Part 1

She wiped her tears off and looked around. The darkness of the cell was reminding her of her life which was presently shrouded by the clouds of doubts, accusations and allegations. It was as if a dark cloud was looming over her life and at any moment, a bolt will descend over her, shattering her life into million pieces around her.

Fresh tears cascaded down her cheeks as she recalled all the allegations put on her, allegations for something she couldn't even think of committing. A sense of despondency took over her as she recalled the accusations, both in words and in the eyes of those she had considered to be like her family and who, she had thought, though mistakenly as it seemed, considered her as one of their own.

She roughly wiped the tears off, frustrated at her inability to prove her innocence and at the utter sense of helplessness that being locked in a prison cell had gifted her.

Sighing, she got to her feet gingerly and trudged off towards the window far above her on the wall of the prison, which was the sole source of light in the dark cell apart from the light in the corridor flanked by cells on both sides.

"Will I ever be able to see the daylight out there? Will I ever be able to face the world? If they prove me guilty everything will be finished, my career, my reputation, life as I know it. But most of all, my mother will be shattered. I can bear every other thing as long as she is spared the heartbreak." The girl mused.

She recalled how her employer's wife, Pallavi Kohli, was so vociferous in her allegations on her about the theft of the ten lakhs rupees that had been entrusted in her care. Her employer, Vikram Kohli and his mother, Daljeet Kohli, didn't say anything but they too believed the accusations. It was in their eyes. And Aliya Khanna, who was the sister of her other employer Abhishek Mehra, actually went ahead and got her arrested.

The only persons, apart from her family, who didn't believe in her culpability were Abhishek Mehra and Ranbir Kohli. She smiled softly even in the midst of all distress and dejection. Ranbir held on to her, literally, till the last moment and was just not ready to let go. She was so lucky to have a friend like him, one who stood by her through thick and thin and she was certain, would continue to do so if he got the chance.

And then there was Mr. Mehra. She had never seen her father but she wished that her father was like him. Mehra sir had always trusted her, stood by her and protected her. Without even being conscious of it, he had begun to fill the void in her life left by an absentee father. She wished he was her biological father. She had the world's best mother. And Mehra Sir was the world's best father.

Her chain of thoughts broke as a voice registered in her mind.

"Prachi" A tear clogged voice called out to her softly.

Instant recognition dawned on her dejected features. This was one voice that she could recognize amidst thousands of other voices. It was the voice that had soothed her anxiety and alleviated her fears since forever.

Prachi whirled around to see her mother outside the bars, holding onto them in a white knuckled grip. Tears were freely cascading down her cheeks.

Prachi could no longer control herself. Answering tears cascaded down her own cheeks. She tried to smile but her mouth wobbled and she whimpered in agony. Like a child in distress, she ran to her mother. Her mother, Pragya, let go of the iron bars and inserting her hands through the gaps between the bars, she cupped the tear stained face of her beloved daughter.

"Prachi, don't worry, okay? I will get you out of here. I will not let anything happen to you. You are my brave daughter, right? And brave girls don't cry like this." Pragya wiped off Prachi's tears.

"And mothers of brave daughters also don't cry. I am okay Ma. And I know you will get me out of this mess. But Ma, why didn't they believe me when I said I haven't stolen the money? Was their trust so fragile that it broke just like that?" Prachi wiped her mother's tears off.

"No need to think about those who didn't once think about what they are doing to you. Forget about them. At present we need to get you out of this mess and clear your name. And I will concentrate on that. Forget about anything else right now." Pragya eyes hardened and anger filtered into their watery depths.

"But..." Bemused, Prachi began

"No ifs and buts. We will talk about them later. I have talked with the lawyer. He had assured me that he will get you out." Pragya interrupted her teary eyed daughter.

She was firm in her resolve to get Prachi out of this mess and clear her name. After that she will deal with the Kohlis, especially Pallavi Kohli and this sister of Mr. Mehra, whoever she was.

"You don't worry, okay? Your mother is with you. And I won't let anything bad happen to you." Pragya reassured Prachi who nodded with a watery smile.

Patting her cheek sadly, Pragya turned on her heels and walked away while Prachi kept staring helplessly, her eyes brimming with tears.

Pragya walked over to the officer in charge.

"How can you arrest my daughter on the basis of what a thief said? Are his words even believable? Just because a rich person has filed a report, you will do anything to please them, won't you?" Pragya glowered at the officer.

"Excuse me, Madam. You are insulting an on duty officer. Neither did I do anything to please a rich person nor do I have any personal enmity with your daughter. I have done my duty. I have arrested her on the basis of witness." The officer glared back at her.

"Really? You mean you can arrest someone on the words of a thief? Where is the evidence that what that thief is saying is the truth? Where is the evidence that my daughter hired them for the theft? What if I say you have attacked me? Will someone arrest you too?" Pragya challenged the officer.

The officer was about to say something when a commotion outside the police station attracted their attention. As they turned towards the entrance, someone came stumbling through it and fell flat on his face right in front of them.

Another person followed the one lying at Pragya's feet. As she peered closely at the person lying at her feet and then looked up to see the person who had followed behind, she was shocked.

Who are these people? Does Pragya know them? Will Prachi be proved innocent? If you want the answers to all these questions then keep reading.
