Zap! Zap! Zap!
The water from the spray softly fell onto the green leaves of a potted plant. Hongjoong turned his head a little bit to inspect every inch of it. Good. Onto the next one.
A pretty batch of flowers just delivered. Lisianthus is what Hongjoong remembered they were called. Their creamy white color with deep purple tips at the end is what excites Hongjoong. He just put them in stock, so he couldn't wait for customers to come in and ask for the flower.
It was a sunny yet windy day. Sunlight flooded into Hongjoong's establishment, but shadows walked into the floor when a person outside walked by.
Sometimes he would get many customers. Mostly during holidays when couples arrived to get a last-minute gift, and he would laugh with them and wish the people a good evening. It warmed his heart to make people happy.
And sometimes, there would be no customers or very few at all. Hongjoong laughs at the thought when it was the first week, and very few clients came in, so he was worried the idea would fail. But his boyfriend reassured him it would be fine, and this was just the beginning. Days later, the business started gaining speed. Regulars entered because of Hongjoong's bright and heartwarming personality.
A few blocks down, on the busy highway, several motorcycles sped in between the cars. They would run along the shoulder roads or simply cut in between the otherwise calm vehicles, giving them a scare.
The one in front seemed to leave the others behind smugly.
The man was Park Seonghwa. He was quite skilled at driving and didn't hesitate to go a mile or so ahead of his group. So he grinned and continued on the way.
Upon reaching an exit, he pulled into a nearby church parking lot and waited for the guys to arrive. He checked the time when they pulled in.
"Why are you all so slow?"
"I'm not slow. You're just early," one of them, named San, muttered while taking off his helmet.
"I have to go. Where's my money?" Seonghwa held out his hand.
Another, Mingi, laughed. "Maybe we should stop calling races if we know Seonghwa's going to win."
The others agreed. But his friends gave him the money anyway.
"I'll see you guys on Monday."
"Hey! Good luck with today!" they yelled. Seonghwa nodded, got on his bike, and sped down the streets of downtown.
Hongjoong wrapped a small bouquet and handed it to an old woman.
"Thank you, Hongjoong. You're always so sweet and careful with my flowers," she tenderly said.
"It's always a pleasure selling to you, ma'am." Hongjoong watched her go and turned to check his phone. No calls or texts yet.
"Excuse me, how much for the cute boy standing behind the counter?"
Hongjoong turned with a squeal and ran to Seonghwa's arms. He kissed the man's cheek in happiness.
"You're late," he commented.
"I know. But the gang's really slow, and..." Seonghwa shrugged.
"You won?"
"Yeah. Good for a fancy dinner this weekend. How about that?"
"Mmm, maybe." Hongjoong smiled.
"Maybe? What other plans do you have?" Seonghwa tackled his face with kisses everywhere, prompting giggles from the younger.
"Okay! Okay! Look. I have something to show you."
Hongjoong took Seonghwa's hand and led him to a small area in the shop where pre-made bouquets sat on the shelves.
"Oh. Is that new?" Seonghwa asked, pointing at a few near the top.
"Yeah! They're pretty, right?" Hongjoong held out the pale yellow roses and white daisies mixed with a few other flowers of similar color shades.
"Not as pretty as you."
"S-Stop..."
"But they're beautiful. Did you work on the bow yourself?" Seonghwa didn't know a single thing about floral arrangements, but he knew the most important thing: it made Hongjoong happy.
"I worked on it that weekend when we went to the beach with your friends. You didn't notice?" Hongjoong accused.
"U-Uh... No?" Seonghwa slowly replied.
"Hmph."
Seonghwa pouted and wrapped his arms around the smaller. "I'm sorry, Hongjoongie."
"It's fine. I thought you'd know the story of my favorite bouquet, that's all." But Hongjoong knew his pettiness could — and would — cause a reaction.
Unless... Seonghwa thought ahead.
"Oh... I'm sorry," he whispered, letting his arms fall to his sides. Hongjoong didn't feel the warmth he had before. Not when Seonghwa backed away.
"Uhm—"
"I did plan a surprise for you. Maybe you wouldn't have even been mad at me so much. But, if you are annoyed, I'll see you home after closing. Should we heat yesterday's leftovers?" Seonghwa glumly stated.
"Wait!" Hongjoong urgently squeezed his forearm. "What surprise?"
"Aren't you mad? Because I forgot?"
"Well... yeah. A little. But I'm not full hating or anything. Sorry." Hongjoong pushed on his toes to kiss Seonghwa's cheek.
"Good to know." Seonghwa ruffled his hair. "So what else did you sell—"
"Uhm?!" Hongjoong exclaimed, hands on his hips. "My surprise?"
Seonghwa laughed and caressed his boyfriend's cheek using his thumb. "Yeah. Can you close early?"
"Uhh, I guess?"
"I promise it'll be worth it."
Hongjoong bit his lip and looked around the shop. It wasn't too busy... Tuesdays were usually very slow too... It wouldn't hurt to close a little early, right?
A smile grew across his lips. "Okay."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah! Let me go get my things, and we'll close."
Seonghwa helped around by closing the register and cleaning a few areas. As Hongjoong busied himself in the backroom, Seonghwa strolled around the preparation area, where Hongjoong wrapped the flowers in delicate tissue paper.
He tilted his head when he saw a notepad under a few sheets of paper. Quietly, he lifted them to see the pad.
Beautiful drawings of different bouquets and outfits were printed on the page. The clothes featured floral accessories hanging in chains or coated with a lovely golden shade.
"I'm ready! Oh..." Hongjoong looked at the older embarrassed and confused. "W-What are you doing?"
"These are beautiful, Hongjoong," Seonghwa whispered in marvel.
"You think so?" Hongjoong felt warm at the compliment. He pressed himself a little closer to the man he loved with his life.
"Are you interested in designing clothes?"
"Maybe? I don't know if I'll be good at it, though." Hongjoong sighed.
Seonghwa kissed his head. "So we'll give it a try. We need to gather money for supplies, but that's fine," he promised.
"Oh! Yes!" Hongjoong intertwined his hand with Seonghwa's. "We can go now."
Seonghwa helped Hongjoong onto his bike and handed him his black helmet with thin pink calligraphy swirls on it. He slipped his silver helmet on.
"Ready?" He turned to the younger. Hongjoong moved a little closer to him and squeezed his hands harder against Seonghwa's abs. Even if he's gotten on the bike many times in the last five years, it still made him nervous about letting go.
So Seonghwa rubbed the two small hands on him sweetly and began driving.
Hongjoong rested his head on the man's back when they reached the highway. In his head, he laughed. The cars racing beside them would probably see the big difference in their personalities just based on their outfits.
Seonghwa wore all black leather. From jacket to boots, they were of used but sturdy leather. Only a few things stood out — most notably, the chain hanging around his neck.
And Hongjoong? The body wore a snug oversized beige shirt with jeans. His shoes were a bright white, slightly dirty pair of sneakers because of how much Hongjoong used them. He never bothered to clean them.
And if they could see their hair, it would prove it further. Seonghwa's blonde locks contrasted Hongjoong's brown head of hair. Is it clear now?
Hongjoong was the soft force, and Seonghwa the rough complimentary to him.
But that's perfect and all they need.
Approaching the first red light they saw, Hongjoong remembered the first time he got on Seonghwa's motorcycle. He laughed.
"Hm?" Seonghwa turned to him. "What's up?"
"Remember when I squeezed too hard?"
"Oh." Seonghwa broke into a laugh. Hongjoong smiled softly while looking at the older through his visor.
"Hold on. We're taking a shortcut."
Hongjoong noticed the environment slowly shifting from a small town to suburban homes, and then a forested area. The lone, 1-car road was silent except for the churning of the bike.
"Where are we going?!" Hongjoong shouted. Seonghwa lifted a finger for him to wait. The younger rolled his eyes and looked at the unfamiliar yet welcoming area.
Somehow, the afternoon sunlight peeking through the trees relieved him. A cool breeze passed him as Seonghwa entered a more open place.
Hongjoong stared at the small house coming into view. It seemed to be surrounded by trees except for the driveway. The peeling white color made Hongjoong think the home wasn't so much taken care of.
Seonghwa came to a stop once parked. He removed his helmet and shook his head to fix his hair.
"Is this—"
"Not exactly. Come." Seonghwa squeezed Hongjoong's hands as they entered the home.
A rustic, wooden smell filled the couple's noses. Hongjoong slightly shivered at the cold, prompting Seonghwa to find the heater.
"—holes forgot to leave the heater on," Hongjoong heard Seonghwa mutter. He chuckled.
"While this warms up, are you ready for the surprise?"
Hongjoong laughed. "I honestly don't know where I am, Hwa."
"That's alright. Here." Seonghwa opened the shut slide doors to reveal a forested backyard. But Hongjoong quickly noticed the path between a few trees leading down a hill somewhere.
"Well? Are you coming?" Seonghwa asked with a smile.
"Yeah." Hongjoong joined him again. He followed behind the male, so his vision couldn't catch most of what was in front of them. Until...
The path opened to a large clearing, and Hongjoong gasped.
"No..."
"What do you mean 'no,' Hongjoongie?"
Hongjoong covered his open mouth with his hands while looking around.
Long patches of flowers stretched for miles at his feet. All he had to do was take a few steps down the hill, and he was among them.
"Seonghwa..." he whispered. Pink, purple, blue, white. All different colored flowers.
"Do you like it?" Seonghwa looked around the meadow.
"I love it!" Hongjoong tugged his hand and led him through the colorful plants.
Seonghwa watched his soft boyfriend marvel at the colors and types of flowers, touching each with extreme care. His heart melted over and over for Hongjoong. And he was okay with that.
"When you're done kissing every flower except me, I have something— Where did you go? Hongjoong?!" Seonghwa looked around him. He walked a few steps until clutching his chest, beginning to worry.
"Hong—"
"Boo!" Hongjoong jumped up behind him and wrapped his arms around the taller male. Hongjoong's laughter filled Seonghwa's ears and heart.
"I'm sorry, Seonghwa. But if it makes you feel better, you're my favorite 'hwa' here," Hongjoong tenderly said. He leaned in to kiss the man.
"I hope I am. We can come here later, but something is waiting for us close by."
"Something else?" Hongjoong swung their held hands while walking a little closer to the house. But they took a small right into a few trees, where small lights came into view.
Hongjoong gasped. "You..."
"Hm?" Seonghwa smiled.
A tall tree hung bright yellow fairy lights from its branches. On the grass lay a thick red blanket with a picnic basket settled above.
"This is so cute."
"Did I choose a good view?"
"Yeah." Hongjoong looked at the now evening sun with the sky fading violet behind it. Below the sun was the meadow of flowers.
"Hungry?"
Hongjoong nodded. "I love this so much. When did you plan this? How did you even have enough time to?"
Seonghwa shrugged. "The guys helped me. Remember I told you I was racing this morning?"
"Yeah."
"I forgot to mention we were coming here." Seonghwa smiled and patted the other's head.
"'Forgot.' Sure."
The two are while surrounded by a calm atmosphere. A rush of cool air made the leaves sway, and flowers brush synchronously. Hongjoong unconsciously curled up into a small ball while eating.
Seonghwa noticed and set his food down. "There's one more thing."
Hongjoong softly giggled. "Another? What did I do to deserve all of these surprises?"
"Well, not to sound cheesy..." Seonghwa moved from his seated position over to hold Hongjoong's hand. "But you deserve this for being my boyfriend."
Hongjoong laughed his incoming tears and burning nostrils away. "Seonghwa..."
"And you deserve a lot more once you're my husband."
Still holding the younger's hand, he used the other to reveal a small velvet box with a beautiful ring on the cushioned center.
"So Hongjoong, will you marry me?"
"Of course," Hongjoong cried. "Of course I will." He threw his arms around his beloved, never wanting to let go.
Seonghwa embraced him back with the same force, happiness in every single inch of blood inside him. It all felt surreal at the moment.
"I love you, Seonghwa," Hongjoong whispered. "Thank you so much."
"I love you too, Hongjoong."
"Can we talk a walk through the meadow before we go?"
"We have the evening to do so." Seonghwa pressed his lips against Hongjoong's temple.
