Chapter 3
Chanyeol hopped into the car, he immediately looked down at his phone. He repeated the numbers glowing from the screen, right under the name Baekhyun. He shook his head as he tossed his phone onto the passenger seat and started the car. He gripped the wheel, knuckles turning white, jaw clenched. "Fuck!" Chanyeol shouted, throwing his head forward. He grabbed his phone again and made a call.
"Hello?" the receiver greeted.
"I slept with a man," Chanyeol responded, laughing off his anger. "Twice!"
"What? What do you mean?" Kyungsoo's words sounded like they were glued together.
"Nothing important right now," Chanyeol said, "I'll tell you later. But right now I have a question for you."
"What the fuck do you mean later?! Chanyeol, details now!" Kyungsoo shouted. Chanyeol laughed at this, but promised he would tell him everything later after the question. Kyungsoo was silent for a moment. Chanyeol imagined he was annoyed yet intrigued. The latter sighed as he asked, "Yeah? What is it?
"Why'd you bring me?" Chanyeol asked in a innocent tone, staring out the window towards the hotel.
Kyungsoo muttered. "Chanyeol? What? I-"
"To the fucking bar. Why?" His voice became more vicious, yet Chanyeol didn't intend for it to come out like that, but in the end he couldn't control himself.
Kyungsoo wasn't understanding the situation. "Are you ok? You dissapeared on me yesterday. Where are you?" Chanyeol could hear the actual worry in Kyungsoo's voice.
Chanyeol let out another laugh, then sighed. "Oh, I'm fine," he said, shaking his head. He nudged his shoulder as he added, "I'm fucking fine. What I want to know is why you brought me to the bar."
"Chanyeol, I- I shouldn't have brought you," Kyungsoo answered, avoiding the actual question.
"Why'd you bring me?" Chanyeol repeated, catching on to Kyungsoo's trick.
"I just wanted you to have fun," Kyungsoo murmured, not confident with his answer.
Chanyeol squeezed his eyes, massaging his forehead. "What?"
He could hear Kyungsoo gulp down his regret. "I said I just wanted you to have fun."
Chanyeol scoffed, "No, Kyungsoo! Don't bullshit me! Fun is watching a movie! Fun is playing video games. Why'd you bring me to that damn bar! You know alcohol makes me fucking idiotic!"
Kyungsoo felt his eyes sting. "Shut up, Chanyeol," he said calmly. "Just calm down." Those words are always fuel to the fire.
The latter didn't do as told. "No, Kyungsoo, I need to know!"
"You're hungover, get some rest," the younger replied, trying to act like he didn't know what his tall friend was talking about.
"No!" Chanyeol shouted, "It's the fucking middle of the fucking afternoon, ok! I'm fine! Just... tell me."
Kyungsoo felt a pang of guilt while he heard his friend desperately ask for a reason. He was making him react like this, he was making his friend suffer. He didn't want to do that.
"I just want you to get over her," he said. "It's been two months, Chanyeol. Forget about her."
Chanyeol ran his fingers through his hair, his knee starting to bounce. "I never asked you to do that," he responded. "I didn't ask you to do anything!"
"I know, I just..." Kyungsoo thought about what to say. He wanted to tell him he wanted to help him, but Chanyeol would say he didn't need him. He wanted to tell him that he didn't want to see him sad anymore, but Chanyeol would snap back about how his plan obviously didn't work. He just wanted to let Chanyeol know he wanted to be a good friend. He just wanted to make him happy. "I just made a mistake. I'm sorry. I'm so stupid," Kyungsoo spat out the last word, angry at himself for being so careless. He only made things worse.
Of course it was normal for Chanyeol to not want to be with other people. He had figured it was time to meet other people, but Chanyeol was simply not ready yet. He should have known better, he shouldn't have pressured him. He felt even more guilty.
Kyungsoo knew how much he loved Jirim. Why'd they break up? He never knew the reason behind their breakup. Chanyeol would give the easy A reply, "Stuff just didn't work out." He had been waiting for Chanyeol to be ready, but he was too worried about his friend's mental health to keep on waiting.
Kyungsoo pondered a few seconds whether to ask Chanyeol the question he had been meaning to ask for a while now. Others might have interpreted the tall man's muffled whimpers as a sign to let the subject rest for a little longer, but Kyungsoo knew it was time. "What really happened with you and Jirim?"
Chanyeol felt a ball in his throat. He wanted to scream at his friend, yell at him that it wasn't his business, but just like with Baekhyun he hold back. Yelling was what pushed him into his prison. Kyungoo had been there for him since the beginning, he owed him the truth. "She-" His eyes became more watery. "She cheated on me." He felt his stomach squeeze and hold as his voice cracked. He felt the exact same way when he had found out. Embarrased, betrayed, alone, all for different reasons yet the same result.
"I'm sorry," Kyungsoo whispered into the phone, not being able to believe what he just heard. Jirim would never- but she did. He couldn't see Chanyeol's face, but he didn't need to in order to tell how much pain he must be going to. His silent cries for help resonated through his ears. He regreted making his friend talk about it.
Chanyeol sat in his car, letting his cheeks flood with tears. He let them keep coming, for pain would have consumed his entire body if he resisted. He sniffed his nose as Kyungsoo called out his name from the phone, "Chanyeol?"
"I hit her," Chanyeol whispered, squeezing his eyes shut, for if there was not any pain left in his body, he wouldn't be alive. He physically felt grief and remorse in his stomach.
Kyungsoo was silent. He had strained his ears to comprehend what his friend had said; if he could even call him a friend now. Chanyeol elaborated some more. "I was... angry, Kyungsoo. I hated her so much. It's no excuse... But I- I hated her." He broke down again. "I miss her now. So much. God, what's wrong with me? Something's fucking wrong with me."
Kyungsoo thought of something to say. He felt disgusted by him, but in the end he was still his friend, and to leave a good friend behind is one's regret. He ultimately felt sorry for him. "I- I didn't know," he mumbled, finally grasping why Chanyeol was upset of his one night stand with Baekhyun. He still loved Jirim; Chanyeol probably felt even guiltier. In the end, Kyungsoo wished Chanyeol could understand he couldn't win Jirim's heart back. He hit her. He had to move on. Their story is over.
