Twenty-Three

Freya's POV:

"It came to me last night but I said I couldn't go out so this morning I went to check on it and saw that it was gone! I double-checked the crate, Pat's workshop, but nothing! I can't find it anywhere." Courtney rubbed the sides of her head in frustration as we walked through the town. "And Mike basically told me to get lost because he wanted to know what Pat and I were talking about."

My eyes soften. "I'm sorry, Court."

"We have to find the staff, get everyone else, and take the fight to Jordan." She says but stops me from walking. "My mom wants me to leave Blue Valley today."

"Courtney, maybe this is a sign." I cross my arms with discomfort. "Without the staff, do we even stand a chance?"

"How could you even say that?" She shook her head with disbelief. "I thought you--"

"Freya! Courtney!" I hear Henry's voice echo in my head which causes Courtney and I to look around until I finally see Henry stand nearby the coffee shop.

Crap.

We quickly cross the street once we see there weren't any cars coming and cautiously walk up to him. "Henry?"

"I have so much to say, I don't even know where to start." He places a hand on my shoulder and instantly my vision turns white, causing me to grab ahold of Courtney's arm.

There were flashbacks of Dr. King being in a hospital bed, along with his voice echoing in my head. "We killed them." Flashbacks of Henry's perspective of watching recorded tapes of his father, "Including Merri's brother, Starman. Damn you, Jordan." It then transitions into him spying on Jordan, his father, and I leaving the hospital with the Cosmic Staff. "Merri is dead."

The vision instantly cuts off and returned to normal, but I stumble against the wall to catch my balance. "What the--"

"Look, I-I'm sorry!" Henry stammered, his eyes worriedly darting between Courtney and I. "I-I don't know what that was. I--"

"I could see everything you were thinking." Courtney scolded as she helped me stand to my feet which caused my eyes to widen.

"You saw it too?" I question.

"Only parts of it, but...your dad's awake?" She questioned as she looked at Henry and he nods. "A-And your mom was Starman's sister?"

"Yeah."

"You're my cousin?" Courtney questioned and she released my arm. "We're family." She quickly pulls him into a hug and he lets out a grunt at the sudden contact.

"Uh..." I awkwardly cough. "can you guys do the family reunion after?"

"Right, sorry." Courtney cleared her throat as she pulled away.

"Jordan has your staff. And my dad." He emphasized but her eyes widen.

"Henry, your dad knows who I am. He said he was going to kill my mom--"

"He can't remember anything from the last ten years." He interrupted, trying to ease her stress but she furrowed her brows in confusion. "He doesn't remember anything since the day my mother died. I think it hurts him too much."

"So that's good!" I spoke up and Courtney gives me a look. "Well, sad for Henry but good that he forgot about your identity."

"Anyway," Courtney clears her throat. "I need to get my staff back."

"And I need to save my dad." He added but my eyes widen slightly in shock. "He's different. I think my mom was starting to change him. I saw it...I felt it. I bet that's why Jordan killed her."

"He killed your mom and my dad." Courtney clenched her jaw. "We are going to need help, too."

"Do we even need help? Freya knows where they took him." Henry pointed to me which caused my eyes to widen.

"What? No, I don't." I quickly deny.

"I saw you walk out with Jordan and my dad. Shouldn't you know where they took him?"

Before I could argue, Courtney steps in. "You probably saw wrong, but it's okay. We know the tunnels they use to meet in secret but we need to talk to the others." She pulled his arm, practically dragging him as I follow behind.

"Way to go, guys. You've just given away our identities to the enemy." Rick retorted sarcastically once Courtney and Henry caught them up about Brainwave being awake.

I, on the other hand, stayed quiet as I continued to peel my orange.

"Henry's not the enemy." Courtney argued but Yolanda let out a scoff.

"Yes, he is."

"Look, if it helps, she didn't tell me anything. I read her mind." Henry tried to explain which caused me to pinch the bridge of my nose in annoyance.

"You're digging yourself a hole, dumbass." I mutter before I cleared my throat. "He's not going to do that anymore to us."

"That's only polite." Beth smiled but instantly Yolanda glares at her.

"Listen, my mom wants me and her to leave town today. Forever." Courtney admitted which caused their eyes to widen.

"No. You can't go." Beth worriedly spoke.

"I know, but if we find the staff and are able to stop the ISA, maybe we can not only save the town...but we can also save Pat and my mom." She explained but Rick shook his head with disbelief.

"And save this dirtbag's dad?" He pointed to Henry.

"Rick." I warned but he avoided my eyes, keeping them directly to Courtney.

"If Brainwave gets his memories back, he'll kill you first, but then we're next." He pointed to Courtney first before he pointed to the four of us. "He'll figure out all of our identities unless Junior here gives us up first."

Henry clenched his jaw. "I'm not telling anybody anything."

"We all know if we find Brainwave, we should break him in two while we can." He continued, looking to us for reassurance and Yolanda nods in agreement.

In all honesty, if we did take out Brainwave for good, this would protect my cover. I wouldn't have to worry about him exposing me to Jordan and all we would need is Henry.

"I think Rick might be right, Court." I spoke up as I put the peels in my tray. "It's too risky."

"You're not gonna hurt my dad." Henry muttered with a glare.

"Yeah? Try and stop me." Rick challenged.

"Rick." Courtney warned but he stood up from his chair anyway.

"How 'bout you try, right now?" He tilted his head, waiting for Henry to stand up from his chair.

"Sit down." Henry muttered under his breath.

"Stand up."

Henry looks down at Rick's tray which caused my eyes to widen. "Henry, knock it--" I grab his arm but instantly a strike of pain rings through my mind which causes me to clutch onto the sides of my head.

The next thing I knew, the tray of food smacks right onto Rick's chest, sending him to collapse backward at the impact.

Everyone in the cafeteria gasps at the sudden action but Beth quickly stands up from her spot. "No worries! Just...ignore us like you usually do."

"Freya," Yolanda worriedly shook my shoulder but the pain diminished and I turn my head to face her.

"I'm okay." I whisper but her expression twisted into anger before she stood up from her spot.

"I told you to stay away, to not touch my friends." She angrily spoke which caused Henry to stand and back away from her. "You know what I'll do to you."

"Hey," Courtney scolded as she stood in between them. "Save it for the bad guys."

"Henry is the bad guy, Court." She argued and Rick stood behind Yolanda with a glare.

"No way I'm working with him." He remarked.

"What about Pat? What's Pat think of all this?" Beth questioned, trying to ease the tension.

"I think he's with my mom." Courtney let out a sigh. "She was so mad."

I rubbed the side of my head. "As much as I hate to admit it, but we have to get the staff back." I spoke up and Beth nods in agreement. "Who knows what they'd do to that thing."

"For Court."

Yolanda turns to me, her eyes worriedly examining me before she turned to Courtney. "The only reason I'm agreeing to do this is because I know you'll do it anyway and Freya's going to follow to make sure you don't get yourselves killed. You need someone to watch your guys' backs." She emphasized, making sure she kept her eyes on Henry for the last sentence before she looked back to her. "You chose Henry over me, after all he did."

"Yolanda--"

"We're not friends anymore." Yolanda interrupted me as she kept her stares on Courtney before she took a step away from her.

My phone buzzes in my pocket which causes me to quickly pull it out, seeing the word Unknown in the contact name.

"I'll—uh, see you guys after school." I say as I grab my bag from the floor. "My sister wants me to meet up with her."

I leave without hearing their responses and walk towards the gym since I knew nobody usually went in there during lunch.

Before I could open the door, I check behind me just in case and then pull open the door, shutting it behind me.

I answer the call and move my phone against my ear. "Jordan." I greet.

"I've got your message so this better be good."

"Henry thinks his father can be saved. If you want Brainwave back, you better start the memory recovery process now because he's looking for him." I crossed my arms.

"When?"

"I'm assuming after school." I answer, trying to stretch my arm but instantly feel a strike of pain on my shoulder which causes me to wince.

"You assume?" He scoffed.

"Well, I didn't exactly get the specifics. Look, I'm just giving you a heads up about their plans. I could've easily just kept it from you, you know." I remark.

"Just like how I could've easily killed you in the hospital. How's your shoulder doing, by the way?" Instantly strikes of pain traveled across my shoulder which causes me to let out a cry but I quickly lean against the bench to catch my balance. "You and I both know that's not even the worst I could've done." I move my sleeve up, seeing the large patch of the burn extend on my shoulder as the ice diminished.

That asshole left bits of the ice from last night?

I grit my teeth. "So you understand why I'm not revealing their identities."

"Once Brainwave remembers, it won't matter anymore."

"But you don't know the others." I counter. It's silent for a moment and I smirk, knowing that he knew I was right. "You technically still need me so you can't kill me."

"Just report back to me if you find out more."

Before I could answer back, he ends the call which causes me to chuckle. I look back down at my shoulder, seeing the patch of red skin and I cringe at the sight.

I place my bag down and walk over to one of the cabinets, seeing a couple of folded rags. God, I hope they're clean.

I walk over to the sink and turn on the hot water, placing the rag underneath.

As I waited for it to warm up, I slip off my sweatshirt which left me only in a tank top and I place it over my other shoulder.

"So..." I jump at the voice and see Yolanda with her arms crossed as her eyes were on me. "What happened with meeting your sister?"

"She canceled." I casually answer. "So I came in here instead."

She raises a brow. "Really?"

"Yup." I turn around and grab the rag from the sink before shutting off the water.

"What happened to your shoulder?"

I look behind with a teasing smile. "Someone's nosey."

"Well, who wouldn't be if someone saw the burns all over your shoulder?"

"If you must know, it was a training accident with my dad." I answer and place the hot rag over the wound, but instantly hiss at the sting which causes me to retract it away. "Agh."

"Here, let me help." She offered, grabbing the rag from my hand and gestured for me to sit down on the bench.

I reluctantly sit down, embarrassed at the fact I was too much of a wuss to do this myself.

"You know, you tell me that you exercise with your dad a lot but...should I be concerned about what you guys do?" She asked before she applied the rag on the wound which causes me to grunt. "Sorry."

"I don't want to talk about it." I mumble. "It doesn't look as bad as you think."

"Freya, these are old and fresh burns." She pointed to the scars with a look of annoyance. "What do your parents teach you that involves burning your shoulder?"

"I just said I don't want to talk about it, okay?" I harshly remark but instantly regret it, seeing as she flinched at the tone. "I'm sorry, it's just...not yet."

She nods with a small smile. "It's okay."

"If anything, I should be asking if you're okay." I look forward again so she could continue. "I know that seeing Henry every day is hard enough but having him join the team? I'm sure that opened some old wounds."

"It just...hurt when Courtney brought him in the team." She grabs the extra bandages in her bag and starts to wrap them around my arm so she wouldn't have to hold it anymore. "After everything, I told you guys about what he did. That's why I'm worried he'll betray her because he did the same to me. I mean, look what he just did in the cafeteria...he hurt you." She softly spoke.

"And Rick." I pointed out.

Her eyes widen slightly. "W-Well yeah, but it was just food splattered on his clothes."

I furrow my brows in confusion. "You don't have to worry about my safety, you know that right? I can take care of myself."

Her eyes trail to my bandaged shoulder with concern. "Can you?"

"I'm surprised you're worried about me this much." I tease.

"Says the girl who sent me a sappy text but ended it with 'LOL'." She tightens the knot on the wrap which causes me to grunt as she took a seat next to me.

"What's so bad about adding 'LOL'? I was being nice!"

She furrowed her brows in confusion. "Freya, what do you think it means?"

My eyes narrow. "Lots of love?" The corners of her mouth perk up but she quickly covers her mouth, failing to stifle the giggle that escaped from her lips. "What's so funny?"

"Freya, 'LOL' means laugh out loud. You usually add that when you respond to something funny."

Oh. "I'm never texting again." I mumble but the smile never left her expression.

"Anyway," She shook her head with amusement before she looked up to me. "I'd say you're the one that's more worried than me."

"I didn't know it was bad to check up on someone I like." I tilt my head with an amused expression. "I'll give you a heads up next time, I guess."

The corners of her mouth perk up once more. "You like me?"

I furrow my brows in confusion. "Well, we're friends aren't we?" I question, feeling her pinky brush against mine. "Or teammates, whichever you prefer. I don't know which is better. I--"

"Freya." I feel her hand place on top of mine. "I'm messing with you."

I look up, seeing her eyes flicker at my lips before she quickly averted her eyes to mine. She holds her gaze and I realized how close we were sitting to one another on the bench, feeling my heart begin to beat a little faster.

Why did this feel so weird? I mean, it wasn't like a bad weird. Should my heart be beating this fast? Should I even be feeling this nervous?

The sounds of the school bell breaks me out of my thoughts and I quickly scoot away from her.

"I-I should--"

"Me too." I cough, quickly sliding my sweatshirt over my head. "I'll see you--"

"After school." She interrupted before she quickly walked out of the gym without another word.

A/N:

Hello! So I've been doing the math on the releases for the chapters compared to when Stargirl airs aaaand

Stargirl season 2 is premiering on august 10 which means the last chapter of this book will be published may 22nd which is a bit ehhhh

I'm ehhh about it, because it's sort of hard to include Freya into the storyline when I have to wait for the episodes to air once a week LOL So I'll give u guys some options.

Would you rather have me update once a week for now just so it gives me time to update while the series airs

Or

Keep how the update streak is going and try to update as the episodes air. ((As this is going on, updates WILL be slow at that point bc of the airing schedule AND because of being a college student that has to keep up with the work💀)))

That's all I have for you guys today! I hope you had/have a great day! Bye!
