Part 23

[Sorry Sara, Gauri and Shree, it's not Ranbir. 😁😁
Everyone else thought it must be someone else and they are right.
This one is an action sequence, not a romantic one. 😉]

Prachi stiffened as her eyes met a pair of leering eyes. Instantly, she whirled around and was shocked to find that two other burly figures had sneaked up on her without her being the least bit aware of it. A chill ran down her spine as she realized the grave danger she had placed herself into by wandering away from the camp area in the dead of night.

Perspiration beaded on her forehead as she gauged the distance between herself and the camp area and her remaining courage began to dwindle as her mind registered the fact that she was quite far from the camping area for her scream to reach the sleeping people there.

"Hey beautiful, you appear to be very sad. Come with us. We can make you very happy. And you in turn can return the favour." One of the ruffians grinned while staring at her lasciviously.

"Get out of my way." Prachi's features tautened but she managed to hide the terror coursing through her.

"Awe! Come now. Don't be so rude. We are here to enjoy. Join us. Come on." Another hooligan smirked.

"I don't care why you are here. And the last thing I want is to join you. Leave my way." Prachi managed to speak in a calm voice, successfully hiding her fear and frantically searching for a way out.

The proverb 'If there is will, there is way' fortunately proved to be true for Prachi. Prachi noticed the bottle of alcohol clutched loosely in the hand of the man right in front of her. She instantly decided her next course of action.

"Ah! But that we can't do, sweetheart. Enough of your drama. Let's go." The third hoodlum was about to grab her wrist when Prachi moved in lightning speed.

She grabbed the bottle of wine and snatched it from the man in front of her with lightning speed, surprising him. Before he could recover from the bewilderment, she smashed the bottle down on his head, liquid and pieces of glass scattering in every direction.

The man screamed in agony while the other two gaped at the strange scenario unfolding in front of them, flabbergasted. Taking the opportunity of their stupefied state of mind, Prachi pushed the injured man on the other two, making all three of them tumble down and sprinted away as fast as she could.

The men gingerly got to their feet, pulling the injured one up. They shook their heads to get rid of the haze caused by collision of their heads with the solid iron bars of the railing.

"Get that girl. She should not escape. Bloody woman! My head hurts like hell! Argh!" The injured man, who was apparently the leader of the group, commanded.

The two men looked towards the ground and found that the girl was sprinting away towards the camp area with great speed and would enter the camp area within minutes. Once she entered that area, they wouldn't be able to do anything as many people would be there to help her. They had to catch her as soon as possible.

At such a crucial moment, Prachi committed a dangerous mistake. She looked back to check if the men were still following her and hence, failed to notice the log of wood lying in her way. Consequently, she tripped over the log and tumbled down.

Terrified, she looked back to see the hoodlums drawing closer with every passing moment. She tried to get up but the she had not only sustained deep cuts on her elbows and knees due to the fall but had also twisted her ankle, making it almost impossible for her to get to her feet, let alone run.

In helpless dread, she stared at the hoodlums drawing closer. They were no longer running but had settled into a relaxed pace as they had gauged that their victim was unable to escape them any longer. Their raucous laughter and a strong stench of alcohol filled the ambience, causing a wave of nausea rise within the terrified girl.

Prachi's vision was repeatedly turning hazy due to the tears now freely cascading down her cheeks. The only name that occured to her in that dismal state of mind and the only name that tore out of her throat in desperate plea for help was

"Ranbir"

The name echoed in the deathly silence of the night and Prachi closed her eyes, trying to shut out the horrific imagery that her mind created of the fate that awaited her.

The men were prowling towards her like predators closing in on their victim.

"Where are you going to go now?" Another bout of raucous laughter followed the slurred words.

The men came to a halt in front of her and one of then stretched out of his arms towards Prachi.

However, no insolent touch came. As a few dread filled seconds ticked past, Prachi opened her eyes slowly and peered through the narrow crack. Then her eyes opened wide on their own accord.

The outstretched hand that was about to  touch her was now suspended in mid air and trying hard to wriggle out of the grip of another fist. The rowdy man cried out in pure agony as the fingers around his wrist tautened their grip.

Flabbergasted, Prachi turned to find out the owner of the the limb that had grabbed the ruffian's wrist in a death grip. A huge wave of relief washed over her, leaving her weak.

"What happened, strong man? Does your strength only come to the fore front when you are confronting a weaker person? And runs for shelter whenever you realize you are the weaker one?" A male voice jeered.

Both the man in pain and his companion gaped at the handsome young man in front of them, robbed off their ability of speech momentarily at the sudden attack.

"Ranbir" Prachi whispered in a relieved, tear clogged voice.

Ranbir closed his eyes for a moment as he experienced a strong spasm of agony at the pain laced voice of the person he loved the most in this whole world. When he opened his eyes, scorching flames of a furious fire was blazing in their depth.

He tilted his head to the right and smirked mirthlessly before twisting the hand of the man he had been holding and simultaneously showering four back to back punches on the ruffian's face, causing blood to gush out of his mouth and nostrils. With another punch he sent him crashing down to the hard ground beneath.

The other man, who had been gaping at the unfolding scene in utter stupefaction, regained his senses as he witnessed the wretched condition of his friend. Gnashing his teeth audibly, he aimed a punch at Ranbir but Ranbir ducked with amazing desterity. As the man aimed another punch at him, Ranbir's fingers closed around the ruffian's fist. Slowly, Ranbir moved to a side the tightly held fist of the man, who had been trying to wriggle it out of his hold, and tilted his head to the left with a sinister smirk that spelt trouble with a capital T.

Ranbir bent his leg, brought it up and smashed his knee against the abdomen of the second ruffian, making him gasp and double up in agony. He pulled the man's hand he had been holding and placed it over his own arm and then pulled it down, causing the bone joint to break with a loud crack. The second ruffian scremed as excruciating agony shot up his arm.

Ranbir raised his hand and brought it down, palm facing, on the second ruffian's face with all the speed and strength he could muster, causing the man to drop down like a fallen tree on the ground. Both the men had been writhing in agony.

Ranbir dusted off his hands and smirked mirthlessly. Suddenly, his brows furrowed and then the ruthlessness in his eyes were replaced by a deep concern as he whirled around. Prachi was smiling through tears but he could feel the pain she had been going through as if it was his own. He instantly knelt down in front of her.

"Prachi! Prachi! Are you okay? Aahhh! What am I even asking? How can you be okay when you are clearly at pain? Where is it hurting? Please tell me." Ranbir pleaded as he looked at her with moist eyes.

"I am okay otherwise. Just this damned ankle. I don't know. It's either broken or twisted. Other than that I am okay. I would have reached the camp. I had managed to escape those hoodlums. But I made the mistake of turning back to see if they are catching up with me and hence, failed to see the log lying on my way. I tripped over it and like they say, the rest is history." Prachi tried to laugh but it soon turned into a grimace of pain.

"Don't worry. I will take you to the camp. There you will be treated. Everything will be fine, okay?" Ranbir tried to assure Prachi.

Prachi smiled at him and nodded but then groaned as another wave of pain hit her. Seeing Ranbir even more distressed than her at her condition, Prachi smiled reassuredly at him. Something caught her attention and she looked over his shoulder.

Her eyes widened as the horror replaced the smile in her eyes and a scream tore out of her throat.

"Ranbir! Look back!" Prachi cried out.

Oops! What happened? What did Prachi see? What will happen now?
