"We're here."
Colton hadn't even realised she had fallen asleep until she was jolted awake by Edward's voice and his hand lightly shaking her shoulder. She blinked, attempting to clearing her sleep ridden vision and try to salvage her dignity after not only all but shutting down after Edward's declaration of her abnormality but then also allowing herself to become comfortable enough in his presence to fall asleep. Thank god she didn't drool.
Groggily, Colton unbuckled her seatbelt, taking her surroundings from the interior of Edward Cullen's prized Volvo. If Billy could only see her now. They were neatly parked in one of the front parking spots at their shared Highschool, though the parking lot was more full then it should be for how early they had arrived.
It suddenly dawned on Colton and she spluttered a cough, "How long have I been asleep?"
Edward's expression was contemplative as he glanced down at his watch, "Oh I don't know, a little over an hour."
"What?" Colton all but shrieked, "You let me sleep in your car for an entire hour?!"
He shrugged, "You looked like you could use the rest."
"And what did you do, watch me sleep like some creep?"
The cackle of a laugh that loudly burst from his lips was comical in itself as he lapsed into a fit of chuckles that Colton's question really wasn't worthy of. "No. I decided to read something while you drooled on my patten leather seats."
Colton swatted away the outlandishly, pretentious titled book that he waved in her face and attempted to suppress the blush of embarrassment that threatened to bloom on her cheeks. "I do not drool."
"Are you sure about that?"
His answer was a silent glare.
Colton huffed before she finished exiting the vehicle, having to take moment to gain a proper foothold on the sleet coated ground. Cautiously, she began to move around the Volvo, each step deliberate and precise as she went, Edward mimicking her actions with an irritating amount of ease and grace.
"Are you alright over there?" He chortled after a few moments of watching her study the ground as she took slow, calculated steps in the direction of the school building.
"Yes actually, just don't like the idea of falling straight on my ass is all," Colton explained, eyes fixated on each space she was about to put her foot to access if it was safe enough.
"While that would be a sight," Colton almost broke her concentration to send him a glare. "I'd catch you before that could happen."
She went as stiff as the ice beneath her feet, taken completely off guard. "And why would you do that?" She questioned, attempting to brush off the sincerity in his voice and the fact that there was a gooey, mushy pit forming in the depths of her stomach that she was growing increasingly uncomfortable with.
"Your guess is as good as mine," He stated, his words mainly for himself.
"Well," Colton spoke loudly in hopes of cancelling out the tension, "I should probably go find Bella. See you in History."
"May the best man win." A crooked smile crept upon his lips, allowing her a glimpse of the arrogance she had become accustomed to before they both had a stroke which made him slightly less of an ass and for Colton to start question if irritation was really all she felt towards the infuriatingly, tantalising idiot in front of her.
For split second of weakness, as Colton turned to face the parking lot and begin her search for the girl who was quickly becoming far too vital to her sanity, Colton allowed her mind to slip back. She was crushed by her thoughts for a moment as she contemplated her relationship with Edward Cullen.
If she wanted to be all poetic and profound, to Colton, Edward was the moon. A force like gravity that both kept her tied to the ground and then also caused waves of turmoil and anguish to crash down on her within the same second. Perhaps Edward saw her as the sun, a constant, unstoppable, burning force. Something that had both the potential to cause a warm comfort and a fiery destruction within the same instant.
Maybe they were the sun and the moon, both constants, cursed to share the same sky, just never at the same time.
Colton slipped back into reality where she stood, staring vacantly at the now bustling parking lot. This was ludicrous. They had known each other for a matter of weeks and most of their time spent together involved them egging each other on. And there was the factor of their opposing families, with Colton's believing that Edward, his siblings and his parents were all blood sucking parasites, and from what Colton had observed, the Cullens not being her biggest fan either with the way they either glared at her or avoided her like she was caring some deadly disease. All of this, stuff, in her head, was due to exhaustion and her subconscious tricking her into having possibly romantic dreams about Edward because he was quite possibly the most attractive person she had ever seen in her life and her subconscious was hormonal.
That was it. There was nothing else.
Despite being all but completely distracted from the real world, Colton was still able to pick out Bella and her beaten and bruised Chevy. Relief filled her chest and her lips tugged up in a smile as she began to make her way over, waving as she did. "Bella!"
In hindsight, it shouldn't have taken her so long to realise that the loud sound of screeching was in fact tires loosing its traction against the slick tarmac. It shouldn't have taken her so long to realise that the out of control vehicle was now flying in a both her and her best friend's direction, the latter more directly. When the reality finally hit her, it was like being punched in the gut. Colton found herself whipping around, her friend's name ripping its way from her lips as she made a move to sprint in her direction and shield her from the van.
In a whirl of movement and confusion, stone cold arms wrapped around Colton's waist, prohibiting her from going any nearer to the scene.
"Bella!" Colton screamed, eyes wide as everything seemed to regain speed and chaos emerged. From where she was standing, she had heard the crunch of metal on metal and from her angel could only barely see that Noah Cullen had swooped in just in time to stop Bella from being completely crushed. The fact that her friend was most possibly safe didn't stop Colton from thrashing in the grip that she knew to be Edward's, kicking and pulling to get out of his hold. "Let me go, I have to get to her."
"She's alright Cole, calm down." He whispered gently into her ear but she ignored him.
"I don't care. Let me go asshole so that I can go see my friend." She ordered, turning her gaze upwards so that she was staring directly up at him. They were both panting from adrenaline and Colton didn't have time to worry about what being this close to him did to her.
"You do realise I just possible saved your life," He stated, his grip on her unwavering and his tone the coldest she had ever heard it. There was an edge to his voice, an unspoken rage in his topaz eyes that Colton both didn't care to, and frankly, couldn't understand.
"Good for fucking you. And now that you've lived out your hero complex," Colton spat, brown eyes shifting into two sharpened blades before she demanded in a tone that rivalled the ice that had caused Tyler's car to spin out of control, "Let me go."
And so he did. And she disappeared into the confusion that swirled around her friend, searching for Bella despite the fact that she could still feel his touch on her waist.
AM I A CLICHE? YES, I AM.
