Thirty-Two
Freya's POV:
I turn towards my mom, watching as she was thrown across the room by Yolanda. I sprint towards her before she could continue her attacks and kick Yolanda's hip, causing her to roll away.
She quickly pushes herself up with a glare but I protectively held my daggers up. "Yolanda," I click the buttons on my gloves which causes it to retract the blades and I innocently held my hands up. "it doesn't have to be like this."
She huffs and lunges to slash her claws on my stomach but I block the attack on time and strike a punch against her stomach. She lets out a grunt as she took a step back but I push her to press her back against the wall. "I don't want to hurt you."
She tries to swing but I catch her wrist and press my arm against her throat. "All you would need to do is get everyone else out of here and leave." I grunt as she fought against my grasp.
"You and I both know that's not going to happen." She remarked. "And it's kind of too late for that."
She flips us around, slamming my head against the wall before her claws retract and swiftly hold me by the throat. "I didn't have a choice." I manage to choke out. "I didn't want Artemis to die."
"But you still had us to help you, Freya. You knew that." She emphasized with a glare, squeezing my throat a bit. "I should hate you for letting you in when you knew that I'm still hurting from before but...you and Henry taught me to forgive and I want to forgive." I try to fight her grasp but she stayed put. "You've had way more opportunities to tell us and I understand why you hesitated. You didn't trust us, but you still can. You have a family here, you have me. You'll always have me."
My eyes softened. "I do?"
Instantly my mom tackles Yolanda from her side, holding her arm up as she held her the side of her face against the floor. "Freya!" My mom scolded as she tossed me one of my ring daggers and it skidded in front of me. "Your real family abandoned you so what makes you think they won't do the same after today? Get out of your head and finish the job."
I grab it from the floor but dizzily walk over to Yolanda with the dagger tightly clutched onto my hand, remembering the painful memory of when I read the documents about my parents.
"I meant what I said, Freya, I promise." She grunted as my mom pulled her arm further, sinking her more into the ground. "Agh—You might've lied about who you are but I know deep down that you were yourself around us. If they were your family, why would they push your limits to go as far as to hurt you? The burns you showed me, that isn't from training. That's from torture."
"Don't listen to her." My mom scolded as she threateningly inched her claws close to Yolanda's throat. "Freya, kill a JSA member and you'll be guaranteed a spot you've been after for years in the ISA. Your destiny."
"Can't you see what's in front of you? This isn't your destiny and you know it." Yolanda pleaded as my eyes flickered between them. "You weren't born to be a part of the ISA, you were born to be Doctor Fate. You're a hero! You're my hero!"
As soon as those three words escaped her lips, a painful ache struck across my head which causes me to stumble forward.
"Freya!" Is the last thing I hear before my surroundings shift into a different setting.
"Stay behind the bus." I hear myself say to Joey, watching as he quickly sat down and leaned his back against the cemented railing. "Are you okay?"
"You...You saved me." He heavily pants with relief.
I hesitantly shake my head, rubbing my hands together to try to keep warm. "Not really. My hand slipped."
He quickly shook his head as he nervously fiddled with his cards. "No, no, before that. We could've died way before that if you didn't grab my hand."
"Oh. Well then...I guess I did." I say and he gives a small smile.
"You're a hero."
I blink a few times and turn to see Pat and Courtney, struggling to fight off Jordan as he shot his ice blasts towards them while the Dragon King and Justin had their swords pressed together as one tried to overpower the other.
I turn behind me and look around, seeing as my dad threw Rick off to the side, causing him to collapse to the ground with a grunt.
"Freya, please." I hear Yolanda plead from behind.
"You and Yolanda, obviously." Courtney gestured to the house and I move my finger away from the button. "Something is going on between you two but you guys won't do anything!"
"What? Where did you even come up with that?" I furrow my brows in confusion but she rolls her eyes in annoyance. "Nothing is going on between us."
She scoffed. "There have been some moments where you two act like an awkward couple."
"A couple of friends."
"Friends don't act like the way you two act." She countered. "It's okay if you feel something for her, you know. It's better to be honest with her."
"Let's say I do." I turn to look at the forest. "Telling her now would be the worst timing, especially since she's heartbroken over Henry and dealing with the ISA right now."
"I never said you had to ask her out. You can just tell her how you feel so she at least knows." She elbows my side. "Sometimes the truth makes things easier instead of holding it back for so long."
"Quit standing there like an idiot and kill her! Do what your father and I set up for you!" My mom growled. "You're already a failure so do it!"
"You're nothing like them, Freya. You and my father could've easily ratted me out to Jordan but you didn't. You care about the people in Blue Valley. You're a hero."
"I don't care about anyone, I'm not a hero," I hiss and rip my hand out of his hold. "and you don't know anything about me."
"You could've easily outed everyone's identities if you didn't care." He countered. "Am I right?"
I continue to walk. "I have my reasons why I haven't yet."
"Bullshit. You don't want them to die." He pointed to Courtney and Yolanda before he turned to me again. "Tell me, what has the ISA ever done for you?"
I rub the sides of my head with a grunt, the piercing sound of a ring pulsing through my ears.
"Beth, you haven't even gotten a glimpse of what the Injustice Society are capable of." I say and lower my sleeve to expose the burns on my back. "Icicle did this when I argued with him so imagine if I decided to quit. He wouldn't hesitate to kill me for wasting his time."
"That's why you have us. That's why you're a part of the Justice Society." Beth whispered as she gestured inside. "Look, I don't want to be the one to expose your secret, but they deserve the truth from you and it has to be tomorrow because who knows what'll happen. It's better not to hear it from someone else."
I guiltily look down at my hands. "I know."
She walks over to the door but just before she could open it, she looks back at me. "I know you're worried and I'm sure the ISA engraved in your head about their views of what they want from you but have you ever took the time to ask yourself? Who are you and what do you want?"
All these years of working to be a part of the ISA wasn't even something I wanted. It was something they wanted...a killer. When I was pretending to be with the JSA, it felt genuine. I was a part of a family.
Not even my parents treated me like I was a part of their family with the lack of pictures in the house. They never wanted me.
"Snap out of it or I'll do it for you!" My mom shouts, breaking me out of my thoughts.
I tightly grip on the weapon in my hands and throw the dagger directly to my mom's abdomen which causes her to let out a cry of pain as she stumbled back, releasing the grip on Yolanda.
Yolanda swiftly gets back on her feet and strikes a punch across my mom's jaw, causing her to roll across the floor.
"I'm sorry." I immediately say but Yolanda quickly runs past me. "What are you--"
She picks up the Helmet of Fate from the ground and places it over my head, instantly transforming my clothes back into the Doctor Fate suit. "Better."
"I know it's going to take a while for you to trust me again, but--"
"It is." She crossed her arms. "I'm--"
From behind, I could see my mom sprinting towards us with her claws raised. "Duck." I cut her off.
She instantly ducks down and I aim my hand toward my mom which fires a blast of energy at her and sends her to slam her head against the cemented wall before she laid unconscious on the floor.
Yolanda lets out a breath. "Nice."
I turn around, seeing Jordan sneakily try to aim his hands towards Rick who was barely recovering from my dad's attacks which caused me to glare.
I sprint towards him and body-check him against the cemented pole, causing his head to slam against it. "What the hell are you doing?" He grunts.
I hold him up by the collar of his shirt. "Sticking with my team." I remark before I strike a punch across his jaw, causing him to stumble to the side where Yolanda stood.
She quickly throws him across the floor but as he tried to push himself up, Courtney smacks the end of her staff under his jaw which springs his body upward, and harshly slams his back on the stairs.
I look around, seeing both of my parents knocked unconscious but from behind, blood spilled out from the Dragon King's chest. Nearby, Justin was unconscious as well with his sword by his side.
"Decided to switch sides?" Rick remarked as he shoved me away. "Give me one reason why I shouldn't kick your ass."
"If we're being honest, you were the one who ended up on the floor." I harshly remark before I hold up my hands in surrender. "But I'm done with the ISA, I swear."
"I knew I shouldn't have trusted you." Jordan grunted which caused the rest of us to turn towards him as he weakly backed away from us.
The four of us, including Pat in his STRIPE suit, slowly approach Jordan with a glare which causes him to stop.
The suit lifts its robotic arm, prepping to slam its fist but instantly is knocked back into the cemented pole. We quickly turn, my eyes widening at the large monstrous sight of Solomon Grundy.
Everyone slowly turns towards me with looks of annoyance. "Okay, I called him before I switched sides." I explain as I innocently held my hands up.
He lets out a roar which causes Courtney, Yolanda, and I to back away in fear but Rick, on the other hand, stood in his place with his fists clenched.
"Don't." Courtney warned him as she worriedly glanced between him and Grundy.
Rick lets out a battle cry as he charged towards him but instantly Grundy smacks him away and he crashes into the wooden planks.
"Rick!"
"Get to the machine, Courtney!" We turn towards the STRIPE suit as it slowly pushed itself up. "I've got Grundy! I'll protect Rick! Go do what we came here to do!" Pat says before he grabs a hold of Grundy and pushes him out of the room.
"Court, we need to go. Come on." I urge and she reluctantly nods before we sprint to the door that had the keypad next to it.
"Please tell me they trusted you enough with the code." Courtney spoke as she turned to me with a look of annoyance but I shook my head. "Great."
"I got it." Yolanda walked up to the keypad and extended her claws. She slashes at the keypad which instantly shot out small sparks before it shut off completely.
I push open the door with a smile. "Nice."
Yolanda and I start to head inside but hear Courtney grunt which causes me to turn and see Cindy, attempting to use her wrist daggers to slash Courtney's throat but the staff blocked the attack.
"Court!" Yolanda tries to help but I grab her arm so she wouldn't move. "What are you doing?"
"On the other side of those doors is Brainwave and the Dragon King's goons." I explain as I gesture behind us. "If we want to stop the machine, we need to go or else it'll be too late to stop it."
"She's right!" Courtney grunted. "Go!" Yolanda groans in reluctance and shuts the door behind her.
Once we turn to face forward, we're instantly met with almost a dozen of the Dragon King's henchmen as they stumbled their way towards us.
Yolanda extends her claws and I watch as she sprints towards them, letting out a battle cry as she slashed her claws across their chests.
I strike a punch across what I assumed was their cheek, causing the henchman to stumble into another.
I grab the other henchman by his cloak and bashed their head against the wall before I turned to the next one and elbow their chest so they could take a step back.
My hands light up and I blast each henchman that tried to swing their hands to me until I feel one of them wrap their arms around my body to hold me in place.
Thankfully, it doesn't last very long once Yolanda finished off one of the henchmen and saw what was happening. She slashes her claws across the henchman's back, causing his grips to loosen enough for me to get out of their hold and drive the heel of my foot to his back so he would stay on the floor.
I look away, seeing that there was only one left as he nervously stood at the end of the hallway.
Yolanda starts to approach the henchman as he shakily held his hands up. "Wait, wait! Yolanda!" The henchman spoke up and before she could strike, they yank off the hood which causes my eyes to widen in shock.
That's impossible.

"Henry?" Yolanda whispered, her claws retracting back to her hands before she jumped into his arms, pulling him in for a hug. "Henry!"
I start to walk towards them with a smile but instantly I'm thrown against the wall. I frantically look around but the invisible force continuously throws me back and forth against the wall before I land flat on my stomach with a groan.
"Stop!" I hear Yolanda worriedly call. "What are you doing?"
I dizzily blink a few times, my vision adjusting to my surroundings as something trickles down my nose. I lift my mask a bit to brush my fingers across and I look down, seeing the smeared blood on my gloves.
"She's on their side, Yolanda. She betrayed you." He emphasized with a glare before he turned towards her. "We need to get out of here. My dad, h-he's coming."
"W-What? I-I don't understand—"
"The cave-in didn't kill me, my dad didn't either." He grabbed her hands with a worrisome-filled expression. "I've been hiding, wearing these clothes for days. Pretending to be one of them."
I try to push myself up but instantly feel another force clasp around my throat, causing me to let out a choked gasp as I sink further into the floor. "Y-Yolanda." I barely utter out in a whisper.
She tries to turn to me but Henry cups the side of her cheek to face him. "I know where my dad is, and how we can stop him." He persisted and she slowly nodded. "You remember what I said? How I was sorry for everything?"
"Yeah." Yolanda softly whispered.
"You're all I've been thinking about...this whole time."
My vision starts becoming hazy but the figure that stood in front of Yolanda glitched between Henry and Brainwave which caused my eyes to widen.
"B-Br—" I cut myself off with a wheeze as I desperately clawed at my throat.
"Henry I don't--"
"What's the plan?" He interrupted, moving his hand away from her cheek. "Where are your friends?"
I slowly lay my head back on the ground as my eyes rolled to the back of my head but the sound of Yolanda's claws causes me to raise my head again.
She instantly swipes her claws across his throat, the walls instantly splattered by blood as he stumbled backward.
I feel the hold on my throat loosen which causes me to let out a gasp as I caught my breath.
"They were Henry's friends, too." She darkly remarked as he sank to the floor, revealing Brainwave's form.
My vision blurs between reality and the darkness as I shakily push myself up from the floor.
"I watched Henry die." Yolanda continued which caused me to look up, seeing as she took a step closer to him. "And now, I'm going to watch you die."
A sharp ringing pierces in my ears, cause me to clutch the sides of my head with my hands as I sank back to the ground.
"Freya?" I hear someone's voice echo before it all turns black. "Freya?"
