Soon after Elsie is healed, Hazel decides to go to the Isle to save Charity from Sierra's dark magic. Mal accompanies Hazel to protect her, but she finds out the truth of Hazel's dark past and why she still felt the need to help those around her. Once it's revealed that Uma is Hazel's mother, Mal steals the famous seashell necklace as it's Hazel's birthright. On the trip back to Auradon, Mal asks Hazel why she'd never mentioned her mother at all. Hazel admits it was because her mother was a horrible woman who didn't deserve that title.

Mal comforts Hazel, giving the seventeen-year-old the motherly presence she desperately needed.
