Chapter 3- Government Property

Subject 894 walked obediently down the corridor with Ermolai. What is happening to me? He wondered. Am I dreaming?

Ermolai led him to a large metal door built into the side of the right wall. As Ermolai opened it, 894 managed to find the courage to ask him what was going on.

"Why am I here?" He asks.

"For an important assignment." Ermolai replied.

"I know." Subject 894 said. "But what exactly is my assignment?"

Ermolai froze and said nothing, not knowing what to say.

"The general said I was going to "become something else." What did he mean?" The boy questioned.

When Ermolai still didn't answer him, he persued farther."He also said that you would explain what I'm here for."

Ermolai cursed under his breath and started to turn around. 894's persistence was becoming unbearable. "You are going to become an agent for the the state government." Ermolai said.

An agent? Why would anyone want a boy to be an intelligence gatherer? It made no sense to 894.

"Why?" He asked.

"Because we told you that you are." Ermolai replied.

Subject 894 suddenly had nothing more to say. Ermolai's words came from his mouth laced with venemous anger.

Ermolai put his hand on his shoulder and urged him through the door he had just opened. Inside was another corridor, but this one stood out from the others. The passageway was much narrower and the only other doors in the hallway were the five to his left. They were made of reinforced steel and had clipbards with paper clipped to them. Each of the clipboards had the name of an animal in bold print at the top of the front page. 894 Examined them as he walked by. The first was Wolf, the second Otter, then Falcon, Tiger, and finally, as they came to the last door, Fox.

It was there Ermolai stopped and took a small key from the pocket of his shirt. He inserts it into the large lock on the door and turns it, revealing a luxerious room furnished with a large bed that had a manila file on top of it, a desk that sat adjacent to the bed, a large, thin necked lamp with stood six feet tall, and a bedside table.

"What-" Subject 894 started to ask when Ermolai raised his hand. "All will be answered." He said, gesturing to the manila file. He then gave 894 a slight nudge into the room. He complied and stepped iniside. After he was completely inside, Ermolai violently slammed the huge door behind him, causing a loud metallic crash to resonate through the room.

Subject 894's stomach dropped. The fact that escape was not an option was finally setting in and he let out a distressed sigh of defeat. He collapsed to the ground and started to cry. Why had neither Ermolai or Kosovitch given him a straight answer?

He started to peice what he knew together. He was, in fact, alive, which was something he wasn't in the only other memory he knew. His wounds had been fixed, and he had no handicaps. He was below Moscow and was going to be trained as an agent.

He came to the epiphany that none of it made any sense.

He looked up toward the bed. The file was his only hope of putting the peices of the mystery together.Weakly he stands up and moves over to the bed. Sitting down, he looks at the file The front had a red star stamped in the center of it. Below, the word "Fox" was printed in all capital letters. He sighs and opens it and begins to read.

Greetings, Chosen Subject.

You have been selected by the state government of Russia to partake in an initiative that is classified high above any other activity currently active in the military or intelligence fields. You may think you are being held against your will, but on the contrary, you are starting an endeavor that will end in glory for everyone involved.

No doubt, you are frightened and unaware of how and why you are here. These questions will be answered in this address.

To whoever may be reading this, the state knows that you have been involved in an event which has resulted, to the world, in your death. However, your nervous system was still active, no matter how small the functions it was controlling were. This lead the state to become extremely interested in you. Having a body that could still have internal features working after a catastrophic event, especially at the age you are, is a medical anomoly and very rare.

The state also knows your age, a factor that was extremely important in the task you were chosen for. After retriving your body ( the means of which are classified.) Russia's top surgeon, Vladimir Ermolai, performed surgery to reawaken the complete funtions of your nervous system and repair any other injuries you have received.

As you have no doubt realized, you cannot remember anything other than the situation in which you were assumed dead. The simple answer is that they have been removed from your brain. This is part of the protocol of this assignment and it is crucial that you know that you will never remember any events of your previous life before that. As far as you are concerned, that is the day you were born.

You may also be wondering how you suddenly knew the full specifications of my weapon. The memories of your past life have been replaced with knowledge of weapons, tactics, and the ways of espionage. When presented with a similar command, you will be able to give the proper facts on a variety of subjects.

894 paused. The information coming into his head was too much. He wished he could go back to living in ignorance like he had only minutes before. Now that he knew the truth, he hated it. He was tempted to close the file and never read it again, but told himself he must finish it and started rom where he had left off.

You have been selected by the state to become an agent of the Foreign Intelligence Service as a member of a special team of child operatives. You will be trained here until I and your superiors see it fit to send you into the field. Your task when active will be to eliminate those who stand in the way of the state's mission and ideals. Given your age, you will be able to perform most of the task under the complete oblivion of those around you.

He stopped again. As he sat with his face in his hands he let the words what he had just read sink into his mind. He was to be an assassin for the state, a stone cold killer who pulled the trigger on anyone the state told him to. He didn't think he could do that, he wasn't capable of it.He looked at the last few lines of text the address held, and it was at that moment he knew that he knew he had crossed the point of no return.

Please know that this is not a rejectable assignment. Any resistance or refusal to comply will result in your death.

Then, 894 knew he was in whatever awaited him for the long haul.
