CHAPTER VII. - THE NEW GOOD OR THE NEW EVIL
I took the Ulferonn book with me since I wanted to start working on the homework as soon as possible. I adjust the one-strap from my backpack since my bag was sliding down of my right shoulder and hold the book in the hand on the same side, its' dark brown leather feeling cold under my fingers. Turning around, I walk out of the book section and go to the main open space of the library. It looked busier than usual, even though it was completely quiet. I guess that's figured since it is a library. Students from my year or olders were walking in and out of the sections, sitting down at the table and reading their books, some of them making notes. Most of them didn't pay any attention to me, besides a few of my classmates who noticed me and gave me a weird look, then quickly walked past me. Looking around, I see another woman dressed in grey, similar to that librarian from before. She is sitting inside of a circle desk. Blue flower bouquets in old-looking vases decorated that wooden circle in the middle of the library. Besides one small glass full of pens, there was not much on the table. I lifted up myself to stand on my toes to be able to look over the table from the distance and saw an open ledger on a lower part of the circle desk with an old phone next to it, and then also a computer. A lot of the kids were walking towards her station with books and she talked to them or typed into the computer. I felt a presence getting closer to me. Then the librarian from before suddenly appeared right next to me. I turn to look at her and she only smiles at me and moves her left hand in the air, pointing at the lady in the middle. She must have thought I didn't know how to borrow the book and be able to take it outside the library. I have been here more times than any other of my classmates I would say, but I never took a book with me. My assumptions about the other librarian being responsible for lending books were right so I slightly bowed to the lady as a thanks. Then she chuckles and with her both hands bent at the elbows, lining up with her upper body, she leaves. Watching her walk away, my body froze in the place and only my head turned in her direction, following her steps. There was something different about her from the other librarians but I couldn't figure out what. Still holding the book, I grab it with my other arm, hugging it by my chest, I turn my head once again to see the middle of the library. Slightly picking up my pace, I start to walk to the place where the other librarian was for checking out this book. I pass around those classmates who were in the same section before. They are now sitting at the table and going through the books they picked together. Once I was on the same level as their table, they lifted up their heads a little, slightly turning them to follow my steps and look at me, but once I turned my head to face them and our eyes met, they quickly looked down and started writing something into their notebooks. They placed their hands on the books, tracing the words and then copying the text. I don't know if they are scared or weirded out by me. It was unheard of a magician with two manifestations in this community or it was very rare but surely it's not that strange. We are talking about the world of magic. Or are they just scared because they see me as a threat with all this huge competition between the students? Never mind all that, I don't pay any attention to them, at least that's what I tried to do and then I arrive at the circle desk. I reached across the desk to hand the book to the librarian but she is busy with flying books around. Literally flying them. Using her powers to move books through the air, setting them on the shelves. I watched in awe as those books were making their way through the library and sitting down on empty shelves, at least those I could see from this spot. My hand was starting to get numb since the book was quite heavy so I pull back my arm and put it down on the desk and wait. The librarian was still looking down into the ledger and writing with one hand while waving with the other hand, making the books fly from the pile that was on the trolley parked right next to her. Clearing my throat, I try to gain her attention, but she only drops the pen on the open book in front of her, lifts her hand in front of me, showing me her index finger and signaling me to wait. She grabs the pen again and continued to write down something into the book. I tried to peak over the desk to see what she was doing but my bag started to slip again. I dropped down flat on my feet with my heels hitting the ground. I adjusted my bag again, watching her stern face while she sorts the books. Then suddenly she stops her waving hand movements, looks up and smiles at me.
Librarian: What can I do for you, student?
I slightly push the book that's lying on the desk in front of her. She takes it and turns around in her chair, pushing off the table with her hands, making her slide back a little. She was checking and opening it on the back page, then typing on the keyboard the numbers from the book. I wondered why they needed a computer in a magical library but let it pass. I was waiting until she signed me in, tapping my fingers on the desk a little bit impatiently. She asked for my name so I gave it to her. Then she closes the book and reads the title as she was handing it over to me. She was going to let it go when I grabbed it but then for some reason it caught her attention.
Librarian: Are you sure you want that book?
Me: Yes. I didn't find anything else and this one seemed interesting for the class.
Librarian: Oh. Which class?
Me: Scriptology.
Librarian: You picked up a tough one, but with some of the things you learned in this class, you should be able to do it. Also, I recommend using Professor Coldos's dictionary.
Me: Thank you. But it doesn't seem that hard. Even though we just started.
Librarian: Started? What year are you, student?
Me: First year.
She looked at me with her mouth open, shocked. But she cleared her throat and handed over the book, then went straight back to work, sorting the books other students returned while I was there and they filled her little trolley again. I didn't understand what was she so shocked about. It was just an old book with a strange name. I thanked her and left the library, going straight to my room. I wanted to write at least something down for this class. I quickly ran up the stairs to my dorm and then zig-zagged my way through the students who were in the common room to get inside my room. The living room was empty but I could hear a loud chatter coming from the other room. It sounded like all of the girls were in there so I entered mine, which as I suspected, was completely quiet. The little chandelier slowly turned on as I entered and illuminated the room which was getting a little bit darker as the sun was setting down. I dropped my bag next to my desk and then sat down, putting the book on the table and opening it. I rested my head on my left arm as I was reading through a few of the pages. I browse through the book filled with text and a bunch of drawings that seemed like a summoning circle of some sort. It was similar to those you can see in witch movies or those about Satan. It would be hilarious if a demon or something could be summoned through this. Now I know magic exists, it could be possible. Maybe I could summon a demon or Satan and ask them if they are my parents since they called me a demon child since I was a kid. That would save me some troubles while trying to figure out where my powers came from and how to control them. Even though I doubt they would keep books like this in the library, open for students to just take. I chuckle and then I rummage through the things in my desk drawer, trying to find my notebook and a solid working pen. Unable to find it, I leaned down to search for it in my bag. I definitely remember having it with me today. As I go through my bag, I can hear someone walk up to me. Finally getting my notebook from the bag, I sit up straight again and look at the person who came. It was Solya.
Solya: What are you doing?
Me: Just homework from Scriptology.
Solya: Hmm. That first one where you have to find a book and translate a part from it?
Me: Yeah. I picked this one. It has a weird name but for some reason, it seemed more interesting than those others in that section.
Solya: Let me see, let me see.
Solya picks up the book and looks at the cover, then flashes through pages. Slowing down her pace, she reads a few of the pages, or at least tries to read it because she looked somewhat confused while her eyes were trailing the words. She closes the book and then looks at me, furrowing her eyebrows she hands me back the book. I placed it down on my desk and opened it on a random page, flipping the pages slowly to find some longer text I could work on.
Solya: Are you sure you want this one? This is advanced stuff even for older students.
Me: Really? It doesn't seem so bad, just full of strange stories and random words written around the margins.
Solya: But are you really up to the task? You know, even if you use the dictionary written by Professor Coldos, you might not have a solid full text. And he is the best in this area. Ancient texts are hard to decipher, not to mention translate something from the Noion language.
Me: Noion? What's that? What are you talking about, you can just read it.
Solya: Read it? You mean the words. These words?
Solya takes a few steps to stand right next to me and points at the book. I looked at it and only shrugged my shoulders not understanding her worry about me being able to do the homework. She takes to book one more time from the table and looks at the pages, than at me with a confusion on her face. Solya then turns around the book for it to face me, her left hand holding the book in the middle, and her right fingers pointing at the words on the page. I lean my upper body and get my face closer to see better at the fading text in the book and I read that sentence she is showing me, leaning back after I finished. Tilting my head to the right, I wondered what's so strange about it.
Me: It just says The Ulferonn lineage and a bunch of weird names under it.
Solya turns around the book and stares at it. Then she looks up to me and back to the book multiple times. Raising her left eyebrow she returns the book to me and then tells me more about the language this book is supposed to be written in.
Solya: You already translated this part. Wow, you must be a genius. Even though Professor Coldos is a Demier and doesn't like us, magicians, he would love to work with you on the ancient languages though.
Me: Thanks I guess, it's not much of a genius just to be able to read though.
Solya: I guess so.
I rested my forearm on the closed Ulferonn book that way laying on my desk while I talked with Solya. Soon after she excused herself and left me to work while she returned to the other room and hang out with the rest of the girls. I watched her wave at me and wish me good luck as she closed the door behind her and then I turned around to start working. I exhaled and prepared everything for me to do the homework. I pulled my Scriptology notebook from the top of the desk and then grabbed a pen. I wrote down the name of the book and then let everything just rest in front of me while I took the book. I leaned back in the chair and slouched a little bit while I browsed through it again, trying to find which part I should include in my homework. Then I decided to translate that family tree I saw when Solya was showing me the book. I go through the pages, flypping them carefully because the paper was fragile and tried to find the family tree. When I found it, I adjusted my position to sit properly and then started working on translating the pages. I wrote down the names and then did a lazy sketch of the tree, connecting each name in the same was it is in the book. The notebook was small so I couldn't fit everything on one page. I drew a little stars and objects next to each name that had a description and then noted it on the next pages. I was about to be finished when I started to feel tired. I yawn and lean back in the seat. Lifting my both arms into the air above me, I stretch out and then continue to finish my homework. I took a few more notes about the Ulferonn family members but my hand was hurting from writing a lot so I dropped my pen and picked the book to read something more from the book. My eyes started to feel heavy pretty soon which was a sign for me to go to bed. I tidied my desk, put the notebook on the Ulferonn book and packed them together in my backpack. I scavenged my drawer for more pens to bring with me to the class. I took of my cloak and then just tossed it over the chair so that I don't forget it tomorrow. Finished packing everything up, I quickly swap into my sleeping clothes, do a fast wash of my face and teeth, then go to bed. As I lay down, I tap on the side of my bed and the light coming from the chandelier dims a little bit. There were no light switches in the room and it all operated on a presence which girl explainted to me when I was trying to find how to turn off the lights one time. Basically the chandelier is enchanted to know based on the intensity of light in the room and if someone is in there when to turn on and off. But we can control it in a way when we go to bed. One tap on the wood dims the light, two taps turn it off completely. I didn't want the light to blast up when Solya and Skylar get back after they finish talking to the girls so I let it on and tried to fall asleep.
The next morning, I wake up and stretch in the bed under my soft light blue blanket. A little bit tired from last night, since worked on the book for quite some time and I couldn't fall asleep with the light on. I decided to stay up bit more and read more of the Ulferonn book. At the end, I waited for the girls to get back into our room, which was pretty late and we ended up sleeping at dawn.
I got ready and lazily left my dorm. Walking through the school like a zombie, yawning, drained from the energy I go to the cafeteria first. Buying two chocolate filled croissants for breakfast and green tea to give me energy, I sit down and eat. There wasn't that many students around and most of those who came in just bought their morning coffee and left. The brown and sand colored walls were illuminated by the waking sun, rays dropping also on me and warming up my skin. After being done and cleaning up my tray, I was still tired so I grabbed a can of energy drink from the machine and chug it down. I go from class to class, barely keeping my eyes open and listening what was going on in each class. I didn't write down any notes and only stared into my Scriptology notebook to go through what I have written down from the book. It was time for Scriptology class now so I made my way to the classroom and sat down. A few of my classmates were already here, either chatting or reading each other's essays. One of them saw me come and sit down. She covered her mouth with her hand and leaned to the other student, whispering something. It was that girl from the library that looked so weirded out at me. After she was done talking, the other girl gasped and turned around. She stared at me for a while and then started to whisper back. The started to laugh about something. I rolled my eyes and then put my arms on the desk, laying my head on them and closing my eyes, trying to get some extra minutes of sleep. I could still hear them laugh, talk about some book and flunking Scriptology but I was too tired to focus and listen in onto the conversation. Soon after the class got full with students, Professor Minertha came too, greeting us. I sighed and then straightened up to pay attention to the lesson or at least tried to. I supported my head with my left arm and listened to professor call us one by one, to stand up and present our homework if we managed to do something. Luckily, she decided to pick out students in order we were sitting in. I usually sat at the back of the classroom which meant I was going to go as one of the last students. I slouched my body a little bit, hiding behind the male student who was sitting in front of me. Fortunately, he was tall and his back was broad so I could easily hide myself behind him. After I was sure the professor won't see me from her spot, I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep. The time went fast and the class was already over. The bell sounded soft as usual. It didn't wake me up but the noise of rustling clothes and people chattering louder did. I quickly sprung on my spot and tried to focus on what's happening around. Everyone was packing up their stuff and Professor Minertha was telling us about the rest of the presentations will be held at the next class. Apparently only about half of the class was able to present their homeworks. It pissed me off for a little bit because I was up almost the whole night for it and in the end, I didn't even have a chance to present it. But on the other hand, I exhaled that I had more time to prepare my speech for it. I really hated doing public stuff.
The remaining presentation went slow. It was mostly kids from the magical families and of course they studied a different language or two since they were kids, so they did a lot for the homework, trying to gain as many points as possible. Especially Ledon and Mairi who were hungry for attention and showed off their powers or knowledge anytime they had a chance to let us "see and know" how much of a difference there is between us and them. Two of the classes were taken just by them talking about their work and explaining every detail of that language. At least, Mairi's work was interesting. She came from Egypt and her family was famous for serving pharaoh's in the past, passing down old language and how to read hieroglyphs. I didn't like her very much but I listened to her explanation about some secret ritual that preserved the soul of a person inside objects. Mostly they did it as a curse to someone who sinned against the royalty or something. Based on that, my work was just some boring family tree of an old magical people that could be all forgotten for all I know. A few days later, only like five people were left to do their presentation. I was one of them. Quietly sitting in the class, I listened to them. And when the last one ended, I took a deep breath, slapping myself mentally to get ready. Standing up, I take the papers from my desk and walk up to the front of the class. Professor Minertha leaning against her desk with arms crossed. Her expression wasn't a bad one, but it wasn't a happy one either. I guess like any other teacher at school. I walked to the board on the left side of the classroom and waited until the student before me cleans up her presentation. She saw me standing behind her so swiftly she grabbed everything into her arms and then while hugging the papers, books and everything she brought to the class. I unrolled the paper and then pinned it to the board, revealing the drawn Ulferonn family tree. I took a step back and then moved to the side to reveal the poster. I stood next to the board and turned around to face the class so that I can present my work. I looked at the professor to let her know I am ready and then she iniated my presentation.
Professor Minertha: You are the last one, Kaitlin. Please show us which book you chose and then present your work.
Me: When I went to the library, there seemed to be many interesting books but for my homework, I picked this one called Ulferonn.
Professor Minertha: That one surely is an interesting one. And also a hard one but let's see what did you manage to transcribe from it.
Me: From the book, this part intrigued me the most. It seems to be a family tree. The title of it is The Ulferonn lineage. It has many names written on it, also short memos about each member. I was only able to write these few ones since most of them were faded away and I couldn't read it properly. Also, it seems that the lineage isn't complete and they stopped writing it down after few generations. The first descendants of Ulferonn are Woreus, Kalai and Thaenviel. From the eldest son to the youngest which I read in the text about them. Woreus line seems to be the biggest one, meanwhile, Kalai doesn't seem to have any partners or children.
I was presenting my homework and pointing to the family tree poster I made. Since I had more time and the girls told me to perk it up to get more points, I decided to work on it some more. I only had doodles and just notes in my notebook which wasn't much. And seeing how some of my classmates brought a lot of stuff to explain during their presentations, mine definitely needed a boost. The girls showed me a small hidded shop at the school that was selling office supplies. I browsed through the different papers and cardboards until I found an old looking coffee stained paper which was in a good condition despite it looking like a hundred years old papyrus. It would fit the vibe of the family tree so I took it with some rulers, stickers and usual stuff to do some arts and crafts for the project. I drew a big tree in the middle of the paper and then slowly added stickers with the names I could find in the book. I was pointing at one of the names while I was explaining but then I was suddenly interrupted by one of my classmates.
Ledon: Tsk. It's easy if you cheat.
Me: I am sorry?
Ledon: You heard me.
Me: What do you mean by that?
Ledon: Exactly what I said. You cheated. There is no way you translated all that. Admit it!
I stood there, gripping my notes in my hands, starting to get annoyed at my classmates when they started to talk about me cheating. I scoff and drop my hands down, leaving them to hang next to my body while holding onto the crumpled notes. I looked at Professor Minertha and waited for her to say something to them. She noticed me and probably also saw my glossy eyes or those small tears that were forming slowly, that's why she tried to get the situation under control.
Professor Minertha: Now, now. Quiet. I am sure there is some explanation for this situation. Let Kaitlin tell us.
Me: I have nothing to say. I did my homework by myself, like anybody else.
Professor Minertha: I know that you live with older students in your dorms. Did any of them help you? It is not a shame to admit it.
Me: No. I mean. One of my roommates held the book in her hands while showing me the pages with the family tree, so that is how I found about it, but that's all.
Mairi: Sure. Like we would believe that. You would do anything to stand out. Even your second manifestation. You cheated on that too somehow. Trying to show off.
Professor Minertha: Quiet now, Mairi! Kaitlin, did you or did you not cheat, get help, or copied the homework you just presented?
Me: I did not.
Professor Minertha: Okay. Just sit for now then.
Ledon: *scoffs* Really! Now we let cheaters go without punishment?!
Me: I DIDN'T CHEAT YOU STUPID ASS!
The annoyance turned into anger and it kept building up inside me. I feel the power surge through me and blue electricity starts cracking up around my fingers. Everyone gasps and pushes themselves back in their seats. My focus was on Ledon who tried to frame me with cheating. I never cheated at school my whole life and even if I was bad at magic, I wouldn't do it even here. The electricity made its' way higher up to my elbows, and I could feel it flowing inside me. Then I feel a hand on my left shoulder. I look to the side and see Professor Minertha holding me. She gently brushed her hand and the patted me a few times with a soft smile and a nod telling me that she will handle this situation. I calm down and look at the ground, watching the zapping get weaker and pulled inside me.
Professor Minertha: Let's all calm down now. I know Ledon that you come from a prestigious magician family and this might seem strange to you, but there is no proof that Kaitlin cheated.
Ledon: Sure, Professor. But still, even my family cannot read in Noion, so how come a low mundrel can suddenly do it?
Professor Minertha: Please. I will not tolerate those words in my class. We will get to the bottom of this don't worry. For now Kaitlin, you will not receive any points for your homework, until this situation is cleared up. I hope you understand. We have still some time left so we will continue the class, shall we?
I only nod and tear the poster from the board, then roll it up while going to my seat. I shoved the family tree and book with my notes into my bag and pick it up from the ground. Putting it over my shoulder, I leave my spot and start walking out of the classroom.
Professor Minertha: Ehm, Kaitlin, the class?
I don't stop, I don't even look around and just leave the classroom. Couldn't care less about it. If they don't believe me, I don't have to be there. I decided to skip the rest of the day and just return to my room. I toss my bag with a force on the ground and then just jump on the bed, facing the ceiling I stare at it for a while. Covering my eyes with my right arm, I sighed and then started to drift away to sleep. After a few minutes, I hear someone come into the room. They were pacing from one side to the other and then started to whisper between themselves. It annoyed me so I groaned and sat up. Bending my legs on the bed, I rest my arms on my knees and I look at them. It was Solya and Skylar. I barked what at them, annoyed. They looked at each other before proceeding to walk up to me and sit on their knees on the ground in front of me. They heard what happened in the Scriptology class and asked me if I was okay. I looked between my legs, staying quiet the whole time.
Skylar: You don't have to talk about it. We just wanted to make sure you are okay.
Me: News travels really fast at this school I see. There is nothing much really. Only that for some reason my life is still miserable and everybody hates me.
Solya: That is not true. You have us!
Me: I know. I am sorry girls. It just pissed me off.
Skylar: I am sorry to ask you this, but did you really do it by yourself?
Solya: YES SHE DID! Somehow. I don't know how. But. She did!
Me: Is it that hard to translate it? I mean, I have no problem reading it at all. It's just normal to me.
Skylar: I am sorry, I am not doubting that. I mean, with your powers and all, maybe you have a secret power to translate languages too?
We start to laugh at that and then stay up a little bit longer, talking about stuff. The girls dragged me out into the living room and we talked a little bit there until we were joined by the rest of the members of our dorm room. They heard what happened too and were scared to approach us at first when they got in and saw us sitting on the couches. I could see them looking at each other, trying to find a way how to start the conversation but I told them it's okay and that I have already talked about it with my roommates so I was fine talking about it now. They all exhaled and then just tossed their stuff through the door into their room and quickly ran up to us, sliding on the floor and jumping on the couches or sitting pillows right next to us. I explained to them what happened during the class today and they all tried to hug me but then they turned feral saying that they will do some prank on my classmates as a revenge. I had to calm them down and pull Kisha to sit back down because she was ready to go and fight right now. We talked about the language that is supposed to be one of the oldest ones and that no one really speaks it now. Only few of the professors or students take it up as a main part of their studies because the words are too hard to learn, especially because there is no teacher or a book on translating the whole language. It surprised me so I ran to my room and brought the book with me. I showed it to girls and asked them to read it but apparently they can't. I turned it towards me while I stared at the words and slowly sat down, bending my leg and sitting on it. There was some confusion about it and we tried to figure it out. Crimen got up and left the group to only return with a torn out notebook pages and a pencil. She sat down on one of the pillows and asked for the Ulferonn book. I handed it over to her and she opened it randomly. She lifted up her legs with the book to cover it and then started writing or doodling on the paper. When she finished whatever she was doing, she passed the paper around and the girls just shrugged their shoulders while looking at it. At the end, the paper arrived to me, so I grabbed it from Kisha and checked what's on it. It was just a bunch of random words so I asked why she wrote them down. The girls looked shocked and then Crimen went back to her doodling on another paper. After she was done, she handed the paper over, this time directly to me. I was just letters, scattered around the page. I was even more confused but the Crimen asked me to come and watch her write. No what she was writing, but trace her pencil movement. I did and she was making some crazy art, waves and circles, tangling them together. I wondered what the picture is going to be but when she stopped her drawing, I could see words written on the paper. I asked what type of spell that was but she explained she wrote in the Noion language. I gave her a simple huh to which all the girls said that's what they see. I found out the problem behind all this cheating accusations and realized why everyone was in such a shock when I presented my wor or the librarian when I picked out the book. Was this another mysterious part of my powers? I couldn't be a language genius since I barely passed Spanish class at my old school. I groaned because there was yet another thing about me that I didn't know what to do with, another piece of puzzle. And I also groaned because I went straight to my room after I decided to skip my classes and didn't eat anything, which I was starting to regret now as my stomach was grumbling. The girls laughed but then Lucy used her speed to ran into her room and return with a bunch of snacks in her arms. I munched on them, trying to fill my stomach a little bit and then I spread myself on the couch, boasting my bloated stomach and tapping it slightly. When we started to get really sleepy, we cleaned ourselves up, changed into pajamas and just waddled into bed. I couldn't fall asleep at first, meanwhile, girls were like corpses in a few minutes. I was thinking about the book, what it meant and what I was even capable of. And then, even don't know when I drifted away into sleep.
Waking up the next day, I didn't really want to have school now. But the girls persuaded me to go anyway and just ignore people. Throughout most of the day, it was easy to not pay attention to anyone. But it was Scriptology again. I sighed and then went to the class. I took my time getting there so I was the last one to arrive. Almost. I was hiding at the back of the classroom. After the class got started by Professor Minertha greeting us, the door opened once again. I was doodling into my notebook, so I didn't see who came in. I thought it's one of my classmates running late but the professor didn't reprimand them. Only when people gasped and clapped I decided to see for myself who it is. I followed their steps as the person was walking through the classroom. He was dressed nicely and those linen creamy pants combined with sky blue shirt looked expensive. His blonde short hair were cut neatly up to his colar and from the side, I could see that he is young. Maybe in his 30s, judging by the reactions of the girls in the classroom.
Professor Minertha: You might not know this person since he is from the Umbras side of our university. Some of you might know him though but still let me introduce, Professor Coldos. Let's welcome him here.
Everyone claps again. All girls are fawning over him, full of lovey-dovey eyes they stare at him. But his expression stays the same stern one. Until he searches through the class and he sees me. He looks at me and for some reason, I can feel his annoyance piercing through me, the veins on his forehead getting slightly visible. He watches me meanwhile Professor Minertha explains the purpose of his visit.
Professor Minertha: As we witnessed yesterday, there was an issue with one of your homeworks. Kaitlin, please, could you join us here at the front.
I stand up after she calls me and I hesitantly walk up to both of them in front of her desk. Professor Minertha gives me a warm little smile, meanwhile, Professor Coldos remains the same. Like his name, his expression was a cold one. Nevertheless, I stood next to them and face the class. I looked down at my feet and started to feel nervous after the professor started talking to me. My brain started to work on autopilot. Then I looked at Ledon and Mairi, the anger taking over me again and I lied as a reflex but when I realized what I said, it was too late to take it back.
Professor Minertha: Kaitlin, did you bring the book with you?
Me: No, I am sorry. I did not. I lied.
Professor Minertha: That's okay. We brought a similar one just in case. Professor Coldos, it's your turn now.
Professor Coldos: Well, young magician. I heard that for your homework you picked a book written in an ancient language called Noion. You did your homework with no problems and managed to write quite a long text. This is a difficult language and only a few people are able to translate from it. The best in this field is me. I hold the most knowledge about this language even if it's not full. So it seems impossible for a first-year, not to mention a magician, to be able to translate that much. Did you use my dictionary while doing this homework?
Me: No Professor, I did not.
Professor Coldos: Interesting. Then could you please explain how did you do this homework?
Me: I just simply read what was in the book.
Ledon: You mean what was in someone else's work while you copied it.
Ledon said while I was talking with Professor Coldos. I took a deep breath, trying not to get annoyed by him, meanwhile, Professor Coldos continued to talk with me as nothing happened, he didn't even break the eyecontact.
Professor Coldos: May I see your homework?
Me: Sure.
I calmed down and finally could think straight. I walk to my seat but on my way, I trip over something. It almost made me fall but I managed to grab a desk and support myself. I look to see what it was and it was Ledon's leg. I roll my eyes but do nothing to him. I continue to walk to my seat and pick the homework from my bag. Luckily I brought it with me. Well, I didn't even bother to take it out of my bag yesterday so, obviously I had it with me for the class. I took out only the roll with the family tree and tried to push the book deeper into my bag to hide it. Walking back to the front, I sense Ledon putting his leg in front of me again but this time I focus on him, which made him and his desk slide a few centimeters away. He scoffed at me but the teachers were still in the room and he wouldn't risk a fight or losing strikes. And I didn't want more troubles than I already have at my plate. I quickly made my way back to the front of the classroom. Handing over the homework to the Professor Coldos, I wait while he reads it.
Professor Coldos: Interesting. So you are claiming this is purely your work. There seem to be words even I don't know in the Noion language. Do you have something to back up your claim, student?
Me: No. I cannot explain it. I just wrote down what I saw in the book. I can just see the text.
Professor Coldos: You can just... see it?
Me: Yes. I talked about it with my roommates and they explained the language to me. I realized I can just read it with no problems while they don't understand it at all.
Professor Coldos: That is interesting. This seems to be hard to solve.
Ledon: Not really. It means she cheated!
Professor Coldos: Please, if you could restrain yourself from barging into this investigation. Speak only when asked to, student. Now. There is one last way how to resolve this based on what you just said. Could you please translate this text right here and now?
Professor Coldos looks over the book they brought that was lying open on the table. He picked up a notebook and a pen, writing something down. Then he hands me over the book and shows me a passage for me to read. I take the book and look at it. He crosses his arms in front of his chest and signals me with his hand to start. Professor Coldos was focus on the notes he made but still listened to me as read the part.
Me: ...and then the Viysus was created, which led to a new opportunity for life. This world was too small for the giants living among petite creatures. They shall leave to Viysus and make it their own.
I finish the line and look over to Professor Coldos and Professor Minertha, ready to give them back the book. They both look at me with widely opened eyes. Frozen for a minute, they stare at me while I hold the book in front of them. Finally, Professor Minertha takes it back and puts it on the table. Then both of them go into the corner of the classroom, near the baroque-looking window, discussing something. Professor Coldos was explaning something and our Scriptology teacher only nodded. They must have agreed on the result because they returned to their previous spot and Professor Minertha dismissed the class.
Professor Minertha: Professor Coldos accepts your homework as your own. You will receive fifty points for it, Kaitlin. Now the class is over, you can leave.
The students started to scoff and murmur between themselves while leaving the class. I stayed standing next to Professor Minertha and watched everyone leave the room. Even Professor Coldos was walking away from us. After everyone was out, me, Professor Minertha and Professor Coldos remained the last ones in the classroom. Professor Coldos was leaving but he stopped himself in the doorway, turning his head to the right slightly, but still facing us with his back.
Professor Coldos: The Umbras council has heard about you. It seems your powers are even greater than we thought. Something new is definitely coming to us. If it's good or bad, we will see, miss Holland.
