Chapter 1: Class Trial - Spells, Curses and Hexes

Well, here it is. The class trial to uncover who amongst us killed poor Flora. I look around the courtroom, and see sixteen podiums set up in the middle of the room, and a throne in which I assume Monokuma will sit and watch the class trial since I doubt he's participating. The most disturbing part of the trial room is the picture of Flora stood behind one of the podiums with a cross over her face that I can only assume was made with her own blood. Poor girl, she didn't deserve this. That's why we have to get justice for her. We go to the podiums, standing behind the ones with our names on it. I'm stood in between Aaron and Saki. And just like that, the curtain rose on a trial for life, and a judgement of death... deception in life, and treachery in death... betrayal for life, and betrayal for death... the riddles of life, and the mystery of death... justification for life, and rationalisation of death... faith in life, and trust in death... the class trial to live... or the class trial to die...

COURT IS NOW IN SESSION!

"Lets start off with a simple explanation! You guys' votes determine the trial's outcome. Finger the true villain, and only the villain gets punished. But make the wrong accusation... and everyone else gets punished, leaving your deceiver to graduate, freeee and cleeeear!" Monokuma informs us as we look at him. So that's what this is about. Find the culprit to save us all from punishment. That seems fair, considering punishment most likely isn't anything other than death.
"Before we start I have a question." Travis asks, getting our attention. Monokuma goes silent so he can ask his question, and its one of the same ones that's in all of our heads. "Why is that here?" He points at the picture of Flora stood at her podium.
"It would be such a shame to be left out just 'cause you're dead." He said. If he was human like us, I assume a smirk would be on his monochrome face. I frown, looking back at the picture. We have to do this, for her.
"She did it." Asamo said suddenly, pointing at Cupa. Everyone turns to look at her, even me. She looks down silently not making a sound.
"Yeah. She's been acting the most suspicious." Travis agreed. Cupa again remained silent, just listening to and accepting their accusations. I feel awful for her.
"She did it, and she knows she did!" Saki accused. My eyes widen as I realise I can contradict her statement.
"You got that wrong!" I yell, getting the attention of everyone except Monokuma. Even Cupa looked up at me. "There's no way Cupa could've done it. She wasn't conscious at the time of the murder." I assert, using Cupa's testimony to back me up.
"Th-that's right... just before the murder... I blacked out, waking up next to the body..." She stuttered, looking back down again. I doubt she believes that anyone believes her. I believe her, though. I just have to prove her innocence.
"How do we know you're not lying?" Kyro asks, looking down at her. That was something I never considered.
"Yeah. She is the ultimate performer, this could all be an act for sympathy so we don't vote for her!" Angelo accused. A tear dribbles down Cupa's cheek as she looks down, looking hurt and betrayed. I want to believe she isn't guilty, but I don't know if I can anymore.
"Guys, calm down, please." Naseko begs everyone. It seems like nobody else hears him
"Naseko's right. We all need to stop throwing around accusations and start by looking at the evidence." Leon interrupts everyone, creating silence in the court room. He looked around at all of us before speaking again. "Cupa, what happened last night that you can remember?" Leon asks, getting straight to the point. He is such a good leader, and surprisingly calm given the situation.
"Well... I got a note slid under my door from Saki asking me to meet her in the girls bathroom at 12:45-"
"What?" Saki interrupts Cupa, laughing slightly. Cupa looks confused and slightly flustered. "That's impossible, since I got a note from YOU asking me the same thing!" She announces, pulling a note from her pocket. Its the exact same note Saki showed me earlier.
"But I got this note..." Cupa pulled out the same note she showed me earlier, and now I'm confused. Both have a note from the other asking to meet them at the exact same place at the exact same time. Something isn't right.
"Can I see both of those notes please?" Sarah asks anxiously. Both girls hand their notes to Sarah, returning to their podiums. Sarah inspects both the notes in silence, looking up at us after a few minutes. "Both notes are written by the same person." I'm in shock. Someone forged their note to frame the other for murder.
"Do you know who wrote the notes?" Ciara asked, looking at Sarah anxiously. The ultimate painter sighed and shook her head.
"I'm afraid not." She said. I sighed, kinda annoyed that we don't yet know who wrote both the notes, but do do know they are one and the same. That's something at least.
"Cupa, can you please continue your story?" Leon asks, looking back at the smaller girl. All our attention returns to her so she can continue.
"Y-yeah... I was about to leave to go to meet Saki, but I blacked out. Next thing I know, I'm stood over the body." Cupa explained. Leon nodded his head thoughtfully.
"Okay. Saki, what happened last night?" Leon asked, turning his attention to Saki.
"I got the note slid under my door by Cupa, asking to meet her. I thought the time was unusual, but I went with it. I didn't once think she would use that time to frame me for murder. I went to meet her in the bathroom, but she didn't show up. I waited over an hour for her." I heard it, a weak spot in her story. Luckily for me I can call her out on it.
"You got that wrong!" I interrupt, making everyone look at me. "Aaron, you know why don't you?" I ask, turning the attention to him. He thought for a moment, nodding his head.
"Yeah. I saw you coming back into the dorm area at around 1:15am, meaning you were there less than an hour." Aaron said, looking at Saki. That made her uncomfortable. "Saki walked straight past her room, but I didn't see where she went." Saki glared at him, wanting him to shut up. I assume it must've been a relief when he didn't add any more.
"Where did you go?" Alice asked. Saki didn't answer. I know I have an idea, but I need a piece of evidence to help me. All I need to do is think...
S-I-L-V-E-R-_-P-O-C-K-E-T-_-W-A-T-C-H
That's it! She must've gone to dispose of her broken pocket watch.
"Did you go to the incinerator?" I ask, looking over at her. She looks at me slightly angrily, shaking her head.
"No, of course not. Why would I go there?" She said angrily, glaring at me. I feel around in my pocket, holding on to the exact item I wanted.
"Really? Sure you weren't going to dispose of this?" I held up the pocket watch, hearing a good few gasps. Saki glares at me, reaching to snatch the watch away. Thankfully she doesn't succeed, as its a valuable piece of evidence that puts suspicion on her. "I found this during my investigation. As you can see, its cracked and there's blood in the crack. I can only assume it was dropped at the crime scene."
"What were you even doing at the crime scene, Saki?" Sachiko asked. Saki started stuttering, not knowing how to answer.
"I-I..." She looked around. She suddenly turns angry. "I was never at the crime scene and you can't prove I was!" She snapped. That's a lie, because I can prove she was there.
"You got that wrong!" I yelled, getting everyone's attention. "There was a smudged bloody footprint at the crime scene next to the body. Akame discovered it as soon as she entered the sauna, meaning only four people could've left it. Me, Angelo, Cupa... and you Saki. It was too small to be mine and Angelo's, but too big to be Cupa's. That means it only could've been left by you." She looked like she was getting angrier.
"CUPA DID IT!" She yelled angrily. "HER CLOTHES WERE BLOODY, AND SHE RAN BACK FROM THE CRIME SCENE!" Saki yelled. I saw the suspicious part of her statement, but someone else caught it before I did.
"How would you know unless you were there?" Alice asks suspiciously, looking at her. Saki turns white, realising she's been backed into a corner. She starts protesting, but I see Akame stood silently in thought.
"Wait, Akame looks like she has something she wants to say." I interrupt, putting all the attention on the knife skills expert. She was silent for a moment before speaking.
"Cupa didn't black out." She said suddenly. I glance back at Cupa, who looks really confused. "I saw her leaving the dorms and going into the main school building." Everyone looks at Cupa, who still looks confused.
"She probably lied about blacking out to make us all think she didn't off poor Flora just to escape." Saki accused. God, she and her accusations are starting to annoy me. All this accusation makes me think she knows what happened, all I need to do is think...
H-Y-P-N-O-T-I-S-E-D
That's it! That seems like the most likely explanation. I just need to say it and hope they believe me.
"I don't think she lied. I think she might've been hypnotised, and I know who could've done it!" I announce proudly. Saki looks even more like she's been backed into a corner.
"It was Saki, and here's what I think happened!"

Closing Argument:
It all started yesterday. Cupa received a note slid under her door by none other than our culprit. She didn't know why someone wanted to meet her, but she went at the right time anyway. That was the first part of the mastermind's plan. Cupa left her dorm and went to the girls bathroom exactly as planned. Once there, she met up with the culprit, who then used the silver pocket watch to hypnotise her. The culprit probably planned to erase Cupa's memory of the night, and destroy the note she had sent to her so she could make it seem like Cupa had asked her to meet her in the girls bathroom, then not show up so she wouldn't have an alibi. She didn't know Cupa didn't have the note on her. That's the reason she doesn't remember leaving her dorm and going to the bathroom. Once she was completely under their control, the culprit sent her off with a mission to kill Flora, the victim of this case. Why Flora was chosen I don't know. What the culprit didn't know was that the spell would break when Cupa had killed Flora. When Cupa saw what she had done, she was probably horrified. She dropped the murder weapon, the knife we found at the scene, and sprinted back to her room in tears. The culprit went to the scene to make sure the crime had been committed, accidentally leaving a footprint behind. the culprit dropped something, the silver pocket watch they had used to hypnotise Cupa.. They picked it up and saw that it had broken, rendering it useless. They hurriedly ran to the incinerator and threw it in, forgetting to set off the incinerator. They didn't realise Aaron had seen them going to the incinerator. The next day they joined us at breakfast like normal, acting they knew nothing about what happened. Their plan was to fake innocence, pinning the blame for all of this on Cupa. Isn't that right... Saki Boka, the Ultimate Hypnotist?!

"Puhuhuhu... Looks like you've reached your verdict! Then are we ready to cast our votes? You all have a screen on your podiums in front of you. Use it to make your selection! Oh, just to remind you all... make triple sure you vote for someone! You wouldn't want to be punished for something so minor, right?" Monokuma finally woke up, laughing a little.
"Hold up. One second. Who's the blackened?" Kyro asked, looking at Monokuma. I thought, slightly surprised by Monokuma's silence.
"Well, since Cupa was used as a tool by Saki, that would make her the blackened." I explain, hoping I'm right. Monokuma doesn't confirm or deny my assumption. Instead he continues with his speech about the votes.
"Who will be chosen as the blackened? Will you make the right choice, or the dreadfully wrong one? What's it gonna be? What's it gonna beeee!?" He shouted. I sigh and place my vote, seeing everyone else doing the same.
Vote: Saki
Verdict: GUILTY!

ALL RISE!

"You all got it right!" Monokuma announces. "Well, one person voted differently, but majority rules here!" He laughed. We were right, Saki was the blackened in this case.
"What the hell? Why did you do it?!" Angelo demanded angrily, glaring at Saki. She returned the glare, furious that she'd been caught out and had been voted guilty by us.
"Why?" She shouted, startling some of us. "Because I didn't want to be trapped here forever! I asked Monokuma who the blackened of a case like this would be, and when I found out, it seemed almost too good to be true. I could escape so easily by getting you to pin the blame on that midget!" Cupa looked upset, and I don't blame her. I'd be pretty upset if someone framed me for murder too. She took a few deep breaths, composing herself. "I wish not to answer any more questions. If you could please begin the punishment, Monokuma, that would be great." She gave us a sickly smile as she addressed Monokuma.
"Now then, I've prepared a very special punishment for you, Saki Boka, the Ultimate Hypnotist! Let's give it everything we've got! It's... PUNISHMENT TIIIME!" Monokuma shouted, pulling a gavel out of thin air and hitting a red button on top of a small monitor with it. The message displayed on the screen was: SAKI HAS BEEN FOUND GUILTY. TIME FOR THE PUNISHMENT! Also on screen was a small sprite designed to look like Saki being pulled away by a Monokuma sprite.

Punishment:
Saki was grabbed by a metal claw type thing, which attached itself around her neck and yanked her away from us. We could only watch as she was pulled to her doom. She was attached to a large round board with a black and white spiral design. Suddenly it started spinning. Faster... faster... too fast! It suddenly lifted, swinging from side to side as it kept spinning. The rest of us were forced to watch. Suddenly the rope that held the board up snapped, dropping it to the floor. All we could hear was the sickening cracks of her body as the board crushed every bone in her body. She was definitely dead now.

After that, we were all allowed to leave the trial room and continue like normal. I don't think I can go on like normal now. There is a tense silence as we mostly go our own ways. I look around, seeing Cupa looking really depressed. I gently tap her shoulder, getting her attention.
"Hey Cupa. I just wanted to tell you that I never doubted your innocence. That's why I fought so hard to prove it." I tell her, feeling awkward. She blushed and fiddled with her skirt, looking down. I did see a small glimmer of hope in her eyes though. That has to be a good sign.
"Thank you Carlo." She smiled weakly for a moment before walking away. I sighed and watched her go. All I can hope is that this never happens again.
