Destiny's Bait
Ophelia Dixen stood in front of the mirror with a bright smile on her face as she looked at herself in the delicate white framed mirror. It felt like she reminisced with herself years later but it had been just yesterday when she adored herself before leaving for school, she giggled at her own thoughts.
Jewelry was never Ophelia's forte, and yet there it was-a skillfully carved wedding ring on her finger-it seemed to cloud her. She tried recalling but before she could recapitulate, a soft tender voice distracted her, "Ophelia, time for school."
Ophelia arrived at her school and everyone seemed preoccupied with their own thoughts. It seemed like a normal day but oddly Ophelia kept sensing otherwise. 'Something was out of place' she knew it.
'But what is it? Everything seems...normal.' Ophelia thought as she glanced around the classroom just to find herself fidgeting which drew her attention back to the ring.
It was a silver ring with a shining purple tanzanite skillfully engraved in the centre. The soft sunlight reflected colors off of the stone which seemed calling out to Ophelia as she stared with wonder-lust eyes.
She was lost admiring the stone's beauty when she heard an anxious whisper 'Ophelia'. She was shook but just then the teacher yelled, "OPHELIA" which pulled her out of her day-dream.
She was restless throughout the day, she found gaps in her memory which were perfectly covered up and yet something didn't feel right. She started experiencing uncanny nightmares which mentally scarred her. It all seemed like a recollection of her memories from her past life; a life she very much lived but wasn't aware of.
One night, Ophelia finally fell asleep manifesting her fear of those terrible nightmares- she caught glimpses of her older self; her hair was finely braided and her locks were left open to hang around her neck. Her face glowed as she couldn't take her eyes off her dress. She had matching off white and silver accessories to go with her dress and her head had a tiara of small bright daisies which seemed specifically modified to go with the white dress. An elderly lady approached with an aesthetic white fluffy long skirt whose colour faded into off-white at the lower ends giving a graphite feel. She tied it tightly around Ophelia's waist which gave her the complete fairy look.
The scene changed to her walking down the aisle to a tall, handsome man with messy silver hair. He turned his head around to take a glimpse of his to-be wife and his soft tender smile conveyed how much he loved her.
She stood beside him, her bright smile giving as much warmth as the man's smile when she heard the words, "Zephyr Holyswift, do you take Ophelia Dixen as your wife?"
"I do." A deep soothing voice answered. Ophelia recalled hearing this same voice from the ring.
It was as if the dream fast-forwarded itself to reveal a smiling Ophelia dressed in flowy violet dress, its touch light upon her skin which lifted her spirits as she danced alongside the carefree breeze. Beside her was the love of her life, Zephyr, who played alongside their son who inherited Zephyr's unique silver hair and Ophelia's honeyed eyes. They glanced at each other every now and then expressing the warmth amongst them as they sweetly smiled.
The dream paved way for nightmare as the moment Zephyr's eyes met Ophelia's, panic filled the void of words between them. It was a war, a very destructive one to be specific. Zephyr fought, so did the others but something felt odd. They had powers, Zephyr tore through the wind as he seemed to control the wind somehow.
It all happened so quickly leaving barely enough time for Ophelia to get used to her new surroundings when she looked straight up to see a limping Zephyr whose body was covered in blood as he tried to advance to Ophelia.
"NOOO..." Zephyr's strong voice shouted pointing at Ophelia.
To poor Ophelia, it felt like she was living through this nightmare, flooded tears rolled down her cheeks as she felt herself down on her knees with the bloodied body of her son in her lap as purple and black aura circled around them.
Ophelia closed her eyes tight just to reveal her stone cold hands covered in blood but she had no sight of her son, just Zephyr holding her hands in his as he cried uncontrollably. His grief paved way for anger which paved way for a scope of revenge but before he could take even a step, a blinding white light shone which seemed to have successfully pulled a screaming Ophelia out of her nightmares.
"Zephyr...Zephyr." She mumbled to herself before coming back to consciousness and saw her parents worried as they look at her. At this point, her parents seemed convinced that she needed mental aid and decided to see a therapist for her even though Ophelia argued otherwise.
Ophelia started remembering bit-by-bit phases of her past life. Her parents urged her to visit a therapist which led to a huge argument between them. Ophelia got tired of arguing daily with her parents to prover her point, so she finally decided to see a therapist.
"So, Ophelia...they say you keep on insisting that this isn't your world anymore. Where do you think you are from then?"
"Well, since everybody is so much interested my life, let's get this over with." Ophelia cleared her throat as she started explaining, "So, I stepped through this portal which connects our world straight up with the divine realm. There after days of aimless wandering, I found myself face-to-face with a dragon. I know, sounds unrealistic...but that's technically what you are being paid for. Moving on, I did pick up a few sword fight basics from the natives there and I was so not confident because I was just a student before I entered that realm. Then, I met Zephyr, we slayed that dragon together. Let's phrase it, he saved me."
Ophelia glanced at the therapist who scribbled something down on her notepad and intently listened to Ophelia. The fact that someone was finally listening to her, amused Ophelia as she continued with the story with a few time lapses. She told the therapist every detail she remembered which convinced him that Ophelia wasn't building it all up to have some medical leave.
"So, this portal that you so much mentioned, do you know where it is?"
"Not right now." Looking at the therapist's confused reaction, Ophelia explained, "The portal changes its openings so as to keep their existence safe....but this stone, it glows when I am near the portal, Zephyr told me."
"How about you take a little adventure trip to finding the portal?"
Ophelia was confused but she knew nothing could stop her from doing so. According to the therapist, it would calm her aspirations when she doesn't find such a portal, it would be hard, but she will get over it.
Her parents were reluctant at first but agreed to it for the betterment of their daughter.
The next few days Ophelia meandered about various alleys, abandoned houses and old buildings; to her disappointment, she found nothing, no clues, no traces, no nothing. But Ophelia was hell-bent on not giving up.
She walked to the Sandal River Bridge and leaned over the railing lost in her deep thoughts. She started contemplating, she had her good days but her life wasn't flawless.
She recalled her beginning there, she had to go on with bare minimum food for days, she hadn't seen her parents throughout and when she did, they were brutally murdered at the hands of the realm enemy 'Svetlana'.
Zephyr seemed to be the last string of hope she was holding onto after her parents died. This last string seemed to be disappearing when they almost lost their son during the battle. If not for their son, they both had already given up on themselves.
But along with these grieves, she remembered, how much her parents loved her and sacrificed themselves leaving her in the loving care of her husband. She remembered how Zephyr looked after every need of hers, how he became the pillar which supported her when she had no one to rely on. When their son was in danger, Zephyr never gave up on either of them. The bond of their love was greater than any other.
She remembered how they grew old together, how their son was declared the next ruler and how they spent the rest of the days in search of lost adventure. How they were there for each other at every moment of life.
She recalled sharing every moment and joy along with her husband. She recalled staring into Zephyr's eyes as they just emitted the compassion they felt.
A single crystal tear rolled down her cheek and co-incidentally landed on her wedding ring which changed its colour to bright yellow. This drew Ophelia's attention as she recalled how Zephyr and she enjoyed their youth, middle-age and old age by the Sandal River whenever they visited the mortal realm.
This was her last hope of finding the portal. She ran down by the river bay and crouched on her knees. She felt the swift water run on her soft skin as she dipped her hand in the river. She felt the euphoric feeling as if she drifted to a different world. That's it; that was the portal.
The more overjoyed she grew, the closer she was drawn to the 'What if's' firing right at her. It had been decades since she lived there. Was it even worth it? Even if she found the portal, what exactly were her plans? It had been ages since she died in that realm, nobody would even recognize her.
It was solely her decision now, would she like to go back and start a new life in a different realm or would she live a simple life in the lively and enormous city of Silvia? Her smile faded to a frown. She wasn't sure of anything happening around her.
The portal was the exact proof that her dreams weren't merely dreams. There was more to it. She had seen it all. She had watched people dear to her die in her hands. She had seen and lived every moment of joy and sorrow in her life.
The questions still haunted her, "Was it worth it?"
She withdrew her hand. She was sure that she was supposed to not go in there again. She wasn't supposed to entangle herself with the divinity of another world. As much as she wanted to jump right in, she couldn't relinquish it.
She turned back around with all hope lost and a pouting frown on her face just to see a tall guy with silvery hair and dove eyes staring at her with a confused expression. He panicked as soon as Ophelia turned around, "Oh, no no...it's not what you think. I just thought you'll attempt-so I came to save- I didn't mean to interrupt the moment...I mean...my mistake, Incorrect judgement."
Ophelia just stared at the guy; her eyes conveying a lot, it was as if she had seen the dead. The guy mistook it as confusion and let out a small chuckle as he proceeded, "I know, I sound weird...I am-"
But before the guy could complete his sentence, Ophelia did it for him, "Zephyr...Zephyr Holyswift."
"How did you? Well, I guess my father's reputation exceeds him." The guy chuckled not much surprised as he shyly scratched the back of his head.
"No." Ophelia stupidly answered.
"No?"
Ophelia suddenly fazed back to reality and started looking for ways to save herself, "Your ID." She quickly said as soon as she saw a school ID on him.
It was vivid that Zephyr didn't remember her. Only Ophelia remembered the past. But what if this was supposed to happen? What if this all was just bait set by destiny that Ophelia was supposed to discover?
You don't meet people by accident. There's always reason; lesson or a blessing
