Two
Freya's POV:
"Hey, who wants to go right now?" Artemis challenged some of the guys at her lunch table who were a part of the football and basketball team. "I got you, I got you, I got all of y'all!" She pointed to each of them except for me.
I try to finish scribbling down one of my answers to my homework, but the people at the table began to pound their fists on the table as they chanted 'Go! Go! Go!' while Artemis attempted to arm wrestle the guy next to her which caused me to let out a groan.
I close my binder and shove it in my bag. "I'm moving to a different table." I say to Artemis but she waved her hand dismissively, not even bothering to spare a glance.
I grab my lunch tray and look around for any empty seats, seeing how the tables were all occupied with different groups of students.
My eyes finally land on the table that was near the side of the room, seeing three people at a table with two empty chairs in front of them.
We weren't friends but...it could be worse.
As I approached the table, my eyes slightly widen in realization that the one person I recognized was Yolanda.
Memories from three months ago flashed in my mind, remembering about the backlash she faced with everyone at school.
I awkwardly place my things down next to Yolanda who was eating her salad but didn't try to greet any of them.
I mean, I wasn't friends with any of them so why bother.
I continued to eat the lunch my Dad specifically made for me to fit into his gym diet but shortly after, someone speaks up from behind.
"Hi, I'm Courtney." I turn and see a curly-haired blonde who gave a small smile.
"I'm Beth." The girl with the glasses greeted. It was obvious that Courtney waited for Yolanda and the other guy to introduce themselves but they both stayed silent as they continued to eat their food.
I look back towards my lunch to continue eating and hear Courtney place her things down next to me.
It was silent once more until I took notice of Courtney clasping her hands together. "So, uh, what do you guys do for fun around here?"
Nobody answers her once more which caused me to finally turn to her. "We're not friends." I bluntly state, gesturing to each of us.
Beth nods her head in agreement. "This is the table for the singles."
Courtney furrows her brows in confusion. "The singles?" She repeated.
"The losers." Beth whispered which caused me to roll my eyes in annoyance.
"Speak for yourself." The guy muttered as he grabbed his bag from the floor, leaving his lunch behind but not before stealing a pack of snacks from the carts.
"Do you guys smell that? Smell something?" Another voice spoke up from behind Yolanda which caused her to shift in her seat with an uncomfortable expression.
Henry, the red-haired boy leaned in between Yolanda and me with a smirk towards her as two other football players surrounded our table. "Smells like...slut."
Yolanda avoided his eyes and only stared at the middle of the table, knowing that this wasn't my business. It was only between the two.
"Take any new pictures you'd like to share with us?" Henry continued to taunt.
"Yeah, don't be shy." One of the football players added with a chuckle.
"Leave her alone." Courtney scolded which caused everyone's eyes to land on her.
"Oh, hey, new girl." Henry greeted before reaching across from me to snatch Courtney's phone. "What do you got on your phone?"
"Hey!" She tries to grab it back but he moves his hand away before she could with a chuckle, looking to his friends with an amused expression. "Give that back!" She snatches her phone out of his hands before harshly shoving him to crash against the lunch lady, causing the tray filled with macaroni to spill all over the floor.
The crowd of students all 'oooh' in unison, along with several chuckles as well. "Nice." Henry grumbled as he kicked the tray away from him before he walked away with his friends.
"Come with me." I hear Principal Bowin say which causes me to turn, seeing her escort Courtney out of the cafeteria.
Detention for her first day was not a good look.
I glance over to Yolanda but see that she continued to eat her food, not even caring about the students talking about her once more.
Almost as if she was used to it.

"Hook." My fist connects with the punch mitt. "Two jabs." I punch the right and left mitt, swiftly dodging my dad's attempt at a punch before hitting the mitts three more times which caused him to stumble. "There you go! That's how you do it." He encouraged and I nod, taking a step back to grab my water bottle from the bench.
"Thanks." I rasp before taking a sip.
"So," He takes a seat on the bench. "I heard you're having the nightmares again."
Dammit, mom. "Yeah uh...I've been writing down what I could remember from the dream."
He shook his head with disappointment. "Not this again, Freya."
"I tried explaining it to mom, but once I write down all I can remember, maybe Dr. King can help me figure it out."
"You shouldn't put all of your attention to that. What you should be doing that would help you is taking down notes about Henry's actions. I heard about what happened at school."
I roll my eyes. "Nothing happened. It was just some new girl trying to be the hero for a girl Henry dated." I muttered before taking another sip and grabbed one of the clean small towels to wipe the sweat off of my neck. "The same ridiculous routine that Henry does."
"I know you don't like spying but all of this will pay off in the future. Your training is slightly improving which shows that I know we can do more." He says as he gestured for me to go on the floor. "Come on, we'll start with push-ups before we run the mile in the town square."
My eyes slightly widened. "We just finished the combat session."
"You know that the Dragon King's daughter was practically trained at birth so we need to catch you up to speed." My dad explained as he took off his boxing gloves. "You need to be past her level."
"Can't we just do this tomorrow? I'm sore and I got a lot of homework that I need to finish."
"'You gotta want pain, you gotta make pain your friend.' That's what your grandpa used to tell me" My dad patted my shoulders before he gestured for me to get into position. "You need to do at least fifty like Artemis."
FIFTY? That's it. "That's it, I'm going on a walk." I muttered before grabbing my house keys from the desk. "I need a break."
"Freya! You don't leave in the middle of Crusher's session!" My dad shouted but I had already begun to walk out of his gym. "Freya!"
I shove my hands inside my pockets as I continued to walk further and further away from the building.
Why do my parents make it seem like they want me to completely forget about the nightmares? They're practically banning me from looking more into it! Especially the comparison between Artemis and I. Ugh.
This was one of the things that irked me about my parents. How I had to be a part of a sports team for our school. How I had to have the same diet as her. How I had to run the same amount of miles as her. How I had to be as smart as her.
I mean, don't get me wrong. Artemis is my sister and of course, I'm proud of how she's the only girl on the football team but...I don't remember a time where they didn't praise me for something that I did.
I guess the only thing they'll ever care about is if I get a seat at the Injustice Society's table.
The sounds of laughter come from nearby and I turn, seeing that I was walking closer to the drive-in theater from the side. Judging by the sound from the movie that the theater was showing, it had to be The Goonies.
"Brian. Brian, chill, chill, chill." I turn my head at call and see Henry with the same guys from the cafeteria on top of his car. "Throw, throw, throw! Throw it now, do it." Suddenly, Henry chucks his drink at the vehicle next to them, the contents splattering all over the sides which causes me to roll my eyes as they laughed to themselves.
"Hey, knock it off, assholes!" I hear someone else shout who wasn't too far away from their car. "We're trying to watch the movie, it's a classic!"
Soon enough, Henry and his two friends hop out of the car and sprint toward the guy's car, seeing them begin to harass him as well.
Before I could walk away, someone in a blue hoodie with what seemed like a bright staff, dashes behind the cars until they reached Henry's car.
I could've sworn I've seen that staff before.
From where I stood, I couldn't get a good look of their face since half of it was covered with a bandana.
"What the...?" I whisper, seeing that they began to unscrew a cap from the tire until I realized that they were letting the air out of the tires. "Oh."
Once the person finished deflating the front tire, they quickly moved to the back tire, continuing to use the sharpened staff to air out the tire.
"Hey! Somebody's messing with your car!" One of Henry's friends shouted as he marched his way over to the vehicle.
Like a deer in the headlights, the masked person slowly stands up from their spot and I knew that they were practically done for.
However, the masked person's staff suddenly forces them forward, causing the edge of the stick to slam against the boy's chest which caused him to fall flat on the ground with a groan.
"Travis!"
The staff in their hands emitted a bright glow at the action as Henry and his other friend ran to Travis' aid.
Well, except for Henry since he ran to the vehicle. "Oh, my dad's car!" He quickly checked the sides, sighing in relief before he angrily turned back to the masked person, tapping his friend's shoulder. "Come on."
The masked person slowly backs away but once the bottom of the staff hit the ground, it brightly glowed, causing Henry's friend to smack right into the staff and collapse to the ground as he painfully rubbed his eyes.
"I'm gonna kill you." Henry growled and tries to charge forward again, but the masked person flips over and slams him to the ground with the staff. The person almost falls face-flat but the staff hovers from the ground, almost as if it was holding the person up which caused my eyes to widen.
Was that even possible?
The staff forces them to stand properly, but Henry's friend quickly stands up from their spot with an angered expression. He lunges forward as Henry tries to stand as well, but the masked person quickly smacks the end of the staff against Henry's face and uses the sharper end to flip his friend back to the floor.
Travis lets out a huff, seeing both Henry and his friend were groaning in pain. "You're dead, kid."
The next thing I knew, the sharper end of the staff lit up brighter than before, and a burst of light surges towards Travis. He quickly ducks out of the way but the blast of energy hits Henry's car, causing it to burst into flames.
I cover my eyes at the explosion, taking a couple of steps back as the heat became overwhelming.
"Crap!" I hear the masked person yelp before they start to run towards where I was nearby.
I quickly hide nearby the bushes and see the masked person yank off their hood, revealing their blonde curls as they continued to sprint in the direction where I had walked from.
Letting curiosity get the best of me, I followed after them but stuck to following through the side since the bushes were my cover.
"Bad stick! Bad!" I hear her shout as she slowed down which caused me to furrow my brows in confusion. "We were only supposed to let the air out of their tires!"
The staff hums in response which caused the girl to groan. She yanks off the bandana, my eyes widening in recognition. Courtney?
The staff hums once more, practically ripping itself out of her grip until it floated in front of her. "What are you doing? Someone can see you!"
It shakes in front of her, indicating for her to grab and she shakes her head with disbelief, gripping the staff with both of her hands. I watch in awe as the staff lifts her from the ground which earns a shriek to escape from her lips as they flew in the sky.
What just happened?
