toward the vault.

********

We walked into the vault, in the hidden room where they had found the journal, the bones and the tools and weapons and everything else.

"Sybil sure loved to hear herself talk," Damon told us. "But in all that blabbering, she did mention that she had an insurance policy against Cade." He picked up a bone blade from the table. "I'm betting this is it."

"Oh, yeah?" Alaric asked. "And how sure are you?"

"60/40," Damon answered.

"But a relic of Cade's creation that is the means to destroy him?" I asked. "Now that has a certain poetry to it. I'm willing to try everything to get me, Rae and Damon out of this deal. What about you, Ric?"

Alaric tried to take the blade from Damon.

Damon took the blade out of his reach. "Ah. Admit it." He spoke in a sing-song voice. "We did pretty good." Alaric barely managed a smirk, taking the blade from Damon. Damon looked around. "Now, you gotta have a bottle of bourbon stashed in here somewhere. I say we grab that, exchange a few half-assed apologizes for all the crap we've done to each other, and make a plan to kill the Devil."

We heard someone walk in from behind us with a very familiar voice. "Yeah, sorry to interrupt." We turned to see that the man there was Kai Parker, completely in shock. "But what if I told you I had a better idea?"

Kai smirked at our shocked faces, wiggling his fingers in a wave.

As if we hadn't been going through enough shock lately as it was, and now Kai freaking Parker was back.
