Part 38
[So, no one could guess correctly. Of course I know its quite impossible to guess this one correctly. So, no buddies, it was neither Pranbir nor Abhishek. So, who was it who caught Arhana in the act? ;) Find out yourselves. Hope you all like it.]
Aryan and Sahana whirled around as one only to see Mishti, Ranbir's younger sister , staring at them with wide, astonished eyes. Slowly, mischief filtered into her beautiful eyes and entirely replaced the amazement.
"Aryan! You are such a dark horse! I thought of surprising everyone by returning from London today for Bhai's wedding. And you surprised me instead. Hmm...this awesome news needs to be shared. BHAI! PRACHI!" Mishti turned on her heels and scarpered away.
"Oh no! Wait! Mishti, wait, please!" Aryan called out in an effort to stop her but to no avail.
"What are you waiting for? Let's go after her." Sahana nudged Aryan.
"Yeah. Yeah, you are right. Let's go." Aryan agreed.
Both dashed after Mishti to stop her from divulging the news.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Ranbir was carefully avoiding collision with someone or other as he made his way towards his beloved fiance through the throng of other batch mates.
He craned his neck to trace Prachi and grinned as he traced her, engrossed in conversation with a few other girls. He headed towards her but soon his steps faltered as did his grin and he came to an abrupt halt almost at the same time as his grin vanished.
Prachi was engrossed in a discussion regarding her favourite holiday destination with her friends when a guy approached her.
"Hi, Prachi." The guy called out, making Prachi turn around.
She encountered a very familiar as well as good looking man beaming at her.
"Daksh! Oh my God! How are you? When did you return to India? Why didn't you inform me? How could you not inform me? That's so mean of you. You know I...why are you laughing?" Prachi frowned as Daksh's laughter put an abrupt halt to her tirade.
"My God! Prachi, you haven't changed a bit. You are still miss I - can - lecture - continuously - when - I - am - angry." Daksh guffawed.
"You!" Prachi punched him on the arm.
Daksh only laughed harder and soon Prachi joined in.
Ranbir, on the other hand, was experiencing a burning sensation in his heart and he was swamped with an intense agitation as he witnessed the easy bond the duo shared.
He gnashed his teeth harder as he witnessed the infuriating scene of Prachi giving a side hug to that wretched guy unfolding in front of him. Just who was that person? And why was she so cordial with him? He just had to find out. Agitation increasing his determination, Ranbir headed towards the boy and the girl engrossed in laughter filled conversation. As soon as he reached them, Ranbir tapped on Prachi's shoulder with his free hand.
Prachi turned around and a beatific smile lit her face as soon as she saw him, a smile that reached her beautiful, dark eyes and lit them from within too.
"What took you so long?" Prachi smiled.
"I was stuck in the queue in front of the bar and then in the crowd. Won't you introduce us?" Ranbir stared at her unsmiling and then turned his attention to the good looking guy beside her and observed him with a frown.
A little bemused at the unusual grimness in the behaviour of the usually jovial and sprightly guy, Prachi stared at him curiously for a moment before turning her attention to Daksh.
"Oh right! I forgot. Ranbir, this is Daksh. Daksh is my childhood friend. And Daksh, this is Ranbir, my fiance." Prachi smiled.
"Wow! Prachi! You are such a dark horse! You got engaged and that too to such a hansome guy and yet you never invited me. Hi, Ranbir." Daksh extended his hand and Ranbir shook it.
"Hi, Daksh." Ranbir smiled but there was a certain grimness in that smile that baffled Prachi who realized that something was bothering her Baklu.
Prachi decided that she would ask him when they had some privacy and at that moment, needed to concentrate on the situation at hand.
"Okay, Daksh. Tonight we had our mehndi function. You have to come. No excuses, okay?" Prachi smiled cordially.
"But Prachi..." Daksh hesitated.
"No. I won't hear any excuse. You will have to come. Okay?" Prachi insisted.
"Okay." Daksh smiled slightly.
"Prachi, could you please come with me for a while? I have to talk to you about something." Ranbir frowned.
"Uh...sure. See you, Daksh." Prachi waved her hand in farewell.
"Sure. Bye." Daksh waved back and turning on his heels, quickly disappeared in the crowd.
As soon as he disappeared, Prachi turned on Ranbir.
"What was that?" Prachi glared at Ranbir.
"What did I do?" Ranbir sulked.
"This. This is the exact thing you did. Why were you sulking?" Prachi admonished.
"Why did you hug him?" Ranbir retaliated.
"I...wait a second...you are jealous!" Prachi giggled, making him frown harder.
"So what if I am? I can't see you hugging anyone, even as a friend. You should be thankful. My original plan was to break his bones. Yet I contented myself with throttling him in my head." Ranbir grumbled, sulking like a child, an endearing one at that.
"You are just so adorable, aren't you?" Prachi pulled his cheek, giggling.
His jaw dropped open at her abrupt action. Huffing impatiently, he turned on his heels and trotted off.
"Arey! Ranbir! Listen to me!" Prachi smacked her forehead with her palm and instantly dashed after him.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Ranbir was standing under the shadowy darkness of a colossal tree, a few feet away from the corridor which housed the hall where the farewell party was on full swing. Though it was daytime and the sun had still not relinquished it's dominion, the area beneath the tree was shrouded with a shadowy darkness.
Prachi came to an abrupt halt as her eyes finally rested upon the person they had restively been searching for. Sighing at the forlorn figure, she made her way towards him. Then a thought flitted across her mind, making her smile.
Prachi walked over to Ranbir and joining her palms, placed them over his one shoulder in a gesture of apology. However, he was not in a mood to accept her apology. He lifted his hand and gently pushed her joined hands away. Grinning, she repeated the action, this time placing her joined palms over his other shoulder. He, too, repeated his earlier move and yet again, gently pushed her hands away.
Prachi's smile transformed into a frown at his refusal to budge. However, soon a mischievous idea flitted across her mind, making her smirk.
"Okay. since you are so not interested in talking to me, let me call Daksh back. He always talks to me and never gets annoyed with me." Smirking, Prachi turned on her heels.
However, the mischief on her beautiful countenance transformed into astonishment as strong, masculine fingers wrapped around her dainty wrist and pulled her around. Before she could grasp what had happened, she was firmly and securely ensconced in his arms. His arms were around her waist and he was glaring down at her.
"You don't need to call anyone. You can talk all you want with me and I am not annoyed with you." Ranbir grumbled.
Prachi lips twitched but trying hard to keep a disobedient smile at bay, she schooled her features into a very innocent expression.
"Oh! But I thought people glare and grumble when they are angry or annoyed. Am I wrong, then?" Prachi batted her eyelashes innocently.
The annoyance in his eyes transformed into exasperation and an exasperated hiss left his mouth. Prachi's lips curved into an impish smile. As usual her smile was his undoing. As if it had never been there in the first place, his annoyance melted away.
"How do you do it?" Ranbir mumbled, touching his forehead with her.
"Do what?" Prachi stared into the pair of handsome, brown eyes in confusion.
"Make my annoyance vanish just like that." Ranbir smiled.
"Hmm. That may be because I know magic." Prachi grinned mischievously.
"Yes, you do. As you are my fairy princess and you have cast your spell on me. Hence I have become your slave for life." Ranbir grinned back.
Both of them laughed softly and straightening up, he dropped a kiss on her nose tip. Prachi smiled shyly as Ranbir kept staring at her lovingly. However, a commotion coming from nearby penetrated their preoccupation. Bemused, they stared at each other. Ranbir stepped back, freeing her from his embrace and silently extended a hand towards her. Prachi put her hand in his and together they went in search of the source of the commotion.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Aryan and Sahana had finally caught up with Mishti and each had grabbed one arm of her in order to stop her from going in search of Ranbir and Prachi and divulging the truth in front of them before Aryan and Sahana even had a chance to say anything to their respective best friends.
"Mishti! Mishti! Mishti! Please, don't tell Ranbir and Prachi anything. I ...." Aryan started pleading but before he could complete, a familiar voice interrupted him.
"Don't tell us what?"
The trio whirled around to find a very bemused Prachi and a suspicious Ranbir.
"Nothing. Nothing. Mishti was just joking." Sahana bestowed Prachi and Ranbir with a dazzling smile.
"What are you guys hiding from us? Mishti, come here and update us on what's going on." Ranbir quirked an eyebrow.
Sighing resignedly, Aryan let go of Mishti's arm and she wrenched her other arm free from Sahana's grip. Giggling, she dashed towards her brother.
"Bhai! Prachi! Do you guys know the latest news? Do you know what I saw when I walked into Aryan and Sahana accidentally?" Mishti rubbed her hands gleefully.
"What did you see?" Prachi looked at Mishti curiously.
"I saw.... Aryan and Sahana ensconced in each other's arms." Mishti divulged the truth, grinning impishly.
Aryan and Sahana shut their eyes while Prachi and Ranbir's jaws dropped at the news. The couple looked at each other with bewildered eyes and then at their respective best friends. Slowly, the shock wore off and the bewilderment began to be replaced by mischief. It was time for....PAYBACK. Prachi and Ranbir smirked smugly at each other and then turned towards Aryan and Sahana as one.
"Okay. Now I get it why someone was so lost in Sahana when she came down this morning. Lost in your dreamland, weren't you, Aryan?" Ranbir smirked.
"Sahana! I never knew you are such a dark horse. So, the tiffs were just smokescreen, weren't they?" Prachi wiggled her brows, making Sahana blush a deep shad of crimson.
"See, Mishti! This is why we were stopping you. I knew they will waste no time in taking revenge." Aryan complained.
"Revenge?" Mishti looked around, bemused.
"Yes. Revenge. Revenge for all the teasing we had to suffer in the hands of these two insufferable demons." Ranbir quirked an eyebrow.
"These two have teased us mercilessly. Now it's time for payback. This is just the beginning, my dear brother and best friend." Prachi giggled.
Ranbir and Mishti laughed while Aryan and Sahana grimaced as it was time to face the music. Sahana began to protest when a shrill ringtone startled all of them. It took them a moment to identify the tune to be the ringtone of Ranbir's mobile. Ranbir rummaged the pockets of his jacket and finally fished his cell phone out. Checking the caller ID, he turned to Prachi and mouthed 'Mom'. Then he accepted the call.
"Hi mom." Ranbir greeted his mother.
"Ranbir! Today is your mehndi ceremony. Where are you and Prachi? It's going to be evening soon. Don't you have to get ready for the ceremony. It's in the evening and not 2 days later. Come home soon." Pallavi demanded.
"Okay, okay, mom. Chill. We are coming. Bye mom." Ranbir rolled his eyes at his mother's hyper reaction.
"Bye. Come soon." Pallavi instructed and cut the call.
"Let's go guys. Mom said we should return home soon for the Mehndi function. And Aryan, like Prachi said, this is just the beginning." Ranbir winked and putting both of his arms around his wife/fiancee and his sister, sauntered away.
Cursing Mishti the blabbermouth under their breaths, Aryan and Sahana made their way towards the parking zone reserved for students.
