CHAPTER XVI. - SEARCHING FOR ULFERONN

I quickly jumped out of my bed. Reilly heard me moving around so she sits up on her bed, squiting her tired eyes and brushing through her hair she asked me what was I doing. As I was dressing up, I explained to her I need to go check up on something in the library. She groaned and called me crazy for wanting to study while they gave us time off. I picked just some casual clothes. I got dressed in light blue jeans and a white blouse, then I put my Ossilor cloak on top. I closed the closet room as I left it and tried to make no noise while walking around the room so that I don't wake up Reilly again. Taking my backpack from the chair I swiftly toss it on my right shoulder and leave my room, letting Reilly sleep.

I was on my way to the Umbras library when other students who were walking to their classes started staring at me and whispering something. I rolled my eyes. What is it this time? Making the student's week after the limit? Is Umbras side same as Aveus at the end when it comes to rumors? But I wasn't going to pay any attention to it. My main goal right now was to get that one book I used for my Scriptology class project. I hope they will have at least one copy of the book at Umbras side. I finally realized where I've heard that word Woreus before. Or more precisely the name. I don't know if it means something or if my brain is just cooking up dreams about homework, mixing it up with my old dreams, but I still need to check this out. I got to the library and one of the librarians walks up to me but I told her I don't need anyhelp and I know which book I am looking for. She gave me a slight nod, then he sight fell on the student who entered the library after me and she went to help him. I slowly made my way into the section with books in ancient languages. This section of the library was quiet and less crowded, only maybe up to five students who were currently walking around or sitting at the tables and studying. As soon as I walked in and was browsing the books, the whispers started again. It was annoying but I can't do much about it just let them have their fun with the rumors. Then I heard someone clear their throat behind me. I turned around to see who it is. I was greeted by a familiar face of the twin librarian. She was wearing the same outfit as her sister at the Aveus side and her butterfly glasses that were in the same shape but were painted in a gold color. I noded my head at her saying I know which book I was looking for but she only smiled and then pointed on my body. With confusion I asked her what was she meaning to say only for her to tell me that I am wearing an Ossilor cloak. I chuckled and then mentally facepalmed myself. I must have put it on as a reflex, thinking I am still at Aveus. Wait. Does this mean they don't wear cloaks or anything for classes? Professor Hale didn't mention anything or didn't take me to any cloak room so I let it slip my mind. I will have to ask him later on if I am supposed to return this or what. I put my right index finger on the margins of the books and read their names, trying to find the Ulferonn book but I couldn't find it. I quickly turned to my left, to try catch the librarian to ask her about the book. Luckily she was still near the section I was in so she returned and asked how could she be of assistance to me. Telling her I couldn't find the book I want on the shelf and I asked her if she could tell me where it is. I thought she will walk to her desk to check it out because there is no way she kept track of all books in her head. To my surprise, she gave me a soft smile and knew exactly where the book is.

Librarian: The Ulferonn book has been signed out to Aveus academy.

Me: Can I know who has the book? I kinda need it urgently.

Librarian: We don't usually provide information about people who sign out a book since the books are returned in a few days and students get access to the book when they aquire it. But the book you are searching for has been rented out for an unlimited time. If you want, I can contact the person and ask them if they are willing to lend you the book.

I thanked her for letting me know and then asked her to contact the person that has the book. We walked to the main desk and she let the other librarian, who was responsible for the signing of the books, know about my situation and then left. The other lady picked up her line phone. Using her finger, she dialed the plastic circle and turned it multiple times, then waited for the person on the other side of the line to pick up. Soon after, someone answered the phone and the librarian explained the situation to them. Then she pulled the phone lower, covered it with her palm and asked me for my name because the person inquired to know who is requiring the Ulferonn book, so I told her my name. She listened to the person and only answered uhuh to everything they said. Then she returned the telephone receiver to its' body and ended the call.

Librarian: The book is currently signed to Professor Coldos at Aveus academy. Upon hearing your name, he asked if you could visit him in his office after his Casting class is over.

I thanked the librarian for helping me out. I left the library and walked outside, trying to get to Aveus side. Then I realized I don't know how to pass. Like is there any rule or a place I cross? Do I just go to that hallway door I came through with Mr. Hale and wait for a professor who is crossing to let me through or I just walk outside the building and cross the barrier there? I could go to the cafeteria again and then just get throught there but can I really just roam around the Aveus side as a demigod student? There were some of the fellow demigod students walking around from their classes so I decided to ask them.

Male student: You just walk this way to the barrier door and there will be a guard waiting. He will let you know what to do.

Me: Thanks a lot.

Male student: No problem. But by the way how did you even cross the barrier if you are from Aveus?

Me: Ah this? Uhm I got assigned to the wrong school apparently. Still forgot to return the cloak.

Male student: That's weird. Never heard of that happening. Anyway, just go straight through this hallway, then turn left and you should get there.

The group of students I stopped then left after giving me advice on crossing the barrier and I immediately took of the Ossilor cloak. Better to not bring any more attention to me. I followed their instructions and arrived at this big wooden door, same as those we used with Mr. Hale. With the only difference that there was a person sitting on a high chair right in front of them. I walk in front of the older male and then him asked to let me pass through. He was sitting higher than me so I had to look up. His head was facing straight, looking at the wall in front of him. It took a few seconds but then he lowered his head to look at me

Guard: Your. Name. Please. And. Descendancy.

Me: Kaitlin Holland. Uhm, Zeus descendant.

Guard: Your. Visit. Permit. Please.

Me: I am sorry, I don't have one. Didn't know I needed one.

Guard: Can't. Pass. With. No. Invitation.

Me: I was asked to come to Professor Coldos' office. I am only retrieving one book. Do I have to get a pass for that?

Guard: Wait.

The guard looked up again and he moved his hands very slowly on top of his desk like he is typing on a computer keyboard even though there was nothing on the table. I was getting anxious so I just looked around, tapping my right foot on the ground while holding the cloak folded over my arms in front of my chest. After a while, the sound of long nails tapping against the wood stopped and the guard looked down on me again.

Guard: Pass. Granted. Professor. Coldos. Awaits. Stay. Allowed. Two. Hours.

He says slowly, making a pause after each word, reminding me about the time limit and then lifts his arm in the air, also in a slow motion. He waves at the door and then it opens. I bow slightly and thank for letting me pass, then I walked through the big wooden door. The air around me turned slightly into shade of turquoise blue and my skin started buzzing for a bit, meaning I was already passing through the barrier. Then the sensation disappeared as I passed through another big door that was opened in the distance. Both door then started to close and I noticed another similar guard sitting on this side. He kept looking straight like the one on the Umbras side and didn't say anything. I walked pass him and got out of the corridor to the main hallway at the Aveus side. Some students were passing me by as they were going to their classes or back to their dormitories. It made me feel a little bit nostalgic even though it wasn't that long time ago I was a student here. First things first though, I need to return the Ossilor cloak. I still remembered where the cloak room is so I made my way there. The room was still the same. Empty, and decorated with wine red curtains and burgundy walls. Last time I was here, I was picking up this cloak with Young and was returning my 1st year one. There was a place to put the 1st year cloak but do I return this one in there too? I tried to speak up and see if anyone was there but with no luck. I didn't want to just leave it randomly so I left the room. Unsuccessful in returning the cloak I took it with me. As I was leaving the cloak room and closing the door behind me, I heard a familiar voice call my name. I turned around to be met with Mr. Hale's face. He looked like he is on his way to his office, holding a book in his right arm close to his torso, dressed in his usual formal clothing again. White shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, black pants and half of his long dark hair in a ponytail. His emerald eyes stared down on me and I was hypnotized by them for a little bit, looking at his mouth move and asking me something. I had no idea what said until he asked me again.

Mr. Hale: Are you visiting me? Do you have any questions about the transfer? I wasn't informed about your visit.

Me: No, Mr. Hale. I came to visit Professor Coldos.

Mr. Hale: Oh yes. You won him as your mentor for the student's week. Congratulations, by the way. The week should start on Monday though.

Me: I am not here for the mentoring yet. Only trying to retrieve something I need. And I realized I haven't returned the Ossilor cloak since I won't need it at Umbras.

Mr. Hale: That's right. I should have taken it when you transferred but it slipped my mind. I am sorry for the inconvenience.

Me: It's okay. I figured you all must be confused since this mishap never happened. I didn't even think about the cloak at all. I just took it as I usually did for my classes and some people pointed it out.

Talking to Mr. Hale made me always feel peaceful and calm. Except the time when everyone stared at us. Mainly at me because he was so young and handsome, every girl wanted to be his girlfriend or whatever but he never paid to anyone really. Or at least that's what I heard from the girls back at the Ossilor dorm. But he seemed to be having no problem hanging out with me. Since I got this opportunity and I didn't want to bother any students at Aveus, mostly because they still seem to hate me because of my powers, I asked Mr. Hale if he could tell me where Professor Coldos' office is. He looked at his watch and then told me that his class should be done in a few minutes so I could just go wait in front of his classroom to meet him. Unfortunately, Mr. Hale was busy and on his way somewhere so he apologized for not being able to come with me, but he gave me directions for the classroom. I thanked him and started to walk away but he called my name again. I stopped on a spot and turned around to look at him. I was wondering what more he wanted from me.

Mr. Hale: I can take care of that for you.

I didn't understand what he meant so I tilted my head a little bit and raised my eyebrows in confusion. But then Mr. Hale pointed on my body. I looked down and realized he meant the cloak. I didn't want to bother him with it but it seemed I have no way of returning it so I gladly took his offer. I walked up a few steps to him and then handed him the cloak. He took it and tossed it over his forearm while continuing to hold the book he had with him. Then he left while I remained standing there, watching him walk away. I didn't have much time until the Casting class is over so I quickly returned to the correct direction and searched for the classroom.

I walked through the hallways and looked around. Even though I was transferred to Umbras academy, I haven't had any classes so I don't know what to expect and it made me miss the magician lessons. All of those classes seemed interesting with all the different types of lessons and things to study. Demigods don't have those powers to summon things or make potions apparently so I guess I won't have any of those classes anymore. It seemed like a waste. Despite me not being able to use my powers in the Controlling class, others I really enjoyed. Maybe with Professor Coldos I will be able to attend and join some of his classes during The student's week.

I passed multiple rooms and people on my way until I finally arrived to the Casting classroom. As soon as I got there, the door opened and the students walked out. I moved to the side and let them exit the room without bumping into anyone. They all just passed me without saying anything or even looking at me. My head and my eyes were moving left to right, back and forth while I looked at everyone that was leaving the classroom. They all had their house cloaks on so they must be upperclassmen. I was still scanning the people while no one even noticed me standing there. It felt nice. Finally I was not being noticed for the stuff happening around me after I got admitted to the academy. Everyone just talked to themselves either about the class, their homework or something concerning other classes I haven't heard of yet. Or they were just simply discussing what to do during the upcoming weekend. It felt like a sight from a normal school day and not a magical academy so I chuckled to myself but then I was interrupted by someone tapping on my shoulder. I turned around to see who it is and I saw one of the students. He asked me if I needed any help and what was I doing there so I explained that I was looking for Professor Coldos. The student let me know that the Professor had something to finish up in the classroom so I should go in and ask if he is free. I thanked him and then took a little peek into the classroom to look for Professor Coldos. I was going to enter but then that student stopped me again and told me to not forget my cloak next time. I looked down at my clothes and then back at him. I scratched the back of my head and explained I was from the Umbras academy. He only gave me a slight oh and apologized. Then he just left with no further questions or weird looks. I gave him a soft smile, closed my eyes and waved as he was walking away. Then I quickly pulled my mind back together and pushed the door to the classroom slightly again. I knocked on the door and then peeked with just my head through the gap. Professor Coldos was rummaging through some papers and books, organizing them and carrying them from one spot to another. He didn't notice the knock so I cleared my throat, trying to grab his attention but there was no reaction to it. I called his name but he continued with his cleaning. He seemed like was searching for something so I decided not to disturb him and just wait until he is done. I wanted to find my phone to see how much time of the stay I have left. As I was rummaging through my backpack I heard Professor Coldos say something. I froze all of my movement and looked up at him. He was holding some papers in his hands and was reading them. I got surprised and thought I imagined it in my head that I heard him speak but then he lifted his head to look at me while still holding the papers and he asked me to sit down and wait. I responded only with okay and then walked to the front desks. I sat down and put my bag next to the legs of the desk. There was a silence at first and you could only hear the noise of rustling paper and a person walking but then Professor Coldos started a conversation while he continued his search.

Professor Coldos: I am sorry but I have to finish this.

Me: No worries. Take your time.

Professor Coldos: So I heard you wanted to borrow the Ulferonn book.

Me: Yes. The librarian lady told me it was already lended out to someone. But if you need it then I could maybe borrow the one from Aveus library.

Professor Coldos: That wouldn't be possible. The libraries are mirrored images. They are like copies of each other existing on the same plane. Uhm, simply put, there is only one book. If you borrow it on Aveus side, the one on the Umbras side would be gone too, basically. People usually don't take out books in Noion language so I asked for extended period to hold onto the book. Do you need it for homework again?

Me: Uh, no. I already transferred to the Umbras academy.

Professor Coldos: Yes I know. Ah yes, you probably haven't had a proper studying time. There is a Scriptology course at Umbras academy too. It is more as a hobby since demigods don't require knowing languages for casting or anything, but you are able to sign and continue the class even while being at Umbras. If you want, I can ask Professor Minertha to add you back to her student's list and she will ask for a permit to cross universities for the classes.

Me: I don't know if I have any knack for languages, never really liked studying them.

Professor Coldos: That's a shame. Well if you change your mind, let me know during your student's week and I will arrange it for you. It would be a huge loss. And I think you do have a talent for languages.

Professor Coldos was talking in his casual voice, still seemed distant as ever but it was easier to talk to him for some reason. I heard he is very passionate about this Noion language and it's basically his life work so maybe that's why it felt like he is really happy to discuss it finally with someone.

Professor Coldos: Ms. Holland. Do you know why I picked you for the student's week?

Me: No, not really. Weren't we assigned randomly?

Professor Coldos: Each professor, that is selected by the Principals to participate in The student's week, is spectating the hunt and chose a student based on their qualities shown, usually in their area or expertise. If there is nothing in common, the student's are assigned to the remaining professors.

Me: So because Nima knew that thing about the eagles she was chosen by Professor Hellion who is teaching Zoomantropy for example. But you said you chose me too? I wasn't even meant to pass the hunt.

Professor Coldos: You were made an exeption by the Principals because you showed courage and you tried to help your classmates despite the hunt being a solo competition. And I wanted you because of your previous interaction during Scriptology class.

Me: Ah, so it was because I can read this Noion language?

The Professor only nodded and then continued to move around books and reading papers. After hearing this, it made sense. He seemed intrigued that I did that essay back then and didn't have problem translating the Ulferonn book. If I can use the book during the student's week and work with Professor Coldos, maybe he can explain some things and tell me about more about this Ulferonn. Then the Professor slightly hit the table with the papers he was holding to adjust them and the put them on the stack of papers that were on his table. He walked in front of his desk and leaned against it. He crossed his arms in front of his chest, making his blue shirt crinkle a little bit.

Professor Coldos: I apologize for making you wait. Now I wanted to ask you, if you are willing to start The student's week earlier. It was never done before but there are not any rules saying we can't do it. During the week, you will be granted a pass to cross academies but you will mostly attend my classes and we will have only limited time to do any research. I would like to work with you on Noion. If you want, we can work on the Ulferonn book since you are interested in it. What do you say?

I thought about it and I decided that it's worth it. I could read the book but I don't really know anything about history of magical world so if Professor Coldos offered to work on this during his free time, it seems worth it. I didn't make any plans for the weekend anyway and I was going to just read the book. I agreed with starting The student's week earlier and then the professor asked me to accompany him to his office to grab the book. I picked up my bag and followed Professor Coldos out of the classroom. As we were walking through the school, we met Professor Nannieya on our way. She was probably on her way from the greenhouse. As soon as she saw me, he face lit up and she smiled. Professor Coldos greeted her and continued walking to his office but Professor Nannieya stopped us. She initiated conversation and said that she was really sad, not being able to be my mentor. She looked at Professor Coldos with an angry face, saying that he stole me from her. Professor Coldos was just standing there, explaining the process of choosing students in his monotone voice as usual and I just chuckled because I suddenly felt uncomfortable. Professor Nannieya must have noticed it and she started to laugh and slightly smack Professor Coldos on his shoulder, saying it was just a joke and she was just teasing. She was really happy back then that I was able to summor both lilies for the Khauta Silvera spell and I guess she wanted to work with me on it again since I we didn't have time to try summon it again at the Botany club and now I even left Aveus and won't be able to attend her classes anymore.

Professor Nannieya wished me luck with my studies and then she excused herself to go work on her plants. Me with Professor Coldos, we continued on our way to his office while walking in silence without any conversation. We arrived to his office after a while. It was neat besides a few stacks of books and papers lying around. It looked like a small library on its own. I was waiting in the doorway while the Professor was making space on his desk. He picked up few books up and then put them down on the table until he found a book that looked familiar. He patted it a little bit and then walked up to me. He handed me the book so I took it from him. It was the Ulferonn book I was looking for. I thanked him and then put the book away into my backpack to take it back with me to my dorm. I was ready to leave but then Professor Coldos started a conversation and asked me to sit down and discuss our work during the student's week and he asked me what's my interest with the book. He seems like a nice person despite his cold personality but I am not sure if I should let him know anything about my dream and why I want the book really.

Professor Coldos: Why are you so interested in this book?

Me: At first I only picked it out randomly for my essay but after that incident with it, it seemed interesting and I wanted to read more about it.

Professor Coldos: It is interesting how you are able to read in this language without knowing it or using my dictionary. Are you sure you haven't learned it as a kid?

Me: I grew up knowing nothing about magic at all and the only second language I studied was Spanish at highschool which I hated doing.

Professor Coldos: Might be a part of your powers. Even if you are not from a god line that would explain having it, with the evolution of the magical genes, it's possible.

Me: I did a lot of unexpected stuff that people were interested about so I don't know at this point?

Professor Coldos: Like what for example?

Me: There was this one spell I did during Botany class. That's why Professor Nannieya was interested in me and wanted to be my mentor during student's week.

After remembering the spell and what Reilly told me when I made the joke about summoning a perfect guy, it got me thinking. How was I able to do it if we demigods are not supposed to be able to do spells? I was also to do multiple easy spells. It created a new question I now kept on my mind and I don't know what to do with it. Maybe ask Professor Nannieya about it, or Mr. Hale? I shook my head and then focused on the conversation with Professor Coldos again. I don't know if he noticed me being distracted but he ended the conversation after telling me the plan for his mentorship. He let me take the book with me and read it in my free time, then meet up with him tomorrow after his classes and ask him if I have any question and then we will decide what to do later. He walked to his desk and bent down, opening his drawers. He took out a piece of paper and then went up to me, handing it over. It was his class schedule so that I knew when to come. He also said that he will inquire for visitation permit and it will be delivered to me later. I took the time table with me, thanked the Professor and then left to go back to my room. I had some new questions about the KhautaSilvera spell but my main focus was trying to find something about this Woreus person in the book.

I walked through the academy without any hiccups on the way and easily crossed the barrier to go back to Umbras. Everyone was walking around from their classes to dormitory or the other way around while I was excused from classes. It felt nice to have a free time so I quickly ran up the stairs to my floor and get into my room. I walked in and was greeted by puffing Reilly who was doing some sit ups work out on the ground. I walked up to my desk and took out the book out of my backpack which I just tossed aside and I sat down. I started flipping through the pages, trying to find something about Woreus in the book and I could tell that Reilly stopped her exercise because I couldn't hear her heavy breaths anymore. Instead she walked up to me and hovered above my shoulder, asking what I was doing while taking big gulps of water from her bottle and dyring her sweaty forehead with a small white towel I only replied to her that I am going to do some research and read this book to which she replied is a boring way of spending a free time and she walked away to continue her work out. I was turning the pages, tracking the words with my finger and speed reading it until I found it. The Ulferonn family tree with its' members, at least those you could still read because the ink was getting washed out. And there he was, first son of Ulferonn. I didn't pay any attention to the other members on the family tree and quickly searched up the book again to see what it says about him.

"Woreus. Who are you?"
