Chapter 1: Arrogant Ass

A 17 year old girl, with messy red hair caked in mud, perched on a tree branch clutching a throwing knife doesn't sound like any normal day to day activity but for me it was the only thing I knew.

Ever since my parents died I've been on the run because I know that as soon as I stop and let my guard down I will be at mercy to the legion.

The legion are a group of specially trained warriors pledged to hunt down anomalies like me.

They won't stop until we no longer exist to live. I however, am making it very difficult for them to achieve their goal.

I have been told I'm more special than all the others of my kind because I was born under a dark moon yada yada yada, I dont believe in that rubbish.

They probably just felt bad for me when I lost my parents and made up a story to try help me grieve better.

Anyways this is why I spend most of my time on alert, constantly aware of my surroundings because one slip up can cost me everything.

I mark the tree with a quick slash of my knife as I run in-between them while dragging a deer that I caught earlier.

I was marking my hunting routes for when I next need to go hunting. I really hated hunting, having to watch an animal so beautiful grow limp and the spark in its eyes disappear into oblivion.

But the world doesn't care about beauty, its about survival and in order for my people to survive, they needed to eat.

For a split second I was away in my thoughts, too busy to notice the tree stump until it was too late and I was sprawled on the ground clutching my now aching shoulder.

I have to be more careful one more mistake like that could cost me big time. The legion don't make mistakes, they're combat skills are lethal, they're the perfect warriors.

Annoyed I got up and continued my trek through the grassy forest until I came across the big oak tree covered in bright purple petals with the smallest symbol embedded on the trunk, standing in the middle of the forest.

It has been on this planet for many generations and overtime it has grown worn. Nobody would expect what it was helping keep hidden. I take a moment to giggle to myself at the thought of how devious we fae can be, sneaking around just under the legions notice. It entices me sometimes.

I pressed my hand to the symbol on the trunk and a ray of purple spreads across my hand until it reaches the tree, lighting it up like a wildfire, illuminating it until every fiber of the tree was lit up with purple essence.

Watching this always seemed to calm me down a little that is, until the portal  opened up inside the tree and in the middle of it was Logan's head, grinning at me.

"So Luna what you got for me today" he gets more and more arrogant every day. I rolled my eyes as I quickly tossed him the deer, then after stopping to get one quick scan of the area to check it was safe, I jumped into the portal.

As soon as I stepped out the portal I was greeted with the sound of music, just like any other normal day and normally it would lighten up my mood but today it did nothing.

The music was coming from the center of the village, just outside the market place where all the items that are scavenged are sold. The sweet melody of the music began to soothe my ears as I walked through the village.

The village was made up of a dirt path that lead you all throughout the village and the houses were purely made out of nature, trees, moss, dirt, grass, the lot. The five founding fae built this village with their own magic, they were the most powerful fae to walk among this earth. Nobody knows where the founding fae are, it is rumored that there was a dispute between them so they all fled and went their separate ways.

The sounds of children laughing and playing grew near and I watched as they ran past me, oblivious to the war going on outside this sanctuary. A small smile began to spread across my face as I watched the children chase one another, pulling out parlor tricks they had been taught by Madame Marrow, the village teacher.

I could feel myself yearning to go back to those times when I was a child, running around with my friends carefree, not needing to worry about the legion 24/7. Now the only fun I get close enough to do is sleep and that's mandatory. I wanted more.

A finger lightly nudged my shoulder and I turned my head to see Logan giving me the weirdo eyes.

"Finally your out of la la land, I've been talking to you for the past five minutes and I got more of a response from that bird in the tree above than I did from you" He continued to complain for most of the walk into the heart of the village.

I scowled at Logan; he is the same age as me, with dark black hair, chocolaty brown eyes, a muscular body to make all the fae's mouths in this village drop to the floor. Now you might be thinking, don't you think he's kinda cute? My answer to that is hell yes if he didn't open that big mouth of his because as soon as he does he goes and ruins it with his ego.

Logan gives me one of his signature smirks, I continue scowling, waiting for him to give me my deer back. When it finally dawned on me that he had no attention to give it back I slowly approached him.

I gave him the death glare as I approached closer, squaring my shoulders and cracking my knuckles "you have three seconds to give me what I caught or so help me to god I'm going to shove my knife up your ass."

It just so happened that as soon as the words spilled out my mouth I slipped on some ice one of the children managed to spell up and fell flat on my ass.

This just added more fuel to Logan's ego as he stood there bent over slightly, laughing.

"Yeah? With what army soggy pants" I glared, I really never thought I could have so much hate for one person. Even when we were children we were sworn enemies, continuously practicing spells that Madame Marrow taught us on each other.

Groaning, I got up and wiped myself down, great another fall, may as well have just stayed down there. I could feel the cheeks on my face glow red with embarrassment, doesn't help that my hair is bright red as well, just makes my red cheeks stand out more.

I mumble something not entirely polite under my breath to Logan then started heading towards my living quarters. If he wanted the deer as his catch then that didn't bother me, saves me having to check it into the market.

I make my way around the healers hut when I bump straight into Willow, the eldest member in this village and the only one that knew the five founders.

She smiled as she saw me, "you must be more careful dear or your going to end up in my hut and I don't have the time to be healing more injuries today."

The last sentence confused me. My eyes traced her small frail figure up and down. Her jaw was clenched, bags sat under her eyes and grey wisps of her hair were sprawled about in a flustered mess.

"Whats happened, is someone hurt?"  I go into full hunter mode, firing off questions until I got an answer.

Eventually Willow looked down and signed "Well I suppose I cant keep this from you or you will hear it from someone else but there was an attack on one of the other hunter teams today, few were wounded, none dead."

I had been holding in my breath the whole time and had only realized just now. Breathing out I looked Willow straight in the eye while whispering "The legion" she nodded which confirmed my suspicion.

I was gutted, it had only been a week since the last attack and it seemed to be becoming more and more frequent. We weren't prepared for the last attack and we certainly weren't prepared for this one.

I decided the best thing to deal with this information would be to sleep it off, so moving past Willow I thanked her for telling me and told her Logan had my hunt, I swear I heard a faint chuckle from her as I walked away.
